One of the bloodiest battles of the First World War, the Battle of the Somme, was fought seventy-three years ago. To commemorate the half a million Irishmen who fought in the First World War, the Belfast-based Farset Youth and Community Development Project organised a trip to France to honour the sacrifice of the dead. Unionist and nationalist politicians joined the war veterans on the special journey.

Glad I got to see this, Irish soldiers won the Great War and defeated tyranny, many of them returned home to fight for their own rights, and gave birth to many modern freedom movements. But imagine leaving the trenches going home to face hostility and on occasions murder and shame in the years that followed. Remembrance parades were physically attacked in 1919 and the 20s and abandoned for decades after.

To Hell with all wars and conflict, what good re wars, bad government and crazy leaders tell their people to go and fight wars that they help to make, thousands and millions of people looser their precious lives, the people who survive suffer from great loss and deep regret for the remainder of the lives, Homes and countries are smashed. As one of the youngest person to join the Irish army at 13 years old ( I tricked my into the army, I left after coming to realise what I still believe) I fully agree with this old solder man, war is useless, most times it for nothing, it is very rare that good war is fought.
