I would totally love to have this model of PRS SE Custom with a Piezo - having a piezo on electric guitars is totally underrated, mostly because electric players don’t know how to best use them. I primarily play acoustic guitar and know how to dial in the piezo with for natural tones and some fun ones (try a DS-1 on acoustic - totally badass! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻) using the pre-amp or EQ. When you have a piezo on an electric with passive/active magnetic pickups, it’s not just about turning the humbuckers or single coils down and getting something similar to acoustic tones, but also knowing how to use all the pickups together. As you showed, when a piezo is engaged and dialed in the right way, the magnetic pickups dynamics and tones can be played with! You can make an electric guitar sound lusher and fuller, you can soften the tones, you can add some brightness or bass, etc. I love reversing the phase with a piezo on its own, or doing it with the magnetic pickups and then adding some piezo into the mix. I’ve bored my friend’s electric guitars from other brands that have piezos, and it’s always fun painting a tone masterpiece and trying new things. Way to show people how to get the best from having a piezo on this Custom 24 SE, Benny! The Zack Myers SE Signature and Hollowbody Piezo II have been the two models I’d love most if I could ever afford to get a PRS since they both have a piezo, but I always wished both models had a vibrato - that would make them perfect for me. The one thing this Custom 24 is missing in my book is two tone knobs and two volumes with coil splitting. I prefer having more knobs, and the Custom 24 only has one tone, one volume. Having 22 vs 24 frets generally doesn’t matter to me (as long as it’s not 21 frets, 😂). If PRS could mash these three SE models together, that would be the ideal SE for me! Great video! Thanks to PRS, for supporting Benny’s neurotica!
Great points there. You might want to look at what Cole Clark is doing with their acoustics. Want a normal acoustic but with HSS and use acoustic guitar strings? Yep. Patented. Different pickup options of course and the use of Australian wood makes these Aussie guitars unique. The founders used to work at Maton, an Aussie icon. Cheers from this Aussie living in NZ 😎🎸🤘
You get your money s worth. I felt the same way, but I've had many s2 guitars and the se are just as good, i like the pickups better in the se versions, the new pickups, if you go back 3 years the old g and b pickups where horrible.
@@wesleymorris1 that's true...the last 2-3 years SE are very very good guitars and they look better then the S2... guitar made overseas are no jokes nowadays
Owning an SE an S2 and a Core, I say the main difference is the feel. The American made ones feel "better" can't really explain it, They all play great, love my SE too.
As a retired carpenter, in always amazed at choices and opinions about wood. Almost always, a 2 piece neck is stronger than a 1 piece. 3 piece etc, etc. when you laminate wood, the end product is stronger than the alternative. Of course that relies on it being properly done. Especially for guitar necks, the extra strength and durability from a laminated neck is just stronger, and In my opinion, better. Being that I'm not always the most coordinated person, it's important. Just my 2 cents. And the point is, didn't worry so much about solid one piece maple vs multiple pieces unless it's just for looking pretty. Peace ✌️
They really do make incredible guitars and the quality is excellent. Thank you so much for watching. Please subscribe and join the madness if you haven't already 🤘😜🤘
For some bizarre reason, when you mentioned “my Marshall stack”, my caffeine depleted brain thought, “If Marshall made an amp for jazz, it could be called the Marshallmellow”. Might be the semi-hollow PRS that triggered this odd thought. Ah. But I digress…
Prs is killing it i have 4 of the newer se guitars, silver sky se and core, swamp ash, singlecut and nf3 and the are fire, + I've had 6 core guitars, these newer se's are killer, they are pro level, you can gig for sure with them, u dont even need a pickup upgrade.
I'd actually love to see more PRS imports around that price, with specs lifted straight out of the Core guitars. I've tried many S2s and borrowed a few for professional use, none of them felt better than SEs, so especially now after they started overcharging for them an SE with closer specs to the Core is much more appealing. Plus I'd even rather get one of these than a used Core, as I'd feel more comfortable using it and not worrying about it.
I reviewed that one on my channel and it was great! I used it at several shows before I reviewed it and setup a pretty slick patch on my Fractal FM3 to handle the dual inputs and dual pickup system. It ended up being used sort of like the album "an evening with petrucci and Rudess" where I did rhythm stuff on piezo with a nice acoustic impulse response and solos with a friedman amp model. Sounded GREAT and I hated having to send it back. I'm pumped to hopefully get to try this new one out soon.
Damn Benny...even though I own 4 PRS guitar's (2 SE's..2 Core) I'm not a fan? Until I heard you blend the piezoelectric with the other pickups...fucking sounded REALLY good!
The full hollowbody SE was the same price and easily worth every penny. The top (PRS always use a thicker figured veneer than some other companies), the binding, the extra routing, the piezo system and the USA quality control/inspection in Maryland that all their SE's go through, etc they all cost more money, they take more time to build and that all translates to a higher price. There is literally no other instrument (besides the full hollow body SE) that has the same features for this price. You'd maybe need to find a used Ernie Ball JP6 but even those have jumped way up in price over where they were a few years ago (I sold a mystic dream JP6 for $1500)
There's a lot of companies offering good, better, best scenarios where they begin to overlap. For the price I'd buy a used core or S2. But that's just me, you certainly can't get a prs with these features new for that price, but I absolutely agree with your sentiment. Subscribe and join the madness
I don't think the name "student edition" needs to limit what they can do. Names are sometimes just letters and time change, SEs for a while don't have the image of student guitars but professional instruments at way more attainable prices compared to an equivalent guitar from the US.
Is it worth 1,600 hundred bucks? Let me see. I just paid 1,600 to get brakes and tires done on my car. Its been 3 days and I've already stopped thinking about them. If I had paid that much for that beautiful guitar I would be thinking about it, and enjoying it, every day for decades to come, hopefully. How many more times will I have to get my brakes done in that amount of time? Yeah, as the owner of a green SE 24 08 I can confidently state that this guitar is easily worth that much, all day long. LONG LIVE PRS!
I have the SE Hollowbody II and really like it but which it had a push/pull and switch, which is exactly what this has hahahaha. I think a few guys out there have modded theirs to add the push/pull and multi-way switch (maybe a free-way). Oh the trem is sweet too. I wonder if I could successfully install an Xtrem floating vibrato tailpiece on the hollowbody ;)
I've been featuring it in almost every video. I prefer it over the ultralead. I have a 50 watt version w the parametric eq and reverb (which I've never seen on a vht). thanks for watching dude, please subscribe and join the madness Ricky
That's the thing, once you get go 1600 you have a lot of options. You can't compare used to retail, but you can def get a ton of awesome used stuff for 1600. I know, I bought most of my cores for around that price
I had the SE Hollowbody piezo and sold it as it just didn't sound right. Plus it was missing a trem like my Core P24 Piezo. I wonder if this semi hollow might be the ticket for me. I wish that PRS would do a stereo jack instead of the separate jacks.
@TheNeuroticGuitarist well I'm a minimalist. I like things neat and less is more for me. I know that I'm kinda your opposite lol. Anyway, the stereo jack like on EBMM guitars that i also own, take a stereo TRS cable. I have them that split at the end so I can route the piezo to my PA, and the mags to my amp. Works better for my solo gigs.
That's the thing, PRS SE and epiphone are now making guitars in PRS and Gibson price territory. The question becomes do you get an SE loaded to the gills or an S2 or used Core? Personally, this isnt for me, but I see the value because you won't get a new PRS with even close to those features foe 1600.
@@TheNeuroticGuitarist ok, I see that most PRS have the back of the neck painted, i totally dislike that, so which PRS models has natural wood in the back of the neck, maybe just satin or similar? and with a trem bar ...thanks
Not in the slightest as far as tone. It's super light, so I def enjoyed that but it's actually not much lighter than se cust 24 satin which I actually enjoy playing more. The bare maple feels better on my hands than the gloss.
@@TheNeuroticGuitarist Most of my PTS semi-Hollow core guitars seem to have a bit of body resonance and a touch of warmth. I was hoping to see the same with the SE.
All of my shorts are from long form videos just cut up. these take a massive amount of work so I put them out as fast as I can but unfortunately this isn't my day job. feel free to donate to my www.patreon.com/THENEUROTICGUITARIST I truly appreciate your support
$1,600 and they put the shitty “S“ pickups in it. Saved a whole $4 by NOT putting the non “ S “ pickups. Douche move. And in no freakn world is this guitar worth $1,600. $999 MAX and even that’s probably too high. On a side note. I have several guitars from CorTek and Indonesia in general. Almost all of them are better than American. Shit I even just bought a Squier Sonic made in China for $200 new just to see how the factory there is doing. Freakn incredible guitar. Even bone stock it’s a great guitar. Neck and frets are great. Nuts great. Intonated very well. I did my setup on it and it’s a beast. Had it for 2 months and decided to swap from HSS to HSH. A JB in bridge and Jazz in neck. Definitely made a nice difference but also not necessary. The pickups are pretty good stock. I don’t even buy USA guitars at all. I bought a couple PRS a 594 and a 594 SE. Hated them both with a passion. But yeah Indonesia and CorTek specifically, build insanely good guitars. I prefer ESP Japan and Fender Japan over everything else tho.
I agree that if they put US pups in and maybe real MOP that it would make a HUGE difference from a value (and sound) standpoint. The Epiphones at this range still use Gibson USA pickups
I enjoyed this video. My PRS Tremonti SE single cut in gloss black is an awesome guitar. Except for the nut. But Ive fixed that. Should never have shipped any of those from the factory with that nut but anyway. That was 2020 and it’s 2024 and they use decent nuts now. Ive subscribed again and am dealing with cancer so i can’t buy any more guitars right now 😕 Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
Hi. It's funny how an eastern made budget guitar can sell for around the same price as a USA Fender original. It's like the Guitar Amp market is mirroring the 🚗 auto market especially the German one Where a lot of people have been sold the dream cozy cars they want but for extortionate prices. Skoda for the price of a VW. A master stroke of marketing by VW.😅. Best Regards 😃.
Could be Paul just flexing a bit. To prove he can also hit that new Epiphone price range, with SE's. I don't think many younger players will be shelling out that kinda dough. Its obviously targeting the older crowd. Not trying to knock it. But if they went and built thousands of these things. My guess is we'll see them heavily discounted in under a year. Certainly won't be the next Silversky like sales hit. For $849 I'd still be thinking, "why do I need this"?
@@TheNeuroticGuitarist I'm certain it's a sweet gee tar. But, it's pushing it to the limit of the mostly affordable SE lines range. The doublecuts all look the same to me. Super flashy tops in bright colors. With controls that look jumbled. Just not my thing, I guess? I prefer real simple oldschool layouts, with no frills. I'd bet my $629 dollar McCarty .594 Singlecut Standard in VintageCherry, with the same pickups and LP style controls with coil tap push/pull tone pots. Can get 90% of the same tones, save for the piezo. I'd pay $799. Not a penny more for one, if it had some more subdued colors, and plain top. That's just too flashy. Peace!
That is a gorgeous PRS, and certainly does offer a lot for the money. However, the trem, and piezo just don’t interest me. Even though I don’t feel the need for another PRS, I have to admit, on looks alone, this one almost tempts me.
It's worth it to someone who wants the features and doesn't want to spend 6k on a prs with the same stuff. Not to someone who would take that and spend 1600 on a used core ce or s2. Perspective.
@@TheNeuroticGuitarist agreed. I think my point got lost. My point was: the SE line of guitars are probably the best and most feature packed guitars of any of the import models from any company. The features on the SE guitars nowadays would have have been included on an ultra high end guitar in the late 90's. Other import guitars like the Sterling by music man are not up to that level of craftsmanship or playability yet. Thanks for the review. Entertaining as always
oh, I know. I'm clearly dyslexic. this is the second video where I did that, edited it, watched it like 10x and pointed to other 85/15s and still called them 58/15s. 😬 sorry bout that
No. That's the short answer. I am an avid prs owner and lover but I feel they have lost the plot a little. Each time a new SE comes out with a higher price point, the core models go even higher and now are just flat out absurd. Almost 20 years I have been a PRS fan Bois but now I'm moving onto other brands since their prices are so high. I only buy Core and American guitars or Japanese. The SE's always feels very different from a core model. 1600 on this is 1600 I could save towards a better guitar. The SE biggest problem is resale. They just don't hold their value.
My sentiments exactly. Not that it's absurd, but just that I'd rather get a used core or s2 for that money. Thank you so much for watching. Please subscribe and join the madness if you haven't already 🤘😜🤘
The nicer PRS SE guitars are starting to creep up in price. If you want one with a quilt top and ebony fretboard, you’re looking at $900-1000. Still great guitars but my SE 24 Custom was about $700 new. I don’t have an issue with overseas built guitars. I only had one built in the US. However, I refuse to buy a guitar made in China.
yeah man, I'm dyslexic. that's the SECOND video I did that. I am fixing that for the reels, but I must have watched the edit 20x and still ignored that I got it backwards. 58/85
This is greed "plain and simple"!!! even if it plays and sounds great it's still budget built with budget woods and rushed through the line craftsmanship even if the craftsmanship is decent to good its not the same as paying for that something extra and as soon as people start paying craftsman prices for budget builds then all the budget builds will end up just under 2k and the already 5k crafted instruments will move up further to 7 and 8k i feel this is a shame on prs the budget builds are for players far and wide from beginners To touring guys that want a quality instrument that can take the rigors of tour life and any player that wants to step up to a crafted instrument gets to choose to as far as I'm concerned the price for a prs se is already at a price that is on the edge of breaking the bank for those they are targeted to
And just to be clear I don't care were something is built if it's built quality and the se is not the same quality because it's not the same materials used like a full maple cap top instead of a veneer the frett work the binding thier is a difference and if prs over seas would build thier se with the full cap top and hand wire the pots and pu's id be the first in line to pay 1,600 for the true same quality instrument that would cost me over 5k to have with a usa stamp
Feels very overpriced, and I own several PRS SE's. It's essentially a Custom 24 Semi Hollow with a Piezo. The Hollow Body II SE with Piezo is expensive (I bought one on sale for $1200), but it differentiates itself from other SE's by coming with hard shell case, lots of flame maple binding all around the guitar, ebony fretboard, and abalone inlays. This guitar has none of those upgrades.
Guitars are becoming way more expensive to make so I get that it's in line with what's out there, but I agree. I had a 2 minute thing I edited out ranting about how they should at least give you abalone, mop and a hard case. I wouldn't say overpriced, just all the money
honestly this dudes ADHD vibe is abrasive but i get it... ones personality is their own and i think he sports it well. i also like that he is a collector but a man with that many guitars should be way fucking better at playing. again, i've been playing 20 years and wish i was better and spent more time learning than dinking around with toys(guitar gear). i also am not shitting on collecting, i'm one of them but really? HUNDREDS of high priced guitars and no chops?
better at playing? whats wrong with my playing? I play to exemplify the sound of the guitar, not to impress people by wanking. I have my band Lost Symphony which I guarantee shreds anything you do. Guitar World seemed to think so and so did all of the legendary players that find my playing enjoyable. Maybe have some fucking respect, I'll wait for you to show me ANYTHING that touches Lost Symphony. Did you also notice the gold records on my wall? Didn't get those by sucking 🤡🤡🤡
@@TheNeuroticGuitarist It is A PRS. Not a Paul Reed Smith. There's no Paul Reed Smith signature on that guitar. It says PRS and then a registration mark. PRS is a separate company It licenses the technology and Works in cooperation with the US company. It is a cort guitar. Made at the cort guitar factory in Indonesia. Is not a Paul Reed Smith. It is a licensed knockoff
PRS SE is overpriced and S2s as well. The best thing PRS does is the shape of their REAL models. SE and S2 look like Chinese knock-offs. PRS in general is 50% too expensive than it should be.
Still laugh at the "import" comments. Do you really think built in the USA guitars are better at or near the same price point? They're not. Look at the people working in the Cor-tek factory and look at the people working in the Gibson factory. I can tell you which one is more focused on doing a good job. I have a EBMM Stingray that retails for over $2500. I have the same model Sterling by EBMM that retails for $900. Is there a difference? Yes. The nut is better and the tuners are a little better. But the fit, finish, fretwork, etc., is practically the same. So there is a difference, but there isn't $1600 worth of difference and 99% of the audience in the crowd can't tell the difference. Same goes for my G&L Custom Shop P-bass and my $500 Vintage P-bass. But hey, it's your money.
