Inside the eye of the storm! The Irish fans sing the Fields of Athenry, after Spain score sending us out of the tournament. Makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.
I remember watching this game in Valencia, my home town, and this song kept stucked in my mind, as it showed so much courage and pride in a clear defeat. The day after Spain won the Euro 2012, I went with some schoolmates to Donaghmede, Dublin, to learn English. Once there, in the first week of classes, our teachers taught us what this song meant and their lyrics. Since then, each time I hear it and each time I watch irish people chanting it, I can’t manage to not get emotional. Some years later, when Celtic came to play against Valencia for the Europa League eightfinals, I went to the stadium’s WC during the halftime, where I saw myself surrounded by lots of Irish fans. The deep joy I felt when I started the chant (I saw the chance of my life), and my valencian friends were looking at the massive thing it became, is one of the most unexplainable feelings I ever felt! Long live Ireland!! 💚
I'm from marbella....ur rite.....spanish galicia n another region is part of the 8 celtic nations.....they even play bagpipes in couple regions in spain.....this song lyrics is unbelievably sad as fk.....omg, the pride of the irish being slaves by oliver Cromwell n king James ii n the potato famine n the irish being colonized n forcefully sent all over the world is incredible the strength of these fighting peoples!!! I've never seen such a strong tougher peoples there pride n fighting spirit is unbelievable.....gracia....Irlande!!! Viva san Patricios battalion......viva marbella....viva irlande!!!
This is absolutely beautiful, this comment made me tear up, this song is nearly more important than our national anthem and has a huge history in irish sport and history, thank you for sharing I’m glad you got to experience this
Considering the history of ireland, the suffering of its people and the meaning of this song this is truly a fucking great moment. Greetings with shivers from Germany.
There's 4 kinds of irish songs: 1. I met a bonnie fair lass and she was fair and bonnie 2. We fight the British 3. I was drunk af and it was awesome 4. I left Ireland and miss it dearly
Around 20.000 Irish excited fans are singing although Spain Scorer 4 goal. Wow! It impressed my deep to see how devoted these fans are!!! I am doubting that there there is any football team in the world who has fans which are singing so cheerful and excited although their favourite is so much outclassed sporty! Wow!!!
I'm from Spain and I was so happy to see the score of 4:0 on the table. However, when those dear fellows from Ireland started to sing I realized what football really means!!! Thank you Boys in Green for giving me the opportunity to share this great spirit with you!! My heart belongs to Ireland and its outstanding fans!!
+Iberia01 Irish people would be still singing if it was another sport besides football. The atmosphere was the same at the rugby world cup i know because i was part of it.Irish people are very patriotic and will support our teams in no matter what sport.
3 years and I still get the shivers. I want this played at my funeral.. lads be banging on my coffin spilling beer on the alter. Father jack giving the sermon
I'm half Irish and half Spanish, so I was confused as to which team I should support, but Fields of Athenry convinced me to root for Ireland! Go on lads! Celtic brothers, Spain and Ireland! 🇪🇸🇮🇪
One of most beautiful moments in football history!!!!, a moment of Honor, pride and respect!!! Thank to all irish fans from Mexico to Ireland GRACIAS AMIGOS!
It created telly history as commentators were enraptured by this sheer magnificence hence they hushed as the fans belted out this most uplifting rendition of an all-encompassing Irish history song. Never ceases to inspire me! Eirinn Go Beach!
I remember watching this game in Spain, the Spanish commentators were amazed by the Irish crowd still singing like this even though they were losing 4-0 (I think) They even said to get goosebumps. Spain went on to win it but this group stage game still one of the best memories of that tournament. This is how we should all celebrate football and life!
As an Englishman who has lived in Ireland for 18 years(getting used to it) it makes me proud to know my son's are brought up as Irishmen(my wife's Irish) and this song moves me.
@CELTIC WARRIOR thank you very much in this time of shutting ourselves away your msg was a shot in the arm you are a true brother and it's guys like you that made and sustained the legend that is Jadotville . Keep the faith brother
@@kengrimes1012 yes. They Congo. One of my family I was there. Got no reconation. And called cowards. Because they UN. Had hid a secret. I blame. Donor cruise o brien. A irishman for it all
This song was first sang as an anthem by the Glasgow Celtic fans around 1990 ..Pete St John who wrote this song acknowledged the Celtic fans by presenting Celtic Football Club with the original words and actually performed it at Celtic Park to thank the Glasgow Irish. RIP Pete St John.
I'm a french canadian. I love the Irish culture. I heard that my grandmother as her own grandmother coming from Ireland. Now I wish to travel in this fabulous country
From a protestant Northern Ireland supporter there is something about this song that makes it one of the most powerful in the world and hopefully both countries qualify for many tournaments to come as shown in the euros they put their differences aside and we're easily both highlights of the tournament.
Joe Mckeogh that was then. This is now. You aren’t oppressed Joe. And the lad you are responding to on RU-vid definitely didn’t oppress you. He didn’t choose to be born Protestant no more than you choose to be catholic. History is important, you don’t have to forget. But you should forgive.
@@garyodriscoll7988 Well both can make the choice of who they want to be it's really simple. Just say to yourself " I don't believe that a Galactic overlord can see everything and had a magical carpenter son, because there is no evidence of any God existing". Then you become human.
@@TheKingkeano What are you talking about? Both Catholic and protestants believe in God. You are free to push your atheism beliefs on me, and I am free to laugh at you. Christianity teaches good moral values, that make you act humane. Will I be shell shocked when I die to find out there is no God? No. But the christian values are a fine template to live a virtuous life. They were good enough for my ancestors, and they are good enough for me, unless of course something better comes along.
I'm Welsh & old enough to remember the old Cardiff Arms Park crowd so I'm well used to hearing incredible singing from sports crowds but I had proper goose bumps listening to this! You have to love the passion & pride of the Irish. Thanks for the upload Lynda.
This is the most memorable moment of 2012, im not irish but i still remember this scene, it was the end of the game 5 or 6 minutes, and commentator was silenced for the whole time and at the end said man of the match belongs to these fans, its my memory from 2012, well done lads i still got chills and goosebumps
@Old Monty Yes you are clearly a genius. Give yourself a pat on the back for me. I'm not going to get in a seemingly pointless back and forth. You can read about what I wrote if you want to learn more, because there's much more context to the situation than what you are saying. Thank you for the enlightening discussion and goodnight, or adios as they say in Spain.
I remember this night. It was magic. I only watched it over the TV, but I really hope I will one time experience something like this myself. This is amazing... makes me cry.
There's just one moment in football history that immediately makes me cry, just when I see the title of a video that makes us experience these moments again again. As a German Schalke supporter who went through many valleys of darkness with his team this is the most memorable football moment of my life. Not that I was at the final in Milan when we won the UEFA Cup in 97 or losing the championship by just 4 minutes.... THIS is it. This is why we love to suffer and this is why we love to celebrate. This is football! God bless the Irish supporters!
My favourite song of all time, my dad sang it all the time to my mother, who is from co mayo, I wouldn't mind but my dad's name was Griffiths (Wales). He loved Ireland. God bless you dad. ❤❤❤
Low lie the Fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly. Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.
Poor Michael - transported for stealing a bag of corn. So did one of my ancestors. Nicked a bag of barley and was sent to Maryland on the King's Seven Year Ticket.
Then which is your favourite? This magnificent Irish support...or...... This magnificent Scottish support.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KcxHrj66Dj0.html I love them both equally and I am Welsh raised in England!!!!
This just goes to show everyone what it means to support your team. You pay the money for flights and match tickets, you sit there with your fellow Irishmen and Irishwomen and when you're getting your ass handed to you, what do you do? You belt out one of the best songs about your country that was ever written. Singing in the process of being defeated in an auld game of soccer. Why? FUR DA CRAIC LAD!!!! In my opinion, this needs to happen again. At this year's Euros, with The Notorious, or even the Olympic games. There is something about Irish sporting fans like this that needs to be seen more often.
Yo estuve en ese partido y no he podido olvidar esa canción , se me siguen poniendo los pelos de punta cada vez que la escucho ..... nosotros les goleamos en el campo pero ellos nos golearon en la grada
I have Irish family connections but consider myself a Brit. As a Brit I can say anyone with a soul, of any nationality couldn't fail to be moved by such a wonderful rendition of a fine old song by those Irish fans. Special moment.
I still cry every time I watch this. It's the most compelling sports fandom event I can think of. If you ever need to explain to someone why you care about sports, show them this.
6 years ago already does not feel like that at all!! Me and a lot few of my friends were sitting in a section with a few Spanish fans us Irish were belting it out and there was tears from the Spanish fans they couldn't believe the passion we had for our country at 4-0 down unbelievable and a great memory to have for the rest of my life
Brilliant.....love the Irish., been over a few times now, love the people, love the countryside. love the Guinness..such a warm and welcoming people... peace be with you xx
Wow ! Am a German Australian. Not into football in any big way and have never seen this before. Absolutely fantastic ! That so many fans know this wonderful song and can sing it so fully and for so long. Congratulations to you all.
Studied in Ireland when I was 15, great life experience, Irish fan ever since. Eire will be missed along with its fans, the best in the world on this next world cup!
Beautiful. I actually wouldnt mind listening to 10s of 1000s of Irish fans around me singing Fields over and over throughout a game. All the best Eire! 🇮🇪
Irish people are amazing. I have afew friends that moved to the states, and every summer when school is out they go back to Ireland. I went with them for 3 summers because our families became so close. I have to say it's just a fun vibe all around in Ireland. I have Irish roots, indian and german roots. I want to someday track my Irish family down on my dads side. Cant wait for this summer!
Once when my dad was in thailand he went to a pub with a few friends and they ended up making friends with some Aussie guys. There was about 12 of them, half Aussies and half Irish walking down the street belting this at the top of their lungs. Us Irish and Aussies always seem to band together wherever we go haha. Love you Aussies. Ireland and Australia brothers forever 🇨🇮🇦🇺❤️
Yes. There is a memorial to the San Patricio Batallion in the Plaza of San Jacinto, Mexico city. Every year, September 12, there's a ceremony and the name of every Irish fallen soldier is called.
My brother and I were there for this. It was simply amazing. I'll never forget it, thanks for the video! PS - As cool as this was, the way the Spanish fans and Irish fans interacted together on the trams out of Gdansk were great too...so much respect. And the Irish and Polish people fell in love with each other in that tournament too.
allezrapid im not irish but i still remember this scene, it was the end of the game 5 or 6 minutes, and commentator was silenced for the whole time and at the end said man of the match belongs to these fans, its my memory from 2012, well done lads
I don't know why but sometimes I feel like an Irish, never even met any irish people before, but then I just found myself listening fields of athenry :D best regards from Turkey :)
Wow my dad was a paddy, brought tears to my eyes I've never seen anything like this, looking at irish songs and this came up. I'm English and proud but always love the irish. So proud of you guys.
@@kierandaniels4035 I'd like to think we Irish are not so easily offended. If a lad born in England wants to call his own dear Father a paddy, he can do so. Be offended somewhere else.
Remember watching this live from New Zealand and just being captivated listening to it. 4-0 down, the teams going home and all that you can hear is a bunch of mad football fans singing. one of the great sporting moments for me. This kinda passion just cant be bought or taken for granted. Love it.
Scott Hunt Well here's hoping. Distinct possibility if we win or pool. If not it will likely by the quarters and you didn't steal anything. We played well but you showed why you are and always will be the greatest rugby nation on earth. We'll beat you some day though we're getting closer and closer
It was incredible. To watch my beloved All Blacks take the French to the cleaners like that, with the Irish singing in the background was amazing. Wish the Irish all the best, hope to see you at Twickenham in two weeks.
@@niallyshere short answer: "The Fields of Athenry" represents Irish unity, even in the most dire of circumstances. Longer answer: The song tells of a man who was arrested and exiled for trying to steal food for his starving children. (During the famon, the Colonial British Army stole what little food the Irish did have, and punished the Irish severely for trying to steal it back.) The Irish were starved to death, executed and exiled in great numbers. Millions emigrated to survive. Hence why it was "so lonely round the fields of Athernry". But nomatter what, the Irish stick together. Even through The Troubles! Even with a partition dividing the island! But that's another story. #think32
As our dear Emerald Isle is on lockdown, we all need to forge this unity and solidarity. Stand together and create the path to better times, one love, one country united. Let's do it lads, love and hugs to all the countries deeply affected by this virus and Lord rest those taken by this disease, we will rise again.
