I put a tea towel over all my bread after I bake it. I take a basket, throw a t towel in it, put my bread in the t towel in the basket and then toss the ends of the t towel over it to cover. I never was sure why. That's just how my great grandma, grandma and mother did, so I do. 😊
I was born in Belfast and raised in USA. But my Irish family and it's large always made Irish soda bread. Just the plain simple one like you have made. Mom showed me how when I was very young. Takes a very light and fast simple shaping. I make half the recipe you use and put it in a pie pan to bake. I'm 78 this month. Also we would say cut the cross and let the fairies out :)). Love the soda farls too.
I'm from Kentucky, my wife is from England, she's been learning how to cook Appalachian recipes. She fell in love with this channel, so I surprised her today with your book and she absolutely loves it ❤️ it all started with her making your buttermilk biscuits recipe 😆
P.S., I also lathered butter in it while still warm. Left me with a beautiful softer bread.. biscuit like .. great with a soup we had for dinner, topped a thicker cut slice w/pizza sauce and previously cooked: pepperoni, sausage, green pepper, red pepper, onion and mushroom. Like a little single slice of pizza, and we also toasted it and put a jam on it.. we enjoyed it all ways 😜👌❤️
My great grandmother, Bridgette O’Malley’s recipe has you adding the soda to the buttermilk and let set 15 minutes before adding to dry ingredients. It will bubble and increase in volume. Also baste the top with butter midway through cooking and when done.
How about that buttermilk? I wonder if it's ok with the milk/lemon juice. Then add in butter for the fat? I hate it when I don't have buttermilk on hand. I wanna make it tonight! :)
Thank you for not only showing us how to make this bread but why we use specific ingredients for the recipe. I love that you do this for us with all your recipes. I find the "why" so interesting and I can build on that knowledge to be a better cook. Thank you also for the Bible verse and your words of comfort and wisdom.
Thank you so much for being here for me spiritually and in the kitchen. I have returned to church and my faith thanks to you and others. You are doing gods work, thank you.
I made this bread tonight to go with our corned beef and cabbage dinner and it was delicious! I did a couple of the variations: added one egg, 2 Tblsp of melted butter, and a Tblsp of sugar. It needed a bit more flour since I added some liquid, but it turned out perfectly. ☘️ oh, yeah, and I scored it to let the evil Fairies out! 😄
@@hyacinthp4882 I used vinegar mixed with milk because I didn’t have buttermilk either. You can also mix vinegar (or lemon juice) with dairy free milks with good results, I did this for my son for years. I imagine even powdered milk or canned milk would work. Hope this helps!
The main reason I return to watch you over and over, is your boldness and faith in God! Your recipes are a bonus to your encouragement in the Lord. God bless!
Hello, I am Irish and I love how you treat this recipe. A little extra buttermilk would be no harm. But you have understood this recipe and it is gorgeous to eat. Brown soda bread is even better. It is basically the same method. Maybe another time? Was not expecting the religious references at the end. But they are pertient. Will be coming back to see what you do. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much for this recipe. Between this and your mayonnaise rolls you should always have bread for dinner. And your biscuits for breakfast! Thank you for always giving us a Bible lesson. I look forward to that most when you are on. God bless you and comfort you. Thanks Becky
Hi, Sister Becky! I love your Tuesday Talk you did. I was truly blessed and grateful and encouraged watching it. Blessings to you, Robert from Atlantic Beach, Florida… 🙏🏼✝️🙂❤️
I like that you made the basic, traditional Irish soda bread, and I also like that you included the part about the fairies, that is, after all, part of the tradition. Great vid!
Lol. I have the corned beef & veggies in the slow cooker. I was looking for the soda bread mixins & coludn't find them, then I got Becky's notification. Praise God. 🙂
My mother in law was from Ireland. There are so many variations of this. She put in half brown flour, and she cooked hers at 325 for around an hour. No eggs, no sugar, no currants. Good simple food. She always served hers with butter and honey.
Brown soda bread is the most common. Depending on how coarse the brown flour is, you can mix in white flour to taste to lighten it. Soda, salt, buttermilk and get it in the oven quick, no kneading, so the gas from the soda isn’t wasted. Cool in a tea towel to make a nice chewy crust that doesn’t break your teeth.
Yeah that's more style also.😊 Was brought up on this but this was too fussy using mixing spoons, just dropping it out on the top, give it a quick kneading twirling around with the fingers, not the palms! The 'cross' is made to make quarters to serve and I've never heard the ridiculous stories and the american "st Patrick' from Wales. 😒I don't think this lady's ever made an Irish soda loaf before. Just looked at Grannies cooking😂 lol.😆
Lovely bread. I remember my Grandmother baking it in a Dutch oven on an open fire. If you don't have Buttermilk, use whole milk and stir into it a small carton of natural Yogurt. Works same as buttermilk but bread will be softer.
Thanks so much for the tip, it's hard to find whole buttermilk in our little town and with the price of gas, I avoid travelling to the bigger town just for groceries, trying to make do as much as we can .. hmmm, kinda like the old days? Stay well .. Bless!
@@SundaysChild1966 Young people now want so much as the world is very geared towards material things. They would be a lot happier if they were content with what they need
Thank you Lady Becky this recipe 😘, I worked with many Irish Nurses during my years of employment, and they would bring Irish Soda Bread 🍞 in.I loved it so much 😀 they would often bring me some through out the yr, thank you for always giving us a Word of encouragement from the Lord Jesus, 🙏🏻 Blessings upon you and your family exceedingly and abundantly ❤️.
Great recipe! I just finished making Irish Stew and Irish Soda Bread for our St. Patrick’s Day supper. My bread recipe is very similar to yours, except I add in raisins that have been simmered in water to plump them up. ☘️
@Blondie6, re adding Raisins to your Irish Soda Bread, how MUCH raisins, and HOW LONG do you simmer to plump them up before adding to the dough??? People have been asking.
Handful of raisins and tbls of castor sugar for the sweeter version of soda bread, otherwise know as railway cake (!raisin for every station!) or spotted dick ☘️☘️
Oh Becky you are such a delight. Not many know about blessing the bread and especially about letting the fairies out. I have always done that but even some of my friends from Ireland don't know about the fairies.
Becky!!!! You are so amazing! An amazing person, woman, cook, and soul. God guided me directly to you. Thank you for everything you share from verses to vittles. I love everything and always feel so much better after coming to your channel. I clicked to get the recipe & saw you have a new platform! Praise God!!! Thank you!!!! I have been trying to stay off of this platform but won't delete the app because I couldn't miss you. Now that I know you're over on Rumble too! I'll be following you there. God Bless you and your family! Big hugs & many thanks to you.
I just made your soda bread, added butter, egg and raisins. Man this was so quick and turned out so good. I cover the top with foil for half the bake time so it didn't get so hard. Thank you
Your bread looks so good. I will have to make some and share your video with my daughter. Plenty of times in the Old Testament God said, Do not fear neither be dismayed. As David encouraged himself in the Lord we need to do the same, and encourage others also. During these times may those who are weak and fear find strength in the Lord. Let the weak say I am strong. God Bless you, thank you so much for your videos.
Thank you Becky. Happy and blessed St. Patrick’s day to you and your loved ones. I make my bread a little different. I add butter, eggs, baking powder and raisins. Although delicious, I’ll try your recipe. Looks really good!🍀🍀🍀
I love mine with good butter and jam and a good cup of tea. Nothing like it. Manna from heaven as my Irish mother would say. ☘️💕 I also usually use half whole wheat flour.
I made this right after watching. It turned out great! I love the ease and only four ingredients. I’ll be making this all winter. Thank you for all you do. God bless you and your family 🙏
Happy St. Patrick’s Day☘️. Thank you for this recipe. It’s easier than the one I have. Good to see you today. Thanks for sharing. God bless you and your family. Take care❤️
Your so Precious IN His eyes❤ thankyou for showing this recipe. My husband and I live in our rv and this will be perfect, especially the 2 cup recipe😊 God Bless You for showing The Love of Jesus🥰
Love this recipe and can't wait to try it. Blessing the bread reminded me of my German great-grandma teaching me to make yeast bread and while kneading it I was to pray the Lord's prayer and recite the 23rd Psalm about 12 times each. I think it was as much to bless the bread as to keep me kneading it long enough. Love your verses and thanks for what you do. Blessings and Prayers.
Thank you Becky, my husband and I love your recipes! I actually prefer the “rustic” texture of bread that you mentioned, I grew up on homemade bread of all kinds. 😋 Yummy!
I don't buy bread and have been making flour tortillas and frybread I learned from this site. I am excited to bake my 'first' loaf of dairy free bread. I've made buttermilk from non-dairy milk with lemon and it's fine. I loved the tips in the comments! I live alone and on a really tight budget. Going back to work is not an option with this Pandemic and it's NOT over folks! Hawaii will stop the masking this weekend. Prayers and blessings to all! Aloha and Mahalo from Maui!
I’m so sorry for your lost,I love her recipes I will keep checking for more recipes ,my prayers are that you find peace knowing she is with the lord in perfect health.
This looks so good 😊 I had to make our St. Patrick’s Day meal a couple days ago when I was off work and had the time to do it, but I think I’m going to have to make this for something soon. Don’t know what, but something 😁
BREAKFAST! Toasted, with breakfast hash made with your left over corned beef and cabbage. Well, if you HAVE any leftover! Add a fried or poached egg on top.
I make Irish soda bread every year for St. Patrick's day. I goes really well with the corned beef and cabbage and makes a tasty treat for french toast the next day. My first husband was a Irish/ German and never celebrated St. Patrick's day until we got married, I have no idea if he does now or not. I know only one of my children that still does, he will be with us tonight. My corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots are in my crock pots cooking now and I will make the bread a bit later so it is still fairly warm for dinner tonight.
Make Irish Soda bread every year 💕 my mother made a few different loaves, some with 2 tablespoons of caraway seeds, some with raisins, some with both & some plain! Love them all😊 I also add a 2 tab sugar 🍀
Thank you so much for the word of the Lord along with your wonderful recipes. P.S. my daddy was a hillbilly from Tennessee. He was a good man. I will see him again in Heaven.
Hello Becky, Hope you're heart is feeling some lighter. I pray for you often. I love you. Thanks for the verse in Joshua. When I think of Joshua I remember the song we sang in Sunday School about him marching around the walls of Jericho and the Walls came tumbling down.
For our American Scots Irish cousins we eat mostly soda farls in Ulster and potato farls. So cut into 4 pieces before it's fried in a dry floured pan. Mostly ate with an ulster fry. It's also just cooked on the stove not in the oven. Irish soda bread is usually wholewheat and called wheaten bread here and ate with soup or good with jam and tea. Thankyou for the video it looked delicious.
We live in the western mountains of North Carolina. Our ancestors came from Ireland and Wales. I make mine like my grandma did with wheat flour and eat it with potato soup and fried cabbage.
I made this last night - it is so easy & wonderful! I will be making this from now on!! Do you by any chance have a easy good sourdough starter recipe?
Thank you for the way you explain everything. You are so refreshing and strong in the Word. It helps hearing positive messages. Bless you milady. Wishing you wellness❤
Today is my birthday and I wanted to try something different. So I made this soda bread with your corn beef and cabbage recipe. First time ever and it was so good! Thank you!
I used to go fishing in the ocean and always took this type of bread for the people that got seasick. It really helped a preteen boy there with his dad to get back to enjoying himself. :)
This is such a fun channel! My great grandmother is from Arkansas, and she taught me everything I know about cooking. I haven't heard anyone say "mash" in a long time. Thanks for the great memories. Now I need to go order your cookbook. 🙂
love your recipe, had to cry when it came to the end of your video and you talked about, how God and the outcome is NOT changing, not matter what is going on in the world...He IS still good, no matter how hard it gets! Thank you for this word!
Love your faith and the loving way you share it. Don't love your politics which you share unawares. That aside, dear sister, I have learned to implicitly trust your recipes and techniques. One can't go wrong following you in the kitchen. I praise God for your direction.
I can't believe I just found you! Ive now been binging your channel for hours now lol.. Your recipes are straightforward and look great. There are so many I can't wait to try. For you to share your faith and God's word is just the cherry on top. God bless you and I can't wait to watch all your past videos and those yet to come.
The poor Irish ate "COLCANNON." Also there is "BUBBLE AND SQUECK" they eat in England.. Both are great. Here is a real simple recipe for scones.. 3 cups self rising , flour, 300 ml of heavy ( 35% ) cream, 300 ml soda water...Bake 220 C or 428 F
Somehow I stumbled across this video and what drew me to it was your saying... Put God first. Also I'm always looking for new ideas or just recipes to fix for supper. Thank you and God bless! ❤️
My husband and I watch your videos together and love how you display every little detail in your recipes, and most of all, what we love about you is you put God first and share Scripture’s and always share His love with everyone. We love you as a brother and sister in Christ! We live in Bakersfield California, where is your hometown? Connie & Ed Harrison 💞
Oh my...... wonderful! I have celiac so I used half Bob's Red mill flour and half almond flour. I put in ALL the options so it would be moist.... and it was! What an awesome surprise this was! Thank you!
I’m creating an iPhone Note on your easy breads! Wasn’t my intention, but you have such great info and recipes. You are a great teacher, and I’m learning so much from you! I also like how chill you are, it is calming to high-strung me and makes baking bread less intimidating. Love your variation info and commentary, too. Thank you so much!! 💗
I like soda bread with apple butter. If I don't have apple butter, I like apple sauce on it! Thanks for another great recipe and encouragement from scripture!
That's why I enjoyed watching you because of your walk with the Lord Jesus I enjoy listening to you and hearing the passage from The Bible that you bring on every show continue doing what you're doing what you're doing it's encouraging and I enjoy it very much thank you for sharing the salt and the light that you bring
Thank you, I don't make bread so this sounds really easy. Joshua 1:9 is one of my favorite verses, that verse has done so much for me. God bless you and your children.
