I enjoyed the video. I have to fix a 70 year old head gate and gates to my yard. This will help me think through it before I pour. I was going to pour walls at an angle on both sides of the gate to prevent wash out because that's what's going on now when water flow is too fast and crests over the top.

Ya, I wish that I had gone into the side bank a good three feet on either side.

If you built wing walls on both sides, that avoids the washout on the sides. Great job though.

How many sack of concrete did you use… Bentonite mixed on sides with the dirt I bet would have helped to keep from washing out..

I think 10 80# bags. Yeah, that would have helped. I later added wings extending into the bank and added a 10' tunnel slipped on over the existing tunnel. This allowed me to have a 10' buried section after the gate. No more leaks :-)

should have just poured dry quick crete bags at edges. or reformed some wings and poured them

Yes, that would have been a good idea. I ended up digging the whole thing out, adding wings and a 6' extension to the culvert.

Was that concrete wide enough to hold ? It looks thin from here.

Yeah the thickness was fine, but it was too narrow for the ditch. It needed another couple feet to either side into the bank to keep water from washing out and getting around.

Where did you get the gate holding piece? I have the part to pull out.

I haven't found an easy place to buy an irrigation headgate online. We have a local store that sells pivots and industrial/farm irrigation supplies, but they don't have a website. Maybe ask a local farmer?? 🤷‍♂️

@@MasterJacks I was actually able to call the water master over our irrigation/secondary water and get one from him. They had a local sheet metal company make a bunch because he can get them cheaper. Had the entire gate assembly for less than half of anywhere I can find it online. Thanks for the quick reply.
