Significance of this show is it was the first western hard rock band to ever perform in Mumbai with a full stage set. People traveled by train from all over India to attend, many without tickets. There were as many people outside the venue as inside. Elephants were actually used as heavy equipment to help construct the stage (made from wood). A historical music event that opened Mumbai up for other rock acts to appear.
I was at this show. I was sooooo happy. And the feelings that I had when the first notes of the song played...indescribable. I could’ve died then and be happy. It an amazing concert.
Wow! How lucky are you? That concert looked incredible! With everyone singing along, that was just amazing. I wish they recorded a full concert in Mumbai. That crowd was wonderful!
The Churchill speech makes the opening to this show give goosebumps... shame they never recorded the download set where they had the crowd buzzed by a spitfire during the speech
So, I was front row at the Perth leg of this concert and I still get goosebumps at this song. The noise, the pyro, Bruce jumping right at me ..... best concert ever
The opening with Winston Churchill's speech is a great scene-setting for the song, about the men of Fighter Command on constant readiness in the early days of WW2. The crowd is so enthusiastic because Iron Maiden had been able to actually stage shows which were accessible to them, thanks to lead singer Bruce Dickinson's ability to lease a Boeing 757 from his then-employer Astraeus Airlines, during the off-season, to fly the band to venues which would have been uneconomical to visit any other way. He captained the aircraft himself, as that was his day job at the time. His on-stage athleticism is legendary, and of course, he is well above typical fitness - on tour he trained with several international fencing teams, and was a tough opponent, having been invited to try out for the British Olympic team, he turned down the opportunity for lack of time. Of course, he has since repeated the feat but bigger and better, getting type rated to captain a 747 (this time leased through his own aviation company in Cardiff) for their most recent tour. He had to struggle for that one, as just prior to starting the conversion he had to undergo throat cancer treatment, which of course invalidated his flight crew medical certificate, and it was not until he got the all-clear from his oncologist and regained it that he could re-enter training to regain currency for his Airline Transport Pilots License and then get rated for the 747. As part of his company's business is training, he may well have been able to remain current on type during the current situation, if a training captain is also available to conduct the 6-monthly check-rides and if he has been able to travel to Gatwick for his regular medical recertification, which must be at least twice a year at his age and with his medical history. He will be getting the maximum level checkup, blood tests, eyesight tests, hearing tests (particularly challenging for a heavy metal singer who has been active for as long as he has) and running on the treadmill to test VO2Max and heart-rate to near exhaustion (if such a thing is possible for him) every time. Bruce has a strong connection with the song - he owns and flies to display aerobatics standard a genuine Spitfire, which I have overflown in the air on one of my own flights, above the exclusion zone established by NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) for a display at Duxford, where the Spitfire first entered RAF service in 1936 and which is home to more Spitfires than anywhere else, being where the Imperial War Museum's large collection is held (smaller exhibits are housed at their London headquarters). I'm close enough to watch the displays there from my garden, and the sound or Merlins, Griffins, and other warbird engines is commonplace here as pilots maintain currency and train for displays, and aircraft are test-flown following maintenance or repair - or even complete restoration. Unfortunately, I am unlikely to be able to exercise my pilots licenses in either UK or US now, as I cannot pass a medical, and besides, it would be tricky from a wheelchair.
Fantastic comment Phil, I was lucky enough to be at Duxford a few years ago when Bruce displayed his Fokker Dr1 Triplane as part of the great war display team. I was doing the flightline walk in the morning and watched the Catalina land and taxi in, the door opened and out came Bruce, he'd grabbed a lift in it from Cambridge. I went back to my car, grabbed a maiden CD, went back and asked him to sign it. During the day I found a stall selling a corgi model of his triplane, so I bought a couple, after the display had finished Bruce and the rest of the team were pushing their aeroplanes through the crowd into a hanger, I asked him if he needed a hand, he said sure, so I helped him push his Triplane. When we got to the hanger I asked him if he could sign my Triplane, he was really amazed corgi had made a model of his plane and he said it was lovely. I told him I had a spare and he could have it and I gave it him,, he was really humbled and the whole experience made my day, I still have to look at my photos to believe it happened!
It's great for the song no doubt and my favorite way to start a concert, but an odd choice in India due to the controversy Churchill stirred in the country when he once called Mahatma Gandhi "a seditious Middle Temple lawyer, now posing as a half-naked fakir".
@@brickcitycomics2135 I don't think the Maiden fans in India minded, and seem to regard it as so much water over the porcelain by now. Swapping in a different opener for one gig mid-tour is no simple matter. It certainly isn't impossible, but enough work that I would expect it to have been checked by a local tour manager if anyone thought it was going to be a problem. Clearly, it wasn't!
I think he also Ed Force One into a hostile war zone to help a British soldier get to a hospital in Germany or somewhere. Very brave if this is the case.
@@andrewbayada2475 Not Ed Force One, as they were both (the first B757 and the later B747) short-term leases, but Iron Maiden did put on a Concert in Sarajevo in the middle of the break up of Yugoslavia, which may be the occasion you are thinking of. They had to be smuggled into the still "hot" zone in the back of a truck. Bruce has also captained repatriation flights on several occasions for holidaymakers trapped in a couple of war zones which have suddenly erupted.
I always feel patriotic when I hear Churchill's speech "we will never surrender". I think this, Powerslave and Run To The Hills are my favourite Maiden songs, they are one of the best metal bands to come from my home country.
The clip where this is from Maiden Flight 666, they talk to fans before the shows. It’s so amazing to see how important this is for so many and the journey to get there. Keep up the great work!
Lucky you. These guys play in my country (US) all the time but the crowd is never as amazing as this. Maybe because we're used to seeing them almost every year. But, this show is special.
I am so proud that i was a part of this live back in March 2007, 1st time in India and was a dream come true. The atmosphere and the energy was unreal! Please please come for 1 more gig..😝
Oh yes, that would be great , how is it that Maiden sounds better live than studio versions , best metal band ever, Up the Irons, and up with that like button
Speaking of the energy level these guys have, keep in mind theyre like 50 when this was made. pretty crazy. Bruce knows how to interact with the crowd so well, makes for a great show.
Their are GREAT bassists. Every once in awhile there are EPIC bassists. Once in a lifetime there are LEGENDARY bassists. Then,...there is THE BASS GOD....Steve Harris. ALL must bow to his superior awesomeness.
I was lucky enough to see the original Powerslave tour, along with Somewhere in time. Even in 1986, these guys started the shows with such energy and build up... that they appear to come out of nowhere, and then blow you away, until you realize the houselights are on and its time to slowly make your way back to the car, and dreaming of that night for many years.

You should check out their stage design from last year’s tour- they had a fighter plane flying over the stage during this song. As for Bruce he had flamethrowers attached to his arms during Flight of Icarus.🔥🤘
Nicely done..Other tracks to check out, Back in the village, killers, remember tomorrow, die with your boots on, still life, the prisoner ,powerslave. The list goes on and on.Then you get to Bruce's solo stuff , GOLD
Nothing like Iron Maiden to start your afternoon. Thank you, guys. Suzy's facial expression at this band is priceless. She really enjoys doing these reaction videos. Travis is a cool dude, too. Kind regards and stay safe. 😷😷😷
I want to see them, Sabaton and Lovebites on the same bill. Imagine Joakim and Bruce trading vocals, while Miho plays bass alongside Steve Harris, with Miyako and Midori battling with Adrian, Janick and Dave - culminating in a drum battle - Nicko v Hannes. 🤘🔥❤️
An acquaintance of mine is the son of the owner of the biggest booking company in my neck of the woods, so he has been able to see hundreds of shows in the local arena and he told me that there are a few bands including AC/DC, Nightwish, Pink Floyd & Iron Maiden which he considers to be in a class by themselves when talking about live performances.
Hopefully, you also know that Bruce Dickensen survived throat cancer. I been loving this freaking awesome band since the beginning. I finally got to see them live just before Covid shut the world down and got to take my daughter ( who loves them because I taught her so well!) with me. I was a madwoman! Pure joy!
You know, the thing with energetic audiences helping, yes I agree. However, throughout their career, Iron Maiden have brought it out in their audiences. That is why the band has been filling stadiums.
Yes! Another legit reaction from the Wolf Hunterz. Up the Irons 🤘🏼 Nicko = The Comedian Octopus Adrian, Dave & Janick = Triple Axe Attack Steve = Point and Play Bruce = Hold the Mic, I’m Gunna Fly a Plane
Now for something that's REALLY gonna mess with your head, these guys are all in their early sixties. Me too. I still run around like a madman. Never gonna take me alive! ha ha ha
You two need to watch "Passchendaele" (Pashendale) from the death on the road live concert. It's based around the WW1 battle and they've put a lot of time and effort into making the scene fit the song. You'll see when you watch it :D
They Have a good amount of my money through yrs of tickets & Merch.. So Totally Worth every penny spent, especially when I started taking My Son to Shows at age 7. That was in yr 2002
What I like about iron maiden live albums and DVDs is that they sound like real live, not like the vast majority that are so produced that they sound like a studio album. It all sounds perfect, yes, but it doesn't sound like a real live show, including perfect voices that don't sound like that live.
For newbies ; That voice heard at the beginning is, (Britain's then PM) W. Churchill's original speech during WW2 Nazi Germany airborne attacks on Britain. This was the inspiration for the song as well..
You haven't acknowledged that Lady Gaga is a HUGE fan and sees them whenever she can. No sh*t. She's posted tons of pictures at shows and backstage and been photographed wearing Maiden shirts. She said in an interview a few years ago that a friend took her to a show, which she wasn't excited about, and she became a fan by the end of the first song. She's called them the greatest live act in the world. Seriously the only reason I like her.
Nobody goes to India, because it's not profitable. For rock bands it's just a business. It doesn't add up to anything. But Iron Maiden played like they're in England or anywhere in the world. They are respectful, kind and left a legacy that no one will ever forget.
There's actually a story about those pants. In an interview, Bruce was saying that the bits of cloths were supposed to be sewed up.... Like some sort of Eddie's clothes....but he told them to leave them hanging like that... That's how those pants became famous.
Iron Maiden: Singing about military history before Sabaton made it cool. Lol My dream concert? Here ya go: 1) DragonForce (opener) 2) Sabaton 3) Manowar 4) Unleash the Archers 5) Iron Maiden
hehe if u want to see Iron Maiden really embracing what they do and kill at a concert with the right stage props nonetheless... try 22 Accacia avenue live Hammersmith 1982
Bruce Dickinson is like this kid with ADHD that struck big and really won at life. Guy can fly a plane he can duel with a sword on a semi professional level like a British gentleman. And he's the most iconic clean metal singer in the world. He's like everything a little boy wants to be when they grow up.
