I think I overestimate how preparations of certain foods are just culturally known. Like I don’t think I’ve ever thought of eating it straight from the can, cause for me it’s a given that it’s going to be fried.

I remember hearing horror stories of other kids growing up having to eat sandwiches of unfried spam on white bread with mayonnaise. It was rare, but it happened. Ugh.

Additionally, it's regional how it is prepared. We have Spam (or Kam or Klik or other regional variants) in Atlantic Canada, and my father's family always ate it sliced out of the can, never fried.

@@PlasmaStorm73-N5EVV Yes, I know the history of Spam 🙄. My comment was tongue-in-cheek, meant to be light-hearted. I know some people eat it as-is out of the can, but most cook it in some way to make it more palatable. By the '70s, it was rare that people ate it without cooking it in some way. There are people who flat out hate Spam because they their moms made the sandwiches with it straight out of the can. You can eat corned beef hash straight out of the can, too, but most people prefer to cook it.

Can I just point out that I love Ciara wearing a Pork Soda shirt for the SPAM video? Anyway, fried spam over rice is bomb. Eating spam out of the can is like eating cold hotdogs out of the package. Technically edible, but why would you do that to yourself?

I needed to comment on this episode! SPAM is a holdover from WWII meals. It's still really popular in Hawaii. Try crisping it up before eating it with fried rice or spam and eggs. The teriyaki flavor you tried featured a musubi, or spam sushi, which is a popular fast food in Hawaii- also can be made with a halfed hotdog.

It's made with pork shoulder. I have eaten regular Spam (and low sodium, because this stuff fried is bacon level salty) as a breakfast type meal, but it's like mush if you don't fry it. Slice it up, throw it in the frying pay for best result.

For Americans who were growing up during the Great Depression, SPAM was enough to reduce a person to tears because it was meat and it was cheap. Even now I still enjoy a SPAM sandwich rather frequently, and my parents AND grandparents didn't even grow up during the depression. Tastes like depression, but also hope for a better day in the future.

I made my peace with spam - it's a "utility food". If you buy the name brand now it's much better quality without the weird gelled goo in it, can't vouch for store or off brands. It's not the best by itself, but great sliced thin with cheese and crackers or cubed and fried added to beans and rice, or eggs, or macaroni and cheese. It also works in stir-fry of numerous types. I'm told Hawaiian "spam musubi" (prepared like sushi rolls) is pretty good also and I'd totally try it.

spam is pork shoulder mushed-up with trim from other cuts. It's maserated, combined, cooked, and canned. There isn't anything special about except you can eat it raw in war time. I work in the plant that creates the largest amount. I'd rather have tuna.

Keep in mind that SPAM is a product of a Hormel packing plant in Rochester, Minnesota; a state of mostly Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish immigrants whose forbearers intended to go to Canada, but made a wrong turn and just stayed because, being Lutheran, they figured they deserved it somehow. SPAM might smell like cat food to humans, but most self respecting cats, given a choice between SPAM and starvation, would leave the SPAM lay and eat the bugs it attracted. Being a human, I enjoy SPAM, and even the store brand imitations of it. A Brit friend of mine gave me a recipe his mother learned during WW2, using food sent by American relief organizations. During the war they used powdered eggs, which are not available in the modern world, so he used normal eggs. You mix up some instant mashed potatoes and stir in enough egg that a glob of potato dropped in a frier will hold together. Then you coat slices of SPAM with the potato mixture and deep fry them to make a nicely crispy fritter. Terrific with HP Sauce and some baked beans on toast.

Mechanically separated meat is where the bare carcass (after the "real" meat has been removed) is jetwashed to produce a slurry of cartilage and tissue and scraps, which is then drained and compressed. It's "technically" meat, but it's not fit for dogs.

Spam is not junk meat. Spam is made from pork shoulder and pork ham, with no other scraps from the hog. Pork shoulder is considered a high-quality cut of pork today. I love fried (regular) Spam (which they didn't sample) and eggs with toast for breakfast. I have also made grilled (regular) spam and cheese sandwich, not bad with tomato soup. Or just an unfried spam, mustard and mayo sandwich on bread of choice. I always keep a supply of this in the cupboard. But only original regular spam, none of those figgy type spams which I have never even tried. Never even seen them on the grocery shelf. Ever.

Dog food is good. Dog treats are pretty much overflavoured jerky. Had cat food that was kangaroo meat once it was ok. Those frosty paws doggie ice cream cups are pretty good too. And before you ask I love liverwurst and that's pretty much cat food anyway.

The Irish seem to be the only English speaking Europeans who pronounce jalepeño correctly. It's exactly like they pronounce it: Ha Le Peen Yoh. I've never heard it pronounced correctly anywhere in the UK - most especially Scotland.

A lot of modern Americans have a love and hate of Spam, the key is to cook it. If you are doing a second part, recommend checking out the recipes from the Pacific, from Hawaii, to the Philippines, and especially South Korea. The South Koreans WORSHIP spam enough that they give it as Christmas presents!

Well, my home made mince meat actually HAS meat in it. Ground chuck or ground sirloin, but meat. There are so many recipes for mince meat that one can never make an accurate generic statement about it.

100% correct. If you want to learn how to cook Spam. Look for a Hawaiian Recipe. Spam is a National Treasure in Hawaii. If you visit a local Hawaiian, you can expect to see it on the table, on a regular basis.

Spam Fried rice, spam musubi, and Spam BLT's (fried bacon flavored spam in place of Bacon) I hated spam before I discovered Musubi, then that opened me up to other delicious opportunities 😋

@@slaymakerprime I do love me some fried spam in a sammich, but do yourself an even better one, and get some hormel canned ham (usually a buck or two at any dollar store or grocery.). Shred it good with a fork and mix it in with the velveeta shells and cheese when you make that next. Fantastic.

I still like the original Spam over the others they have. There's a wonderful Korean dish that uses Spam that has eggs, potatoes, a few other ingredients and a wonderful sauce. For three or four people.... Slice and fry one can of original Spam (3/8 to 1/2 inch thick). Brown on both sides, then cut into equal size cubes. 1 can pineapple pieces 10 or 12 red potatoes, cut into four pieces then boil Five cloves minced garlic (or 3 tablespoons if pre-minced) One medium sweet onion, diced Green/Spring onions cut into 3/8 pieces (for garnish) One cup each, Hellmans mayo and sour cream Mix all in a bowl by hand, crushing potatoes as you go (you don't want them mashed) Korean BBQ sauce: One Cup catsup One-half cup brown sugar Pineapple juice from can Two Tbsp Gochujang (Add more to taste. I have a bottle but can be had at the Korean grocery in the mall next to Ace Hdwr) 1/2 cup Rice vinegar (I have a bottle but can be had at the Korean grocery in the mall next to Ace Hdwr) Two Tsp mustard powder One Tbsp each: smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and chili powder Put in saucepan, reduce to desired consistency, when somewhat cool add one Tbsp sesame oil (add more to taste) Mix thoughly and drizzle over potatos as desired. This is also great on chicken wings, sliced beef or pork.
