Comrade Bepsi Marx eh as American the coalition system is a little mind boggling due to how big or confusing they get, and I’m surprised how back and forth leaders or Ireland
@@proudinfidel2194 That link leads to the most ignorant, and hysterically funny, version of Irish history that I have ever seen. Hilariously, delusionally, stupid.
Update: Enda Kenny has since stepped down and Leo Varadkar is now leader of Fine Gael and Taoiseach. Thanks to Jimín and Cathal for helping with the script. Also, I'm guessing there will be a lot of poor pronunciations. 2 I've picked up on is "Michael" instead of "Micheal" and the occasional Fine "GARL"
I like the new format immensely. Could you do the UK after the general election this year? there are some interesting political trends that are just begging to be analysed like this.
I really like this series. I may not be voting in Ireland any time soon, but it makes me feel like an informed global citizen while at the same time keeping me entertained. Really appreciate the time that goes into these longer-form videos.
Jack Rackam Ireland might just have the most superior manner in electing their leaders. As an American I am jelous. Our scum bags keep getting elected with sub 30% favorability ratings.
Do one about Japanese political landscape please man! your Taisho democracy episode was so interesting it'd be cool to see you explain Japan's politics more
This is a very good video. Like a lot of people I find politics boring but know the importance of it. I will have to watch this video a few times to fully grasp everything and normally that would be a chore. However, this video is done very well. It's to the point without being boring. Thank you Jabzy.
I'm an American and I don't see how this political system is very complex/hard to understand. Yes, it sounds more complex than the American political system, but it isn't actually. Also the Irish political system seems way more representative and in touch with the people than the American system.
Qernanded and here in Ireland an independent politician who enters government has a very good chance of achieving his promises to his constituency. because the government has to keep them happy.
Pronunciation of Senead = "Shan-ed" Pronunciation of Dáil Éireann= "Doyle Air-In" Pronunciation of Fianna Fáil= "Fee-Na fall" Sinn Fein was created in 1912 and was reformed in the 1970s. Gerry Adams has only been party leader since 1982
@@eyan4329 Sir, why would Americans do that? I am very sorry about that. Also, I'm trying to learn Irish Gaelic. Also, trying to move to Ireland as well. Reason being is well, don't you ever know that feeling that you don't belong to there but to somewhere else?
Wow!! As an American I wish we voted on our leaders that way. That is such a superior manner to elected politicians. Lets the people pick their candidate instead of the candidate picking their voters.
Jabzy, great video! Though I have some constructive criticism. I think when you talk "politics", it must stray away from representative politics to reach out a broader definition. I was hoping you would go in more detail on the IRA and the conollians of Ireland; as I think you made the same "mistake" in the last video, on Peru, when you mentioned the Sendero Luminoso and Gonzalo only briefly.
Very interesting. If you're looking for more challeging countries to cover then Belgium with it's states, communities and six governments is worth looking in to.
Don't worry about not getting the pronunciation right on everything..people who wish to berate you over that are a bit ridiculous. The factual basis of the Irish political system was far more important than the pronunciation of the seanad and dáil and you did a super job on that. Thanks!
Great new video series I hope to see all the major countries really interested in Japan and China current state of affairs keep up the good work love ya
How does someone not know how to pronounce “Gael”? Also Sinn Féin is related to the original Sinn Féin, it's a reformed version of it. Many people believed that the modern split offs of Sinn Féin (Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael) forgot the original values of the party so they brought it back
It doesn't inspire confidence when in the first few seconds it's apparent that you cannot even pronounce the names of the Houses of the Irish government.
All major Irish parents were founded or worked with IRA members not just Sinn Fein. Sinn Fein is just the one we remember because they worked with the IRA most recently.
Scottish Independence yes it's looking inevitable given both parts of Ireland want to remain with the EU but it won't be without tension that's just fact but given your user name yes I hop Scotland becomes independent too !
Our issue in Scotland right now is many pro-Remain pro-Indy voters are remaining on the pro-Indyref2 side, however pro-Remain anti-Indy and pro-Leave pro-Indy supporters are both on the wall. Many of them want to see the outcome of Brexit. Pro-Leave voters in particular want to see how things turn out with the Single Market, leaving the single market could swing them to prefer the EU over the UK; the same is true for Remainers. Proving to Leave voters that the EU costs Scotland less and is more democratic than the UK (which it is for both); whilst letting Remain campaigners know Scotland will be able to rejoin the EU relatively quickly (which it will), then we can easily win them over.
Seems like the Alternative Vote is making miracles. Do the Irish people like it as much as I imagine? Or is just me? PS: to whoever made this video, You are a star, you and whoever worked on it. I wish you can make this on every country in the world, and their history. But I guess you have a life too... so... nvm.
Stefan Stancioiu I personally like the alternative vote. it means I can rate politicians in order of my choice. so if my first choice gets a big majority, my second choice might get in aswell. And that second choice for me is usually from a different party.
I’ve often wondered howSinn Fein is considered a left/liberal party when their position on several key issues is invariably right-Wing. Not too dissimilar to the AfD here in Germany in point of fact.
if you have any aspirations of becoming a politician come to Ireland it is one of the most corrupt countries in the world, think about this u can destroy a country and it's people with no consequences get a huge salary and expenses and then walk away on a huge pension, usually 2 or three of them.
Hehe thanks for replying! but not going to lie - slightly underwhelmed by the answer ¬¬; Was it like a "I am going to spin the globe wherever my finger lands l'll do" kinda situation? In any case it is awesome to see such well researched content on overlooked places.
Well I just thought there 1,000,000+ videos on RU-vid covering American politics, but very little on every other country. So just thought I'd look into some other countries.
Interesting effect on subject matter when compressed: actually some clarity emerges. The presentation seems even handed, although some might disagree. When standing back, the view appears to support centrist approaches. The nearer to center a party achieves, the better they do in the polls. But the instinct has been to pull right or left. All parties can claim originality, all can say they resolve issues. But the ones going for inclusivity usually win the day. It is easier to tear down an opponents reputation than it is to build your own on merit. The Republic deserves a better life, just like the rest of the world. Maybe the elected officials could watch this (over the protestations of all) and benefit from building consensus. Not as much bombast as the past approaches, but more effective.
I know this will be controversial but I believe those who identify as Nationalist in Northern Ireland should be able to vote in Ireland election lower house but not the president, but any laws pass, won't impact Northern Ireland.
Can someone please answer this question, it's for an assignment. Do you think there are any problems with Irish Politics and if there are, what are they and how can you solve them? Thank you
My understanding: after breaking away from the English, Irish voters kept flip flopping between two center right parties and labor just supporting whichever was slightly more left, now after long periods of center right politics people are looking to labor and SF as left wing alternatives.
Hatred Clay Sinn Fein won't ever get a majority. in my opinion they are just populists who say what ever will get them votes. such as water charges, they are for them in the North, but against them in the republic. So i dont see them getting into power, even in a coalition.
The split over the Anglo Irish treaty was not over partition it was over the oath to the king that had to be taken to sit in the Dail. Only Sean macentee and Micheal Collins had any real concerned for the North
Enthused Norseman even then it passed with the lowest majority of any referendum we have ever had. a few 1000 votes the other way and it would have been rejected. also divorce is a 5 year process. doesn't really matter anyway because we have a very low divorce rate anyway.
Ireland, before E.U subsidies was the poorest country in Western Europe. My parent's who grew up in the 60's and 70's in rural west of Ireland, literally had nothing by Western standards. Now, I live in a prosperous, modern and free nation thanks to the E.U.
