Best bit of business done by a manager ever. Sold Brian Talbot for £450,000 and bought Thyssen and Muhren for a combined £400,000, and still had £50,000 left over!!!!!
@@Ruda-n4h Totally agree. At that time I think there were only four foreign players in Div 1 & the Spurs two got all the news coverage - & what was left went to Muhren - but Thyssen was amazing to watch - stuff that never got seen outside Portman Road.
Ipswich are a really unique and quite special side. Very small town, certainly at this time, and a smallish club but had tremendous success in the game in 1970s and early 1980s. One of the top sides in Europe and a team full of great players. And then before that Sir Alf Ramsey won the championship. So they competed with the very best for a sustained period and will always have tradition in their blood.
@UC8c_TsbXpqmI8zEIx%F0%9F%91%8DbybQYQ Wait, did you just try and correct my grammar by adding a redundancy to my statement? If you were then you could have at least gone for "in any European competition" 👍👍
my late Father was at this match, he would recall it fondly... i thought i would look it up and hopefully watch it in his memory... love ITFC, love Ipswich, love my Da.... ty v much for the upload xx
I was there, wonderful days to a Ipswich fan. Real Madrid,Barcelona, manure etc etc etc all beaten by a little old team from East Anglia managed by a genius and all done with no money just class
Still one of the most remarkable matches at Portman Road, especially with Johnny Wark out, Mick Mills in midfield and Kevin Beattie as left Wing Back years ahead of his time!
What wonderful memories, it all came back. Used to stand in the North Stand, same spot every home game, 3 pints before the match in The Sporting Farmer and a pie with meat- type filling at half time, then back up the A140 to Eye. A lot of the Man U fans were from Suffolk, a couple of lads in our local had gone, fun seeing them at opening time. Thanks for posting.
I remember this as a kid watching the final scores coming through in a TV shop window. Was absolutely stunned by it, six bloody nil. Watched the highlights the next day on The Big Match. Looking back it shouldn't have been a surprise with the likes of Nicholl, Sloane,Houston and Grimes in the side.
United fan, was at Ipswich that day, my Bro is Ipswich fan, happy memories, was only a kid, but you could stand and wow, what an Ipswich team, what a team. Didn't Gary Baily save us 3 pens? RIP Sir Bobby.
Probably the last golden age of English football...Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Liverpool winning the league then European cup, different winners of the league cup and fa cup...when they actually meant something.
I was 10 and lived and died for Ipswich, as I do now! After the 5th goal went in the United fans started throwing coins and things into the Town fans, the little old lady sitting next to me was hit in the temple with a United bracelet. Sat next to her every other Saturday for 5 years and all she had to say was, it was worth it!
To Robienco1 and Shad: I apologize also. The atmosphere was better in those days, devoid of these poofish social media talking heads who make money with their live streams, subs, and videos from their basement libraries -- dragging and brainwashing fans into spouting their calculated critiques like darned primpy broadcasters.
Brilliant team that Ipswich side was, a bit like the old Leeds team , both clubs should have won more trophies with the side they had....Mariner was my fave player ..
I don't remember this game or result, but I enjoyed watching it (had to watch when I saw the score in the title!). If it had not been for Richard Clayderman in goal, Ipswich might have had double figures. Ipswich missed two penalties (one of them twice!) and still beat Man Utd 6-0!
I was a kid at this game, Ipswich fan , I remember Kevin Beattie juggling with the ball just waiting for a Utd player to bother to come and challenge him for the ball, was probably 5 or 6 nil by that stage. Great team . Pity Newcastle didn’t get Bobby Robson after KK left for the 1st time , might have done better than he did when he arrived some time later.
Oh, I don't know. Ipswich are currently top of League One and Manchester United are heading for a relegation dogfight. They could both be in the Championship next season!
@@daddykornflakes Which United? There are many. If you are referring to Manchester United, in 1979/80 they finished 2nd, amazingly (after this dreadful performance). They also finished second in 2020/21, which was a lot better than the season that has just finished.
@@portcullis5622 I was referring to Manchester United, as you had mentioned them, and I was replying to you and the season you mentioned, and because your RU-vid comment just said '2 years ago,' I wasn't sure which season that was. I doubt any of the so-called big six will ever be demoted to the Championship, because times have changed so much and they'll unfortunately be permanent fixtures. The late 60s, 70s and early 80s days are gone forever, although Leicester winning the league from out of the blue in 2016 was like a breath of fresh air, only previously seen by Forest in 78 and Ipswich in 62, insofar as totally unexpected title wins go.
Anybody who thinks things are bad now well think again. I was at this game, the football special back to Piccadilly broke down somewhere in the middle of nowhere and we got to Manchester just before 4am. I had no money just missed the 101 night bus not another one for 2hours so I walked home to Baguley. SEXTON OUT !
+Craig Windram For a moment there Craig I thought you were going to alk about the Man United performance in this game, by eck times were tough back then, coming from an Evertonian , and ive only ever been to one away game, id love to see us play like Ipswich did back then.
2:41 - "Unfortunate [Gary Bailey's] father wasn't able to come from South Africa to see this game." I imagine Bailey thought afterwards that was for the best, all things considered, even with the penalty saves.
Must have been a sight after the game seeing all those shell shocked United fans heading home to ..London...Exeter.....Coventry...Worcester.......The Shetlands...
People getting their sense of perspective wrong with this one. Man Utd were not a "world club" back in 1979-80. True, they had a very good support in England on the back of Munich and George Best but they certainly weren't the club they are today.
Rubbish ... Man U finished runners up to Liverpool that year and only just missed out on the championship ... class side but Ipswich were a class above for a small period ...
True united were a massive club with huge support some great players and the biggest and best stadium in the country but didn’t have great teams . that season was prob the only time we contested for the title in the 70s,80s , we were just a decent fa cup team in reality.
Amazing what moving off the line was considered to be back then. The keepers barely move at all. Been watching football videos from the 70's a lot recently and seen this call many times.
Detomaso Pantera There was the uncharacteristic mistake by Coppell for the 6th. Some of Bailey’s positioning was shocking that day. He became a decent goalie mind. I saw him play his debut, actually against Ipswich in 78, where we beat them. Sloan, who? Ashley Grimes was rubbish, no offence. This team was just disjointed, even if we did have almost half the Scottish National team in our side.Typical Dave Sexton organisation, he was out of his depth. Taking nothing away from Ipswich & Sir Bobby. They were a great side.
Gary Bailey saved them from further embarrassment ... he did the best he could. Wonder what David de Gea would have done after some recent Karius moments?
I hope United had been out on the lash the night before. Otherwise.... Pity Sir Bobby never got a chance to manage at United. I think we could have done great things with him in charge.
I think the high light was when Jimmy Nicholl playing for man u kicked the ball at the Ipswich player 10.47 or so and called him a Twat lmfao pure class from the Belfast Man
Bit of an urban myth that Bailey saved 3 penalties. One was taken twice so regardless if he saved the one that didn't count it was only 2. What was most astonishing was keepers didn't wear gloves those days! LOL!
Never seen such inept defending by a First Division side, not even one headed for relegation. Had I been a United fan at the time, I would have demanded an investigation. Could gambling interests have affected the outcome?
Cont. Ipswich had a great side in the late 70s/early 80s and if they’d have played as well in the first half of 79-80 (13th with 21 points after 21 games) as in the second (picking up 33 points out of a possible 42) they’d have won the league with points to spare. United had a fantastic away following in the late 70s/80s which unfortunately contained a lot of undesirables who often went only to cause trouble e.g. at Norwich in 77 which led to a short ban (although this was easily circumvented!).
Great performance by Ipswich, although the main entertainment was provided by the Man Utd defence - absolutely hilarious - and what a day for Gary Bailey. Also nice work by Gerry Harrison - ITV´s all-time best football commentator.
@@colinwalker1523 mate I'm a Norwich fan but a 6-0 home victory to United no matter how good or bad they were then is still an achievement, let them have their day, they were a quality team in the 70s
Arnie Muhren is loved more here than at your place, he won a european trophy with Ipswich, just the F.A cup with your lot. Without Fergie the Mancs are going back to the way they were in the eighties, a good cup fighting side but nothing in the league. how many points are you behind your noisy neighbours?? They are slowly catching you, so are Chelsea. I can see in maybe ten years United disintegrating as a major european team, a bit like Arsenal are now. Fergies shoes are too big for ANYONE to fill, and I cannot see Mourinho creating a legacy like Fergie did a few times. What United need as a manager is someone who knows United, bleeds United, and isn't afraid of the egos at United. And who isn't an ego himself. The other european teams haven'e got the pressure United have (thank you Sky!!) so they can build fortresses over a few years. Man U need silverware NOW!! They need the premiership NOW!! And with Chelsea, Man City etc all winning the league at a canter it is getting very difficult to see United winning the prem in the next five years. But we shall see, only time will tell. And btw, Barcelona, they were managed by BOBBY ROBSON!!!! Who at Ipswich is a total legend.
Best part of this vid is Man U were 2nd in the table, Ipswich were 3rd. It should have been a close game, Ipswich gave them a shoeing. Ipswich in 1980 were an awesome side.
I was too young to go to this game.. but a big Ipswich Town fan.. my brother, a couple of years older and a Man U fan did go, it was his first game.. when he got home he burst into tears.. I miss those days
Abject performance by Man Utd but Mariner deserved his hat trick. Always liked him as a player - good with both feet, brilliant with his head and a good team player. Good temperament too.
RIP Paul Mariner, i had a high view of him...i wonder if a better England manager than Greenwood would have got the best out of him and those players of the time..
Great memories - we had a good record against Man Utd in the 70's - 4-0 4-1 3-0 and 3-0 before this 6-0 effort. A few days later I was on a coach to Everton for fa cup sixth round game, we were overtaken by a Millwall fans coach - instead of the usual abuse we might have expected, they were cheering us and holding up six fingers - they really did not like United :)
Not sure how Nicholl stayed on the pitch after being (rightly) booked. He called the referee a "twat" and there were at least two "fuckings" in there as well! When I played Sunday morning football we would have been sent off for much less than that! Then he followed that up by conceding a penalty with a foul that was definitely bookable, but he got away with it!
Paul Mariner. RIP. I was at Wembley the night he scored the England winner to beat Hungary and qualify for the 1982 World Cup finals (after 12 years in the wilderness). Misty watercolour memories, of the way we were.
Our coach driver thought United were playing Norwich and was almost there (travelling along the A47) before the mistake was realised. Due to this it looked like we’d be late arriving for the match and my fried lamented “we’ll probably get beaten 7-0!”). We got into the ground just as the game was kicking off. I seem to remember that Dave Sexton told Martin Buchan to mark Eric Gates who dropped back into midfield leaving a massive 'hole’ in our United’s which Ipswich exploited to the full. TBC
Always great when ManUtd lose, especially when they are hammered. When I was at games in those days, the crowd would always give out a huge roar when a ManUtd defeat was announced.
United had just come back from a friendly against Red Star Belgrade, which they also lost 0-6. I don't know what went on in those few days but otherwise they were strong that season. Took the title battle to the last day.
Cant stand Utd, but those fans singing We'll support you evermore when they were five nil down. Fair play to them. Not like the plastic Man Ure fans of today.
