The first flight of the Iris at this year's LDRS was a 2 stage with 9 Cesaroni I540 hammers in the booster staging via radio control to a 7600 ns M3000 white which inadvertently turned out to be closer to an M5000. Main deployment was also by RC although 2 altimeters were along for backup. The Triplefire RC board is available from Transolve.

You can't beat that first stage recovery. It landed in the middle of the rocket guys that launched it, practically in their laps! They didn't have to walk anywhere to get it! Best I've ever seen! Namaste.

That second stage burn was a pretty awesome sight. Why was the first stage so short though?
@skyking6989
@skyking6989 3 года назад
High thrust rockets burn for a very short time vs low thrust which burn much longer.
@tylerswhorkshoppe8799
@tylerswhorkshoppe8799 8 месяцев назад
High power rocket guy here, skyking is right... I'll add that sometimes it's just personal preference if you like punchy/short over lazy/long burn profiles for a given volume of motor casing to work with. Another factor of preference might be needing to achieve high enough speed for the fins to take effect before the launch rail is cleared.. you'll see the need for more punchy motors when the thrust/weight ratio will be lower due to the rocket being heavy for the given motor casing size. Propellent formula is partly to blame for propellent burn times (ratio of oxidizers) and also the inside geometry of the propellent (hollow core (fast) vs. crescent core (slow) vs. endburner(slow)). So... gotta be mindful of the slow burners because the rocket might not go fast enough for fins to work, or it might arc over too much.... many factors. Hope that helps!

Yes, rear ejection, barometric altimeter, ejection charges were removed from the I540s.
@vahpr
@vahpr 11 лет назад
No. The altimeters fired the apogee charges (I fired the motor and main chute). The apogee charges were wired for RC deploy in case the flight went south off the tower, as happened on a subsequent flight but for a nominal flight altimeters handle apogee.

It's so unbelievable how stable you got the IRIS to fly... so little rotation.. The best thing imo is the camera on the booster filming it's on discharge as well as the second stage of the IRIS ignite! And, oh yeah, btw the sound is just stunning! Keep on shooting and filming, pls.

The booster stage is clearly a cluster of smaller motors, which I guess are the Cesaroni I540s. But what was the second stage engine? Apparently, it was an M3000 (officially). Are those standard M motors according to the NAR specifications? To what does the 7600 ns refer? ns usually stands for 'nano-seconds' or billionths of a second. So 7600 ns would be 7.6 micro-seconds. Of what? I'd like to understand that 2nd stage.
@vahpr
@vahpr 6 лет назад
ns=Newton Second, the measure of a motor's impulse. The model rocket impulse chart designates letters A, B, C, etc where each successive letter denotes double the impulse range of the prior, thus an M motor (5,200-10,400 ns) is 1,000 times larger than a C motor (5-10ns). So a 7600 is in the middle of the M range and produces about 1,700 pounds of thrust. My motor was designed for a 2.5 second burn time, so 7600/2.5=3000, or an average thrust of about 650 pounds. It ain't rocket science, oh wait - it is :)
