Thanks for your extremely detailed explanation, it is perfect! What I would suggest is to look at the absolutely interesting device (Xbox one / S / X) in scope of managing wireless hi-fi setup. You are right, all these cables annoying. I found that Xbox can receive music wirelessly (via wifi) from Iphone (Airplay 2) by using application called Airserver. So my home setup is next: iphone (deezer hifi) - Airplay 2 - Xbox One S - spdif - fostex hp-a3 - rca - marantz amplifier... Unfortunately my DAC is not showing me exact frequency and bitrate receiving from xbox after all interactions. Would be great to get your analysis on that. PS: this setup is oriented only to listen red-book quality from deezer hi-fi subscription.

You can also now transfer files directly through the Files app in IOS. And you are not crippled by the Android sample rate limitations. So it's about even now especially most hi end android phones don't have sd card slot anymore.

I believe it's not instant, but Spotify will eventually be put to sleep by iOS and prevent background downloads. If you're playing music in Spotify though, the downloads should continue as the OS will not suspend a running music app.

Wouldn't it then depend on the quality of headphones to resolve the improvement? Further MQA is proprietary (I thought) and then ties you to Tidal. The audio aspect in combination with a phone would cost nearly as much as a high quality fixed audio system. If portable then most hight quality headphones are open back which means a phone wouldn't be powerful enough to lift the Db above background noise. It just seems to me a super expensive way to simply listen outside.

Might be interesting to try the Hidizs S9 or S8. They take a usb-c cable so you can use either usb-c to usb-c or lightning to usb-c. And it removes the most common breaking point on these things from the device, which should extend it's life.

But I have started to resent having my phone plugged into this DAC, but on the other hand, I really love the sound of the DAC. I’ve pulled my hair out over this issue. There I was splurging on a brand new iPhone 12 last year thinking all my high res problems were sorted, and then I a/b tested USB audio player pro from my android vs “native” Qobuz from iPhone. The result to my surprise was that usb audio player pro had much better low end extension, and therefore was a lot more engaging to listen to. Unfortunately I think even iPhone does resampling… or remixing at the very least - how else would I be able to hear notifications interrupting my Qobuz in iOS if that wasn’t the case??? The same problems occur in windows and Mac OS. The only difference there is that the Qobuz app (with the latest update) gives you the option to select “exclusive mode” on the wasapi usb driver. My favourite system is still Audirvāna on mac. That is probably not really true to source with the Audirvana engine but it does what it was designed to do - completely disable the system audio. So there is still no solution for offline Qobuz on the streets… My final solution I’m planning is using the dual sd slots on a chord mojo/poly combo with the poly set to “hotspot mode” and then I have a unmolested upnp server in my pocket. Qobuz let’s you download flac files if you pay extra and that’s what the record companies have forced us to do the bastards. I could go back to usb audio player pro but with the fiddly usb c cables and dongles, I found that any slight movement to the cable or connection, and the usb audio player pro app would crash because it was working hard in “exclusive bit perfect mode” - that’s the other proof that iOS does not allow Qobuz to operate in an “exclusive mode” capacity, or otherwise, my exact same system would crash using my iPhone.

On the iPhone side of things, I am using the DDHiFi dongle which is way smaller than the options you showed in the video and has great sound quality. DDHiFi makes the dongle in lightning and USB type C with 2.5 or 3.5mm connectors. They also recently came out with a 4.4mm dongle that has a secondary 2.5mm jack although, that version is a standard type dongle with a cable extension and is currently only available in USB type C.

There are new really small USBC to lightning adaptors for iPhone which hidizs makes. Only real drawback I see for iPhone now is not having support for LDAC, APTX, APTX HD. which is a real deal breaker if you have a bluetooth dac like the qudelix5k.

I use an Audirect Atom 2 on my iPhone 12 mini. This DAC doesn't even have a dongle cable, it's a direct plug and play into the lightning port with MQA capacities. I use lower impedance SEnnheiser HD599's, but this little thing can easily cope with the 600s and the Beyerdynamic 1990s, the ATH60MX, and the Austrian Audio X55 and X65. Also, it's 80 bucks.

Hi John, Thanks for a great channel and really opening my ears(?) to the hidden audiophile in myself. Recently, Amazon Music Unlimited in the UK added HD as a free inclusive part of the package which got me to dig out my Chord Mojo and attach it to my aging OnePlus 5 and see how things sounded. After some small tinkering, I can now see (some) Ultra HD tracks (Coldplay - Clocks, from A Rush of Blood to the Head) for example reporting as 24 bit and 192 kHz in the Android based app and the Mojo shows a lovely blue 192 kHz from its coloured glass on/off control bead/ball. In this video, around 10:26 there is mention of vanilla android resampling at 48 kHz - and this ties in with what I see with youtube streamed content. I assume though that the Amazon music HD app must be performing some USB bypass magic along the lines of what USB Audio Player Pro does. I'd be interested to know if Amazon Music HD is available in Berlin now and if you'd tried it with something like your LG V40 if you still have it? Keep up the great content. Many thanks

Currently venturing into the world of Hi-res audio with a 3 month free trial of Qobuz and experimenting with my iPhone and PC until I get a portable DAC. Thanks for shedding some light upon the internal workings of the phones, that was very helpful. I have an old iPhone SE with a headphone socket and as I expected the output from that will not be as good as an external dedicated DAC, but it is better than bluetooth AAC to my headphones. Of course the big question is - how will this all change when iPhones start coming out with USB sockets instead of lightning. Hmmm.

Hi John! First off all - thank you for your amazing work you are doing for us! Im Big fan of your videos :) I have one question - i dont have a lot of money for the streamer. For now im playing music audio from Apple TV 3 via AirPlay (optical to external dac) and i want to make a little upgrade. I tried Raspberry Pi with HifiBerry Digi Pro hat. That wasn’t for me - sound was very flat. Much worse than appletv. So im thinking. Maybe i will buy some old iPhone (only for audio) and usb dongle. Then connect it to external dac via usb? And i will make some kind of audio station with all my music - tidal/roon/Spotify hifi in future. It will be better than Sonos connect, chromecast audio etc. In terms of sound quality? Thank you :)

A comment and question regarding Tidal HiRes output on Android phones, in particular, the Pixel 4a. Since this video was posted , Google issued a firmware update for the android Pixel 4a (on March 5, 2021) which no longer allows the use of USB Audio Player Pro on the Pixel 4a device. Hopefully, Google will fix this issue in the not too distant future allowing 4a owners to begin using USB Audio Player Pro once again. My question regards the use of Audio Quest’s DragonFly Black. I currently use the Dragonfly Black with a OTG Dragonfly Tail and even without using USB Audio Player Pro the light on the Dragonfly Black shows magenta, indicating it is play HiRes and MQA! Can this be true and how is this possible? Any answer to this question would be appreciated.

I've run across more than one video on audio from phones where the LG V40 was the go to phone. When people figure out that the LG phones that have the Quad DAC's are probably the best sounding phones when using wired head phones and since they also have the LDAC codex they are great for blue tooth. The Sony WF-1000XM4 ear buds sound surprisingly good as does the 1Mii B06HD+ using LDAC hooked to my home stereo using the same LG V40 as a streamer and with a 256gb micro SD for the Flac music library. As much as people love their apple stuff android phone are much more versatile. Proprietary expensive stuff only hurts apple

My Phone doesnt have a 3.5 jack either (Fold 3). I can order a USB C to 3.5 like you mention, the helm bolt (Or probably will choose the cheaper option) But im not really a fan of using dongles on the go, scared i destroy my port while its in my pocket or anything. But i wouldnt mind it the other way around, a small dongle hanging on my 3.5 jack on the headphone. Is this a thing? And what are the options? So Phone's bluetooth > some dongle giving it to the 3.5 on the headset. Or can i use some 180 degree USB C male to female to route the dongle to the back of the phone? That way with a good fit it wont wiggle at the charging port

Well since this was posted 7 months ago things have changed considerably. My 2 cents: Using an iPhone with a USB adapter that can accept lightening/USB X2 and USB C. Run this into two DACs. Topping e30 and Khadas Tone 2 Pro. Just got a samsung a52s 5G that has the Atmos setting. No dongle nor adapter is necessary. Connect the Sammy directly into either DAC via type C. My iPhone is too old for Atmos.

Hi John, Hope you are doing great. I think this video needs an update. I recently bought a Helm Bolt. The package says "plug n play". I am using Samsung Galaxy S10 and Tidal, and with Helm Bolt I get MQA, indicated by the purple light. I did install the USB Audio Player Pro and then uninstalled it soon after. Still it is working fine with MQA content on Tidal. Has the recent Android update(s) removed the resampling feature? Or is it with few specific Android phones that can do away with USB Audio Player Pro? I haven't got the answer yet. Will look for it. May be this update can be included in your video. Thanks for everything. You are awesome!

Separate dongles and Dragonfly are best for me from the point of durability. 8 euro for new dongle is better than 99 euro for full "stuff" when in case of broken cable.

Almost any modern phone sounds relatively good with a good dongle DAC but Android has better apps for playing and streaming highres music (my favourite app is Usb Audio Player Pro which is full of features: popular streaming services available, Samba support for NAS use, DLNA support, quality EQ... And its stable) I haven't found a good or even working iOS app for streaming highres flacs or dsd music using a smb protocol. No problems with iOS if playing music from iCloud, Tidal, Qobuz but get problematic if use local sources.

Greg, You should seriously consider Poweramp. It's the app I've been using for YEARS. It somehow makes everything sound better than the other competitors do, and doesn't cost much either. It also has EQ'ing options, and a Hi-Res Output option as well for 24-bit music (see Output Settings in Audio section of Settings). It also has a great interface, and lots of cool options too, including being able to save your settings (export/import) to transfer over to future phones. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxmpz.audioplayer&hl=en_US&gl=US You also need the Unlocker app, which you can get here (install it AFTER the one above): play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxmpz.audioplayer.unlock&hl=en_US&gl=US

So basically if you use BT headphones use an LG V Series Android phone for a better HI-FI connection with their built-in connection formats, if you use wired headphones and no DAC for MQA in-between connection points (3.5mm) use the LG if you want better audio and better HI-FI offline use the Apple USB camera dongle and a Dragonfly series USB DAC. I hope my understanding is correct?
@scottmuhlbaier1945

Funny you should mention LG V40. By choice, that was the one I opted for (along with UAPP) because that was the first one with the arguably superior Meridian tuning...but every model after that they started stripping away some of the famed audio options like MQA, DTS, and especially native DSD playback w the Android 10 update! So I found a (carrier) V40 still on Android 9 and set up Package Disabler Pro to prevent its ass from updating to Android 10...and so far so good! Now I'm trying to decide between Qobuz and Tidal (since LG can do MQA) for hi- res service... but I have to say Q has really impressed me with their 24/192 catalog of late. And It sure is nice enough not to wade through a pile of garbage rap acts on the homepage to find quality music!

Hi Mr. Darko! I bought an external DAC (Hidizs S9pro) together with the Hidizs LT03, an OTG. It does not work properly: I have no hires audio. I guess, it is because I do not use the lightnig to camera adpater. Am I right? Do you really need to buy the (sort of expensive) lightnig to camera adapter, if you want to enjoy the best possible quality on iphone? (I have the old Xs by the way). Thanks for your help,Stephan

Hi. I want to know if listening over the sony XM3 with LDAC enabled sounds significantly worst than when using the Helm bolt. I have the XM4 and to me they sound fantastic when paired with LDAC, but I have never tried an actual dac, so I am interested in the Helm bolt because I love Tidal.

Yes, there's definitely an improvement in using a dongle dac instead of Bluetooth. Bear in mind however that you need to wire your headphones into the dac so you lose the convenience of wireless headphones.

So is there any point in investing in a dongle DAC for your Android phone if your streaming music "on the go"? It seems to me that there isn't...
@TheLtData
@TheLtData 3 года назад
If you use your phone with headphones for music on the go you'll be surrounded by so many other sounds and noise that i think high res isn't that important. Just enjoy the music and be aware of your surroundings such as traffic.

John, I own an LG V60 (I was thinking of chucking it for a Sony Xperia Model) Smartphone. I owned an Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt DAC (I gave it away, but I may reenliven that Marriage again). I see that you own here, an Audioquest Ara IEM. My question for you, I'm looking at purchasing a set of either U6ts or a U12ts, both from 64 Audio, (as you are well aware). Regarding a Marriage of the LG V60 with one of the Two 64 Audio Mentions, would you buy a AQ Dragonfly DAC or of another portable DAC ? (I used to be a Ultra High-End Audio Video Designer) The above Scenario would be for Gym purposes.

With my XM4s, the wireless mode sounds far better to me than using the wired mode, even plugged into my Modi 3. The DSP correction is far more effective in correcting the frequency response than a DAC in my experience
@LinasR
@LinasR 3 года назад
Have 1000X M3, but when wired they sound terrible. Try wire alternative the 1A m2 from Sony. In general if the headphones are wireless then no extra DAC should be used. If you want to squeeze the most of 1000x m3, check whereas LDAC codec is active (mostly available on Android 7 and up phones). But wireless is not for the MASTER, just use HiFi, Bluetooth doesn't have enough bandwidth to carry 1,4 Mbit of data (normal CD).

Definitely need an update to this. Currently using my iPhone 14 Pro Max with the Doppler music app. Effortlessly transfer my FLAC files via local WiFi - and with Apple’s solid Lightning To 3.5 Adapter ($9), listening to my music through my IEMs have been amazing 🤤 The only downside to using my iPhone is, of course, the lack of expandable storage. Not too bad since I’m not carrying my entire library with me anyways.

Same, i'm using Flacbox to play my local flac files, with a better dongle for hi res. Much better than streaming since I don't have to worry about songs randomly getting removed. I also upgraded my icloud storage to 200 gb and put my library there.

I’m thinking it shouldn’t matter too much if were speaking just audio quality. One will have access to alot more software to enhance an tweak the sound system wide, on an android, but shouldnt matter too much if youre a jailbreak wiz, its possible, its just sooo much work, and Android would prob still come out on top in the end. You will have access to a greater range of built in audio hardware with android which raises the likleyhood youre gonna have better audio quality. Then again, theres prob very little here that you could get from great hw versatility in the android eco system that you couldnt get from som external audio tech connected to your app.

Its seems in this case, this would be a strait digital terminal from one device to the next. If not can you help me figure this out? Appreciate it.
