Many doctors have looked me in the eyes and have said "Stress doesn't cause it" and "You should've grown out of it by now" like dude it's beyond frustrating. Treating me like I'm over here WANTING to have to take pills in order to eat without pain.

Good video. I am however surprised that you didn’t mention FODMAPs. In my experience talking to people with IBS it seems it’s more often the oligosaccharides (chains of fructose) that cause problems, rather than fructose and lactose. In addition IBS often a comorbid condition seen in as many as half of people with ADHD and half of people with chronic widespread pain syndrome (fibromyalgia). 20% of people with fibromyalgia have ADHD as well (multiple studies in different countries demonstrate this).

Hey everyone, I have been living with IBS for 5 years and been to see many doctors and have a wide range of tests and diets. Right now it is under control for the most part largely due to a restrictive diet. However, the whole experience has lead me to look into food alternatives for people suffering with gut issues. I would love to know how it effects the wider community with regard to day to day life, my question is What are the biggest challenges/ pain points of individuals living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or similar gut issues? Personally for myself it is abdominal discomfort, eating out, drinking alcohol, dairy products, needing a toilet immediately with little notice, embarresment, working at my job while experiencing symptoms.

You are correct. IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion which is to say test / look for diagnoses with objective evidence of pathology (like peptic ulcers, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, etc) and if none is found then label it IBS.

There are like also those far younger and older that can experience onset. The peak age is around 35. Now I do have IBS-D and had this since I was very young (10). Yes at the change over from my first decade on I began to develop unexplained GI symptoms, thus have been misdiagnosed from Coeliac Disease to Crohns. Well none of the above match. Finally just before my tenth birthday, I visited this paedricatric gastroenterologist, a woman, who seem to know her stuff. Everything else had been eliminated, thus like the only remaining factor was IBS. Cuz I have more diarrhoea symptoms it has been classified as diarrhoea predominate irritable bowel syndrome or IBS-D. So like us young folk can begin this having this as children as well. I am like in my late teens almost reaching young adult status. So like I am living proof that yes my young peers can also get IBS as well. (Like you don't have to be middle age to get IBS)!

For over a year, my bowels have been moving constantly and I have been making sounds from my bowels, especially in the early morning hours, and this wakes me up, I get irritable and suddenly become constipated. I went to the doctor and had a colonoscopy. The doctor said bowel irregularity. Is it normal for the intestines to constantly move and make noise in irritable bowel syndrome?

Firstly, it matters not whether or not you are medical student. That is a silly thing to preface your statement with. Medical students have some knowledge and no idea how to apply it yet, so take a medical student’s advice cautiously. More deaths and medically caused accidents in hospitals occur during June in the USA due to newly graduated medical student who are starting their internships. Chew on that fact for a minute. Now, I DO agree with “control … stress.” But no one in this sub-thread has offered any practical methods of doing so. There are many suggested methods to control stress: pharmaceuticals are one way (anxiolytics such as benzodiazepines or buspirone or hydroxyzine …), yoga, meditation, routine exercise of one’s choosing, sauna, hot baths, playing musical instrument or any other distracting and enjoyable activity, high quality social connections and so one. All of these things can reduce stress. Adequate sleep is important as well, so attempting to have set sleep hours as well as a set sleep environment (without electronics like TV or phone or tablet). Check out information on Functional Medicine’s approach to IBS. They at least have a better formed model of the root cause of IBS and some suggestions on curative approaches that are not overly harsh to the body. If you try their approach and it doesn’t work for you, you likely won’t have caused your body more problems in trying the Functional Medicine advice.

IBS is a lot to do with vitamin deficiencies. Especially B1, B9 and B12 which is vital for red blood cells, hydration muscle nerve rain etc. we can show high B vitamins in tests when we are actually low. Because it only show what is in the blood not what is in the cell. If you gout bacteria is not good then everything goes down hill. Carbohydrates and fructose uses up B1 and potassium quickly hence IBS starts. It is a terrible thing .. can lead to B1 deficiency called Beriberi. Sadly unless you are an alcoholic doctors don’t believe in this. Many die because of there ignorance. Especially medication robbing your vitamins and minerals and destroying the good bacteria. Educate yourself on Thiamine -> B1 and how folate activates it so it works the hydration pump and helps clear sugar from the body … then folate also activates B12 … with these two working …. Thiamine then works the rest of the b vitamins. Along with the sodium and potassium pump for hydration and especially regulates your B12. So if it is extremely high or low it will start to function better with this in place. Get a person who understands genetics, nutrition and good gut health to help you .. as i Le Warne the hard way the hospitals and doctors don’t understand and lead me down a worse path. Stay safe. Educate yourself. Get help. 😊

Hello there I hope you are doing good, self education is vital when it comes to health, There’s one thing I wanna point here which is that our body is much more complicated than we think, so proving something about something isn’t enough to be certain about their relationship, many other factors should be tested and analyzed in order to be sure about how they affect each other, scientists and doctors spend decades to prove something looks so simple to us, trust me if there’s something confirmed to end the suffer of IBS or to reduce its symptoms the pharmacological companies won’t be any late to make some billions out of it:)

@@aorticvalve9154 thank you. Yes, the body is so complex. Sadly the public hospital doctors do not understand the microbiome, proper nutrition, genetic mutations or disorders. Their labels can be quite dangerous. As I learnt. Medication destroyed my digestion hence whole body impacted. I don’t expect to live. Long story. I have done RU-vid videos and my Poems By Bella page on Facebook shared my story in a poem too. The body is an incredible thing, until medication, carbs, sugars destroy the body. Hormones Matter website with Dr Marrs is excellent. Her and Dr Lonsdale wrote a book in 2019 called thiamine, deficiency, disease, dysautonomia, and high calorie malnutrition. Brilliant book. Gave me an extra three and half years of life, thou the quality from Mirtazapine… has left me in a excruciating way. But still grateful for time. Sadly this is a whole wide problem I have learnt. Doctors have so much to learn. The basics especially. If you are in the private system you have the help you need. Asap.

It seems to me that traditional western medical models of IBS are woefully lacking. They also don’t offer any curative treatments but rather symptom management only, so the issue continues chronically without resolution. I’d recommend checking out functional medicine’s approach to the “functional” disorder. They have a theory. The theory seems reasonable. They have CURATIVE solutions that are achieved through diet modification, perhaps brief prescription medication, and that are not associated with side effects or adverse effects. If the solutions don’t work, you haven’t spent a fortune on prescription medicine nor have you caused your body more issues (side effects from prescription meds). For folks who are looking for symptom management, cannabis has been another option that I’ve found super helpful for patients.
