Yes I am. I'm getting it for the trade in offer but also because I like the idea of being disconnected from my phone when it's closed. Not ending up mindlessly scrolling on Twitter or Tik Tok just because I unlocked my phone and my ADHD takes control.
Had all the Z Flips since they were first released.. swapped now to the Fold 5, had it delivered on Monday in the exclusive Grey colour and I'm absolutely loving it!
After years of being an iPhone user, I've made the switch to the Flip 5 and I couldn't be happier. This is definitely my new go-to device - it's super fun and incredibly practical
I’m also an iPhone switcher: after enjoying my XR for almost 5 years I thought there was little change with the newest iPhones and this new Flip5 caught my attention. Love this phone and love the UI on it!
I'm exactly on the same boat with the XR but I haven't made the switch yet! I played around in a store with the iPhone 15 and it's really not exciting at all. This flip phone seems so much fun.
@@nessness5841 I'd like to see something better in a flagship too. but it's not that bad, truthfully. Though I am not a power user, as the kids say these days.
I loooooove my flip5. If I bought this phone last year, I might’ve had buyers remorse because I was heavily in the Apple ecosystem. However, the only device I was using the most was my iPad. I knew I was getting bored with Apple when I wasn’t even excited to watch any of their events. I have no regrets switching from Apple to samsung.
@@polisherci I made the switch to a Mint Flip 5 after briefly using the iPhone 15. I have been using an iPhone from 2019 till now (XR.13 Mini, 13 Pro Max, iPhone 15.). The transition was actually alot smoother than I thought. The only thing that kept me in the ecosystem was iMessage but then I realized I was using social media apps more often the past year or so. I did not think I would end up switching to a foldable device but here I am. Very satisfied with it.
I’ve been an iPhone user since the 3GS. Been through all the numbers year after year but I’m bored. If you’re a non tech like me, it’s the same design every year just different colours. I’ve upgraded to this today. Can’t wait!
Same… the Flip is the first one that got me excited in a while. However, I’m worried the camera being not as good as the iPhone Pro series will be a downgrade and I will regret it.
Literally same! I only use the phone for alarms, texting, taking photos, music and RU-vid. I’m not into tech so idgaf. I wanna customize and make my phone all cool! Way too difficult wi the iPhone.. soooo! I’m switching to the 6. ❤
I think you nailed it in terms of the hype around this type of device. Phones have evolved from tools that help people do what they enjoy, to actually bring the things we enjoy. So many folks are willing to turn a blind eye to the long list of compromises just to have a “new trick.”
iPhone 13 Pro Max to Flip 5 switcher, I love it! Kinda crazy bc I been waiting for a USB-C iPhone for years and now that one’s about to come out I go to android lmao. Even still, I know the iPhone will be more of less the same. Sorry an action button instead of mute switch , titanium rails, and slightly different shape ain’t gonna change much. I’m just incredibly bored of iphone
I us e a wheelchair so I prefer small phones easier to slide out of my trouser pocket when sitting down. So I bought this phone for one reason only, the size I had a Samsung 8 small one. and last year I changed it to an A73 as these days not much choice in small phones alll large now, but I didn't like the size of it. So last week I bought the Z flip 5 apart from the fact that its much easier to slide the phone in and out I lam very happy I like it very much and the small screen is also very useful. The fold mark on. the inner screen is not at all noticable when looking direct or slightly to one side. It all works very smoothly from scrolling on either one of the bright scrreens to the hinge very well made in my opinion.
Thank you for another honest review. I really enjoy your perspective on the devices you test. I know it is a matter of time before Apple comes out with a foldable of some kind, but personally, I don’t trust the durability. The crease wouldn’t bother me, but I would hate to pay a boatload of money and have the crease become a crack. Thanks again!
@johnboychak5063 you're right about screen durability on the Flip 4 for example, well the factory applied screen protector I mean. Recently had to get my film screen protector replaced, it was free using Samsung repair service as it was within 12 months, but my screen protector started to crack at about 10 months. Although I had to ship it off the Samsung service was really quick. Not sure how much future replacements will cost via Samsung though. So now tempted to go back to iPhone when the 15 comes out (last one I had was iPhone 12 Pro). Then fancied a change and went to S22 ultra but found that too big, so changed to the Flip side but now thinking I prefer reliability and a phone keeping it's re-sell or upgrade value more. I also miss the better camera of the Pro iPhone but perhaps that's an unfair comparison as the Flip 4 or 5 even were never meant to compete with it, as the ultra will probably be the nearest.
This is very tempting! In UK you can get a £500 trade in value for an iPhone 14 pro. That’s mad! This makes the flip very affordable, but yeah, still not willing to get out of the walled garden, it’s too cosy ! 😁
I really want this phone but I've only ever had iPhones. I'm really anxious to leave the apple universe for android. Are there any iPhone to Samsung Z Flip 5 switchers here that would like to give a review of their experience? Was it worth it?
I had a Flip 3, I think it was. The cover screen not near as nice as the current generation. But all in all I prefer my iPhone Pro max. Foldable is interesting but bigger and wider is more useful.
6:30 I can def flick this thing open with 1 hand without worrying about flinging it across the room. When you grow up with flip (dumb) phones, it honestly comes natural
Deep in the Apple ecosystem I bought the Flip 5 after reading about what iphone 15 pro is be like. I think it's time to rip the bandage a little and send my hard earned money elsewhere than Apple for a bit. I don't think I'll miss iPhone itself but just how I can use my Homepod, Apple TV, homekit door lock, facetime my parents. But there're alternatives to all I guess, just a bit less simple.
I love hearing how Innovative 😂 a flip phone (not a new concept) with a included “crease” 😔 out of the box for $1000 plus. I think the day there is no crease and you have a higher quality screen more will get on board.👍 But as always Mark - another banger of a video 🎉🎉🎉
Hi Mark, You said it right at the beginning... Iphones have just been incremental updates over the last few years. I have an iPhone 11 Pro, and it is feeling that it needs to be upgraded. But unless they really do something special with the iphone 15 pro, I can't see me going that way. I have an iPad Pro 11 M2, and a Mac Mini M2 Max, so I am in the ecosystem. However, I can't see me staying within that ecosystem completely. I like the smallness of the Z Flip 5 when folded, and generally everything about it. However, I am an Amateur Photographer, and was hoping the camera on the Flip 5 would have been better. I've been looking at the Sony Xperia PRO-I (and the newly announced, or rumoured PRO-II or PRO-2) with the 1 inch phone sensor, and lots of high resolution Audio codecs (I listen to High Res Audio most of the time). So the Sony is tempting me, but the size and flip-a-bility of the Flip 5 is calling my name. No one has mentioned how audio sounds using wireless headphones/earbuds on the Flip 5 either. It only has A2DP Bluetooth codec, so doesn't scream hires audio to me. Maybe the Flip isn't going to be for me, even though running a music player app on the outside screen just seems so natural. I have no idea how much an Android phone is going to ruin the ecosystem I am currently enjoying, but I don't think Apple is going to be able to excite me with the iPhone 15 Pro somehow, not with the Cameras, and probably not with Audio Codecs either... Nice review, it told me more than most others have so far.
I just pre-ordered my Flip 5 in the green color. Upgrading from the Flip 4. I originally switched from a One Plus 7 Pro to the Flip 4, not sure how i'd like going back to a flip phone, but I absolutely love my Flip 4. I used to have the Motorola Razer back in the day and that phone was amazing for it's time so that nostalgia is part of what made me switch to the Flip 4. The main reason however, I was tired of trying to stuff BIG phones (like the 7Pro) into my pant pocket whenever I went out. Granted the Flip 4 is thicker when folded, but it's still a better option to slip into a pocket and hand carry than a regular phone. No thicker than a set of keys in your pocket. I'll be getting mine Aug 25th and am looking forward to it. I'm going to love that larger outer screen.
I bought my first iPhone last year and I have had my iPad 11 pro 2020 for a couple of years. My first Apple devices. One thing I realised is that I absolutely do not want to be trapped in a specific ecosystem. This is why I only use cross-platform apps. If they don’t have at least an Android version, it’s a no-go for me.. of course the same would apply when I get an Android device (because I’ll returning to Android..). I personally believe that when an app is first a specific ecosystem only, it’s generally not good.
Going back to the flip, had the flip 5g then the 4, the first was OK but the small outer screen was not great, went back to iOS and 13pro from the 4, but that keyboard and lack of customisation is pulling me back to Android, that and well the flip is just so compact and light!
I cannot decide whether to jump ship from Apple (though I already have other Android devices so very familiar with both platforms) - I just worry about the crease on the Flip and Fold. If these were of ‘industrial’ quality and could be guaranteed (as much as anything can be) not to split or crack, I’d buy one of these puppies right away. However, I think I will stick with my iPhone 14PM, Samsung Galaxy S22 and 23 Ultras!
The novelty of the phone as a whole wore off for me. The cover display is not big enough to do anything save for check notifications. However, I have sent text messages from the cover display, but it's still too small, and I end up opening the phone to send a text. I have the Razr 40 Ultra, and although it produces a 3.6 outer display still makes things odd at times because of the camera lenses. I've gone back to my Fold 4 as my main phone, and my iPhone 14 Plus as my secondary phone.
The crease is objectionable and I’d rather see two adjacent screens with zero bezel at the touching pointy. Flip5 seems nice but not enough to pull me away from iPhone… that said, I’d love to see Apple do an expanding screen phone.
One is aesthetics. I think it would look nicer when open to have one material on the entire back instead of having half of it be a screen. The other thing is that I think it would be nice to close it shut when I am done using it and disengage a bit with it.
@@MarkEllisReviews Yeah, I actually commented before you said it in the video. :) But, that aside, this is the first time I'm actually tempted to switch to an Android phone. Also, thanks for a great channel and nice content.
You are right, who cares about the iPhone 15 ? I certainly do not, but I also do not care on yhe gimmick Flip 5 or the folding one. The S 23 is so much more than those 2, and also the tab S9. The Apple phone and tablets are now boring and feature lacking
Love this kind of combo video! I’m definitely more interested in the Flip5 than the Fold, as I miss the small form factor of flip phones. But I’m so entrenched in the Apple ecosystem that I don’t think I’ll try it out unless Apple ever releases a flippable of their own. 🤷♂️
Love your videos mate. Also thank you for saying “Zed” and not “Zee” lol. Great review. The Flip phones are such great devices, beautifully designed and I’m loving the refinements made with the Flip 5. I’m an iPhone user also but I love what Samsung are doing in the foldable space and with their Galaxy S Series.
Hey Mark hope you're well? Great video really enjoyed your review on it so far. I have the flip 4 but the upgrade offers weren't as good here in the UK I don't think compared with the US. I like the refinements with the flatter form factor when closed, and the larger cover screen looks actually useful compared to the Flip 4's. One thing that puts me off staying on the Flip side, is that i recently had to ship off my Flip 4 to Samsung to have the screen protector replaced as it'd cracked where it folds. This was within about 11 months of use and it was covered under warranty as it was free within the first 12 months. The service was quick and very good I must say, but its something to consider i feel longer term that possibly each year you may need to send it off and be without your phone and after 12 months i wonder what the cost would be. You could of course buy a film screen protector and do it yourself perhaps but just wanted to mention my experience on this before people commit to spending their money when times are tough as it is with the cost of living increases.
Yeah, I left Apple last week sold my Apple Watch Ultra gave my iPhone 13 Pro to my wife and pre-ordered the Z flip 5 in the galaxy watch 6 classic I love Apple software, but the hardware is just a brick that doesn’t do anything gets old after a while
Ordered the flip5 last week. Having to wait 3 more weeks since it's so popular! I can't wait to have it. Had the Flip 3 for the last two years and loved it. I'm a big camera user so had some issues with not good quality zoom and photos at night. So i almost wanted to switch to the S23 also because I post often on my instagram about travels. But i just love flip so incredibly much that I'll go for that even if it means having to work a bit harder to get the nice photos for on instagram 😆 flip is the best old new invention for phones.
I started with the Flip 3, now have the Flip4, and when the incentives improve I'll move to the Flip 5. Being an avid motorcyclist the form factor whether in my pocket or tank bag is irreplaceable. I guess I'm a Flipphone lifer.
Great review imo and agree with a lot of comments about some phones being too big, or so advanced its hard to see advantages just another price hike! The foldable really appeals to me but two concerns would be narrow keyboard and durability of screen. I have S/Note8 which lives in a wallet case so love the fold screen protection👍 Great channel🐈👍
I have been a Samsung owner for years. I bought the Flip 4 last year for the smaller carrying size and loved it. Samsung had great trade in benefits, and at the time, we were trading in 3 phones and received good discounts on accessories. We purchased the Flip 4, Samsung S22, and Fold 4, which has been a game changer for a family member who needs the larger screen at times. He is about to order the keyboard to use when traveling, so he doesn't need to always have his laptop. This year, Samsung offered an upgrade to Flip 5 with Trade in of my Flip 4 for $280....totally worth it for the expanded cover screen. The ability to handle messages without opening the phone has been more convenient than I expected. Video chats and watching more content with the phone closed is very easy. The only time I watch content on the main screen is the split screen to have two apps up to or if I just want the larger view. I also like being able to manage emails from the cover screen. Overall, it is a great experience for my needs.
All the talk from everyone about the cover screen, I hardly ever use that flex window. I just use it like a normal phone, unflip it every time I use it. Love this phone Plus I carry around a compact phone all day long and once un flipped, it's as big as a S23 Ultra lol
Great review, lots of good advice here. I am still with my S21 ultra and am finding its successors 22, 23 all a bit predictable and boring, I'm interested in this firstly for the "gimmick"/ 1990s cell phone appearance as well as its smaller size. Main problem is, I'm not one for trading in old phones, I usually hand them down to family members, so I get zero discounts on a brand new phone making it a heck of a lot to shell out. I toyed with getting the 4 as it's slightly cheaper now, but prefer the larger front screen on the 5. Decisions...
We had our prior phones for 4 years and Samsung gave us the best trade-in value last year, so I upgraded to Flip 4 and would not go back to the other styles. I like a smaller phone for carrying. This year, I bought the Flip 5 for $280 with trade-in of my Flip 4. The larger cover screen is worth it.
Really like the idea/look of this phone and tempted to purchase but I live in a work apple ecosystem with watch, Mac and ipad - I just can’t see myself introducing android into this mix - which is a shame. Will we see Apple do a flip phone with similar functionality?
Apple has lost it’s lead in the smartphone world. The iPhones are still cool but Apple is in an internal struggle between the Steve Jobs front that wants to have as little options as possible to keep the interface clean and simple and the progressive developers that want to integrate more features to charm it’s customers like Android does.
If you guys are curious about these phones : I have the fold 4 iPhone 15 pro max and s23 u, the flip 5 is probably the way apple is gonna go. And the future of all phones in my opinion. Think about this. You have a phone that literally folds in half but you can do anything you need on the front . School kids are gonna love that since it’s almost stealth, people at work can literally palm use their phone , and when you realize you can stand the phone and do so many zoom calls now which I have zoom every other month 😂 it’s gonna be crazy .however for me personally I use the fold4 as my daily it’s the best phone ever created . The front screen is a one handed use screen but they need to fix it a little . However, gaming , music , RU-vid , maps , notes , whatever you need to do it’s way better in the fold 4. 120 hz, 10 hour battery, best finger print sensor, customize the phone anyway you need and it’s amazing. The s23 ultra is the best phone ever created . I don’t wanna say much but 11 hour battery best camera best gaming possible best screen , curved display , it’s awesome. And it uses WiFi 6. So yes the s23 is better than iPhone . BUT IPHONE 14 is my daily driver because. I message , find my iPhone , and it’s a solid device because the apps are optimized so great .. if Samsung starts to optimize their apps properly and somehow we get better messages . I don’t think I can go back to apple
Excellent video editing guy. I'm a die hard "traditional" phone user and just bought this device that I'm receiving on Monday. I'm very curious about it and hope it'll stand up to the hype.
@@juliadevia95me too! I use to work for apple, i’ve always owned apple products but they’re so boring, nothing new happens and i’ve really thought about buying the samsung but im nervous lol. it’s the price tbh.
It’s too much hassle for me to migrate off Apple at this point… but kudos to Samsung, this is a great product. Apple is becoming so conservative and dull - people need a variety of options and fun products like this one.
I have an iPhone 13 Pro max (I am an IT guy, don't care about the OS, care about the features only ... and a bit of the look 😉), had Androids and iPhones as well before and bought that Z Flip 5 for ONE reason ... it is SMALL !! and light. I am tired of having bricks in my pockets I don't know where to put when walking or being at friends etc. That phone is fantastic even though it is missing two major things as to be the number one phone on the market : 1) Good cameras ... grrrr ! I am sure they could have done better ... and 2) a better Battery even though it is not as bad as expected ... next generation, if they deliver the two points above, will be killing the smartphone market for sure ...
Made me laugh at "it would fly across the room." 😂😂😂 I made an executive decision to keep my Z Flip 4 instead of trading it for Z Flip 5 only for $40 in the US. That's because after holding both phones side to side I prefer the much sturdier hinge of the Z Flip 4 that holds the Free-Stop at any angle unlike the new hinge that is more flimsy and wobbly (marketing calls this more "smooth"), a more narrow crease of the Z Flip4 compared to the wider one on the new 5, the presence of the gap gives the space to insert the finger to open one-handed easier, and the smaller cover screen with its unique half matte colored design when closed facing up on the table with its full black background of the notifications (like a little old-school pager), plus less distracting and serves as a more effective "barrier" which why I switched from the generic and boring all-black-brick iPhone to the Flip side last year in the first place. But your review of the Flip5 was very entertaining. I agree that those who haven't experienced the modern flip phones will be surprised how awesome and fun these are. I highly recommend trying it as well. Thanks again for the laugh! :)
I get your reasons for not upgrading but there are a number of reasons to upgrade, especially if it's only $40. Besides the obvious one of having a year newer phone so longer before potential issues, there were a number of improvements that most reviewers don't mention. The screen brightness is much better, the usb port is better, the Wi-Fi is faster, the storage is faster, the Bluetooth is better, and of course the processor and gpu is faster. there's also potentially more storage on this year's models.
I've never held or used the Flip 4, but I've had the Flip 5 for about a week now and I am very impressed with the hinge on the Flip 5. Very sturdy and well made. Its been fun having a flip phone again after 10+ years! They've come a long way!
I have the z flip 5, i like so much the level of personalization samsung gives you. Also with good lock that many many maaany times doesnt perform well (cause is not oficial samsung app) and the phone is full of bugs, SO MUCH overheated, the battery simply goes like 4 hours, THE CAMMERA does not take good pictures, the videos are ok they'r great but many times it sticks a lot when playing the videos and obviously when i just share what i can get with that 😖 cammera it just does not seems like a 1000 dollars phone. IT DOES NOT FEEL PREMIUM. the alluminium and crystal feels like plastic
Used for 6 + years an iphone, now got a Flip5 and fey days later now going back to iphone. Flip5 have problems ? No ! It's a bad phone ? Absolutely no ! Why going back ? Sorry to say that but Android feels still cheap and not well maded.
Honestly just switched. Been an iPhone user since the iPhone 4 and have never owned another brand. Yes, it will take some getting use to, but Apple has not really added any value to their flagship in the last several releases, so I just got tired of them. The new Samsung watch is even better than my Apple one as well.
To save money and be reasonable im waiting until my iphone12 that i got about 2/3 years ago goes out completely before i get a flip phone Hopefully by then they improve it even more but even as it stands i want the z flip 5 so badly😭
I switched yesterday from iPhone. I love it, its more premium than apple. I also put all my contact, fotos video and callendar from apple to the samsung
I'm very tech enthusiast, i "was" Apple super fan since iPhone 3G (3gs,4,5,6,7 and now 12) . I got crazy for Z Flip series so crazy that in less than 1 year i had flip3, flip4 and from yesterday flip5. Then most of you just understood why i'm still with iPhone 12. No innovation at all and the most of competitor choice of ..playing with customer offering some teenager features on ios side and just only cpu speed and some megapixel over years , obviously increasing sellign price. That's why i didn't bought 13,14 and for sure i wont' buy 15. The second personal need is the size. For me the maximum allowed size (probably in my strange mind) is the 6.1" of iPhone 12. For me is the "limit" i wont' bring out of the house bigger smartphone. Obviously it's personal but being close to all day long in front of a big 28" screen i don't need so big display size when i'm on the move. It's the opposite: i prefer to go without bags and just have the smaller size i can use even with some limitation. Wow Galaxy Z Flip 5 is even more of my expectations and needs. If even the flip 4 fullfilled my need the 5 is feets over...Now with external display you can do a lot of things (even reply with text) and in the same time opening it you have a 6.7" display that make it kinda "phablet" even for most pretending user. Under the hood the state of the art in terms of processor (Android side). I was skeptical when i bought my first flip3 . I bought just for curiosity and i used it as secondary phone for a couple of months. Since Flip 4 i sincerously can tell to all of you that my iPhone 90% of times remain in the house. There is nothing you cannot do with one ui maybe you can , instead, do much more than with ios. Features, style, portability, performance made it my favourite smarphone at today. So just to say: if flip 3 was still an experiment and i never suggested to swap fro iphone to it, with Flip 5 you will forget about iPhone unless till Apple won't do something really innovative (not in 2023 maybe neither 2024).
I really like the idea of the phone. But i think ill wait for the flip 6 to come out. It would also be great if there was a version for lefties with the buttons on the other side. Thank u for the video✌🏼
Purchased the Flip 5 Z(ed) and I loving it so far and have only begun to understand how to use what ... and when. No regrets so far. Great video, thanks.
From a mechanical perspective it's functioned very well. I have no real issues. (I am hoping that someone will come up with a case that has just enough lip, perfectly located, that I could open it with one hand.) From a using app perspective, all is going well. Some, that are not native, have trouble with the small front screen such as Golf Pad. I quite happy with the transition to this folding phone. @@JuwalPepito
Much easier to open when you have a case. The fear disappears with a case. I don't compare this to the Pro Max series I compare it to the Pro series because it's the same width. I'm coming from a 12pro so from my perspective, this is a iPhone 12/13/14Pro just longer when opened and shorter when closed, perfect actually. Peace enjoy.
For those of us who have only used iPhones for a long time... Bought a Flip 5 for the first time. The current iPhone is too boring and there is no change or innovation... Just upgrade the camera... And too heavy...iPhone Max is not a flip, it weighs similar to a folder...
I hesitated moving over to 5 from 4. How much could they change in a yr, I thot! After I got hands on 5, I immediately told my partner, get F5! It's life changing!! Its almost as sleek as a razor, and better!!!
