I love watching these videos. I like that the information is solid but done in such a manner that it's entertaining to listen to. Like having an excellent teacher in school that can make even the most basic of topics exciting. Thank you again.
Really looking forward to the next one. There's so much information out there about this stuff but most of it seems to go along the basis that you already have a pretty fair idea of wtf they're talking about. XD I like this because you explain everything and it really helps me, who is new to this whole thing, really understand what IPO is and what it's all about. : ) Thank you!
Thank you so much for these videos. We are new to IPO and your video truly explains the complexity and beauty of IPO - and makes it clear to me why we want to do this so much! EXCELLENT!
Very good Ashley. Following the first video was always going to be a hard act to follow and whilst its not as quite as good its certainly worthwhile, informative and entertaining even to those who have been in the sport a few years. Trying to constructive its probably only the first minute that's not quite right but many thanks for taking the time to do this.
It's really amazing! I am getting a service dog for my PTSD! And he was also trained in IPO! He is now trained fully to help me for my anxiety dissorder.
Okay, I love this. I just purchased a very expensive GSD from the Monks of New Skete. He is 4 months old right now. So far I think he is worth the money paid. His lineage is from German lines and Grandparents directly from Germany. I can't remember the name, starts with a K, Kirshental or close. Long line, well known, is all I can tell you. Anyway, trainers at school are all very experienced with award winning dogs of their own of different breeds, but GSD's as well. They tell me my GSD has the nicest temperament they have EVER seen in a GSD. Those Monks are doing something very, very right. God bless them.
There are always going to be people who put the extra effort in and create real quality. There are show people who are working really hard to promote working qualifications and visa versa. Its good to recognise and celebrate good work wherever it comes from.
Hi I’m a German Shepard. I remember when I first started my training. Oh the fun times we had. My handler was a bit crude but I guess it was for my best although it was a bit weird when they kept touching my testies. I can hardly wait to see my son achieve what I have or even better. Thank you Germany!!
Travis, Thanks for the insert in the video. I appreciate it. Hope you can understand the whys of my posts. Look forward to more of your creative works!!
I love your vids, thank you! I have my own German Shepherd here in the U.S. and I've been wondering what and if I should put her into something like this. Your videos are very informative and helpful, keep up the good work! :)
love these videos, perhaps you could make one highlighting and explaining the difference between working and showline shepherds, some find it very confusing especially when show dogs have schutzhund qualifications to understand the difference....looking forward to the next one, marti wood
We will actually be making and selling them, one of our clients has got a fancy machine that makes really nice plastic ones that slot together so you can take the front or sides away if you want to. He's bringing some down on Thursday for us to look at and we'll probably sell them on our online shop.
I feel the same as you. There's no need for 'sides', its like the whole 'Elvis vs The Beatles' thing, you can like one, or the other, or both, they're not mutually exclusive. The most rewarding experiences I've had are when we get to help show people with work stuff and when show people help us with show stuff (cuz we haven't got much of a clue when it comes to showing but we still believe its important to do the basics for breeding purposes).
Its hard trying not to alienate other breeds, all sorts of people are interested in IPO but I've only ever known GSD's. Didn't want to turn those people off from the start, but I know what you mean! Next one is gonna be more IPO focussed. Will probably be about Helper Work but I did change my mind 3 times last week on the topic of Episode 2 until dad came up with the GSD Curriculum idea at the last minute.
The 'unsuitable dogs' photos were only used to signify that there is no place for status dogs or irresponsible dog owners in IPO. My problem when trying to find pics that signify that concept concisely without it being copyrighted, showing any peoples faces or grotesque abuse is quite difficult. Those photos were the closest thing that would transmit the concept clearly. Its nothing against any particular breed.
The Kennel Club in the UK won't acknowledge the IPO qualifications either. They're only interested in promoting show breeding. We're fortunate in that we're so geographically close to Germany that we are able to get their health tests and certificates from the SV. Not so easy from the opposite side of the planet!
like you mentioned mate other countries (like mine Australia) are very behind in keeping up the standard of the GSD breed. Our governing body doesn't even recognize the BH title or any other IPO title. IPO is even band in some states. Awesome videos but keep them coming.
Thanks for the great post. I'm new to this sport and took notice of the open ended box that you used as a prop to train for proper position. Do you have recommendations as to what dimensions to use as I would like to duplicate that if that is cool with you. Thanx in advance!
Showing is more popular than the working dog sports so we probably need more emphasis on promoting the working attributes than conformation - but I still want my working german shepherd to look like a german shepherd. Some people are happy with dogs that might look like Quasimodo but have good drives, we personally want to breed dogs that have excellent working traits AND at the very least meet the minimum of 'good' conformation wise. Nothing needs to be compromised if the effort is put in.
we have always wanted a gsd and I have watched so many videos and read many many posts... this part 2 video really sums up in like you say layman's terms to your average joe like me! we have not long lost our American Akita and well let's just say the breed (gsd) looks world's apart, overall smarter and more athletic Imo. thanks and keep up the good work!! 👏
Thats exactly what I wanted to achieve! Even for me its hard keeping track of whats going on, like not knowing that theres no such thing as Keorklasse 1 and 2 anymore just pass or fail. Thats after trawling through all my German Shepherd books (which are all years old) and the SV website, which I have to translate from German. Its a nightmare getting updated easy to access info...
Although it's a good idea for the novice out there, those kinds of videos, discussions etc. always breaks down into all kind of brawl and polarization. I love your videos, Travis. However, I fear a video like this (show vs work) will be more detrimental than constructive. Most people seem divided in factions, although I personally like both "sides". There are show lines with great mentality, just like there are working lines with good conformation. These dogs and breeders should be encouraged.
I've added an annotation to that section now. Its hard finding appropriate stuff to use, its nothing against any particular breed. I didn't mean to cause any offense, I should have put something there before I put the video out, sorry!
A working breed has to pass all these tests in all countries of europe i think. Czechs, Slovaks and Hungarians also have to pass these if they want to breed their working breeds, not just Germans.
wow! mine are untrained-lol my ex brother in law is John Riboni- a trainer out of California and he always tells me to learn about this stuff and train my girls. Amazing video-glad I've discovered them.
Ireally enjoyed both videos so please this is constructuve information. I'm sure you may have not intended anything against the other breeds you used.Thevideo is about the GSD should have been completely the GSD. May I suggest that you might use llustrated drawings of the GSD showing those behaviors. I am postive you could have found someone to do that. IMHO I feel you could have thought that segment out a bit more. Please take more care in regards to breeds other than the GSD. Thanks!
Basically this separates the 500$ German Shepherds from the $1,000 & high up range it doesn't mean that a $500 German can't turn out to be beautiful & just as capable as these ipo Shepherds it's just that the ipo Shepherds are very proven in all areas & keeps a strong lineage of pedigree so it's kinda of like U know what type of dog U pretty much will be getting through this system I think it's pretty unique and awesome!!! I don't see a need for negative comments this is what separates Germany from other places!!
Do you believe the conformation standard is suitable? I mean what is the benefit of a 23% angulation of the croup? It's unnecessary and lends itself to skeletal degeneration.
Ok this is a super video but I have one complaint... YOu could have used the GSD through out the video even in the segment on poor temperament. Why use other breeds to show undesireable, ugly and scared temperament? I am certian you could find GSD's showing the same behaviors.
Sorry have to totally disagree with you on this as we (working line folk) often do Breed surveys with SV judges, to make sure our working line GSD's are of a HIGH STANDARD for breeding. Yes we pay for SV judges to come over and judge our trials. armed with this new information do you still think us working line folk do nothing?????
why did you highlight the pitbull with X? this all reverts back to owner not the dog!!! this shows how unprofessional this is..! pitbulls can also be well trained well a proper owner is raising them!!!
