Lane Frost died in a competition, when the bull charged him breaking a rib that punctured his heart. He was considered to be one of the greatest bull riders to ever live and died at only 25 years of age. Lane is one of the main reasons they wear those protective vests now.

I went to college with a guy that was a bull rider. I asked him exactly what was the motivation of jumping onto the back of one ton of pissed off cow. His response was "I don't know, it's fun".

True story from western Canada (we have the same rodeos up here as well. It's not just an American thing, although they have the luxury of doing it darned near all year round). Many years ago I was the boss on a construction site. One day during lunch break we were all gathered together and started talking about some of the more dangerous things we had done in our lives. One of the young fellows told us that he was a bull rider in every rodeo he could get to. I told him that the scariest thing I had ever done was to jump out of an airplane. The young bull rider speaks up and literally said to me: "Jumped out of an airplane? You're crazy... you could get hurt doing that!" 🤣

"Is he holding on?" Well yes and no. The rope that the rider holds onto has rosin on it to make it sticky so their gloves can stick to it better and allow them to maintain better grip. When a rider comes off at an odd angle, or they wrap the rope around the glove really tightly they can get stuck when thrown. The fighters, those guys running around the bull are trying to distract the bull and dislodge the riders hand from the rope. Their job is to protect the rider even if it means putting themselves in danger.

They also have “Cowboy Poker” where 4 guys sit around a table and they turn a bull loose. Last man sitting at the table wins!

There was a very famous bull, Bodacious that had to be retired because he was just too damn dangerous. Bernie Taupin, Elton Johns lyricist is a fanatic bull riding fan, and owned a share in Little Yellow Jacket, one of the most fearsome bulls in the business. He was PBR bull of the year in 2003. You should watch some bulldogging competitions! Yeehaw! Love from Texas. Eight seconds is it!

They have to stay on for 8 seconds for it to qualify as a ride. Just good old fashioned American fun.

OK, this is a crazy sport, but you have to watch an entire competition (bull riding event from start to finish). These are amazing athletes (bulls, riders, and clowns-they are the ones who jump in to save the riders who get in trouble). I live on the east end of Long Island, about 2 hours east of New York City and try to make it a point to hop on a train and head into Madison Square Garden in NYC to attend the PBR events. For my 60th birthday, my children bought me an opportunity to go down in the ring to watch it from ground level (PBR sets up a round raised platform in front of where the the bull and rider get released and a few people can sit under the platform and watch the competition unfold right in front of you). Ummmmm, you can feel the bull’s power through your feet and butt. That’s as close as I ever want to be - it is almost overwhelming. I give them all a huge amount of credit for their skill and toughness. By the way, the riders try to select the most notorious bulls since their score is not only determined by surviving the ride for the full duration, but also on the bull’s performance and the rider’s style. Don’t just focus on the wrecks! That’s like going to to a car race and only paying attention to the collisions-there’s a whole lot more to appreciate.

My uncle lives next to the rodeo, I can watch it from his back yard. That said you ask why americans do such a thing. I ask you why do men climb Mountains, some say to get to the other side, some say for the challenge. Who really knows but the man.

I was a RCA card holder for 4 years. Turquoise, Southern, and Great Lakes circuits. Broke bones, pulled more muscles and beat up beyond belief. Qualified the first go-around, broke my foot and rode the next with a cast on my right foot. I didn't cover. Now I'm 67 and I feel it. Great times and good friends.

Hey Adam, i ride bulls as well as play hockey (i'm from canada so the two are pretty big here) but i wanted a video like this for awhile!! In the sport of bull riding we have a saying: it's not if you get hurt its when and how bad! Also i'll point some things out for the vid, - at 3:10 that's Pistol Robinson and he broke both his legs in that wreck - at 4:04 Brent Thurman died from that wreck, the bull stepped on his head. He's one of three cowboys that have died riding bulls professionally - at 5:37 thats "bull riding" in mexico, its different that bull riding in Canada and America - at 5:49 thats Zeb Lanham at the Calgary Stampede (the same city as the Calgary Flames!) they didn't show the full wreck but he got threw about 15 feet in the air - for your question at 9:10, they're trying to free his hand. We call that getting hung up, your hand gets stuck in your rope and when you're flopping around its hard to get it out hopefully the video intrigued your interest in the sport;)

😆 Oh it IS crazy, that's why we love it! Aim is to stay on for 8 seconds, which is harder than it sounds, as you can see. If you can you get scored based on a few factors but mostly on making it look easy. While official records date it back to Old Mexico a similar event known as bull leaping started in Minos, home of the pre-Greek civilization of the Minoans and is believed to have been the inspiration for the legend of the Minotaur. As dangerous as it looks there have been very few deaths and they're usually not in the professional circuit usually the lower ones where precautions are lacking, but a lot of broken bones. The guys on the ground are called Bullfighters today but used to be called Rodeo Clowns. Their job is the most important and respected one and that's to keep the bull away from a rider when he dismounts or gets bucked off because that's like trying to dismount a Merry go Round that's out of control, never going to be a graceful landing. Frank Newsom is one of them and he's insane, I think he likes getting trampled because I've watched him be tossed a few meters in the air and come back for more. And his hat, gotta get the hat.

"How is this a sport?" Well, a Cowboy got bored breaking horses for saddle riding and decided to test himself. Found himself the biggest meanest bull in the herd, and tried to ride him. Other cowboys watched and decided it looked like fun.

I used to unprofessionally ride bulls when I was a young man... I'm in my 40's now and have already had spine surgery with more in the future... The goal is to ride for 8 sec.And not fall off.. They get judged based on how well they rode the bull... I have done this With broken bones and torn muscles.. This was a game that the old Mexican cowboys would do for fun and they would lay challenges to each other to see who could do it better... It all progressed from there... This is what Americans (not just the southern states) do for fun... It's as brutal as you think and A LOT more fun... Unlike Portuguese bull fighting these bulls are worth A LOT OF MONEY and treated like kings and NEVER killed.... Oh.... and they ONLY make money (highest score from judges) IF they win and it's usually not a huge amount either.... Man I miss those days.....

I grew up around Rodeo and country life, so it doesn't seem so crazy to me, and I'm a female. But, to watch u and your response to the sport made me laugh so hard I spit my coffee across the room...lmao...I guess u think Americans, or at least our Cowboys and Bull riders have lost their minds?... Ok Adam. Knowledge on bull riding. The goal is to stay on for 8 seconds and “look” like you are in control of yourself. What those guys are doing jumping on it trying to release the riders rope. The riders use a rope with something like sap to lock their grip at where they think the middle of the bulls spin to try and make the 8 seconds. The way that you become a bull rider is when you are young and you think about getting on a bull for the first time you take a handful of marbles and stick it in your mouth. Every time after that that you think about getting on a bull you spit out a marble and when you’ve completely lost your marbles then you are a bull rider. There are a number of deaths from bull riding probably the most famous of those is Lane Frost (movie “8 seconds” was made about him). You should go watch some wrecks from “Red Rock” the bull that killed Lane Frost. It’s an amazing sport and the thing I like most about it is that I can’t feel the pain of those choices.

You have to watch the PBR “bullfighters”. They are the guys who come in to save the riders. And the bulls actually compete for points.

Due to a life long infatuation with both bull riders and irishmen, I've never been quite so turned on...nor thought I'd laugh so hard at putting the two together. 😂

My brother was dating a girl whose family owned a ranch in MT. During family reunions they held a family rodeo. One of the kids about 8yo was doing similar thing, but on a horse, and was kicked by the horse after being thrown. As he got up everyone was asking him if he was ok. he kept a straight face and said i am good. My brother who does photography followed the kid as he wandered back behind some trailers, sat down, and grabbed where he had been kicked and started crying. Got a fantastic picture out of it. These guys all likely have similar stories starting out doing rodeo as a kid. It's a sport now but was what you had to do as a cowboy working on a ranch. One note, you might notice a second rope to the rear of the bull. it's pinching the bull's testicles to get it to buck like that. The Rodeo clowns will pull that rope loose to stop the bull bucking so they can get it out of the arena.

Though I was born in Virginia, and have many kinfolks in Virginia, I grew up in Lovell Wyoming, 45 minutes from Cody Wyoming, on a small farm along Sage Creek. Working for local ranchers and farmers was how I made my money to buy my clothes, motorcycles, snowmobile, 4X4 truck, and my car. Bullriding is a sport for the crazy brave who have been either born into bull riding, or, have decided to go into bull riding starting in elementary school with calf riding, by high school they are riding the "big boys." The average bucking rodeo bull weighs in at 1,500 pounds to 1800 pounds of muscle, attitude, and speed. The goal is to stay seated on the bull for the full ride... 8 seconds. Believe it or not, when the bull owners bring the trailer to the barns to load up the bulls, the bulls run to get into the trailers. The bulls actually enjoy going to the rodeos. A young rodeo bull, with DNA-verified parentage, can be worth as much as $100,000. If the bull has superstar bloodlines, the bull can be worth as much as $250,000. A proven bucking bull can be worth as much as $500,000. The majority of Professional Bull Riding salaries currently range between $26,500 (25th percentile) to $42,500 (75th percentile) with top earners (90th percentile) making $62,000 annually across the United States. Championship bull riders can earn as much as $92,500 with sponsors in one year. Bull riders who are injured early in the year are typically awarded only $16,000 for that year. Any time a bull rider climbs onto a bull, the rider has a 60% chance of breaking a bone, having a skull fracture, torn ligaments, and tendons. The typical bull rider sustains no less than two to three serious orthopedic injuries and at least two to four crush injuries in the course of each competition year. When the riders get their rigging hand stuck in the rigging belt, the rodeo safety crew is there to help free the rider from the angry, 1500 pounds to 1800 pounds of muscle, attitude, and speed bulls. What makes the bulls buck and angry is the bucking strap around the flanks of the bull, pulled tight to stimulate the bull to buck. One of my friends actually got into an accident while competing in this and was told he’d never walk again, but he’s the type who proves people wrong and to this day he walks perfectly fine and tells his story as an inspirational speaker!

A friend of mine was a rodeo clown to say he had a few screws lose is an understatement. Before the helments and vest were a thing there were alot more people getting hurt and sadly killed. One of the top riders to sadly lose his life is Lane Frost. The movie "8 Seconds" is a movie I would watch if I was you

The Professional Rodeo circuit is very real and a very serious sport. Just like all other, the best of the best compete, going from state to state until the winning qualifiers reach the Big event. A lot of money is to be earned if you win. A Cowboy pays out a lot of money to compete. Bull Riding is just one of many events. It should get more exposure for people to know and understand it. These Cowboys and Cowgirls deserve mad respect. My late father was All Around Cowboy for the State of Louisiana in the late 60’s. His career ended when he took a horn through his hip. A great bull rider is: short, strong upper body, and high pain tolerance. It is one hell of a talent. The real Hero’s are the Clowns. If not for them, there would be a lot more injuries/deaths.

Steer wrestling is cool too. The cowboy slides off the horse onto a steer and wrestles the steer down and ties three legs together. Good times!

Some of the bulls absolutely know it's a game. Bodacius was one of the best and learned a special move to crack a riders skull like an egg. He would take a victory lap around the arena, basking in the cheers of the audience before returning to the pen. The bulll on the ranch I work at is a big baby though, he comes up and wants you to scratch his head, but just a loving nudge, rubbing his head against you can knock you flying.

The riders hanging off the side of the bull have their gloves caught in the rigging. The riders being drug underneath got a boot caught in the rigging. The job of the guys on the ground is to distract the bull after the rider comes off so the rider can get to safety

Check out Bodacious, the deadliest bull ever ridden. He knew exactly how to get a rider off and make them pay a serious price. He had to be retired because of the threat to human life.

I grew up in Oklahoma just a few miles from world champion Lane ---- around the same time. (Can't think of his last name) oh Reba McEntire lived a few miles in the other direction, but she's a little older. Watch 8 seconds and it will give you an insight to this world. When I was in grade school, our principal was a bull rider and calf roper, also did bareback bronc riding. At recess we rode a barrel bull. 50 gallon drum strung from a tree limb pulled up and down by rowdy classmates. A half tire with 3 wooden legs to practice hog-tying for calf roping and a haybale with a plastic cow head stuck in it for calf roping. All we had to do was bring a rope and pigging string. One note on the McEntires, one of Reba's relatives was fastening a steel gate when a heifer kicked the gate of which he eventually died. That was my first knowledge of that family. That was big news in our little school as everyone was somehow related and the Mcs were a popular local ranching family. When you eat a steak or burger or bubble and squeak, or even drink milk just recall that people somewhere in the world withstood weather, hardship and dealing with big powerful and smelly animals to make that happen. Oh and smothering government regulations.

My grandson is a bronc rider and bull rider. He started when he was about 15. He is about 20 now and has been hurt numerous times but he loves doing it. It is exciting to watch live.

I love this, unlike bullfighting these guys can totally kick the ass of the rider. There are bulls more famous than riders. The rides score is half the riders performance and half the bulls. The riders want a bull that is crazy/athletic so it earns more points. Also those guys running around are known as bullfighters (rodeo clowns of yore). It's their sole job to protect the rider. They literally put their bodies between them and the bull (Frank Newsom & Cody Webster videos give you a look at their insane job).

When I was a kid, my grandfather took us to the Burwell Rodeo. When the bull riding came on, one of the bulls dumped his rider, gored a clown and then jumped the fences and ran up into the stands, sending people screaming and crashing the stands. We were right in his way and people were in our way to get out. but before the bull got to us, someone from the rodeo shot the bull and it slowed down, fell and finally died. His adrenalin is what kept him going. I never went to another rodeo.

If you think the bull riders have balls and are nuts you don’t know rodeo. The truly balls of steel and legit nuts are the clowns.. Those guys are out there bull after bull doing EVERYTHING they can to protect the bull rider. To me rodeo clowns are some of the bravest people on the planet and certified insane. The athletes are really the bulls. The bull rider is a recipient of the bulls anger, and the riders ability to withstand the violence of the ride. It takes a real tough man to play this sport, this is where they separate the men from the wannabe men.

Hubby's maternal grandfather was a rodeo cowboy. Had to give it up after being stomped by a bull and realizing that his reflexes were slowing down a bit.... he was 30. Truly a young man's sport.

My Dad used to be a bull rider. My grandma made him quit when a bull knocked him unconscious for 12 hours and broke his legs.

When my aunt was young, like in her 20s, she used to ride bulls like that. She was like 4’9”, and weighed about 89 lbs! My mom hated it!! We’re from Houston, Texas! One of my twins is named after a famous bull rider named Lane Frost.

The rules for bull riding is the cowboy gets on to the bull and when he's ready he nods his head and that's when the clock starts, the cowboy has to keep his free hand in the air the whole time and never touch the bull with it, he has to stay on for 8 seconds at which time the horn will blow and he can get off however he can. The ride is judged by giving up to 50 points for the bull by how hard he bucks and 50 points for the rider for how easy he makes it look. If he falls off away from his hand that he's holding on to the bull with he will probably get hung up, that's when those other guys on their feet are for the bullfighter his job is to get the cowboy 's hand free if he's hung up and to distract the bull from getting the cowboy.

I grew up in the Rockies, my father and I were both Amateur bull riders until I joined the Army after 9/11. Tough Sport.

One of the more well known deaths was that of the late great Lane Frost. They made a movie about it, aint bad. 8 seconds is the target time to stay on the bull. And of course they were bored think of what they had to do back in the idk, lets say as early as the 1700s. Though Deer Tail, Colorado has record of one of the first Rodeos in 1869.
