to all you haters: acknowledge that playing like you want him to play requires immense concentration. Remember that he's MUCH more focused on the audience, running around the stage and literally toying around with his instrument. You think he's going to nail everything as expected? You guys who play instruments and try to have immense stage presence know it's very difficult to do. Hence why Petrucci of Dream Theater has very little stage presence because he's much more focused on precision of his solos. It's one or the other, and Harris decided to have fun on stage.
thanks for making this. very educational. I've studied steve harris for years. I've come close to his playing style and hearing this blows me away. these songs take so much energy to play and took me awhile to get my fingers in shape. most people would expect mind blowing licks but some people comment on sloppy playing. sometimes you got to lag to fit with the bass drum. it sounds better with the other instruments. this track is just a piece to the puzzle. I'm glad this track was posted.
You're just being a fanboy dude, 'cause that's not an excuse... When you play an instrument you work always on your skills and you'll know from the beginning that you have to practice those skills in order to be clean in any situation. It's like some singers who KNOW they have to dance and singe on the stage, they practice to do that perfectly...And what are you talking about? Steve Harris doesn't run around all the time, he's posing and looking at the crowd the majority of the time
Both you fuckers other than Chris Falk literally don't know shit. But of course you haven't been in Steve's shoes so I get the ignorance. Tell you what: pick up the bass and walk the walk and see if you can play with absolute precision and perfection when you're in your 50's/60's and your body starts to crap on you. Then talk to me. I'm being serious here.
Everyone is saying they're disappointed when he's the one that wrote half the songs and got the band together. Acceptable to be sloppy live. It's rock and roll at the end of the day, not some orchestra playing. Deal with it and have fun
I'd be almost willing to bet him and every other bass player sound like this every night. Studio bass playing and live playing are two completely different things.
I don't understand why so many people is dissapointed by the way he plays. It's excellent! It sounds a bit sloppy because his extra heavy strings touches the fretboard when he plays. If you just change the sound and make it sound more like a typical bass you'll find that he plays very clean and accurate. It's just the strings touching the fretboard that makes the sound a little unpleasent.
When you're sprinting around on stage and doing the things he does, yeah, it's going to sound sloppy and human! Line it up with the Guitars, Drums and it fills the void.
you have to rember this is PRE EQ, so the amp tone would take away the scratchy fret buzz and it would sound fuller/better and more like what you hear live and on the albums
If anyone thinks this is messy, bear in mind he's running around the stage like a nutter, all that matters is the crowd here. He saves the note perfect playing for the studio and delivers an awesome performance instead
Define, "atrocious". When I hear the YYZ track, I'm in awe at how Geddy can play that so cleanly with no ringing strings or flubbed notes. What's atrocious about it?
Drums usually hide some flaws of the bass guitar ... Geddy is not a perfect player. On the 2112 bass track you can hear ringing strings. In the mix not. And on YYZ bass track, you can hear some flubber notes on that ending "solo"...
Hi Guys, in the first listening, i thought like many of you " damn, it's Steve ?!! " So I decided to do something interesting and which cannot lie : take Bruce, Nicko and of course Steve isolated tracks of Aces High Live 666 and put my guitars on it ... and when you listen all together in the mix you never imagine the bass sound like it is isolated ... you just have to look at my video to convince you !
Vortigan07 Thanx for listening ! and thanx for comment here ! hope some others guys will watch my Aces high video ! (i got also two minutes to midnight, trooper and hallowed by thy name, with the originals steve, nick bruce tracks too !)
He only plays according the currant drum beat, regardless of what the bass sounds like on its own. He plays purely to the feel of the song, and unlike most bass players he doesn't seem mind what the bass sounds like on its ow. Steves 'sloppy' playing fits perfectly with the drums!
Leo Gacitua Yeah i totally agree, that's why i decided to re record the guitar parts on this bass track and Nicko's drum track (and bruce too) and the result is here ! you can listen it on my channel, an di really appreciate your comment on this work i've done !
correction he played this song a lot 30 years before this tour, keep in mind he is also over 50 now to any one in 20-30's range saying that this is horrid sounding also he is running around stage during this song which can explain missed licks, hell i'd like to here you do better while running around.
It's been awhile since I heard it, but I remember thinking it sounded really unclean and messy. That could have been just the tone and production on it, but I'll have to listen to it again some other time.
You guys all think a legendary musician prancing around a stage with a equally legendary voalist and drummer as well as 3 fucking guitarists gives a shit about his playing sounding sloppy?
Was going to leave a comment to say if anyone thought that this badly put together effort was played by the guy who been playing it for thirty years, needs both your head and hearing checked !! But i forgot i had left one five years earlier !!
Well, if you listen to the original version of this, you can clearly tell this is Steve. And the song actually grooves really nice with all instruments included. Like Maiden always does. I'd never want to hear Maiden record their stuff strictly "to the grid", like almost all bands usually do. And this is live anyways..
No, not a bad night. I was blown away yesterday when I listened to a few Isolated Bass posts featuring Steve Harris - both studio and live. I was floored by the lack of cohesion between his left & right hand[s]. I'm not saying it's awful or anything. I am just shocked that it's so fucking jumbled and seemingly careless.
if he held his hand normally so his fingrs doesn't get stuck between the strings and didn't slap the strings whit his fingers it woudn't sound so sloppy live...
haha, if this Steve Harris then I'm Jaco Pastorius! For a start this guy is a plectrum monster - Steve wouldn't know what to do with a bloody plectrum. Hahaha, and how come you got access to the original tapes? My arse!
This IS Steve Harris! If you buy the Iron Maiden expansion pack to the game Rock band you can copy the files to the computer and get the individual tracks. This is because each track is individual in the game. It sounds like a pic because of the live mixed sound. The tone doesn't sound good now, but with all the other instruments it sounds great. He plays more accurate then it sounds like, it's the tone that makes it sound sloppy.
Hi Guys, if you want to have a good opinion, watch the video i made of Aces High, using, Nick, Bruce and of course Steve isolated tracks and hear what all this stuff sound together ... I just put on them two tracks for rhythm guitars and two for the lead parts ... and maybe you will change your opinion
I was thought exactly the same ... but i've tried something, i take this bass track, put the Nicko track and Bruce track on it, and record the two guitar parts on it, you will be very surprise by the final stuff ... you can listen it on my channel ... (you got trooper, hallowed and 2 minutes with the same idea too) feel free to share your opinion !
Even with age and running around the stage factored in, I don’t think there’s any excuse for a professional musician who wrote the song and has been performing it for over 30 years to be this bad! Bum notes everywhere, timing off .... for gods sake this sounds like my attempt at playing it when I was 14.....
His fingers don't work like they used to. It's a part of aging I guess. But what's the alternative? Just quitting? I'd rather have a live sloppy Steve than no Maiden at all.
I get what you're saying but consider the fact that the bassline is just a part of the puzzle. Combine it with the rest and still sounds awesome, sloppy or not. It doesn't hurt to put perfectionism aside for a moment
Actually, listen to other isolated basslines from studio albums. Bass tracks HAVE to sound horrible isolated in order to sound good in the mix. YYZ by Rush? Panic Attack by Dream Theater? Both phenomenal bassists. Both isolated bass tracks sound atrocious. I had to learn this when self-producing my band's debut EP and was wondering how to get my bassist to not sound like shit. The trick was not doing so.
Ryan Thompson Guitarist This is a someone who is starting off learning the bass. It's fucking obvious. Anybody can play over a background of a live recording and turn it down! What the fucks wrong with you people? Can't you tell that this is played by someone who doesn't have any rhythm?? Fuck sake man
@@1977moonchild1 yes this is Steve. Go watch the entire show available on YT they opened the set with Aces High. Right before the chorus Running, scrambling flying and you listened really closely of Harris playing, you will notice he made a mistake by attacking a note too soon and doesn't have the right timing. It happened at 50sec of the song. Steve don't seem to practice anymore and this is the reason why he is sloppy
Listen to me carefully. I play the bass guitar. I have both of Harris's basses. The blue sparkling one and the white one. I play a lot of Maiden and i know 95% of all Maidens collection. This is beyond sloppy. This is is downright insulting to Steve Harris that Morons like you think this is his playing. He is playing that song live for 34 years and you think he'd come out with this even on a bad night !! And this has nothing to do with timing you twat,it's just someone fucking about. The whole feeling and finger attacking is off by a mile. A child of ten could do better yet you think one of the best bassists in the world played his own song this badly?! And the guy doesn't need to practice you idiot, they are a live band playing most of year round. Stop talking out of your fucking arse you fucking bell end. Are you American by any chance? You thick cunt.
+Edu Enomoto it is'nt, I have acctually served as a sound engineer for iron maiden, believe me, his finger style is really really sloppy. this is a trend with multiple bands, imagine you having to pull strings that have 200 pounds of pressure on them and that while running around and shit. there ya go, that's why there's alot of bassplayers that are sloppy as hell like this.
+albert fish ... you dont get it... this dude is playing these songs for over 20+ years, yes he should NAIL them and not play like a floppy penis! when playing live you NEED to perform and not fuck it up. never heard steve digiorgio fuck up and his music is 20x more difficult, hes in his 40's And he headbangs live.
+metalmichew2 listen to Dave Mustaine live. he sounds sloppy too. it's hard work playing perfect live especially that Harris isnt getting younger. when this is combined with all the other instruments it sounds fine and no one cares when hearing it live. I agree with fish. live is raw as it's supposed to be. this isn't fucking pop music with autotune
blood and silver How about steve di giorgio? He hits every single note, while headbanging, in a tech metal band, with a fretless bass, He delivers and he is 40+. yeah, pop music with autotune.... fuck that stuff.
+metalmichew2 yeah because if one techno head can play perfectly live so can every other bassist in the world... imagine playing for over 40 years wild fast metal like Maiden. you fault him for having a few bad nights? fucking jackass
