you ever feel like the quake community has the most talented people ever? it's a tiny community, but there are so many "heavy hitters" who work as engineers/scientists and then make stuff for quake on the side.

Eve Online attracted a lot of similar people. Games with strong communities in spite of the stupid shit developers/publishers do are always my jam and Quake has that in spades.

Your editing skills are increasing dramatically, love those transitions with the alpha channel effect on the opening and closing doorways as the camera flies through a section map in engine. Brilliant!

Thanks so much. I a professional editor (for nearly 30 years) but for RU-vid I just do very basic editing to save time. I made a decision recently to spend more time making these videos visually exciting so I am glad you like this approach!

the real unsung hero of the Quakespasm engine is its original creator and maintainer of the website with detailed development history, which kept the code focused on using a C base (functional code) and also kept focus the entire time on Performance, no CPU cycles being wasted, which allows us to have Quake mods that never give us slowdowns, you can thank this one person 👍

From a technology POV vqQuake is the more modern option. But the list of new features and quality of life changes Iron Wail has cannot be ignored. I'll sure check it out.

Yeah I went with vkquake. For some reason everyone loves to leave out menu options for crosshair and bobbing (including ironwail) and I don’t want to mess with inis if I don’t have to. It also works on Linux and BSD and Doom 2016 really sold me on Vulkan. I do like ironwail having integrated options for installing mods and Dwell also recommends it so I have a second quake folder for it. The periodic auto save is also a nice touch.

@@dumptruckds hey, quake modding noob, does vquake have the kind of stuff ironwail does for downloading levels and mods? That's a godsend for me to simplify all the maps/modding fiddling and it's the only thing i care about. Could you compare both in a video if suitable?

I don't think it has those features but they could be implemented in the future. I won't have time to do a comparison but i am planning on a larger engine overview. Stay tuned for that later this summer.

These new features are awesome! I think the only thing that it lacks it's a strong particle system (like QSS) to support Arcane Dimension's special effects (like smoke, custom trails, blood splats, rain, snow, etc) and realtime light/shadows to support those new maps from Quake Rereleased :)

@@Razumen It's a 2021 re-release edition from Bethesda (also called Quake Remastered, Quake Enhanced or Quake EX). It came with a new expansion pack (Dimension of the Machine) featuring realtime light/shadows effects on its maps.

It would be amazing if you did a detailed video like this on *RetroQuad.* I love the look it gives to Quake Maps, somehow making them crispier and more moody. It all feels rougher, darker. Sometimes like it is a lower resolution rendering of much much higher res textures (like scaled down 4k). It manages to convey the retro feel while looking much better at the same time. Excellent end result.

Damn, I played through Tears' with my two brothers on QSS and just settled for the frame dips figuring that it was a hard limitation common to all source ports. Our future CoOp sessions might have to run IW now! Thanks for the info 👍

Ok, you had me at "mouse menus". It's the one thing that I loved most about Mark V and other engines don't do. Also, holy crap dumptruck, these animated transitions are awesome!!! They're probably a bit time consuming to make, but man they add so much visual flair, good job!!!

I've been using Ironwail since maybe 0.5.0, so the new features since then and in this release have been great! I was one of the people who wanted the mod menu feature since I liked it from the remaster and found the console/command line process to be tedious, and I had considered suggesting that the mod menu should display the titles of mods along with the BSP or folder name but it seems it was in the works anyway. I hadn't expected to be able to download mods directly, but that is an awesome touch as well. As for performance, I use Ironwail because of the features you mentioned and the fact that my drivers don't work well with the Quake remaster's Vulkan API (and AMD won't update my drivers anymore), but I can get a solid 50-60fps in ad_tears and most other mods. Peril, Ravenkeep, and Tershibboleth have been the only ones I don't get perfect performance on, as far as I know. Overall, Ironwail is the best Quake source port I've used and the most stable. And I'd say this video highlights pretty much everything that someone would need to know to get the best out of Ironwail!

MY GOD! This is HUGE! Autoload, Search, Tab!! and basically a mapping debug tools built in, model scaling?! HOLY SHIT!!! Question tho, demos? How does it handle replaying game/multiplayer demos? QWDs? It's own custom format? Has this BEEN done away with and im just way out of the loop? CAN I WATCH THE SEAL OF NEHAHRA ON THIS??? Great review as always! I can't wait to give this a spin!

There are more features coming in the next version. Demo playback is great. Have to assume Neharah plays fine in this. It's basically a souped up Fitzquake/Quakespasm.

This video popped up at just the right time for me as I’ve been feeling like I’ve wanted something more than Quakespasm or VkQuake performance-wise for my RTX 3060. I just got a 240 Hz 1440p OLED monitor, and running retro shooters on it feels like playing on a high resolution CRT. It's so cool to see it works well with the remastered files and has so many quality of life features. Thanks for sharing; your channel is great and I'm happy to sub.

@@dumptruckds I just tried out Ironwail and holy cow this is definitely the best source port yet. Not only does it run perfectly smooth, but the amount of features built right into the settings menu without having to use the console is just fantastic. And all of the mods being able to be downloaded right from the game! How did one guy do so much better on this than the team that made the remaster? It's so good.

I honestly didn't expect this to be feature rich. I'm really impressed! Also this is the first video of yours I've seen and its great. New sub earned here... It's never been a better time to be a quake fan. I'm jumping back in after about 5 years away from it and the amount of development and content is staggering. There is nothing like the atmosphere and design of this game and I'm so excited to be back.

Wow, this is totally awesome. It scraped my installs of quake, quake remastered, quakespasm, and darkplaces and put all the mods they have into the mods directory for this engine. Considering that meant pulling data from three different hard drives that's really impressive

I am playing Peril 3.0 that can only run on Ironwail, and seeing 200+ enemies in a wide open space with a lot of detail while still running at a 144 fps made me go wtf.

I think the Quake community might be the smartest and most prolific community ever. In a time where Morrowind and Daggerfal are THRIVING and GZDoom is getting a ton of new content on what feels like a daily basis, it's wild that Quake is still outperforming these absolutely titanic communities! Not only is Ironwail one of the deepest engines on the market, regardless of game, the map mods for Quake are genuinely unbelievable. I with OpenMW got this treatment. I can't believe there's a NEW definitive way to play Quake. What a time to be alive. EDIT: It's also noteworthy that almost all of the official quake products are doing the source material justice, as well. It's so incredibly rare (borderline impossible) to have both the community and the professionals on the same page.

Amazing what the Quake community gets up to and what kind of tech they get to enjoy, while Unreal Gold stagnates without open source, with the developer actively removing it from stores, and with the only fan patching being extremely restricted to a tiny team of exhausted devs who, while doing their best, cannot make the magic happen the way open source allows. This seems insanely cool, i just wish it had support for splitscreen, splitscreen is one of the things that has kept fteqw in my mind after all these years along with the pure amount of modability it has and im suprised more source ports havent atleast attempted it.

I come here to say I tried it and I was wrong. This port is incredible. Just to say if you want to play the expensions just select it from the mods list, and then boom you have a classic background demo OF THE EXPANSION. aside of running like a dream and looking even better. This port is fantastic

Even if there will be hate: I am still waiting for kind of the Ironwail of DarkPlaces, talking from a total conversion standalone viewpoint. An Engine that brings forth the best of DarkPlaces, FTE and Ironwail in one engine. But as for Quake mapping and modding, ironwail is awesome news. Still have some unreleased map projects on my hdd that would benefit greatly from it.

qs-spiked user here. any idea how i could get colored lightmaps and the rounded nails mod to work with ironwail? those paks seem to be completely ignored by the engine. thanks in advance!

Colored lightmaps should work. Not sure what rounded nails are? If they are in pak files you might want to unpak them and see if that helps.

I installed and ran it last night, was extremely impressed by the performance, almost reaching 1000 FPS lol, however there's no transparency for water when there should be, and lighting feels like it's very desaturated, like it's wrong or something compared to software rendering or more modern source ports.

Your Alkaline 1.2 video inspired a few of my friends to finally try some Quake sourceporting and it was by messing with that I ended up finding Ironwail. So the hobby is still spreading and the love of Quake persists.

i was just testing ironwail and also decided to check how remaster's kex engine is doing. Apparently they fixed some of the performance issues i've had on release and mod incompatibility stuff like missing text lines have also been fixed. I just played some ad_tears from Arcane Dimensions with all the enhanced models and it runs great. If I actually don't run into any issues later the only downside to not using ironwail for me would be not having a mod manager because remaster's mod manager won't show any "unofficial" mods so you have to add "-game" launch argument in steam edit: actually you can run mods from console, just type "game ad" for arcane dimensions for instance edit: i've now played mods with stuff like custom ui and custom weapons and they have no problems either

I tried adding an alpha channel to violent180_ and made it fade to complete transparency on the sun glare and the city streets below, but I still see the streets moving. Edit: It worked as expected after I changed the name. I thought if a texture name existed in both a pak and a folder, Ironwail would prefer the folder?

The one with the huge bridge is "Raven's Keep" I believe. It's a stand alone mod available on Mod Database and/or Quaddicted.

Hello everyone. How about in-game physics? Is it no longer FPS dependant? No problems occuring when you are above 72 fps? Does the bunny hopping work the same way as in the standard QuakeSpasm? Thank you.

Not sure about Bunny Hopping but assume it's the same. And yes the FPS de-coupling is from Quakespasm Spiked.

Some engines have switched to frame-rate independent physics. The ones I know are the official remaster, Quakespasm-spiked, Ironwail, VkQuake, and JoeQuake. The ones most recommended to play mods are Ironwail and VkQuake.

In general you shouldn't have too many compatibility issues across the board - IW just works and is based on a well established engine.

Performance over compatibility with older hardware. By using OpenGL 4.3 it thereby lacks support for GPU's made all the way back to the 90's, but gains massive performance gains on anything made in the past decade, as mentioned. Particle effects could be added later but are not particularly Quakey and not part of its focus really.

FTE is an established port that brings a lot of options that other ports don't have. Especially with lighting, networking and models which is the hardest part of making a TC. Also has coding advances. www.fteqw.org/ The other suggestion would be the Zircon engine. Which is fairly new: www.moddb.com/mods/zircon-engine People are starting to use the Godot engine with Quake mapping which is gaining some traction as well.

I was gonna to try Darkplaces but I'm having problems finding tutorials and stuff also is making commercial game possible with FTE? If not it's cool, I'm just completely new to game dev. But I love the gameplay feel and look of Quake. Also any advice you can give a noob? lol

i wanted to try this, but it must do something different from quakespasm re reading key inputs, as the key remappings i've done in autohotkey to get my old gamepad working aren't taking in this port =(

@@dumptruckds thx. i'll try just in case, but the problem isn't with the in-game keybinds. ironwail must read key inputs at a hardware level or something whereas quakespasm doesn't. my keyremapper should work at the OS level to change which text comes up when typing into quake console irrespective of impulse bindings. i don't expect to find any docs on the issue, and i'm not going to dive into the code, tho i do kinda wonder what the change from quakespasm was, and why it was made.

After trying a lot of ports, the kex engine was the only one to run at more than 1300fps on my pc, so yeah, since noticing it I run with my fps capped
