Maybe Ironwood would be suitable for making a spoon type lure. There seems to be a trend these days for making large Pike spoons from non metal materials.

Hey Marlin Baits. Idea. What about a Multi-wood lure. Like Balsa for the back half, Iron Wood in the middle or belly, and another wood for the front and top of the bait. Seems difficult but if you are looking for a challenge I'd love to see it.

You should do a challenge with all the baits you never caught anything with.

@MarlingBaits. Its pronounced ( E-pay) when I was a fiberglasser we worked on a house that the owner had all his decks made out of IPE planks. Big big bucks and every board had to be pre drilled and screwed with stainless steel.

Why not use the sinking wood to your advantage: put a lip on it but in the opposite direction of a normal bait. That way when you reel it swims up and when you pause it sinks?

We have Ironwood in Pennsylvania. The ironwood you have likely came from Africa. I find it in Pennsylvania in areas of wet forest or swampy places. It looks like twisted black licorice candy in appearance. When live it is strong and flexible. I cut small saplings and make walking sticks from them. Once this wood dries, it is so hard and strong cutting it will ruin sawblades, and sparks will fly from the chainsaw chain. Locus, Hemlock, and white oak are similar but nothing I know of is as strong or as hard as this wood. I see you found one wood that sucks as a lure making material. I have a suggestion for a material to fill baits and make them lighter if you choose. Buy some insulation foam in a spray can. It will expand and fill voids in baits and reduce weight. It is hard once dry and can be cut and sanded if needed. Debo is one of the other You-Tube channels I tend to annoy as I do you with my comments. Your dog acts as crazy smart as you do, this makes me laugh; you look alike and act alike. You may be distantly related in some strange way.

I just discovered your channel and really enjoy your videos. Please put some safety glasses on. I almost lost my left eye when a carbide tooth broke off a table saw blade. I had to have surgery to remove it. Quarter inch higher and I would have lost my eye. I've seen too many accidents in shop settings. Once it happens you can't turn back the clock.

I say he makes the biggest bait possible, find the biggest hooks and make huge treble hooks, several feet long, huge split rings and give it away cuz you know big things are cool.

The dust from the ipe can cause upper respiratory problems. And a splinter can fester pretty fast too because of the oils in the wood. Great resilient wood but if your not careful it can be bad lol.

What about a split bait, use the iron wood for the bottom and poplar for the top. No lead, just the wood.

You should make a top water lure with an upward slant on the front so that it skips similar tho the jumping frog bait but have it as a creek chip or sunfish shaped

You could make a lure by using the ironwood on the lower 1/3 or so of it and glue basswood on to it for the upper 2/3s of it. No weights needed then perhaps? Just an idea.

You should do this again but make the lip upside down so that the lip pulls it up

What if you made a bait out of a piece of wood that was half iron wood and half of another wood, say balsa. You could epoxy a top and a bottom half, or a right and a left half, or what about two right triangle halves to have a rectangle. The last one could produce a part of the bait that would be floating wood and another would be ironwood.

Just a thought how about glue that up in a block with the balsa wood glued on top and the bottom the iron wood. then just cut out your crank bait like you normally would. it would be bottom weighted and top buoyant. no need for drilling no lead all the balance built in.

For future reference, you should absolutely wear a respirator when sanding basically any exotic wood, the dust is very toxic and will do a number on your lungs.

I like the pure science you practice with these challenges. But I have to say it hurts when you put a great bluegill back in the water. I believe in catch and cook because I don't want food stamps although I qualify. Have qualified for most of my life. Just now started to fish for dinner, lunch, and breakfast. Specific gravity does not have a measurement to it. It is simply density of material/density of water.

maybe ironwood bait needs more bright color? you want to see the woodgrain but fish want a silver flash all under it. Spoon idea is good one. Make some pike spoons from ironwood and put that flashy silver paper on it wit some red spots. You will figure it out.

To lighten that iron-wood lure even further you could have drilled multiple thru-holes side to side all the way through the rear three-quarters of the body. That may allow the lighter tail end to move side to side with better action in the water cause the water would flow through the holes.

U should try to do a paper lure..check out SolarBaits on RU-vid and type in how to make a Lure out of paper..I know u can do it.. would be a great challenge for you..

Glue or resin your iron onto another wood. Like bottom 1/3 of the bait be iron wood and the rest popular. Traditional fat shallow diving crank should be easy to make like this.

Alright, since it's such a dense wood you should try making it a thinner blade bait or else some time of slow flutter spoin for ice fishing. I'll be willing to test it this winter since ice is around the corner here in MN.

Bass tend to eat topwater baits, or any moving baits for that matter, head first. Throw another hook hanger toward the new line tie an your hookup ratio should go up!

you could look at using the ironwood as a weight for another lure rather then the opposite, given it's weight.. use it as a plug rather then using lead.

Maybe laminate 2/3 light wood and 1/3 iron wood instead of using lead. Would make the bottom durable and it could be cool to see.

How do you feel about the "taste" or the "smell" from a fish's point of view when you are presenting such a new bait that is coated with clearcoat. Do you do anything to your baits to cover or neutralize the materials used in lure-making? Now I did see a pretty decent bass eat your new bait. I'm still curious.
