I think for people that like coding in the evenings etc. or in general prefer the dark editor color theme, it might be even worse on a VA - as I understand, smaller gray-to-gray transitions are even slower and that's precisely what happens in that case - dark editor themes do not use white text on black background, but a combination of colors with lower contrast so that they are more natural for human eyes not evolved for high contrasts in dark environments and don't cause retinal "burn-in" issues.

Eh, smearing while coding in a dark mode (Well, in my experience a dark grey background) isn't the worst on a VA. It's not bad enough that I can't scroll through my code quickly to identify the blocks I'm looking for, and most of the time the image is static. I have a PLS, IPS and VA in my monitor setup and my main coding window usually lives on my VA because the smearing doesn't effect it's functionality. I don't like to game on my VA, though.

Coming from IPS for almost 15 years now and trying VA for once (due to I needed an ultrawide real estate for my work), in coloration: VA is surprisingly tolerable for color work-related purposes, but VA still has its downside esp when it comes to bleed, full black screen, and to others you might even noticed some unevenness (I got lucky my current VA monitor was well-manufactured and its stock calibration is good). But if purely for gaming though, VA and IPS doesn't really factor that much to be honest. In the end, it can still boils down to the quality of the product: A well-optimized and quality VA monitor is worth considering and can be a good alternative to a decent or average quality IPS monitor.

Those "deeper blacks" on VA are useless in my opinion, because you must increase your brightness so you have less black smearing because of VA's technology. Any movement on a VA panel messes things up; for instance, if you have a star dotted sky and the scene moves, the stars dissapear while the camera moves, because the black pixels take too long to change from black to a color. I use a 34 inch ultrawide 2k VA display for working, general computer usage and gaming. Its fine for casual use but for gaming is not that good, and sometimes my mouse dissapears while everything is still normal on my older TN display.
@nerd20fromdiscord
@nerd20fromdiscord 6 месяцев назад
Increasing brightness will not reduce the black smearing much at all but decreasing contrast will, and yes your correct decreasing contrast makes black into grey but it also makes a va panel not literally hurt your eyes while using it, i am currently the owner of a va panel and i run it at half of the stock contrast settings in nvidia control panel to make it even slightly usable

Be careful with IPS panels though. Nano IPS panels specifically. It strain your eyes very badly, even only after minutes. It's very unhealthy and definitely not recommended by A LOT of people. I appreciated the spirit behind this video and the update with the G7 but the result is flawed. I couldn't find an RL way to test VA black smear so I relied on videos like this from reviewers and other PC gamer's opinions. The panel shown here must be one of the worst for black smearing, the scrolling dark mode almost convinced me not to get VA at all. The G7 is known as the best VA panel period so of course that one doesn't have it. I thankfully saw other videos that swayed me and got a DELL VA and the smearing is something that you see but that doesn't really affect anything important. Just thought I'd leave the comment here for anyone else in a similar position. I'm very happy with my new monitor.

This is a good comparison, but I still think it's a little unfair. VA monitors does have smearing because pixels have lower response time and the alligment doesn't help, but have significantly better blacks. Also IPS suffers from heavy Back light bleeding and glow, almost as hard as the smearing on a VA, maybe your IPS has a good control on that issue or the recording does help mitigate it. But as VA can't get rid of smearing (helps to tune your monitor with included settings), IPS can't get rid of glow/blb. To me having used both, I still choose a good VA with good settings, as I always play on a dark room, can't tolerate bleeding.

One thing to note is that a VA panel could be problematic for FPS games where you have enemies hiding in slightly dark corners. The VA panel will completely hide the enemies sometimes, so for that reason alone i ended up returning it in. I had my squad shouting in the mic while playing Cyber Attack in Mw19 for me not noticing enemies in obvious corners. While te VA panel was a little bit more "immersive" for movies and offline games where the contrast is better, I was overall more happy with the shift to IPS.

In most games smearing isn't so noticeable - only if you are looking maniacally for that. IPS is a difficult sell to me with its lacking blacks, also something you failed to mention is the prevalence of IPS GLOW and BACKLIGHT BLEED, these are panel deflects that are very common on IPS displays, you can even see it in this video when the blacks are compared in the bottom left of the display where the area is brighter than the rest of the display (backlight bleed). If you want a good gaming experience at night, get a good VA display and you won't have as many issues as shown in this video, do your research before buying, check reviews and buy from a company with an easy returns policy if you're unsure.

You've made a few mistakes. Firstly, the only way to actually compare both panels would be to run them in desktop color > reference mode on an Nvidia card. This basically defaults to outputting only the sRGB color space, regardless of program. On top of that, the black dimming problem is from OverDrive (OD) option on the monitor being at maximum. What's going on is it's "overclocking" the pixels, which involves prediction of how pixels activate and change, and the maximum settings on OD always overshoots the prediction, causing a blur/smearing outline effect that also ends up dimming things. So it's not a panel issue, it's a setting issue. It seems to also be that specific monitor that makes it worse, because with my panel I do not get dimming that extreme even with OD at extreme setting. The viewing angles also seem to be because of that specific monitor, because my VA panel does not have such a radical difference in viewing angles. The fact that it's curved would also add some discrepancy, because it makes the viewing angle even steeper. The curving of it could even be part of the issue in the first place, as putting these panels under tension does wash out their colors. I would imagine that unless you set the brightness precisely based on the monitors total light output, and dividing that to get an equal number, you also likely didn't have equal brightness between the monitors. In fact, the LG can range from 280-350 cd/m2 at maximum, while the ViewSonic has 250 cd/m2. So setting them both to the same brightness number, could range in brightness difference by 10-30%. VA's can look almost as good as OLED in a dimly lit room at night, and during a bright day. The trick is you do really need to set the brightness appropriate to the rooms brightness. ULMB is also another feature that can massively increase clarity on fast moving scenes, since it strobes the backlight like a CRT would. It also allows you to get even better blacks on VA, because since it's strobing, it's the same brightness, but only half the time, so it's overall less bright. So 20% brightness at default, is equal to 10% brightness for ULMB. Everything else is also dimmer of course, but the brighter areas don't dim as much because they're not blocking light as much as the darker pixels, so what you get is a better contrast ratio because the backlight is physically off during the strobing, and reducing backlight bleed. Some of the color differences also seem to come from the backlight color temperature setting itself, as you can see the IPS has a more neutral/gray/bluish tint to it, while the VA has a sort of yellowish green tint to it. This means the monitors backlight isn't calibrated properly. What you would need to do is go into the menu and adjust the color temperatures individual R/G/B settings to balance it out, not in the OS, but in the monitor menu itself if it has that option, because doing it in the OS will only shift things out of the sRGB color space. Outside of that, the only other way to calibrate it is to use actual calibration hardware like a Spyder. This can cause issues with color vibrancy when comparing the two, shifting colors to darker or lighter versions of themselves. So a red with too much green in it for example, will look more orange.

4 months late to the reply but yea, there are definitely major discrepancies in his testing methodology. From someone who was a professional photographer for a number of years, hands down the IPS panels are a mainstay when you're doing visual arts work. But, VA has its usages too. As someone who has both right now, the VA panel I have for my gaming monitor is not nearly as bad or as bad as this test was. For people who are shopping, please do more research as this video fails to address a lot of issues in both IPS vs. VA and not just the stuff this video address which are very barebones on the surface with a flawed testing method.

A lot of people say if you use your monitor at night, VA is probably better. And I was considering maybe getting one because IPS glow is super annoying. But I don't think I could live with the black smearing, it's really, really bad. I recently spent hours researching monitors after owning several IPS and purchased a VA for one reason- in a dark room / low light conditions it looks better because of those deeper blacks and low backlight leakage. I think that's one angle you could have discussed. If you are curious I chose a Samsung 27" VA curved gaming monitor with 144hz refresh. Comparing it to my Alienware 240hz IPS monitor you can definitely tell the VA has motion blur in tests so it may not be ideal for fast paced action games like Fortnite / Call of Duty.

So if i play only in dark place, its better to chose VA ?

I was about to buy a VA monitor but then I got this in my recommendations and I’m happy that I haven’t bought it yet, I guess I’ll go with IPS

@@baboom007 on my specific monitor blacks and viewing angles are great, although there is a bit of backlight bleed visible at the bottom and top, not much tho

I dont know how you're going to stomach using it as a secondary monitor next to an IPS. I had to return my VA and fork up more money for a matching IPS monitor and I'll never go back.

I did just the opposite. How can you endure that low contrast ratio ?

@@volkan.kucukkkk With money! I simply bought a 500$ IPS 165hz instead, and its 1:1000 ratio doesn't bother me at all.

@@kylegarrett2429 I had LG 27GL270-B Ips monitor shown in this video, and my unit had around 1:800 ratio and although I loved the vividness of all colors, dark and black scenes were a mess and I love to play in dark envoirements. So I sold it and bought a Samsung's new G7, a 240 hz monitor, which has far more superior panel than Lg. I admit, colors are not so vivid and eye-catching like an ips but oversaturated colors on ips monitors hurt my eye after 1 hour of usage so I am all happy with my new 1:3800 ratio va panel with inky blacks

@@volkan.kucukkkk Nice, Recently I've been gaming on a Q70T 65' which is a VA panel too, so I get it. I just couldn't stand the two next to each other, especially with the gaming monitor being the dimmer one.
