A true triple threat...singer, dancer and actress plus she could play the piano and a song writer. So much talent in one person. Ms. Irene Cara we who enjoyed your music and movies will always remember your name. Thank you for lighting up our skies with your incredible talent.
see... this is someone who deserve the title celebrity... this is someone who deserve the title musician... this is someone who really hit peak and could do the art properly... this is what your kind used to call musician..... real one...
My husband and I were part of the back round for the number. I was so excited but I still can't see myself anywhere...I do see my late husband jumping up and down as the scenery comes down for the Fame number...ah well...15 mins. of almost fame. We were lucky to get an extra days work due to the postponement due to the attempt on Reagan's life.
I remember when her popularity declined in the late 80s I kept wondering where she was and when she would be back in the spotlight. Her talent, charm, and charisma were too big for conventional mainstream continuity. I hope she is singing with the angels now.
Irene Cara was a superstar. The early half of the 1980s belonged to Irene Cara. Whitney Houston and Madonna came along later, but Irene Cara's work STILL influences and inspires artists beyond her passing.
It was a matter of timing I think. She was so pure, seemingly. Kinda soft spoken. But just as she blew up, times changed. Suddenly you had to be edgy and a bit androgynous. Big personalities. Whereas she seemed very much like a theater kid. But what she did accomplish no one can take away from her.
I remember this Oscar night vivdly. I watched in awe as Miss Cara left a streak of indelible lightning across the sky. I guess it is a sign of growing older, but I do not believe we will ever see the like of this live performance again.
so beautiful! Irene as always did a tremendous job. All that singing and dancing and sounding lovely. She should've had the career of Diana Ross and Donna Summer, her predecessors. She was them in a younger version. But her Mary Magadalene in the epic Jesus Christ Superstar anniversary tour with the original Jesus and Judas is still being talked about. I'd love to see this Oscars clip in a clearer version, but it's clear enough to see the beauty and raw talent of Cara, so it'll do. Thanks for posting!
I think once Whitney Houston came along, women like Irene were pushed aside and she sued her record company and they blacklisted her for it... Sad, she really seemed nice.
@@beyourself2444 Irene Cara also did a ballad for the 1990 movie China Cry, a movie that criticized the brutality of the Chinese Communist Party. Hollywood's been chummy with communists since the 1930s so that probably pissed them off too. Irene Cara's mother fled communism in Cuba so she was probaly sympathetic to the characters in China Cry.
For More Than 35yrs, Irene Has Been One Of "My Favorite 20 Female Singers Of All Time!"---That's Saying A Lot As I'm The "Epitome Of The Multi-Genre Music Lover."
What a great talent! I followed her career up until the blacklisting. She has a few classics under her belt (and the money that she had to fight to get back) so she still wins.

My friend, Blaine, wishes Irene Cara could have done more with her career after "Fame" and "Flashdance" because she is so talented. He watched the interview too and thought it was sad that a studio would do that to Irene. He's been studying Irene a lot recently. He thinks Irene was really cute when she was in her 20s. Blaine said Irene worked hard to become an actress when she was growing up as a kid and she should have been in more movies directed by people who are very talented and have skill like Alan Parker.
In some alternate universe they still have Irene Cara and she’s still one of the greatest artists in the world… getting the recognition she deserves in all dimensions… hopefully she is performing with Olivia Newton John.😊
A LITTLE POWERHOUSE. SUPERIOR VOICE. YOU DON'T SEE THIS GREATNESS TODAY BY ANY ONE. I MISS THESE DAYS OF BEAUTIFUL DISCO MUSIC. DANCE MUSIC. WHEN EVERY RACE DANCED TOGETHER SIDE BY SIDE WITH A SMILE LOVING THE DISCO CLUB AND MUSIC. BEAUTIFUL TIMES.
Sad to hear of her passing, left too soon, wonder about her, what ever became of her , didn't even hear her music on oldies radios. Think sadly "fame" can be hard to get and keep.
What are you gonna say? Has anyone seen an Oscar performance like this. She should have gotten an Emmy. Unbelievable talent. Crushing talent. Never seen anything like it. If you want the standard young ones you have it. Now meet that standard. Micheal Gore and Co-great songs both of them. On my own featured at the 2023 SAG awards. Cara. She was it.
Irene was cheated out of her royalties and percentage shares from her recordings and movies. She sued - and WON - but those people blacklisted her in Hollywood. Really sad.
They should name a street after her in the Bronx. She was black listed because she sued her record company for stealing her money and won the case against them. They didn't want to pay her for her hit songs and her songwritting, "flashdance"(what a feeling). They didn't like it that she won the lawsuit and blacklisted her. She went to another company and they shelfed her records and didn't promote her music, because of the blacklist. The same thing Kanye is talking about now. The same thing Michael Jackon said. The same thing Prince said. The same thing that went on then, is happening now. That's why she wasn't bigger. How could they do that to "My sweet Coco". She was my heart👍😘💕 RIP❤️
How many times I sang this song as a young girl to the album…I loved it and wanted to be on stage just like Irene Cara. I can’t believe that she’s gone so soon. RIP 🙏🏼😢💔
I loved Irene Cara…she was beautiful, talented and a superstar! She had more talent in her little finger than many other bigger stars..RaiP darling sweet Irene❤️
