"Irene Of Boston" was a sailing ship built in 1914 in Cornwall, with a history of crossing the seas of the world, until when, one hundred years later, it ended up as a bunch of timber stranded along the beach of Pozzallo, the port of southeastern Sicily, facing the open Mediterranean Sea. Through this music, Irene overcomes the physical limits of the wear of time and embraces the wind that always pushes us to go “a little further". It is a journey; a metaphor for the human experience which leaps beyond the islands, the customary projects, set routes and conventional ways.
In my imagination, the wood and brass of the wreck are transformed into the instruments of a symphony orchestra, and through this metamorphosis the ship overcomes the wear of time, waking up from a long sleep to tell the story, thanks to the magic of sound, of its adventures and the meeting with Corto Maltese the sailor of the celebrated comic books created by Hugo Pratt.
Metamorphosis
Out of nowhere, slowly, in an evanescent and ethereal dimension, Bouche Dorée materializes with her soft magic. In a dance with sensual movements, she leads us immediately away towards the seas of the East.
With sails unfurled and wind in the stern, Corto Maltese is traveling towards a new adventure.
Seemingly driven by a flow that his instincts decide to follow, pushed by a series of coincidences and inexplicable sensations, he often feels compelled to change course, until one day, lost and unconscious, he lands in Sicily.
On a solitary beach, he comes across the wreck of a sailing ship with which he begins a dreamlike conversation. The ship’s name is "Irene of Boston". Irene slowly morphs into a beautiful woman with whom Corto is able to speak and even confide in: it is a dream in which they appear to be brushing and touching each other. As the conversation continues, the memories of his past adventures cause Corto to regain consciousness.
The spell is broken by the madman Rasputin, who violently and grotesquely causes Corto to go back to his basic nature of the wandering sailor without a safe harbor to dock in, and that of the restless man in constant search of a new adventure, but also of the man who is free and unattached.
Irene, on the other hand, is experiencing a moment of deep introspection, and she immerses herself into the abyss of her most distant memories, in a fluid and almost amniotic atmosphere, realizing that she is nothing but a pile of rotten wooden boards lying on the seashore.
In a moment of great catharsis and awareness, the magic reappears. That which helps us to feel different: beings in constant motion and mutation. It is a cry for liberation and elevation. It is the overcoming of reality to go beyond. The sensory flow develops into an almost tribal ritual as it becomes apparent there is no end, but rather another passage, a change, with the awareness that there is always another possibility to live and recount a new story.
