This entire video, everything about how you present etc, the cameras, the gear you use and are into, are the reason you're easily one of my favorite RU-vidr's. GREAT content, and soooo damn relatable.
I wouldn’t say arri has a color science there colors are based off of film. That’s why out of the box the arri has a filmic look. The red camera actually is based on color science which is why it’s used by nasa and as a tool because of the accuracy of its color spectrum. Arri is the opposite they are not going for color science they are going for a emulation of film
Hello sir! Thanx 4 vdeo. I’m producing videos only for you tube. But I like shot in s-log in sunny day for having blue sky and information in shadows without noise. I have a Sony a7c and 8 bit is quiet problematic in these scenarios actually. If I’ll buy Sony a7sIII with 10 bit is it will helps me to avoid noise in shadows in Slog?
I had an Ursa Mini Pro G2 and sold it for the Alexa Classic like yours. I shoot ARRIRAW 2.8K with an Odyssey 7Q+. You can edit ARRIRAW inside Davinci Resolve. The G2 is nice, but just doesn't have that magic and gorgeous thick and smooth skin tones like Alexa. The Alexa is very forgiving on bad skin. The Pocket 4K is an amazing little beast though, I prefer it and the Pocket 6K to the G2. The truth is, that us filmmakers care amore about the cameras and gear than clients or the audience do. Lighting, talent, production design, and story are more important than the camera, or lenses. Great video. Thanks.
I thought you were a little slow my first time watching a video of yours. Since then I've watched every video on your channel. I love your communication style and content. Cheers!
Great video! I just bought a used arri as well. Came from a red and I have to say those skin tones. 😍😍😍 Arri certainly made a helluva sensor on those cameras.
Good point about equipment. I recently started out full time as a film maker. Before that I made RU-vid videos. Starting out I bought some decent equipment - I know for a fact that the camera will never hold me back, so now the rest is up to me. However, if I was filming on an iphone I would always wonder if I could have done better with better gear. Great video. Thanks for taking the time to share.
August Arnold and Robert Richter founded ARRI , AR-RI comes from arnold and richter. With that in mind, you'd think people would pronounce it "R-E". However, for whatever reason, the Germans and Brits pronounce it "Air-y". When in doubt, do as Deakins does.
Alexa still looking the best, it stands out and off the shoulder style is my favorite. Compact camera's are great to have but I'll still take the heavy shoulder camera every day of the week.
**PoTAtO JeT WaNtS tO kNOw YoUR LocAtiON** and yeah, with the iPhone's compression, Dynamic Range, and colour science, was there ever any contest? iPhone looks fine, tho
I thought the iPhone looked horrible. However, I'm sure he was using default settings and one could probably configure it to look a little more cinematic than the HDR mess I noticed.
I can't tell what this video is. Is it a comparison between the iphone and the alexa, or a lesson on how to use the alexa, or a history lesson of digital cameras, or reasons to buy the BMPCC!?
Ha, I'm gonna say A, A, and A for the Alexa. Still really proves the point you make at the end, though. Really great video, as usual. I shoot primarily with an Ursa Mini 4.6k, and sometimes we use a Sony a7iii as a B-cam, because I like how the dynamic range matches up. Blackmagic cameras have better color science I think, so I just color match the Sony footage to the Ursa in post. It hardly pushes the limit of the a7iii's 8-bit codec. No, it's not as ideal as just using a bunch of matched-spec Cinema cameras with a huge crew, but hey wouldn't we all? So many cameras are just ridiculously good these days. In 2015 I was shooting on a Canon t2i thinking the camera was holding me back. OH HOW I LAUGH. I was holding that thing back with bad lighting and a general lack of knowing what I was doing, even though I thought I was pretty film savvy by then. On that note, have you seen the Canon EOS M with Magic Lantern? People are getting continuous RAW shooting in full HD or higher on that little thing. The body sells used for like $130, and fast EF-M prime lenses by Canon and Meike are also dirt cheap. I might get one just to have beastly shooting specs that I can carry around wherever I go. We're rapidly losing excuses to not shoot stellar videos.
Looked at shot compares between the new Z Cam 6k (5 grand) and a RED (80 grand)...and they were soooooo close...close enough for the average audience member -- NOT THE INDUSTRY DPS and camera crews -- NOT to know the difference by watching...let alone care. As an Indie filmer working on my own...I'm going with 3 of the Z Cam6ks just out....and great old lenses I've researched....for a 3 camera feature indie. wish me luck.
I can't fully agree. I used t2i you mentioned years ago, Fuji xt-3, EOS M with ML on it and BMPCC 4k. And in my opinion Pocket 4k eats all of those alive. The t2i has crappy low bitrate codec, tons of aliasing. EOS M with ML has terrible dynamic range, clips very abruptly, the noise floor is extremely high, making iso 100 barely usable. Other than that, I admit the color science is really nice on EOS M.
@@testowykana1763 I don’t think you’re actually disagreeing with me at all, there. I’m not saying the T2i holds up to Blackmagic cameras, I’m just saying my amateur self mistakenly believed the T2i was what was preventing my videos from looking better. In reality, the videos could have looked a lot better still if Id actually known what I was doing. A lot of things I blamed the camera for were really coming from poor lighting and exposure, as well as bad color grading and post correction. It was just a mess. It almost wouldn’t have mattered if Id shot on an Alexa, the nicer technical image quality would not fix the glaringly amatuer shooting and post processing that was creating the look I didn’t like. Ive occasionally used that camera since then and I get hilariously improved results with it.
Epic Light Media no way me too! Maybe since I am the new content creator at my work (non profit Christian Family Care) we can meet with you or just do a zoom call now to help us decide on what to get for our small 4k budget? I am looking for any help we can get. Maybe we can pick your brain on what the best work flow will be since we are starting to soon.
Imagine an A-list actor standing on a set with a bunch of people pointing iPhones at her/him and not knowing which person is HMU, scripty, DP, or just someone posting on their Instagram feed. Really looking forward to seeing the Zeiss & Cooke lens options for the iPhone.
Dude, I really enjoy watching your videos! You definitely should have a milion + subscribers, so I'm a bit confused as to why that's not the case. I'm sure the channel is going to explode soon though, in terms of viewers / subs. It just has to, given the fantastic quality and entertainment value. ^^ Side note: It felt like I got ~5% less volume from the right channel on my headphones while watching this video. I played some other videos just to check, and they work fine. So the "issue" seems to only be apparent on this particular video. Thought you might wanna know, in case the problem lies within the video file itself. :)
Two videos in one day? We're not worthy! 😂 Also side-by-side, I can't stand the way the iPhone looks. But that Arri... ohhhhhhhhhh...sooooo buttery smooth 🤣
Even though the Alexa is old and (out of date) according to digital technology, the image is crystal clear and beautiful colour science, would work with it any day of the week over a newer black magic or red
Good Video...Stay on the right side of the law :) Also, in the last side by side comparison, when you compared the three cameras, I liked the vivid colors of the iPhone 11, but I liked the blurred background of the ARRI as well.
When I shot on my BMPCC4K and the external SSD was almost full, the camera also turned on for more than a minute. It’s good that they fixed it with the new firmware )
Arri has to be A! I think the detail is much more natural on the arri, much more digital on the iPhone. Also dynamic range looks more natural on the Arri and less like artificiall HDR.
Great video! Is it just me or is the general quality of youtube getting worse lately? They mentioned this, I guess it was 4 weeks ago that they will have quality issues. RU-vid does not look as crispy as usual, right? Or my vision is just...getting worse^^
ARRI offers a range of different camera models, providing the perfect solution for any production type or shot requirement. All of the cameras share ARRI’s unique combination of the highest image quality with the most efficient workflows on set and in post, which sets a gold standard for the industry. The Best Cameras for the Best Images !
Hello Epic Light Media ! Please, could you tell me what's the name of the music between 00:12 and 1:49 ? I love it, but can't find it anywhere... (Shazam doesn't recognize it)
Hmmm... Not sure its a "fair" comparison to put ND filters on the Arri and not the other two cameras (you can get them for iPhone). Also, iPhone shooters mostly use the Filmic Pro app (not the native app), which gives you much of the "control" you say only Arri has. And lastly, I don't think these camera comparisons EVER really mean anything at all because viewers only see the footage they are shown. Point is - if you shoot good footage on an iPhone (or an Arri or ...) it will look good to the viewer and they don't care what camera is used. They really dont.
I can always spot an arri. Theres a kind of greenish to the mids and shadows. Also the iphone just crushes all the details. Plus the iphone is super sharpened and has the extra resolution. The "softness" and dynamic range really give it away.
The iPhone is pretty much unusable in my opinion, and it's just because of that horrible over sharpening they don't let us turn off. I wonder if adding a promist filter to the iPhone could fix that? Interesting video
You admire alexa colours , but on all footages you show as exemples colour grading sucks hard. They looks like the were shot on huawei smartphone. Acid green grass etc.
Another reason why camera quality means NOTHING. I mean, if you work on events, weddings and so sure go get an expensive camera, but if you wanna be a filmmaker and you have $1000, don't get a $1000 camera, NEVER! Get a $300 camera and lenses, sound equipment, lighting setup, tripod, and everything you could possibly need.
People think Iphones look good, mp3s sound good, Taylor Swift is a singer and Trump was a good president too but Arri smokes everything else. EVERYTHING!
the moiré and the janky ass artificial sharpness in some of the details are a dead giveaway that B was the iphone. gotta say tho, i was looking for giant differences in dynamic range as an indicator but that wasn't as easy as i thought.
I owned a black magic ursa g1 and used it as my main camera for years. Swore by it and would even pass opportunities to rent arri minis to use black magic instead. Then it got the black screen of death (common dirty secret of ursas) and is now an expensive paperweight that black magic doesn't service anymore since it's cheaper to buy a new one. Lost faith in the brand after years of loyalty. Bought an arri classic for $2500 and had to spend an additional $1k in accessories to get it shooting. Pulled up my first test shots on my computer and realized immediately - It's better. Anybody who says black magics are just as good or better sometimes are coping. The now 14 year old arri classic blows any black magic image out of the water. I don't know quite what it is, I've compared many shots up close and side by side. It's overall a more pleasant image. Something about black magic is harsh and no matter how much I practice grading it or even pay other colorists it never had that edge that the arri sensor provides. I get it now.
Of course, the difference is huge. Alexa has that nice cinematic softness, whereas the iPhone image is kind of harsh and you can see that ugly digital postprocessing. The dynamic range on the iPhone is amazing though.
'It doesnt matter what equipment you use' tell that to producers that only want an Arri or Red, they have no idea why they want them, but they've seen them on sets before so take your Sony Venice and go home.
“A”looks completely natural in the sky where as “B” looks a little colour grading and High dynamic range is very good in B so iPhone intends to have good dynamic range so I’ll go with B iPhone 11 Pro and Arri alexa
