Spinosaurids are the most utterly chaotic dinos. I always find interesting how Irritator’s movement-tracking brain could help them eat pterosaurs when the opportunity presented itself. There’s a pterosaur fossil from the same formation with bite marks that match Irritator’s teeth. It’s just very unclear whether it’s a sign of predation or scavenging

This pretty much sums up why I LOVE Spinosaurids, they are just so weird with adaptations found in no other Dinosaur family.

Spinosaurids finally entering the realm of anatomy i actually understand. That's an awesome asaptation. Also im contractually obligated to say that snakes dont actually unhinge their jaws, they use stretchy ligaments to increase the flexibility of their jaws.

If it really was the case and their mouths opened like in the art at 1:52 then, The Isle's Hypo Spino would be surprisingly close to accurate lmao.

I really hope that someone will study the skull of Suchomimus and compare it to the one of Irritator, since both are spinosaurids yet their skulls look very different when compared to each other directly.

When you're hiking through Cretaceous Brazil and something keeps ransacking your camp, and nicking the fish off your fishing line, you know you're beset by an irritator. When it challenges you to a throwdown, you are ready to identify it at a species level.

Yes I do like the pelican swallowing that just makes sense, you know nature. You look at a lot of fish eating birds and you see them do this with there jaws BUT I like the hypo spino/shin godzilla lower jaw split so I'm going to now see them doing that from now on.

It would be cool if Irritator had a pellican-like pouch!

Thanks for bringing up the potential legal actions concerning this specimen. One of the things that burn me up is when things like this happen. I remember when the Feds swooped in and "appropriated" Sue from the Black Hills Institute, I was so angry at the government for doing that, it still angers me when I read any accounts of what happened...I know this particular case is quite different from Sue's story, and hopefully this get resolved so all parties involved are satisfied....

Next discovery will be that it actually had wings and beak and it was just a massive pelican, I don’t know how it’s possible that spinosaurid anatomy and composition is changed like every month or so

My biggest wonder is wether or not this lower splitting jaw could’ve been a feature in other spinosaurids or if it was just irritator. Either way this is really really cool and when it comes to new whacky stuff like this it just furthers my love for dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals and creatures.

I really like how you get into science ethics and how it really impacts the community. It's easy to consider paleontology purely academic but there's always more to it.

Thanks for the comment at the end, is really an issue here that we are trying to adress. Recently, was announced that Ubirajara will return to Brazil in july, so things are slowly starting to change for the better thanks in part to scientists like you.

The bit on bite force makes me wonder why crocodile's bites are so strong considering they're quite snooty, I don't know a lot about their biomechanics.

It is nice how you approach the matter and make it clear how you feel about the smuggling of fossils, so as a Portuguese speaker I follow a small selection of paleontologists that are also youtubers and they always bringing new researches to the public and addresses matters such as the fossils that are being disputed in a way that everyone can understand but in very long and in depth videos, pointing out each topic of the matter. I strongly recommend that you hit them up in the channels: "Canal do Pirulla", "Zoomundo" and "Colecionadores de Fósseis", since every one of them have worked/studied abroad in U.S. or European universities. If you eventually do so and need someone to help translate things, I'm here for it.

This totally makes sense when you know its mainly a fish eater and not out there battling t-rex or something not likely.

There is Ubirajara jubatus as well that was stolen from us. It's very sad, some people say that we can't work here in Brazil, that we lack the qualifications, but man, there are so many specialized people here that are willing to study this fossils, and Germany just won't return any of them to us.

From an ornithological perspective, this makes a lot of sense! There are many birds (though not as exaggerated as pelicans) that have jaws that open outwards in order to eat fish! Some examples include cormorants, gannets and even herons!

There is a very similar ethical quandary when it comes to Assyriology (the study of Sumeria, Babylonia (aka Sumeria but later), and yes, Assyria). It is ofc, illegal to take any artifact (usually in this case cuneiform tablets) that was excavated after 1970 out of its country of origin. This... doesn't tend to stop it from happening and especially during times of war, e.g. the Gulf War, a ton of stuff was illegally excavated and smuggled out. The conundrum is that there is no way to *prove* that any given artifact was illegal smuggled after 1970, so there are very wealthy people with massive private collections of these objects of great scholarly value. The real ethical challenge for those in the field is whether to study/translate these items when offered the chance by these private collectors.

The paper is currently only available with a password because they are " currently conducting an internal review and are in communications with various parties".

It’s unlikely that their jaw splits like most people seem to think, it is more likely that it’s jaw is flexible and widens at the back of the jaw, allowing large fish to easily slide down it’s throat with minimal difficulty, while also allowing it to have an effective bite (despite being weak), rather than it’s bite being weakened by the jaw separating into two halves.

I personally think that the jaws did split, but still have very limited movement when opening compared to snakes which can move their jaws when ever whether their mouths are open or not.

Irritator's lower jaw is Flexible like a Pelican

I actually listened to one of the authors, Marco Schade, defending his PhD thesis last thursday because he works at the university that I go to. He said that he only had the skull fossil for a limited amount of time to work on. Like you said the authors are not in charge and more importantly: they don't own the fossil. Truth be told, I don't know about the laws and special conditions about the ownership of this skull but since we're talking about Germany it'll probably be very convoluted anyways.
