My Dad used to wake my younger sister and I on school days in the late seventies to this song. Like any kid I acted aggravated..but what I would give to hear my Father sing this to me again.
Funny, I just shared this song on Facebook and said almost word for word what you just wrote here. Oh how I hated this song and I sure wish Dad were around to antagonise me some more with it.
funny how life is...My father was in the service. He said the entire outfit that he served in would sing it when marching. He also said they sounded good together. He took a good memory and shared it with his daughters when waking the two of us up. Love hearing I wasn't the only one. Merry Christmas..
Apparently from what I've been reading here and on FB many Dad's sang this song to wake up their kids. A woman I know told me her mother was the one who marched through the house waking everyone up and she carried on the tradition. lol ... Funny!!!
My grandma sang this in the mornings to get me up. I miss her so much. They were both WW2 vets. She's been gone 2 years and I still think about her every day. Still, this song makes me smile. Happy memories.
My Dad sometimes would sing this, but more often he would "play" the bugle with his mouth, to get me up for high school and junior high school, too! I also didn't like it , and would pull the covers over my head and yell, "Stop it!" I couldn't actually get out of bed with that "noise" going off. Of course, I'd love to hear him now.
I used to wake up to this every morning during my high school years on Long Island, New York as it would be played on WOR-AM. I am trying to get Spotify to put it on their list as I would like to wake up again to this from my phone alarm. To do so would drive my wife nuts (Lol)
I said it is my "spirit song," that I don't have a spirit animal, I have a spirit song. It's not really being lazy. Getting up at 5 :30 for years and years and driving through mean traffic to get to work can get one down. I do love this video, and the song.
This man Irving Berlin is one of the best song writers the world has ever known. He has a sweet voice full of character he sings just fine, and performing in this show was one of the happiest periods of his life. He is amazing.
Irving Berlin wrote this for his broadway show "This is The Army" where all profits went towards the army. The men who sing with him are actually Army Vets with their old Army uniforms. Just some fun facts.
It was actually written when he was drafted in 1918 as a semi-protest song. It then was used for Yip-Yip-Yahank, as a benefit to build a new visitors centre at the base. "This is the Army" was only one of three different broadway musicals to use the song, which was written twenty five years earlier :)
Nothing has changed, except for the fact that "my bugler" happens to be an alarm clock. Saw the movie when I was young and never forgot this particular song! Good to hear again..
My daughter showed me this after I've sung it for them every morning and sung it with my mom each morning as a kid/teen and I seriously never knew it wasn't something she had made up.
My father always sang this song to me on the weekends in the summer when he would wake my ister and I to begin the trek to Michigan where we camped. I didn't learn until high school that it was an Irving Berlin song.
Irving Berlin, a songwriting legend. Love his songs, love the man. His witty and original lyrics and music sublime especially in this song put a smile on your face. How many of us hold sweet memories of parents and grandparents waking us up as children to this song? Countless many. Mr. Berlin's early life was not an easy one but he loved his adopted country and it came shining through in his inspirational and patriotic music about her. And btw, I love his voice...sweet and pure, perfect for this song. And I love how his joy and enthusiam shine through, he even moves his leg to the beat. Perfect! Thanks for posting but you should reconsider your comment about his poor voice. Unnecessary and untrue.
My Grandma Margaret Chatwin, who recently passed, sang this song to us when we traveled in the trailer with her. Going to mention it in her eulogy this weekend because it is such a part of who she is.
My dad often sang the first two lines of the chorus as he woke me and my brother for school. Under the years, it has wormed through my head as, "Oh how I hate to get up in the morning, oh how I hate to get out of bed". I still sing it when I can't get out of bed, which is almost every day. I would have never guessed Irving Berlin. Check out the cartoon version by Max Fleischer, starring Betty Boop.
Our track master played this every morning at 5am as loud as he could while we were in PNG doing the Kokoda Trial. At first we hated it but then we started to listen to what the man was singing about and it is now one of my favourite songs and my alarm every morning
most people do not realize that Irving Berlin was one of broadway's greatest actors but a more well known composer and song writer... most people also dont realize that he gave us White Christmas which pretty much put Bing Crosby in Iconic status. But this is hands down one of his best
My mom woke me many mornings with this. I never forgot the words. Thanks for putting it on, even if he didn't sing all that great. This song didn't need a perfect singer. What a talent!!!
Irving Berlin is awesome. Mom sings this to my sisters and I. Grandpa sang it to her and all of her other siblings (she is the youngest of 13) Learned about Irving Berlin in Choir.... I think his music is great! -3 -3
Shocccker, I'm a little touchy about criticism of Irving Berlin's voice. Though not a singing star, he hit every note of the song that he wrote at age 55! Irving Berlin wrote hundreds of songs . . . some of the best known melodies in American music, including "Alexander's Rag Time Band," "What'll I Do?," "Blue Skies," "Puttin' on the Ritz," "Easter Parade," and "God Bless America." It is an honor to hear such a talent sing his own song, no matter the quality of his voice.
What A WONDEFUL MAN!!! i heard about his life in brief detail on Golden Days Radio 95.7 i felt a connection as i also sing and dont read music or know how to play an instrument as i read in Irvings bio on wiki encyclopedia! though im learing to more now with help!!! I Love this Mans Will to Survive and endure great Dificulty to become Great human!!! "GOD BLESS IRVING" is my song ^L^ i was in tears as i finished reading about his life.
I am touchy about Mr Berlin too. He is my music hero. While he was not a professional singer he wrote awesome and amazeing songs. And REALLY he sounds better then a lot of so called professional singers of today. In any case it is an honner to hear Mr Berlin sing one of his songs. RIP SIR
There is a story that between takes one of the camera operators said to another that it was a good thing the guy who wrote that song couldn't hear what this guy was doing to it! I'm just glad we have a record of him performing his own song.
I love his voice! It's real- something ordinary people can aspire to. Irving Berlin was amazing- and one of the best arguments ever for immigration!!!!!!
My dad, a retired Air force Tech Sargent, used to sing this song when I was a kid. It's the only song I remember him singing. He always had a smirk on his face when he sang it. lol
There is a great story that goes along with this clip. As Shocccker said this was from the movie This Is the Army. Well despite his genius in writing songs, Berlin was not much of a singer, though early he did work as a singing waiter for a time. During the rehearsals a couple of stagehands standing around as Berlin sang, commented upon his poor singing skills. One said to the other, "Boy if the guy who wrote that song could see what this guy is doing to it, he'd roll over in his grave."
One of my most favorite songs by Irving Berlin. Irving Berlin was one of the 'most American' people in the world, that so many idiots said was non-american, because he was not born in America. His songs helped unite us during the War.
Ha ha ... I do the same thing with my kids (after my grandmother would do this to me--she was born in '24), which is why I felt the need to look up the whole song, to prove I wasn't making it up. Traditions are great, huh? ;)
My grandmother would sing this song to me when i was visiting.. Of course, being woken out of a sound sleep by reveille gives a whole new meaning to "I'm going to murder the bugler". Even if the bugler is a recording...
🎵I hate waking up in the morning. Because I literally stayed up until 12 a.m playing on my phone (don't worry I always sleep at 9 p.m during weekdays because of school, unless of it's summer) and when I'm in the middle of dreaming the sun rise up, my sister had to wake me up for school during the weekdays sometimes my mom wakes me up to eat breakfast. And I just don't know what I'm even doing with my life🎵
After seeing Oklahoma! a dozen times,, Sam Goldwyn waxed lyrical to Richard Rodgers, telling him how he knew every line in the show, "right from the moment that cowboy comes on singing, 'Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning!'
I used to hear this on the radio during the War. Being a kid I wondered if a bugle was always used to get guys up every morning? I live near an Air force/ US military fort now. At 4::30 they play The national anthem every day over loud speakers. At night, often I hear Taps being played . I wonder if it is in respect for many army units loses rotated from the Fort or not? Being a large military state area, it is impossible not to know how it affects us all. Patriotism isn't unique to the US, but this is the day to embrace what it means to be an American. Yesterday it was Oh Canada's day.
