Thank you for this video! If my home office is in a detached garage, do I still use this form? Or do I include the allocable portion of property tax. Insurance, utilities, straight on the Schedule C? Struggling if separate structure still goes on the 8829 or not.
@teachmepersonalfinance2169
@teachmepersonalfinance2169 5 месяцев назад
IRS Publication 587 states that you can use a detached structure for this purpose, as long as it is used exclusively and regularly for your business.

@@teachmepersonalfinance2169 thank you. Would the detached structure still have to be reported on an 8829 showing the square footage to total home + detached garage square footage? Or would I skip 8829 and just report expenses directly attributable to the detached garage on the business schedule C?

@@chloemichelle7335 If you are reporting direct expenses, then you can simply enter those amounts in column (a). If you have zero expenses related to the detached structure, then you don't need to include it. But if you had indirect expenses (such as electric bill) then I believe you would have to include the square footage of the home and the detached structure.

the depreciation is not recommended if you plan to sell the home you would not qualify for the home exclusion when you sell the home. But I could be wrong.

Thanks for all the info. Reading Instructions for tax Year 2022. The instructions say If Claiming the Standard Deduction not to use Lines 10 & 11 for Mortgage Interest and Real Estate Taxes, Instead use Lines 16 & 17. Is this a new change?

This seems to be fairly consistent in the form instructions dating back to 2018. This would be the first tax year after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was passed, which put restrictions on the deductibility of home mortgage interest deductions. The 2017 version of the form instructions contain different verbiage.

Re: Form 8829. My question is similar. If I also use our shed as a studio to make products AND have a home office inside my small home do I add the square footage of the shed to the home office square footage on line 1? On line 2 do I just put the home square footage or do I also add the footage of the shed/studio?

The studio also is where I store many of my supplies needed to make my products.

@@Babywilltravel The form instructions specifically preclude any storage space for inventory. Aside from that, I would use the total square footage of your home and the shed in your calculations. I believe the portion that you don't use for inventory would be part of your Line 1, while the entire portion would be part of Line 2.

Why don’t you have any entries on lines 9 through 13?
@teachmepersonalfinance2169

I did add them, to illustrate the calculations that you would . I then deleted them as I moved through the rest of the form.

Hey there quick question I'm so stuck on this form. I operate a daycare service in home. I divided 1 by line 2 entered it on line 3. I then did line 4 and 5, divided those two lines and entered the decimal on line 6. It's a long decimal though do I put the long decimal or make it smaller? Also, I see on yours line 7 is 12.5, but when I did the math for yours .25 x 25 = 6.25. Did you double it to make it 12.5, if so why?
@teachmepersonalfinance2169
@teachmepersonalfinance2169 5 месяцев назад
Good question. You're right...it should have been 6.25%. Unfortunately, YT won't allow me to edit an existing video (I have to take the entire video down and replace it) with I've made a comment at the top of the video (and will correct this when I re-record later this year). Thank you for the catch! With respect to the decimal rounding..the instructions don't specify it, but the IRS generally tells people to round to 3 decimal places when calculating a percentage. I would use that guidance.

Would I need to have 2 Form 8829, if a business has a room in their house for a home office, but also use a portion of their shop to provide services for customers?
@teachmepersonalfinance2169
@teachmepersonalfinance2169 6 месяцев назад
Assuming that your shop is located in the same home as the home office, and that you meet the rest of the qualifying criteria, then you shouldn't have to file a separate Form 8829. If your shop is in a different home location than your home office, then you would have to file a separate Form 8829 for each location.

Am I allowed to utilize Form 8829 to deduct expenses against my net income from a Schedule K-1, generated through a Partnership that I co-own?
@teachmepersonalfinance2169
@teachmepersonalfinance2169 9 месяцев назад
No. According to the form instructions, you would need to use the worksheet in IRS Publication 587, Business Use of Your Home, in order to deduct expenses against income that you earned as a partner.
