Join me on my incredible journey from Toronto to Michigan for the Ironman 70.3 Michigan race! In this video, I’ll take you through every step of my adventure, from the road trip to the race itself.
*Traveling to Michigan:*
I’ll share my route, including tips for a smooth drive and the excitement of crossing the border into the U.S. The anticipation built as I made my way to beautiful Interlochen State Park, a hidden gem perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.
*Camping at Interlochen State Park:*
Set against a stunning natural backdrop, my tent campsite provided a peaceful retreat. I’ll show you the amenities and surroundings, including nearby hiking trails and scenic views. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge before the big race!
*Biking Around Frankfort:*
Before race day, I explored the charming town of Frankfort, Michigan. I’ll take you along on a scenic bike ride, showcasing the breathtaking coastal views and rolling hills that made this ride so memorable. I’ll share insights into the local culture and some must-see spots for anyone visiting the area.
*Race Day Experience:*
On Sunday, it was time to put my training to the test! I’ll walk you through the adrenaline-fueled atmosphere at the starting line, the challenges of the 1.2-mile swim, and the excitement of transitioning to the bike leg.
I’ll discuss my strategies for the 56-mile bike ride and how I tackled the hilly terrain, followed by the final 13.1-mile run along the waterfront. I completed the race in 4 hours, 29 minutes, and 16 seconds, placing 103rd overall! I’ll reflect on my performance, what worked well, and what I’d do differently next time.
*Essential Race Tips:*
- *Practice in Open Water:* If your race includes a swim in open water, make sure to practice in similar conditions. This will help you get comfortable with the waves and temperature.
- *Nutrition Planning:* Experiment with different nutrition options during training to see what works best for you. On race day, stick to familiar foods to avoid any digestive surprises.
- *Gear Familiarity:* Use your race gear during training. This includes your wetsuit, bike, and running shoes. Comfort and familiarity can make a significant difference on race day.
- *Transitions Matter:* Practice your transitions to make them as smooth as possible. A few seconds saved here can add up to valuable minutes overall.
- *Stay Positive:* Mental resilience is key during long races. Develop strategies to keep your spirits up, whether it’s through mantras, music, or visualizing your success.
- *Pacing Strategy:* Start at a manageable pace to conserve energy for the later parts of the race. It’s tempting to go all out at the beginning, but a steady approach will serve you better in the long run.
