Tapioca comes from cassava. Also, cassava is poisonous until it's cooked. If you ever do this again, you should try feijoada, the national dish of Brazil. It's a stew with black beans and pork. It's often accompanied by sausage,. rice, greens, and coarse cassava flour to sprinkle on top.

Not all cassava is poisonous! We use the non poisonous one in Barbados all the time! We make both savoury and sweet dishes with it. The older generation used the poisonous species a lot more than we do now.

God yes, I love feijoada. One strange thing, a few places here (Los Angeles) serve it with slices of oranges sitting right on top of the stew. Is that a Brazilian thing or just something added in America? The taste never seemed match for me so I just put the slices to the side.
@stevepipenger4651
@stevepipenger4651 Год назад
They really didn’t get a good taste of Brazilian food. Feijoada is such a staple if you’re going to “try” Brazilian food. However, good feijoada takes forever to cook. To really try Brazilian food requires trying various types of grilled meats (beef, pork, chicken) that you’d get at a churrasqueira. Also, I don’t think I’d call it “simple” at all. Any real Brazilian food I have had has tons of spices. You really needed to top it off with freshly made caipirinha. Finally, a great, simple side bread is pão de queijo. As an aside, can someone teach Laura some table manners? Elbows off the table, don’t stab the food, etc.

Durian is a product of Southeast Asia, in places like Thailand and Malaysia. I'm from Brazil. These are everyday dishes, home-cooked food, but they usually come with some kind of salad. The dishes shown seemed a bit sterile, not very colorful, but the ingredients are basically the same. Another interesting thing... we don't usually eat rice and beans repeatedly like this... The reason Carne de Panela may seem sort of Irish is because a lot of Irish people were indentured servants sent to work plantations and things in Brazil and the Bahama's. The Irish culture blended with other slaves and indigenous peoples cuisine to make unique variations.

if you want it extra nice, cook it first with salt and water, not too much. Then fry it. It will be crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, and not too starchy. Perfect with beer, and any drinks.

Chips and rice are pretty common together in general in South America, it seems because Lomo saltado is another great dish that does that, and it's Peruvian.
@Jamhael1

In Brazil we have a dish called "Prato Feito", which is rice, bean stew, potato fries/chips, meat and a salad of lettuce and tomatoes. It is simple, cover all nutritional needs, have all the elements in a balanced meal, and it is very cheap. Yep, indeed rice and potatoes goes hand in hand in all South America.

We have a lot of similar things with Peru, but I think the biggest difference is the seasonings, you are very specific
@Jamhael1
@Jamhael1 10 месяцев назад
@@priscillad8 indeed - and in Brazil (I can't say about Peru because I don't know much about it) the seasoning change depending on the region and even the state you are: spicy in the Northeast, more exotic in the North, cosmopolitan in the Southeast, rustic in the Center-West, and closer to Europe in the South. And I didn't even started with the regional cuisine...

I went to a Brazilian restaurant nearby about a year ago. They had a self-serve set-up and the signs in front and over the first hot table said 'All You Can Eat, $11.99" So I loaded up what I thought was my first plate and went to the register. They told me the price was $17-something. I asked why, and they said they had stopped doing AYCE and instead were weighing the food and charging accordingly. I pointed out that they had given no warning of this change, and they pointed out where it was written on the sign over the hot table. In tiny little handwritten cursive script - in Portuguese! The food was delicious but it would have been better without the bait-and-switch.

@@REYTOR34 Thank you. Of course, I do not blame Brazilians collectively. They are a diverse lot, as almost any large group of people would be. This was in an area that had quite a few Brazilian businesses, so it may be that they just did not anticipate non-Portuguese-speakers to visit. Of course, a lot of signs were in English, so they clearly knew there were anglophone customers as well.
