We are- a family of four,
Mum- Annie,
Dad-Bruce
Two children Elsie and Betsy
One dog - Doug
and we decided to trade our busy life as home and business owners to chase the dream we’ve harboured for 10years.
How did we get here
After years of saying one day, we finally realised that these opportunities don’t just land in your lap and if we seriously wanted to make a difference to the Earth then we were going to have to stop talking about it and do it!
We sold all our stuff, got rid of the mortgage, sold our camper conversion business and landed in a dream come true. After traveling in our van we settled here in the west of Ireland. A place that has always been special to us. Annie is half Irish and since we met 12 years ago and she took me to meet her family i fell in love with Ireland too.
Now we’ve made this dream a reality there is no stopping us! our plan is to work hard, meet new people and learn new skills that will guide us on our journey of permaculture and creating a way of life that sings to us. One where we aren’t bound to the banks, working every hour and outsourcing all of our needs. A simple way of life, with connection to ourselves, each other, the earth and our community.

We’re late to the Off Grid Bruce party, having only discovered your account in the last month. We’re currently binge watching from when you first started looking for land (and have got as far as this video)… so about a year behind! We don’t have a tv licence or Netflix, but no need to when we have content like this to enjoy! You’re living our dream and such an inspiration. We’re learning so much💚🌱

Thanks for your home tour. Have you considered a spiral staircase at all? Love your ideas for the kids floor and the greenhouse especially. Best of luck with all of your plans - being resourceful and patient will make it happen in time. As my parents said when they built our home 'if it doesn't get done in the first 5 year plan, then it'll happen in the next one'.

Hello Bruce and family, watched all your previous videos and haven't posted a comment before. A belated happy new year and a very warm welcome to Ireland. Your "dreams" as you call them are beautiful in their simplicity and the aspirations of what you want to achieve are to be highly commended in a world gone mad with how big and posh one's home is!! I'll take your and your family's attitude to what's really important any day of the week!! Keep up the good work.

I’ve just been building a “rough” temporary staircase today…. Greenhouse attached to the house will work well - small woodburner in the greenhouse would help if you want to bring plants forward all year round! I’m a DEA (Domestic Energy Assesor) and you dramatically reduce heat loss by making a wall a sheltered wall…

I've always liked the idea too but you'll need to consider the extra humidity created in there if it opens into the house to avoid black mould which can be a serious issue especially in Ireland's wet wet weather. I guess well placed or designed ventilation would prevent issues... I'm following your journey with great interest, thanks for sharing! Looking forward to seeing you develop the place.

Hubby and I once had a dream of living like you and your family, we even had a “fixer upper” property chosen. Unfortunately finances came into it, and we just couldn’t find a way to purchase it. Hello from the West Wind.. 😉 Great to hear and see your plans Bruce. OK you asked so here is my twopence worth.. I think a u- shaped or spiral staircase will be too cramped for that corner which is not much more than 4 feet wide. Plus it would be impractical for moving mattresses/furniture etc. Since you are planning an A frame apex roof extension to the West I'd wait to incorporate your permanent stairs into that build. You would only need an L shape starting from North West wall and turning towards the midline to get your headroom entering upstairs. In the meantime I'd use a practical semi permanent solution such as a climbing wall on the side of the chimney breast. (the girls just might approve :) For yourselves, other adults and for stuff I'd incorporate an adequately sized Stira etc into the middle area of one of the rooms which neatly folds away when not in use. Happy to sketch and discuss it all later. Keep it up.. It's going great!

Your house is amazing. You really have a nice building to work with. Someone commented about perhaps considering a spiral staircase. No, in my opinion we lived growing up with 2. 1 going to the 2nd floor which was terrible for getting furniture up there. Also, the pie shape stair treads often a person will slip and fall on stairs. The 2nd set went to the basement. These were not too bath as the ceiling height was much lower than on the 1st floor. You will be so happy living there for maybe the rest of your lives. Great idea about the greenhouse against your house. Good luck to you on your plans. You will get there.

Thanks. I have been playing with a few designs of staircase and I think I’m going to put an L shape winder which will be nicer and add a bit of storage too. It still won’t be great for getting furniture up but luckily one end of the upstairs has a door out onto the roof of one of the extensions

Agree totally about the inconvenience and frustration of spiral staircases. We took ours out after my daughter had injured herself for the 3rd time falling down it. Furniture had to be flat packed and taken up one piece at a time.

I enjoy watch a channel Escaoing the Matrix for good. Gary has some great ideas such as using wood burning stove and inserting breathing holes between rooms to circulate heat. I have a stove fan and it made a huge difference to heat convection with in the room. The south facing conservator is one of the best ideas and relative cheap with second hand windows and an insulated claded roof. Second hand insulated cladding might be a good addition to insulated the outer walls. The next few years insulation is going to come a big factory as fuel prices increase.your on a wonderful journey and I’m sure it will be hard at times.

This was one of those vlogs that I was waiting for but did not want to as, so glad you did it. You really have your work cut out, as most of us do when we take on a restoration. I see someone has suggested a spiral staircase, they are good space savers but they do not agree with every ones taste or mobility needs. Would there be enough headroom in the gable extension you will build to put a staircase in, would that work with your upstairs layout? As you did this vlog partly in response to requests from followers, I feel less hesitation now in suggesting a wider land tour of the land in the spring or summer with your longer term plans, this would be of interest.
@OffGridBruce
@OffGridBruce 2 года назад
I will definitely be doing a land tour at some point. Having a lot of time observing this year to be able to plan properly. I don’t mind a spiral and apparently there was one there before we bought the place but they said it was a bit of a death trap. If the stairs were in the gable end it would mean one of the kids rooms would have the stair entrance in it so not ideal. Appreciating peoples ideas right now though
@lazycarper7925
@lazycarper7925 2 года назад
i dont know the plumbing layout, but a cylinder and water tank in roof space above running of the stove or get a boiler jacket for the stove if its not already a boiler stove, to feed the tank would give you the hot water and gravity feed for the cold in the cold taps in the house, if your a spring fed water system you just need some sort of simple pump system for the cold to the header tank in the roof space, and some pumps will turn on when you draw water so will only fill the tank when needed/used some water, i would feed it all of a rainwater harvest from the gutters,, i know you must know all this, nice home good luck

There is another RU-vid person called roaming rosie. She bought a place in Sweden. I love her show. She lives alone and does everything herself with no car.

Hi Bruce, I hope you don't mind me asking, how much did the property cost and how many acres came with it? We are hoping to find something similar in the next few years but at the minute its so hard to find anything that comes close

Wow it needs a lot of work but could be a home for life for someone, is it stone or block built or maybe mass concrete as us my farm house from 1930s , actually how old is it, spiral staircase for that tight space ,iam sure someone local could make one for ya ,maybe my friend in fermoy could !

It’s block with stone cladding. A few people have said spiral staircase. There was one there before we bought the place but had been removed by the previous owners. I have to do the roof and floors before getting making a staircase. Thanks for the offer of help :)

Hi Bruce ..great potential in that house... The only thing about the Stairs in the room where the Stove is, is a major loss of heat, as it mostly goes upstairs.. Unless you cover it and put a door ..Good to be Young n Living the Dream.. I'm 77 in a couple of months n I have a Double decker bus to convert.+ I bought a 42 x 10 ft. Bare Bare hull n superstructure ..don't know what I'll be doing in my spare time ... 🤔 😃

If you can I'd stay within regulations when making the staircase, they exist so someone doesn't break their neck. The servants' stairs in old houses were notorious. One v important thing is no surprises (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-seieuz__B_g.html) Also not having crazy narrow winders. From memory I think about 200 mm rise to a 220mm run is sharpest gradiant that's safe and also aim for 220mm width at the mid point of a winder step. I haven't actually built a stairs btw, just planned one which I'm hoping to do this year! 😁
@OffGridBruce
@OffGridBruce 2 года назад
It’s so tricky trying to get the balance right you know? We won’t be using the upstairs really so don’t want to take away too much space from the downstairs. I’m sure the right thing will come up once I have redone the floors

SO SORRY to say this but most of your house tour the camera was focused on you, while speaking. Other times you seemed to focus on small details of one corner or section of your home. Kinda impossible to get a feel for the layout/floorplan, let alone the overall interior design. I was so looking forward to it 😢 Your exterior tour was much better as you did focus on the 3 add ons. Again, sorry to be critical but it really left me wanting more, not able to get a perspective of your wonderful home. It is quite gorgeous IMO. 💗

To be honest, I’d pull the house down and start from scratch. It’s poorly built, hasn’t been maintained, looks like there’s been lots of amateur tack-ons, and would just be a big black hole that’s money would just disappear in.

Thanks for the input. That’s definitely not an option for various reasons so have to work with what we have. It’s stood so far so I’m sure it will lay the rest of my life. I can only spend what I have and will have to live with the rest. I’m happy as is so anything done is a bonus :)

We're both loving your videos, but when you're showing us around your house or the land, or anywhere for that matter, would it be possible to point the camera at what you're trying to show us around rather than your face? I would have thought it would be easier to point the camera at say the living room and then talk behind the camera rather than in front of it. We love your pieces to camera, but sometimes it gets in the way of what you're trying to show.
@OffGridBruce

That’s a fair point especially in this video. I basically filmed myself at each point of the house to get narration and then filmed some b roll. If I was to do it again I’d have no face and narrate it in the edit. I may do another one before I get too far with the inside of the house
