i think it’s a very unhealthy work culture that one needs to make up excuses to leave early or that you need to justify your leave that you’re “not slacking”. It shows that you think your team don’t respect your private life and you are being judged all the time. honestly it all boils down to your boss and what kind of culture he’s setting
Without forcing a 4 day work week. Work should allow you to leave the work place once you're done with the task for the week. Sometimes on fridays i dont know why im in the office when i know for a fact that im done with all my stuff, and im just waiting there in the office to check on emails that arent important ( im in tech ) might not work for all industries but you get my point. With the whole WFH thing. this should be continued not on a full week scale but if a particular day you're not needed in office, you're not obliged to go to office. I think that alone is big enough incentive as a first mover to get more staff/ happier staff in.
Damn you're lucky. Most of the time when I finished my task, I will be "punished" by giving me more task and people around me (particularly seniors) pretend to have something to work on. My task will never finish because my lead will keep on giving me :) what's worst is that my lead even assign those tasks originally was given to my seniors. This only makes me want to join my seniors to pretend on working on a task.
@@adriancl97 I guess it depends on how ur lead or pm gives u work? For my case I’m usually given task on Monday / wed and updates on Friday mornings. Yeah I’m lucky I guess. But imo if I were ever in ur position I’ll find greener pastures. Your work environment seems toxic.
Wah, John, good argument man. $ VS 4 day workweek. It's possible to have a 4 day workweek if only: 1. Productivity remains the same, which means no 2 hrs lunch, no smoke break, no tea break. 2. Answerable to clients in the outside world of 5 day work week.
I work in an mnc major man hour based agency. Yes we are liable to clients and we work a 4.5 hour work week. Obviously, if your tasks aren’t done, then you have the downtime to finish the week up. Management simply told clients to respect the new hours. If nobody is a first mover, changes will never happen. Yes I’m in Singapore. In an agency world where there’s lots of account management etc, it forces people to relook and prioritise which work calls should actually happen.
As much as I want 4 days work week but it's impossible as I work in Construction. Construction needs to work 6 days a week and only rest on Sunday. I work on the admin side which is also quite hard as we need to consistently update lots of things which does affect the actual construction site. If this is implemented, then construction will be slowed down. For example BTO, so those who ballot BTO will have to wait 6 years to get the house instead of 3-4 years...Taking turns during work is kinda impossible as engineer has a specific planning and execution while need to work closely to admin side. Construction normally needs to work from 8am to 6pm, site and admin side but they are allowed to work for example, 8am to 8pm (take 2 hours from 5th day and insert it on Monday to Thursday), it might work HOWEVER, it will disturb the neighbor blocks resting period due to noise and dust.
Unpopular opinion: 4 days work week is like HBL/WFH. The effects are short-term. Ull only enjoy the change because it is something new, not because it is better for you. In the long run, a 4 days work week will feel like 5 days and what's next? Implement 3 days work week? You are now cramping what was 5 days of work into 4 days. It'll be even more stressful, less leeway and buffer for problems etc. The studies and pilot test that showed better productivity have misleading conclusion because productivity is simply a ratio of input/output so like i said u are cramping 5 days of work into 4 days while the output remains the similar thats why it translates into better productivity. So, an extra holiday thats good for the mental health but at the expense of extra stress during the work week. We'll have to see the long term effects, which outweighs which to determine if it is indeed better.
16:55 No one should stay later to accompany the other staying late also! If no work, just leave, what kind of bs inefficient work system is this? If you think it's unfair that the person cause you to work late, get him to sit beside you and teach him how to do not you do for him. Please respect the work-life balance.
I hate the part where John said about asking if other staff need help. I understand that in a team, we have to work together. But if I finish my part, I should be able to go home on time. Why I need to add on my load? And I always find that the other staff cannot finish their work because they are helping other people. Because must be a "team".
but isnt there one big assumption which is that people are productive every hour they are hired? i mean cutting down to 4 days of "work" could just mean the the hours skived or getting into a productive state is reduced, which is why you might have the result of same or slightly higher productivity.
I think that could be combatted by adding rules in place. Instead of having a 4-day work week as a permanent thing, turn it into a benefit instead. Those who are low on productivity (measured by the amount of work and quality of work they have put out) won't get to maintain the 4-day work week benefit. This would work for a lot of extrinsically motivated individuals especially. You do your job on your part, it passes the quality check, you get to enjoy your 3 day break.
If we can automate nursing to a certain extend and automate certain service line to a certain extend example transportation. It all start from a small town or small part of sg maybe in University since our university like big make all the transportation auto. If u pay more u take auto cars. Just a food for thought haha. So far we have grab food robot version already.
enjoyed every episode, great work The Daily Ketchup team!! would really appreciate it if you can add the CCs though - makes it easier to follow sometimes :)
I eat chilli.... seldom ketchup... Make it Daily Ghost Pepper... with an episode... with everyone trying ghost pepper.... "again" for Jon.... muahahahaha
I didn’t know that people were so paiseh about using leave for just resting and random rest breaks. I mean if I do not want to go on an oversea trip, wouldn’t that be the only way to spend the leaves?
Forget your work stress and spend time with your family, friends, lovable things ❤️❤️❤️ We should work to live, not live to work !!! Technology is cheaper than workers. it's Time for a #BasicIncome & #FourDayWorkWeek
Sorry sidetrack a bit, you brought up a v interesting point that "it makes sense that humans should be governed by AI". I actually disagree on that. The definition of AI now is more towards automation. With machine learning, natural language processing progressing, AI will be redefined as the decision maker, which behaves "like" human. And that will be very dangerous if all decision making is relinquished to AI. Because the one v v v important factor that differentiates us from AI, and makes current society functional, is emotional biasness, morals, ethics etc that is putting a lid on what we can and should do vs what we cannot and shouldn't do.
When AI runs the world, we no longer think in terms of moral values, but whether doing certain things can be productive or objective. That may go against our values and emotion sometimes. Humans are already unhappy how invasive tech are now, with privacy issues emerging. If this progresses, I predict it will be more disastrous. We still need some authentic human element such as emotional bias to keep us sane
You cant group studies the same way as work. You're suppose to grind your asses our when you're younger because thats when u have 0 responsibilities, your parents are still young, you don't have a family. Or side hustles that grown adults do Schools should feel like a 7 day a week thing if u really wanna be successful in your industry in pursuit. between ages 16-24 IMO.
@@benballerdidthechain9095 yall really think like that? Thinking that schools shd be 7 days a week. I agree we cannot group studies and work together because of bills, family etc, but student still need times to be themselves and be a kid and also to relax(for tertiary). We cannot think school is the same as what we went through back then. (I dont rmb which) pri or sec school are doing programming. Last time our school like that? I dont think so. Even my sec school wasn't like that. Schools are getting harder. In every stages there is diff level of mental stress. Different people have different threshold on their stress level maaa.
@@joshuat3030 no maybe I came across wrongly I don’t mean 7 day school week. I meant school should feel as if it was a 7 day a week thing. During submissions in poly and uni you should grind to make sure to get through those mods. I mean you always have school holidays to look forward to. That alone is enough of a reason why work and studying is 2 complete different topics the agenda at hand here is burn out and employee benefits. You can do whatever you want during holidays. If you’re working you’re gonna be doing this for the rest of your life. Disregard the 2 week leave you’re entitled to use because you rarely do get to use it anyways 🤷🏻♂️
