Ireland: Total War - Let's Play Mide in Thrones of Britannia Ep. 1 

Oh no, it doesn't have any of the important buildings that I need to win the game! Maybe Brega will go down there...

I wanted to see what the base game was like before trying out the shieldwall mod but it looks like I should have gone straight for it! Once I have this playthrough done I'm going to make some videos on the buildings and history in the game, like the bullauns and round towers, and then do a shieldwall playthrough later on as Dublin

I've seen people complain about them online but I really like them, they fit well with the setting

I'm having a bit of trouble with the legitimacy system and if it wasn't for that I'd be be really enjoying the game. I can see why he ranks poorly amongst TW games though.

It's a fun game but basically abandoned by the developer upon launch, could have been so much better. They were mostly trying to cash in on anything related to "Vikings" tv show at the time.

Have you played with the "Shieldwall" mod? I've heard a lot of good things about it but overall I'm enjoying the game as is, with the exception of some voice lines! My complaint about the Horse Boys is that if they are ordered to attack a unit and that unit charges them they retreat (which is good) but don't reengage (which is bad). I'd like them to "kite" whatever I send them to attack; throw javelins, withdraw if charged and then reengage. Instead they just withdraw and stand around with their back to the enemy! I usually put them on melee combat to mop up retreating units and gain some xp. What faction used you play as and what was your favorite military unit?

@@ManiacalInc I had to go back into steam for a look, 946 hours played. I subbed to shieldwall 12/12/21 and last played 23/12/21. Checking the mod, I don't remember the population element so I can't comment. The overhaul mod I was playing with was Radius Total War Mod (LU 2019) and manics expanded factions mod so Mayo could cross the sea and give a good hiding all about them. Fully agree with the lack of reengagement! Often remember being in the thick of it and forgotten the horse boys who had ran off to hide in the trees... I didn't really have a favorite unit, I remember the lvl1 spears were pure muck, same for most lvl1s but spears especially. Charges from the generals or horsemen in the sides/back while horse boys annoy their horse was the easiest way to break enemies and my go to. And cheese with bridges of course. Governor's loyalty was a pure pain, every upgrade for them had to be a priest but that could have been on the harder levels.

That's more time than I've put into all the TW games I own! A lot of great potential in the game, I'm hoping the Medieval 3 rumors are true.

It's a joke Irish people like to make. It was excavated and heavily reconstructed in the late 60's. The retaining wall (the white part) was constructed using concrete and a lot of what has been done is ahistorical. It's very controversial and was described by one historian as "Stalin does the Stone Age".

I sometimes worry that I talk too long in these videos so I make stupid jokes like this and hope that people go and check out what I'm talking about. On the model in the game you can see the entrance is a darker color than the rest of the wall and slopes inwards, you can see it on the thumbnail as well. That was designed in the early 70's to facilitate tours entering and exiting the complex and was not part of the original structure, so I'm not completely lying!😆

All Irish history really. I started on RU-vid with a channel called The Irish Nation Lives covering the events of the War of Independence and the Emergency but those videos take a long time to make and life got in the way for a while! I'd love to go back to that someday. I do plan to look at Ireland HOI4 and Kaiserreich at some stage.

I think it's Shieldwall or something like that, adds population. If I do another campaign as Dublin I'd try it out.

I don't call it anything, don't have a reason to. If I'm talking about Ireland I say Ireland, if I'm taking about Britain I say Britain. The argument that "it's a geographical region so it needs to be called something and British Isles is most suitable" leads to people saying "Ireland is part of the British Isles so Ireland is British" (this was used only a few years ago as a defense of why British journalists keep calling Irish actors and sports people British). At this time period the Annals of Ulster described Ivar the Boneless on his death as "King of the Norsemen of all Ireland and Britain". The Irish have never had a reason to refer to the region in a geographical sense (other than as "these islands" in the Good Friday agreement)

The same thing I call the geographic area consisting of England and Northern France. Or England and Norway. Or Ireland and Iceland. I call it two separate countries with two separate peoples within the continent of Europe.

This seems incredibly petty. Britain is part of Europe, we wouldn’t claim not to be European because we are no longer part of a customs union. The isles were traditionally known as the British Isles. Political ideology and hate overtaking common sense in these comments.

Great to hear! At the start of the next video I'm planning to look briefly at St. Columba and some of the churches connected to him which feature in the game. If there is anything specific you'd like to see covered let me know or I'll just rant about anything that takes my interest!
