You've heard it said before - "The best camera is the one you have with you"... While we don't completely agree with that, there is a lot of truth to it. And now more than ever, almost any camera you can get your hands on will yield great results... So today we take a look at filmmaking with an iPhone.

Film Riot But you have to ask yourself what's more important, whether what you wanted to say or what it looks at first glance (wooww my iPhone is so good people can't tell it from professional camera). I got that but what's bugging me about this video is what it looks like to most people.
@filmriot
@filmriot 7 лет назад
Honestly, If it looks like that to you, that one is on your personal thinking, not much we can do about that. The point of this episode (which was stated multiple times) is that you don't need a pro level camera to do good things. To prove that, I used my personal cell phone to make a sketch... The funniest part about this is that no one was complaining when they thought we used either a $5,000 camera or a $12,000 camera to shoot that sketch last week... This week we show that it was actually just a cell phone (which most people already have one) and complaints come out like crazy. I think more than anything else it just reveals the very toxic thinking some people have. That thinking will only hurt you/them. Take the message of the video (it doesn't matter what you shoot on) and run with it. Go make great content with whatever gear you have and don't let it stop you.

I used an iPhone at my job for about 3 months primarily for interviews of employees to send out to customers. One of those was amazing looking and the rest were pretty good and one just awful. I showed employers the work, and they decided I knew what I was doing and allowed me to buy a mic to start off with. Went with NTG4+ and when the audio amazed them they said I could have a budget of 8k including the mic. GH5, four lenses, set of lights, mavic pro, light/c stands, etc. All because I started with an iPhone. Don't let yourself get in your way of your own success.

Kind of a moot argument when the phone is very expensive, you're using professional lighting, a gimbal, tacking on a bunch of accessories, editing with after effects, etc etc etc. If you want to prove equipment doesn't matter, shoot on a cheap camera, use free software, make use of natural light, etc! Besides, it'll make the footage look more genuine and less over-produced and gimmicky. The real fix for a lack of equipment is good writing/storytelling.

For blocking some of the light falling on your screen you should have used a tea box or any other small box, cut the top and bottom and tape it just to the top part of your phone so that it can flip out for you to use the touchscreen and then flip back on your phone held in place by gravity. Edit: or use back wrap and fashion a hood yourself

I felt it was a bit off, like one of these real hdr-pictures you find online - just way over the top. The lack of depth was one thing but i thought it was from the weird positions and the makeup was amplifying that effect. But now i know. I don't like the idea of filming with a device, that might as well vibrate mid shoot because its not build for getting the shot, but for communicating with others. The lack of depth isn't my biggest complaint with the look and when the camera doesn't move it's ok, but when the camera moves it just looks bad. The wiggling from that small device and the digital stabilizer which only fools you if you aren't really paying attention, keeps me from even thinking about using my phone for anything serious. And putting the camera on an osmo is just cheating, you might as well get a real camera at that price. "The best camera is the one you left at home" is more my way of thinking^^

Great video! I’ve been watching you since I was a sophomore in high school, I’m going to be 27 now! You’ve been an inspiration since I started making videos! What’s crazy is that I have a DSLR with wireless and wired mic’s and everything but for my videos I actually PREFER filming on my phone. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and it makes it so much easier! Especially now since my laptop has been stolen so now I have no way to edit aside from my phone. I purchased InShot (which you can get for free) and I film everything on my phone. I film, Edit, and put it out all on my phone! So easy even for beginners. I hope all is well! Greetings from an American living in Mexico 👋🏼🇺🇸🇲🇽

@LordSauronGamer
@LordSauronGamer 7 лет назад
Cool to see that. But indeed the IPhone is not an example of low budget 'gear' as some people stated in the comments. Also the average camera quality on cheaper is not that impressive. Also because you have to consider the pricing differences between countries. Sometimes your cheap may be very expensive elsewhere or vice versa. Where I live for example the cheaper products do not have a high standard on quality. But anyway, I still can agree with the fact that even lower quality products can make your project come to life. Only problem is that it won't stand out when comparing to other projects in terms of visual and sound quality and it DOES limit the projects you can make (if you plan on shooting in lower light conditions with an ASUS phone, it won't be good.) So in the end, if you can't make the visuals of your project stand out, invest more time on the writing so then people will have a stronger reason to look for it.
@filmriot
@filmriot 7 лет назад
The iPhone is a phone. One that I already have, which is the point that is being made. And any iPhone from the 4 on has solid enough quality. You can get the same if not better from a t2i or t3i, which you can get starting around $200 on eBay. The point of this episode is that you don't need a $5,000+ camera to do good work. And either way, you can get an iPhone 7 on eBay for $500, that is a very low-cost camera for one that shoots 4k.

I don't really read through comments, so I didn't see if anyone said anything; but I truthfully didn't even expect it! Awesome stuff man. Ive used red's and alexa's, all the way down to iPhones. Now, with the super cheap gimbals coming out for smartphones, you can literally intercut iPhone footage with Red footage -- I've done it.

Okay! This video is great and all, but try to do the same without things like a tripod, mic, gimbal, post editor, or special apps. Most of the problems that arise with us cheap but good filmmakers aren’t really about an amazing camera, but things like a good microphone or a tripod or the skills to use a post editor. Just try to do this with only the phone and no added stuff, and it’s clear to see how a raw pro camera and a raw iPhone are so different. An iPhone will take the same video, yes, after hours of after-editing, an amazing mic, an adjustable app, and ideal conditions. The power of a pro camera is that by itself with nothing added, it is better than the iPhone with toiling and money and materials that a lot of people don’t have. It is sometimes better to invest in a good camera that takes awesome videos with not much needed for a mic or post than an iPhone with hundreds of dollars spent on accessories that buff it up to the levels a base camera is.

So I know a video with "the camera doesn't matter" isn't the best place to ask this... but, I've been looking into upgrading my camera. The two I've been looking at are the c100mkii and the Sony a7sii. I'm fourteen and currently shoot on the Panasonic G7, when I bring it a small mirrorless camera on shoots and since I'm fourteen I find peopple often don't take me as serious as when I bring a bigger cam.... is that something I should be thinking about when I buy my next camera? I'm currently leaning towards the c100mkii

Echo Productions - Whoever hires you should have seen your work beforehand, right? And if they hired you, they did it for the quality, bot for your camera. Remind them of that, lol.

as someone that used the gh4 and now uses the gh5, and has used the c100mk2 - I wouldnt use the c100. It has a profile that is on par with the gh5 but lacks features like 4k, 180fps slowmo, and most notably IBIS. as you are probalaby well aware the gh5 will not perform better than either the a7sii or c100 in autofocus but will wipe the floor with almost everything else

Your question can't be answered. First you need to know how/for what you are going to use your camera. You are not stating that. There is no 'best camera'. There is only the right camera for the job. The C100mkii is a great run&gun camera with zero hassle, great colors out of the box and everything just works. With Sony camera's you will get higher framerates and true 4k, but in return you get poor battery life, sucking menu's that you will spend hours of your life in, crappy autofocus because you will probably adapt lenses... etc etc. But if you have the time to set up your shot properly and spend hours on color grading, and don't have to run&gun... then Sony or BlackMagic is great. If you need to run&gun, Canon baby

strange to title "camera does not matter" when you had unpredictable shots out of focus, a camera that would stop in the middle of the shot due to overheating,wobbly nd filter holding with tape or sound failure due to fiddly mic connector. with the pressure and stress we have on a shoot, we really do not need more predicatable problems coming for the gear or adding extra work in post when we always end up being late. for me the conclusion is "gear do matter" but more in the sense of being reliable/easy to work with than purely in term of final image quality.
@amanieux
@amanieux 7 лет назад
it reminds me of the zacuto camera shootout where the dp using the iphone had to do a lot of extra work in lighting setup and postprod to compensate for the image weakness of the iphone. the extra hours of work were not worth the $300 difference between an iphone that cost $0 and a used gh2 that cost $300.

I love how this is supposed to be a "Your Camera Doesn't Matter" video, but he spent more time in post correcting the settings he double checked while filming. This is the reason why I am buying a pro cinema camera, I'm tired of things not being in focus even though I've double checked focus, I'm tired of not having the dynamic range I want, I'm tired of the camera not being intuitive and clunky with settings. I use a Sony a6500 atm and although when it does it's job, it creates spectacular images, I don't have the budget to keep doing reshoots because of the camera having issues.

I do get the point and I don't see why the gimbal or microphone seems like a catch to some people. However you are obviously using a filter, bounces and shields which, while they may not be very pricey, obviously take time to acquire and expertise to set up. Long story short: *One* can create awesome imagery with just a mobile phone. *You* not necessarily. But that should not hinder you from trying :) P.S. You meaning the viewer. (Me inclusive)

I've usually had problems with filmic pro since I first got it years ago. It always had issues like you mentioned. Like audio not working right, exposure changing, sometimes shows it's recording and it just wasn't. It's kinda sad considering it's a paid app but hey if you want a good product use the right tools for the job.

With Blade Runner 2049 coming soon, I hope someday you guys cover how to make a Cyberpunk, retro future, type of film for enthusiastic filmmakers that are into that genre. Would be a challenge for you guys as well I think. Imagine the outcome and how proud you guys would be and how educated we would get into making such a project. That would be amazing!

I made a LAD test with an S8 and an Iphone 7, and while the S8 retained more details in the stills, the Iphone had a stop of dynamic range and the same sharpness as the S8 on video mode, and less compression artifacts that not even Filmic Pro could take away. I love Samsung too, it's my personal phone, but as a VIDEO camera, it's still not good enough.

ok but if your shooting on a iphone you kinda are using an expensive camera. the modern iPhones shoot 4k and have amazjng quality. however the modern iPhones are certainly not cheap. what about someone like me where my phone is a cheaper android and not like an s8 or anything. i can only shoot in like 720 and the frame rate is pretty low so i might be able to get decent quality but i cant throw in to much movement into the mix or then it wont matter that its in hd. i like the topic but the modern iphones really are just basically expensive cameras
@filmriot
@filmriot 7 лет назад
Most modern mobile devices have solid enough quality to get started with. The point here is not to say the iPhone specifically, the point is (as I said in the episode) it doesn't matter if you have a $300 DSLR or a $50,000 camera. We are at a point now that any of these can be used to get a good end result. The only thing that really matters is to cut excuses and work on the content.

We shot our first 30 minute short film with a HP still camera 12 years ago and it's high quality videos looked like something between 144p and 240p does in RU-vid. For the next longer film we bought a slightly more expensive camera. It was the cheapest possible mini-DV camcorder we could find because we didn't have the money to buy better. After couple of shorts we bought Rode Videomic for better audio and made a short film with the local police department to be shown in schools for hundreds of students. That got us some connections and for our next film local community college borrowed us professional gear for free. After that we've been using cheap DSLRs, rental cameras and gear we can get from friends studying in film schools. Just start making videos and short films and build up your skills along with your gear. 480p is just fine to start making content, 720p is even better. Learn with what you got in front of you and when your scripts start getting longer and dreams bigger and you still can't buy expensive cameras or even an iPhone, borrow a friends DSLR or iPhone or get in touch with someone who has a camera and start making stuff with them.

Slow motion and depth of field is very important, of course your camera does matter what a bullshit. You don't need a camera which costs €10000, but you need some sort of step up to higher frame rate and better depth of field etc.

Rein Martens Casey Neistat shot an entire series on mostly DV Camcorders and point and shoot pocket cams. Series got bought by HBO. Why???? Content, Camera placement, story telling. Some shots look like crap but it never mattered. To this day he uses some of the most minimalistic approaches and yields great results. For anybody with any level of gear who is passionate and has ambition look him up and watch how he got picked up by HBO.

Camera does really matter. Whatever creativity you may have if you're phone has a bad camera resolution, you will get a bad product. Imagine watching a video in a low resolution. But it's a good news for people who has an iphone X and 11 because their camera is good.

Finally someone points out the real issues on the "your camera doesn't matter" debate. Of course, your story will make your project great and you shouldn't think, that a better camera will make your films better. BUT if you have the possibility to upgrade your camera to shoot more comfortably do it. But if you feel you need to upgrade your camera to upgrade your filmmaking game, you should first upgrade your filmmakig skills... a camera won't do that for you.
