Scotch Whisky Vs Japanese Whisky! That's right, we've tried many a Whiskey Versus here on the channel but today, we're trying Scotch Whisky Vs Japanese Whisky. Both drinks tend to have a lot of similarities so let's see which drinks our TRYers prefer in a blind taste-test, pitting the two drinks against each other.

What Darren said. Japan still buys so much Scottish new spirits and ships it to Japan to age it there. So the basis for a lot of Japanese whisky is Scottish.

Two of the "Japanese" bottles they tried are exactly that, although they buy Scotch, Irish, and Canadian and sometimes blend them together. Nikka Days is a blend of authentic Japanese and some Ben Nevis (since Nikka owns Ben Nevis). The only truly, 100% Japanese whisky in this video is the Coffey Grain.

Real Japanese produced whiskey is also so much like scotch, because the man that started the movement in Japan trained in Scotland. And was trying to make his whiskey as close to scotch as possible. His whiskey generally uses alot of Peet like scotch. Where most other companies (that produce their own) skip the Peet because it's expensive considering its not necessary.

Two of the four "Japanese" whiskies are rebadged imports, and Nikka Days is a blend of domestic Nikka spirits with some Ben Nevis, so only one and a half of the Japanese whiskies were actually distilled in Japan. The Coffey Malt and Coffey Grain aren't peated at all, only some Nikka expressions have a noticeable amount of peat.

0:20 The way the story is told in Japan: In the early 1900's, the son of a sake brewer, who was expected to take over the business, apparently felt that everything you could possibly do with rice sake had already been done. HIS dream was to become the first Japanese whisky distiller. Where was whisky supreme? Scotland. So he told his dad he needed to get some new ideas about rice sake and wanted to go to Scotland to develop them before bringing them home. Dad said OK and the son went to Scotland to apprentice at a whisky distiller. After learning the craft, the son returned home and basically told his dad, "PSYCH!" A few decades ago Japan started winning awards in Scotland for their Scotch so I guess the son learned well.

That would have been wonderful, but Scotch has a geographic origin, meaning that it must be made in Scotland. This is the same as our Bourbon, which must have 51% corn mash on the bill by law, made in the US, and not mixed with other flavors after distilling. This is why Bourbon filtered over apple charcoal is no longer Bourbon, but Whiskey...some call it Bourbon Whiskey, but it ain't Bourbon: looking at you Jack Daniels. So, end of the day, Japanese Scotch is a Whiskey, though a highly pleasant one.

@@persnikitty3570 sorry but you're wrong on the charcoal filtering for proof just look at any evan williams bottle for example now as for jack daniels it is still a bourbon they just prefer to call it Tennessee whiskey that's called marketing but even the master distiller at JD will tell you that first and foremost it is a bourbon it is also classified as a straight bourbon whiskey under the TTB rules

In modern usage, whisky is from Scotland and whiskey is from Ireland. The difference comes from the translation of words from the Scottish and Irish Gaelic forms. In the late 1800s, Scottish whisky was also very good quality therefore the Irish producers wanted to differentiate their spelling. Whisky’ derives from the Gaelic term usquebaugh which translates as ‘water of life’. Uisge means water. Beatha means life. It’s a term used for many types of invigorating spirits over time, for example Eau de Vie. In modern usage, whisky is from Scotland and whiskey is from Ireland.

My mom is Japanese, my dad is Irish and I was born in New York so I have no specific cultural bias on this. To me the Irish do the best blends of anyone but I'd rank the single barrel game as 1. Scotch 2. US Bourbons 3. Japanese. The Japanese win the food battle hands down but they need another 100 years in the whiskey game to compete, sorry mom.

Darren probably knows this already. But Japan is revamping their regulations so that only whiskey made in Japan can be called Japanese whiskey.

I agree on the Speysides, a bit too smokey and peaty for me, I do love me some Glenfiddich 12! I've only tried one Japanese whiskey and it was lighter than any Scotch I've tried, not bad though.
