Actually, where I grew up in Québec, we had a local dish called "sauce et choux" (sauce and cabbage), It consisted of fries with gravy side by side with chopped raw cabbage. This was well before poutine made its appearance. It was a surprisingly tasty combination. However, in my most recent trip home after some 30 years absence, I was appalled to discover that no one seemed to know how to make it any more and were actually putting the gravy on the cabbage like a bastardised form of poutine, which is already an insult to the noble French Fry.

My guess is the poutine didn't have real cheese curds, and that's why it was so bland. If you refrigerate cheese curds, it changes their flavour permanently. In Quebec, curds are kept out on the counter at the depanneurs, at room temperature. Refrigerated cheese curds become bland and rubbery instead of soft and squeaky. The way the fries are cooked also matters a lot, since the gravy will turn fries to unpalatable mush unless the fries are cooked twice in very hot oil so that the outside is crispy and the inside is soft.

Cheese curds didn't look melted on the poutine :( Also, making caesars is an art form. You can't just make them willy nilly and expect them to be good. A good caesar is a national treasure.

@mymathmind
@mymathmind 2 года назад
@@NarrowZYX yeah… I’m Canadian 🇨🇦. Cheese curds definitely melt. On poutine the curds should look droopy but still squeak when you bite into them. When you fork into the poutine the cheese should stretch. The curds in the video look stiff as if they are cold 🤷‍♂️.

Love the guy with the black hair and goatee. He sounds exactly like someone from St. John’s, Newfoundland. I’m from Central Newfoundland but went to University in St. John’s and by the time I left, 4 years later, the accent had fully rubbed off on me. His accent is exactly like a “Townies” accent. Amazing how that part of Newfoundland retained the Irish accent, culture and words and phrases from the people who emigrated from Ireland and settled in St. John’s and surrounding areas. My accent (central NFLD) is influenced by England’s West Country. It’s almost exactly the same still to this day. I can read a great pirate book for “me kiddies” lol

I love their reactions but about poutine... Not that it's a bad thing. They can hate things. Like the no green, ya greens might be cool. Well.. just green onions because I can't picture any other vegetable in it. People are like "Oh, it's just fries with gravy and cheese curds," that's just a simple dish and I can make it at home anytime. But I feel like poutine from restaurants are better then homemade. The gravy and cheese are just more flavoured and they know how make gravy. Homemade is just so plain.

Poutine is made up of fresh cut pieces of thick skinned narrow potatoes and fresh curds that still have the spongy feel and a slightly sour taste. The potato bits are fried in a short oil pan or deep fried, immediately drained and immediately placed on the paper fenced plate to be smothered with the curds and beef drippings themselves heated near to scalding to be poured over the whole mess, hence the name

Rowntree was the originator of the Coffee Crisp. But in the UK, Rowntree was more known for it's Yorkie bar. Coffee Crisp was mainly a hit here in Canada. Nestle now owns Rowntree. Kit Kat is also a big Rowntree product , but don't by KKs in the US because they're made by Hershey down south! American chocolate and candy bars are sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup. HFCS is not allowed as sugar substitute here in Canada. Herr's chips are American made.
