GENERIC?!?!? BOOOOOY you betta recognize!!! The bass player is one of the best that's EVER BEEN. You really need to relisten to it instrumentaly. There's SO MUCH talent it's a shame you can't recognize it.
You don't get what it means. It means is generic within itself - all the songs are the same. Master Of Puppets was a blueprint as well, but it is by no means generic.
The guitarists in Maiden are some of the most underrated in metal. And Steve Harris is one of the greatest bass players/songwriters in metal. Up the Irons! I’m glad you liked it because of Bruce, but don’t look past the musicianship of the entire band
Glad you liked this one. BUT You should consider the fact this wasn't yet generic in the 80's dude... the word 'generic' shouldn't be used even now because no other well known band exists that sounds even remotely like Iron Maiden's guitars and drum work to this day. If you throw out the vocals, anybody who listens to metal will still recognize it's Iron Maiden. This band is on a league of their own in music. With that said..let's keep it going!
4:42 - "the music is just secondary to this dude's vocals" 5:26 - *air guitar* In all seriousness though, the band just recruited Bruce Dickinson as the bands new singer, and I think the band knew they had something special so they gave a lot of the spotlight to him. By far one of the most successful change of front man of any band, let alone Metal.
Oh, Murray and Harris absolutely cooled their jets for this album in order to let Bruce's vocals shine. In the next album you hear them step it up a bit for songs like The Trooper and Flight of Icarus.
YouYouYou!!! Artist Album Marathons If you liked the vocalist, you could do a marathon of Bruce Dickinson (solo albums). P.D: The remastered 1998 versions are not the bests. If you want to revist a particular song or album, get the no card needed free trial of Tidal (12 days) and listen to the 2015 remasters in HiFi (both 1998 and 2015 are there). Bass really shine there!
Powerslave is the shit! Can't wait til you get to that album! You are right. Maiden can be very redundant with their riffs. But Bruce ALWAYS kills it. He's way better than Paul (the singer on the first two albums)
Yeah, I'm with you on that. I love Maiden to death, but there are occasions where they dwell on a riff just a bit too long (IMO) and I can see why a non-metalhead would get bored.
I disagree. Every single band plpayer is awesome, and everything just really fits together really well, the drums, the guitar, the bass phrases, and to top it all bruce´s singing! Glad you liked it man, keep it going
I just feel like he doesnt have a very good ear for metal yet, if he was listening for about another 6 months i think he might be able to realize the greatness that is Maiden
I think it is you who doesn't have a good ear for music at all. You are easily entertained by hearing the same song in 50 iterations, because you are not able to hear through the pattern they all closely follow. If you only played the guitar, you could at least recognize thay play the same rhythms and the same chord progressions every time. But you don't, right...
I do... And of course they obviously follow the same chord progression and rhythms but they are able to completely change it up somehow and make every song a complete different and fresh experience which for some reason you don't seem to grasp. Let me guess are you trained classically? Because you seem to have a certain level of elitism that even a metalhead couldn't reach.
What a fun review. I never intended to be a regular watcher of your videos but you sir are quite entertaining and I keep coming back. Listen to ur peeps, lots are requesting megadeth and lamb of God, and for good reason, let's keep it going!
I can't see him disliking Lamb of God. I can see him being a bit hot and cold towards Megadeth. I personally like Megadeth, but mostly for their 89-99 stuff with Friedman, Menza, and Ellefson in the band. It goes without saying - sober Dave made a world of difference in the band being successful later on. Sucks that lineup is no more - Freidman kicked ass.
When he gets to megadeth it will be an up and down rollercoaster lol. Can't wait for it! I was nervous about lamb of God but it seems based on his reviews his interests have changed. I hope he revisits alive or just breathing album from killswitch engage because he shit all over that album but his music tastes have changed
Bruce fucking Dickinson baby, one of the best voices in metal and one of the best albums too, just wait to the next two, Piece of Mind and Powerslave (my personal favorite), both amazing But I can't understand how you think that this is "generic" heavy metal...
Dude! Wtf? Bruce Dickinson is no doubt an awesome vocalist but without the other band members there would be no Iron Maiden! That might be okay with you but it's not okay with me! 😎
Only the album that not only launched Iron Maiden into a major international act but launchedc a new musical movement. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Clive Burrs drumming sounds bog standerd to you?
Add Dio into the mix and you have the Holy Trinity of metal singers. No need to argue over who is "better", just state your favorite and that's that. ;)
You have to remember that when this came out it was anything but generic. The "generic" sound you're referring to was created by bands like Maiden, Priest and Sabbath - they were the bands that started the entire genre, so of course they'll sound "generic" by today's standards - because all other Metal was derived from them. They only sound "generic" because every other Metal band that came after has copied them (Along with Sabbath and Priest.) to some degree.
Wow some of the comments on here are borderline brutal. Don't worry. Our beloved boys from England will win him over. He'll listen to it again. He'll like it more the second time. Maiden does that to you. They kick you in the ass first listen/ then after your bruises heal a bit, you go back for more. Let him enter the Maiden universe at his own pace.
well, it's hard to understand how advanced this music was in 1982 when you've heard all the bands they've influenced first. this straight up blew my mind when I first heard it. no other band was playing metal like this in 1982.
When I listen to those classic 1982 metal albums, I always tend to think that this album, Screaming for Vengeance, Black Metal and probably Restless and Wild were really the cutting edge ones in terms of how metal would sound like in the following years.
I really do love your honest reactions and feedback. Entertaining. Could you do a Guns ‘N’ Roses marathon? I know they’re not exactly heavy metal but most of their stuff rocks hard
If you think this sounds like "generic regular old heavy metal" that's because all of the metal that came after this was influenced by Iron Maiden! When this album came out it was groundbreaking - it's not Maidens fault that every band thereafter modeled themselves after them. There was nothing generic about this music when it came out in the 80s and, to most metalheads, it's still very much relevant today.
I don't understand how you can call the guitar and drums generic? There's so much good there and Bruce's vocals changing directions is to go with the structure of the guitar and drums. This albums a masterpiece from everyone in the band.
Bruce sort of steals the show on this one, but the whole band is on point as always. Bruce Dickinson's solo albums would be your thing I'm sure, mainly "Accident of birth" and "The Chemical Wedding". Serious groove-metal vibe on those. Heavier than Maiden also.
you should consider that these guys kind of invented the genre and prepared the path for many other bands to come later. of course, compared to todays metal, it sounds a bit harmless and retro, but in 1982 it was a sensation
I agree actually. NOTB has never been as great as some people makes it sound. I mean, it has 2-3 AMAZING tracks - Children, Acacia & Hallowed - but otherwise the songs are kinda boring. But Bruce stands out on every song, and makes it interesting :)
Just found your channel and as an Iron Maiden fan since 1983, this was very refreshing. After two Di'Anno fronted albums I sure understand your reaction, Bruce Dickinson was something else, but in my opinion the songwriting got up several levels too and this is the first album of an golden era which lasted to Seventh Son.
feel the same way about iron maiden. songs aren't bad but aren't good either, not many stand out much, but they hold their place in metal history. but anyways i appreciate the honesty in your reactions man. it's probably tempting to say things to please the viewers (the comment section really) but you tell it how you hear it, which is the main reason people watch even if they don't agree. keep the shit up dude.
You sucked me into your channel with that RATM vid and I’ve been checking out your other stuff. I highly recommend you try out “The Darkness.” You have an interesting range of taste and I think you’d like them
Bro this don’t sound like your every day metal and not even close to generic this is some of the best bass lines and guitar solos and melodys in history of metal, and usually if someone don’t like the instruments in Iron Maiden they don’t have it on loud enough
Totally right re Bruce, the singer. The band shows up on the last song and then hard core in the next few albums. And the drummer they get on the next album is insane.
I think the only reason you think this sounds generic is because of all that has followed. Yes some songs are better than others but when it was released the was something different from the majority of other rock music. Musically it's 🔥 and done in such a way to make the vocals stand out even more. You're not going to turn the volume down on the mic when you've got a singer like that.
It's maybe harder to see in these marathons and as a newcomer to metal because you don't get the historical context of the records but Iron Maiden are more pioneers than they are 'generic' as any 'generic' sound is due to how influential they've been on other bands. It's sort of similar to when you were listening to Metallica's early records - these bands are the behemoths of their respective sub-genres.
You must be a vocal guy and the instruments are secondary. I'm just the opposite. First time I heard this I was like holy crap this is some good music and honestly I didn't think much about the singing but I later realized it was very good singing
Oh hell yeah. Bruce Dickinson. You are gonna have about a week of his vocals before he left for a solo career.. Maiden released 2 albums with a different singer.. then Bruce returns for the rest of their albums to date. What a ride.
Might be generic now that we are in 2018 and lots of bands have copy/been inspired by this album... But you gotta keep in mind this was recorded back in 1982, I bet it didn't sound generic back then.
There's no way that the songs are generic. The rest of the band is great, and the guitars are definitely there. You just didn't notice them, because you were focusing on the voice, only. Steve Harris is a great song writer, as well as the others that have contributed, or written some songs. You are right, about Bruce, though.
i cant believe im going to say this but i almost agree , bruce does dominate this album , i wont go as far as the band was just there in the background but the band definitely raises there game to bruces level on piece of mind . ill be shocked if he doesnt recognize that. 0
You really seem to like rock/metal singers that can use the high octaves. If that is the case you would really like Devin Townsend. I will never stop recommending this guy as he is for me one of the most technically skilled singers in rock/metal history.
Generic? I mean, not the most Technical of riffs and speed, but they pretty much, along with Judas Priest pioneered the twin guitar attack that most modern metal bands use nowadays not to mention their amazing use of twin guitar melody lines all over the place.
In year 2018 this album does sound generic... At least for those who still think metal is being played on 8 string guitars and machine gun drums only... But on 1982 which this album was released this is not even close to generic... its nice that you like Bruce Dickinson, who doesn't? Before you start listening and giving your opinion to an album at least check the release date... Opinions are healthy as long as you AT LEAST know some of the facts... Nice Bruce Dickinson impression by the way :p
Charlie4650 I just asked because a while ago he made a video asking for singers as good as or better than David and alot of people recommended Bruce. So I'm just seeing who he thinks is better.
Did you liked it? thats because they changed the singer in this album. The introduced Bruce Dickinson yeah!!!! UP THE IRONS YOU YOU YOU AND KEEP IT GOING YEAH!....... Did you skipped The Number of the Beast and Run to the Hills solo? those are the least generic solos out there.... waiting for your Powerslave album reaction..... Oh and Don't upload and remove your videos lol
Maiden is my fav band, and I have to agree with him on NOTB sounding "generic". Yes, The Prisoner, Hallowed, Run to the Hills, and Number are classics, but they are way better live than on this album. The NOTB album production is too clean, polished, and safe, and that works against the raw energy the songs inherently possess, that come to fruition when played live. Out of the 1st several albums (the golden years) through SSOASS, NOTB is my least favorite. Even below the 1st self-titled album. I've been a fan since 1992, and me and my friends RARELY ever played this album. Usually POM through SSOASS.
The album had a great sound for the most part although I do hate some of the intros, I dislike some of the writing and "Paul Di'anno" just sounded better. Some of the riffs are timeless on this album though.....
Id love to see what you think of brockhampton. Over the course of 2017 the boy band released 3 albums, all of which were really good in my eyes. Anyways, I like your metal stuff as well and your taste in metal is really interesting. Trivium's album shogun is my favorite album of all time, and I also think it's the most under rated album of all time. To see someone love it as much as I do brought a tear to my eye. Keep it up man.
