There's a very famous song from my particular area of Norway, it's called 'Tir n'a Noir' and is by a band named Vamp. I never realized it was based on an Irish myth or legend. Everything makes so much more sense now. It is a very beautiful song, based on the stories of a beautiful people.
I'm irish and live in Ireland and I literally just found this channel, I love it, and I cant stop laughing at some of the things in it. I'm proud to be Irish. sometimes thought watching these videos and read the comment, I feel like I'm the only Irish person in the comments.
Even though I'm English I had this little book of Irish legends growing up and watching this brought back memories of reading it and rereading it, all these stories were in there. I always found the swan one sad when they all turned into old people and died :(
"she tired to kill them, couldn't. next best thing?..Swans!" that's Irish logic for ya😂 I remember learning all these when I was younger,I love Irish myths and legends there was fascinating tbh .
Irish mythology is the tits. It's like Lord of the Rings, Vallahalla and Fraggle Rock fan fiction. With a touch of the Dark Crystal. I would watch (pause for effect) the shit out of that movie.
And then CúChulainn did the stupid thing some years later and refused the Morrigan when she offered to bless him for an upcoming battle by sleeping with him. Anyone want to guess how badly that turned out?
Pinta Dubbs ahhhh I see. I learned something bc I thought the whole of Ireland was part of the UK! So, yes to my question? I don't know where your from, I'm just assuming you're Irish, but the South is looked at differently here in the States and everybody talks shit about us. We're a running joke, which, from a lot of the videos I've watched on this channel, anybody whose watched any American movies and TV, already knows.
Celeste Collinsworth I am swedish so i don't know the difference between north and south ireland more than their religion.Ireland is more "traditional" then Northern Ireland i guess.
I read a Japanese myth similar to that last one a few years ago. It was similar in that it was a man meeting a beautiful woman and living in her "country" for centuries then coming back to his home. The only differences, besides being from a completely different country, was that the man was a fisherman, the girl came from a city under the ocean, when he came back, everyone he ever knew/loved was dead and the people there thought he was a ghost, so he tried to go back to the under sea village but couldn't, so he just grew old and died alone as a hermit.
+AmyD It's very similar, it seems. Oisín was a warrior of th Fianna and Niamh Chinn Óir came to seek his hand in marriage and take her back to Tír na nÓg, he land of the young, where no one ages because time is different. After three years he goes back to find out it's actually been three hundred years; everyone is dead and the Fianna are now a legend. He was warned by Niamh to not touch Irish soil or he would lose his youth, and when he falls off her horse, he becomes a frail old man, the horse leaves, and depending on the version, he dies, or he gets pally with St. Patrick and they exchange stories of Christianity and the Fianna. Wikipedia is claiming Niamh is a fairy woman and a daughter of Manannán mac Lir, a god of the sea, but I've never heard either of those things.
It only felt like 3 years had gone by in Tír na nÓg to Oisín (that's why it's called the land of the young), when he fell off his horse the 300 years caught up with hime
I just started watching your videos...you crack me up. I just found my new favorite channel. It is the holidays and I have been depressed but not anymore you have made it much brighter :-) keep them coming .. A very grateful follower from Indiana USA
I'm not even Irish, but I had all these stories in a book when I was little. I had forgotten about them until just now. Awwww. That really took me back. :)
Oh please make a video with them trying to explain Scottish myths and legends too. It'll be hilarious to see them hear about Selkies, Kelpies and the Cait Sith.
I'm not Irish, but I lived there for a couple of years as a kid and I remember all these stories! I also remember that in 2nd grade our whole class did a play of the children of Lir. Anyway this is some random stuff, but I have very fond memories of Ireland. I hope to go back and visit sometime soon
Talk about the Banshees ! My Granny from Donegal swore she heard one as a little girl and her neighbor died that night ! Scared the heck out of me when I was 10 lol !
I love this channel! I live in Oklahoma but my great granda was from Kerry and he would tell us these old stories. My favorite was the one about Tir na nog
Seriously those two, you 'which two' i'm talking about, are so funny together and quite affectional, they make my day. Seriously, are all Irish guys this cute...? x3
miss x show So sorry for answering late, what can i say i a m jelaous hahah! i know i don't know you but it makes me very happy that had or have that experience, lucky you! when i'll get my chance to fly for the first time, the place i'm going to visit it's going to be Ireland, i assure you... :3
I knew these because where I'm from a couple hundred years back a shit load of Irish fishermen and some pirates (I've heard but it could be false) came to the island I live on and started doing their thing. 400 or so years later here I am listening to folk lore and old songs from my Irish lineage.
I had a couple of games on the Spectrum, called Tir Na Nog and Dun Darach. I had no clue about what they were about at the time and wished I was aware of what they were based upon as I think it would have made me appreciated them more. I was only 13 at the time. :-)
Ireland has plenty of other cool legends. There are heroes and sidhe like Mab, Nuada, Flidais, Lugh, and a whole host of fae and creatures like banshees, selkies, brownies, and last but least the Sluagh.
The magnificent creep It's because Irish mythology is vague. The stories are sometimes conflicting and have a lot of unexplained stuff. They do have a lot of mythological creatures that have a lot of backstory. The elves were from Nordic mythology though. Unless we're talking about different elves.
I really enjoyed this! I'm not Irish myself, but I was familiar with the stories of Cuculainn/Cu culainn (It's spelled differently in some variants, I think) and Tir na nÓg (So sorry if I spelled those wrong!). I'll have to look up more mythology!
Its not difficult to say if you know the Irish language and if you don't, its still very easy. Then again its the name of my home class so I have to know it XD
***** Dia duit :D, in Ireland you have to learn Irish until you leave secondary. And the only way to get out of it is to either be foreign (which I am but my parents want me to learn it -_-) or have a learning disability. You really don't need nor care about this but a well, now you know.
omg Children of Lir, i remember doing a play in elementary on this story. I had to read the tale while the others played it out. Wow brings back memories i didnt know it was irish tale
Children of lir myth actually has a children's book based on it. I don't remember the title(it might just have been named children of lir) but i'm pretty sure i read it in 4th or 5th grade. If i remember correctly, it was quite interesting. Does anyone else recall the book I'm speaking of?
My friend and I bought a book of Irish myths from the 99 cent store. My favorite one was about a family sitting in a house during a storm when a stranger asks for shelter. The father tells the stranger a story about his friend who was walking home from the tavern getting pipe tobacco. Some gnomes appeared and turned him into a horse. They took the horse to Jamaica to fight in a war. The gnomes won and rewarded the horse with pipe tobacco, but he kicked the gnome general and killed it. The gnomes turned him back to human and left him where they found him. The stranger asks was he drunk and the father said nay because the tobacco the gnomes gave him was in his pocket.
I love your videos, they're really funny! You remind me of BuzzFeed but I like your video better (sorry buzzfeed) I hope you continue to make more videos!
omg I remember the story of tir ne nog, there was actually a movie made based off of the fairytale, I'm american but I remember seeing once on the stars family channel.
