Only got one wrong. I totally get this point, but Iphones still have a certain sharpness to their image that is unappealing to me. Though you can always tune the sharpness down in post. The other easy tell is the skintones in the Arri are far superior to the iphone.

I really struggled, because of quick transitions, but it really struck me that the close ups were sharp and great colours and I didn't feel there was significant differences in most of the shots - I'm impressed, but I also suspect the ARRI is much more flexible for different lighting conditions.

the two tells are the sharpening and the color cast. Phones usually try and be tack sharp and with cinema cameras there's a softness and warmth to it.

That's a problem of digital photography, even cinema cameras. That is why film is better and is preferred by good directors, as long as the studio is willing to afford the costs.

It isn't the quality or price. Even if the Arri rig was $1500, I wouldn't buy it because I would never carry it around. The iPhone isn't just good enough it is good. I am not filming at the level expected in feature films, but I have more than 1100 videos posted on YT and the iPhone is all around the best for my needs as a creator. Good video, I enjoyed it.😎🤙

I use iPhones and Sony Cine line cameras regularly, so for me the iPhone stood out pretty well for me in each clip. As others have commented, over-sharpened images, stabilization/color differences, etc, are a dead giveaway for someone with a trained eye; that being said, if you didn't know what you were looking for you'd probably miss it unless you really took the time with comparisons. I will admit to having done pick-up shots and emergency shots with an iPhone 14 Pro, and nobody (paying clients and youtube subscribers alike) has ever mentioned to me any noticeable difference (I do shoot in prores with an ND filter and use Protake/FilmicPro, for full disclosure). It is indeed pretty rad that we're at a point in time where you really don't need anything but the phone in your pocket and a little technique and knowledge to make some great work.

I started filming feature movies on iPhone in 2021 dumping the Arri. Simply because my audience could not tell the difference . More importantly, it’s super easy to use . My audience also gets caught up in the story telling and completely forget about “dynamic range “
@MrVh78
@MrVh78 8 месяцев назад
Actually Arri does have kinda computational DR in the sense that it has a separate photosite readout in the sensor for just capturing the highlights info and a separate photosite readout that just capture the mids and shadows which then gets stiched up into a 16 bit file image that's why you get those crazy highlight rolls offs, its called a dual gain architecture something that the Canon C70 has adopted as well.

Please folks - don't forget - these wonderful daylight/lots of sun shots are great on an iPhone, since iPhone 11. And on the 1X lenses, even better. But for events, most of the shots are not on daylight. For sure Matti will do a NIGHT shot comparison between Arri and iPhone 15 Pro Max. I remember when I bought the iPhone 7 to travel to Las Vegas, based on a shot comparison with a Leica shot. On daylight, everything is wonderful.

I cannot express how much value I got out of this video. I was on the fence because I was getting gorgeous footage from my 15 Pro Max and was concerned that due to lack of bokeh you get from pro cameras that my footage wasn't 'professional' enough. But with the Blackmagic Camera App, shooting in log, using tele photo lens attachments and/or getting close enough to my subject to get nice DOF... not to mention getting about 75% of my guesses wrong with respect to Arri vs iPhone despite knowing enough about cinematography... made me feel so relieved that I can continue to work with my current setup until I can afford an upgrade. Thank you so much for this awesome video!

I think the biggest take away is the depth of field and stabilization like you said. I wonder how much more difficult it would be to spot the difference if a comparison between the 2 that removes those variables. Like put those on a tripod, shot side by side, adjust focal length of the arri to match as much as possible the shot from the iphone, etc etc.

It’s crazy, even as a filmmaker it was nearly impossible to tell on the first watch, if you don’t look up closely. As watching it on a smartphone in vertical mode has not much sceeenspace and it’s also a fast editing style. For sure if you want to see it you will find some feature that will tell you which is which especially in challenging shots. But as it’s daytime with good light the iPhone is performing very well. It’s absolutely mind blowing how well they’re matching for a format like RU-vid or social media in general. 🙌🏾 What a fun matchup. Even tho speaking of shooting logistics the iPhone is for sure no competitor for an ARRI. But the specific marked phone cameras are targeting its mind blowing powerful.

Amazing. I think, outside of dof and the softness of the Arri cam, without context, probably almost everyone wouldn't question whether or not it's an iphone film or something else. There are many tools that can be used to make your shots look like that of an expensive dedicated cinema cam. Imagine having pros in their respective fields (DP's, editors, Directors, colorists), with all the right tools, shooting in all the right scenarios, shoot a film without any context. I doubt most people could clearly say that it was shot on an iphone. You may have a few, but the majority of movie watching people, who don't care what you shot it on and only want to see a good film, would absolutely not know. Great shots, by the way. Thanks for the comparison and time.

Just as I’ve bought a dedicated camera. Honestly tho, on RU-vid it’s difficult but the level of detail on even my little dedicated Sony ZV E10 (that I bought on your recommendation and am happy with) is just much more crisp and clear than any phone is going to achieve. Sometimes it takes pixel peeping but still. It’s kinda like using a 60hz phone vs a 120hz phone. Some people can’t even notice a difference but those who do-they REALLY do.
@awesomestuff2496
@awesomestuff2496 8 месяцев назад
Sony ZV 10 destroys iPhone cinematic mode by a mile. iPhones aren't good at reproducing natural Bokeh effect artificially. It's absurd people are recommending a phone to filmmakers instead of dedicated cameras. Even $600 Sony EV 10 destroys iPhones on every category by a mile.
@Shot4ShotPhoto
@Shot4ShotPhoto 8 месяцев назад
@@awesomestuff2496 right? Like yeah the phone is absolutely impressive for what it is but it is absolutely not a substitute for a whole camera. Like I might use the iPhone for a shot in a video where a camera simply couldn’t fit, such as like gliding through ladder rungs or pushing through columns of a handrail bannister, but there’s no way I could recommend to someone who wants a camera to “just use your iPhone”. It simply doesn’t compare.

Put them both in lowlight situations :3 the iphone does well because you're walking in a very color dynamic place. Lots of color & contrast. the arri would flex its muscles in a duller environment & also in a much less lit environment. There are stark differences that i noticed like more color depth and flares tho :D I only got like 2 wrong

Of course, it's still a phone and the small sensor will have a hard time in low light. But however, a lot of the typical "content creation stuff" like YT-Videos, corporate-stuff and even the typical holiday-videos are shot in at least decently lit situations. So it think this phone can be a legit helper for these videos.

I think you nailed it, that isn't isn't comparing bad to good, but anymore it is comparing good to really good. In the whole clips sequence I just kept thinking, no one outside of technical folks would know the difference, especially with such closely matched color. A few gimmies on dynamic range, DOF, and the like. But again, not that the iPhone is bad, it isn't. The Arri is just really that good. Definitely could see an iPhone as an enter camera, frequent b-roll or action type cam. etc.
@Cchogan
@Cchogan 5 месяцев назад
That wasn't silly - that was one of the best objective bits of advice I have heard for years: You have to learn your craft and the iPhone makes that possible. It isn't a competitor to the ultra-high-end beasts, but rather, a really good route to them. You are dead right. And twinned with things like the Blackmagic Camera App (free) and an external SSD, it really does open up so many possibilities for learning the craft.

Hey Matii! -I'm also a almost begginer cinematographer, and i've been experimenting with footage and videos these months. I've learnt a lot of stuff back in, such as, lenses, focal length, bokeh and more stuff. It's been a large journey till this day but i'm still keeping up. I'm not also interested into filmmaking career, i also want to study optics. And that's why i'm really in to this world. And i tell you, i can spot the difference, let me tell you. -I can say (with all my skills that i've learnt for the past months) i can spot the difference. One of the differences that i see is with the color. Arri has lie a more advanced color than the iPhone, but still both of them are good in that. Also because the Arri has more colors going on (16 bit) than the iPhone. -Another difference i can spot is the Bokeh. I know both have already lenses with the same adjustments in them, but i can really see the bokeh on him. Arri's one, is far cleaner and smoother than iPhone one. I can notice this because i'm a iPhone user, and i've been using it's good camera, and i've seen it's Bokeh many times. So yeah. -I might be wrong in this one but, Arri has more quality than the iPhone, but in this situation, you might have set that in to the same quality as the iPhone, but yeah. That's pretty much it. I love your videos man, this is real content for me! Thanks.

Great video and presentation. I think technological advances on mobile devices is at a breakneck speed and the image quality will continue to improve and get ever closer to these bigger cameras. One thing that is still a dead giveaway with iPhone footage is the really annoying lens flare dot. I did not count but I was seeing what I thought was your camera Luts choice on the Arri camera shots. I do not know if you did not edit the same Luts on the iPhone images, but the did appear warmer and with more natural sky colors. I am amazed are how close your brother looks to you. At first I was wonder how did you accomplish such a great split screen with camera movements.

The craziest part is at 5:22 when he was saying "The Arri looks so much better in every single way" in my head I was like "yeah it is obvious"-then I look down and realize my eye was gravitating to the Iphone💀 I think the main thing here is Image quality is more and more accessible. It is comparing apples and oranges where you take a bite of either and it is juicy and delicious. The difference is the usability, the adaptability, and reliability of a professional camera. Also, I am sure if a colorist graded both sets of footage the difference would be massively more obvious than rec 709 luts

haha exactly the same at the 5:22 comparison, I thought Arri is way better here and only then noticed it's actually the iPhone

I really was digging your watch face and can’t identify it. What are you using? It looks clean and simple, I like it!

There’s a couple shots where you revealed that it was Arri footage and I thought it looked worse, so I figured it was the iPhone. Maybe with RU-vid compression, it’s way harder to tell. A big screen would definitely show the difference I think.

This goes to show that color grading plays a big role in the "cinematic" look because some of these color graded iphone footage I've mistaken for ARRI footage.
@maximecaron3133
@maximecaron3133 8 месяцев назад
Right but it’s kind of cheating. Because Arri footage don’t need an insane amount of color grading but I bet the IPhone did.

@maximecaron3133 yeah with the iphone but again, color grading is really important for films.

Well the Blackmagic app with log recording and full manual control will change a lot of the complaints some of you guys have. Not pro, but it is in your pocket and with an external 1-2 TB NVME drive you can steal those B- roll shots that might be difficult to do with the unwanted attention you get with a pro camera.

Im sad to say as a filmmaker that at that speed I can't easily tell them apart. Happy though that I can have something this good in my pocket!

The phone cuts SUPER well. A lot of affordable cameras can produce a good REC709 video look now. I can't tell the difference between a lot of these shots. I wonder how much work would it take to produce a Deakins kind of look with the phone that would hold up on the big screen? If it's even possible at all.

0:44 I believe that is a finger on the upper left of the frame. That gives the clue that it is iPhone. Btw, you can save all your videos directly to external hard drive, nvme gen4 would be a great fit for the ProRes video.

Did you use ProRes Log? Also, did you use any add-ons for iPhone (lenses, etc.)?

It's the sharpening of certain textures like the beard that give it away. In wide shots with a good colour grade I think it's less easy to tell, like you would have to pause and take a look at highlight roll off or something, but when you're in close up you can see how the arri has this slightly dreamier buttery smooth image but still with all the detail, whereas the details in the phone footage look exaggerated. I imagine with a refinement of apple log, and a little bit of techno-wizardry the images could be even closer. Of course the iPhone has huge limitations as a professional tool but the reality is, if you work within those limitations, you can create great looking footage that would not look like it came from a phone. Wonder what the 16pro cameras will be like??

In close up looks nice the iPhone footages but in far angle you can notice the difference of the quality sensor that ARRI is much better, but is unbelievable how the new iPhone can get this quality with a tiny lenses.

yes just look at the totally in focus background, the Lexi won't give you that if it is properly used. BTW the size of the sensor has no impact on the amount of computation required. Same resolution is the same number of pixels no matter the size of the photo buckets on the sensor or the physical sensor size.

I think the big take on this comparison is the difference is not jarring - like you said. It's utterly competent to mix b-roll shots.

now that you said it perfect for beginner..you should compare it to beginner entry level mirrorless camera like Sony A73, Canon r7 and so on, because although its a phone at the same time..its still much more expensive compare to some beginner.. DSLR or Mirrorless.

It obviously a notable difference....but being able to mix without making anyone puke is a huge compliment.
