Good assessment. As a 10 year owner of a 1990 300Sl-24 I can share some of my observations. First off buy the best one you can afford and beware of the biodegradable engine wiring harnesses on certain years. That issue is repairable but is a difficult one for sure. Next. Don't discount the early years 90-93 if the car was well taken care of and the owner "knows" the car by being hands on unless you just have to own a facelift model Next, some ,if not all, the top hydraulics will need attention eventually but if you look here at a company called "Top Hydraulics" his videos and knowledge are priceless and his fee for the rebuilt components is an absolute bargain. Take your time replacing the components and cycle the top during the off season to keep those seals pliable. The 300, in my opinion is charming and silky smooth but is plagued with head gasket failure at the rear of the head and luckily its just oil discharge, no one has reported oil and coolant mixing on that engine but it's still a big job, but once done your home free for decades. the 300 and later 320 are more back road cruisers and the 500 is more of a hot rod. My 240 HP (?) 300 Sl-24 is silky smooth and moves just fine even with 83000 miles on it. Brake and suspension components are straightforward and generally 124 based. The 500SL IMO is great. from 1990-93 then again from 1999-2002 because of the aforementioned wiring harness issues. I would avoid the SL600 because it is way too complex as a driver and the hydraulic suspension is sure to cause lots of grief and drain your wallet big time. Plus the engine is really sandwiched in there something awful and your not reaching anything for repairs in that engine bay. Plan on a new battery and either the alternator itself or at least the voltage regulator. Pull the radiator out, clean it thoroughly, replace the 2 sending units along with the thermostat and housing. These cars should run at 87 Celsius not 100, only the SL 600 may run at 100 Celsius. Gearboxes are very stout as are all Mercs from this era. Interior parts are far and few between and usually from donor cars and plastics are often brittle (as most convertibles are) so use caution when disassembling interior parts. Seats are best to just buy a complete interior kit and recover the upper, lower and headrests at the same time. You are not going to find lower cushions in any kind of decent shape and the drivers bolster will wear out first on the upper cushion. Body parts are plentiful and hardtops are super cheap with all needing the headliner redone-no you can't reglue it. The panoramic roof still commands big money on these cars and is more suited to a weekend show car than a daily driver, but nonetheless it is super nice but plan to pay 3500-4000 US Dollars for one. Also plan on some electrical issues with the instrument cluster and speedometer as well as the ignition switch tumbler- all fixable so don't panic. The R129 has bank vault build quality and turns heads more than you might think, at least my Signal Red one does. Beware of aftermarket wheels on these cars. Even if they look good a cheap set will never resist bending and damage like factory alloys do.
Great synopsis of the car. My 1991 is fabulous but had some reliability problems until I replaced the battery and crankshaft position sensor. Now….awesome. Not fast but smooth. Gas mileage is not great but I will still love it.
Thanks for this. My R129 in on 140k miles. I am not sure to change the alternator or not, i know the. voltage regulator will go eventually. My mechanic told me the battery light will come on first, do you think I should wait. Also my fuel pump is original too, you think I should replace this? I am thinking of simple ways to prevent breaking down on the side of the road.

In addition to all above: The airconditioning is mated to the cooling system so if your engine runs hot, check if the AC system is pressurized or not. If not, the auxiliary fans for the AC will not come on and the engine will run hot. To stop it from running hot, switch off the airco entirely by pressing the EC button on the climate control unit. The AC fans (2 small fans in front of the radiator) will come on at a default setting of around 105 degrees Celsius (instead of around 95 when all is well). Secondly, head gaskets last for around 60000 miles or 100000 kilometers I’ve been told. I replaced mine a couple of years ago and the specialist who did the work used to work on the W124 ambulances. The only thing that needed regular replacement on the M103/M104 engine was the head gasket apparently (and those engines were driven hard). You can use one as a daily driver but expect there will be something wrong with it every 2 months (these are complicated machines after all) and you have to be willing to maintain it very well (and that won’t be cheap). But if you don’t mind those inconveniences and if it’s just you or you+1, the R129 is a great proposition. It’s roomy, it’s comfy, it’s a fine motorway cruiser, it takes a lot of luggage in the boot and on the fold-down seats in the rear. And it’s a fun car to own and drive, it’s got character and gives me at least a big smile on my face when I drive mine. It’s something special.

I just got my first Mercedes. A '99 sl500 with freshly rebuilt hydraulics and 52k miles. I traded a beautiful Harley that I valued at around $12,500. I've owned it now for a little over a month and loving every minute!
Just bought a gorgeous sl500 ( single owner, a retired judge!). I'm loving it so far. Amazed at how much power it has . Gives my 2018 Mustang a run for its money 💰 🤣🤣
As someone that owns a 2014 C63, I would love a 500SL from 92. My dad worked for a Benz dealer here in the U.S. for 30 year's. He retired in 93. And when I got my permit to drive, the owner of the dealer said to me, pick any car on the lot and you can drive it, so I said, any car? And again he said yes, so I pushed the button and said, let's take out your gull wing, it was in the showroom, and he said, anything but that. So I got to drive a 600SL. But after seeing all the nightmares with a 600. I'd definitely take a 500 over it any day. The R129 is one of my favorite bodies for the SL
For anyone looking for these cars: The 1989 to 1992.5 cars did not have the biodegradable wiring harness. They had a 4 speed auto. The 500sl also had KE-Jetronic fuel injection and around 15 more hp than the 1992.5 and up. A few years later, the engine was changed again to a cheaper design with again a bit less HP.
Correct on wiring. Actually the trans is a 5 speed that starts out in 2nd gear. If you floor it from a standstill it will kick down to the very low first gear.
I too just bought an SL500. 1999 in silver with pano roof. It was intended to be something for the weekend but I can’t help but drive it whenever I need to go somewhere. The only thing I’m struggling with versus my modern car is having to put the key in the ignition. I blip it to unlock and then muscle memory shoves it in my pocket. For 5 seconds I’ll sit in front of the steering wheel until that ‘oh yeah’ moment and struggle to pull the key out lol😂. Truly gorgeous cars. I’m glad I got one before they inevitably increase in value. I do wish I’d got a Sport for the looks and AMG wheels. Next time.
Great car. Nice review. I’ve several modern classics. My ‘01 SL500 with 125k miles on the clock is like a perfectly worn leather jacket now. And I picked it up about 6 years ago knowing prices will climb. I paid $6k and it had 97k miles.
Great car I have the exact same coloured one with 150k miles on the clock. No rust replaced the front bushes and sorted an engine leak. Only goes out in dry weather with the top down. One of your last comments people stopping and talking to you. I live in a tourist village on the Norfolk broads. There is not a day goes bye after returning to the top down car without being asked about it. Lovely everyday dry weather ONLY car that gives me and people constantly asking about it Soooo much pleasure. It looks goos and is a head turner with the top down in DRY ONLY weather. I have owned a 1997 SL500 for a year now and have no regrets. Mine has a panoramic hard top, which makes the interior feel light and modern. As, you say removing the hard top transforms the car. I would recommend changing the gearbox and rear axle oil as these often get overlooked. Mercedes suggested that the gearbox is sealed for life…. I live in London and I find the SL as enjoyable and fun to drive at lower speeds as it is as at higher speeds. It isn’t a car that is always asking to be revved, which IMO makes it a perfect daily driver.
That's great to hear you have had such a positive ownership experience and fully agree with having the gearbox and rear axle serviced regularly. I was truly impressed by the SL 320 and strongly considering purchasing an R129 but can't help thinking an SL500 would be the perfect all rounder.

Maybe, but there is something VERY special about owning a twelve cylinder car. Ask anybody who has one. And they are a far better investment too, being much rarer.
I just picked up a 96 SL320 with 43,000 miles. Hydraulics for roof replaced. Just dropped off at mechanic for a thorough checkup and worklist. Amazing car I drove it from St Louis to Little Rock without issue.
I love Mercedes and have owned many over the years. I currently own a W221 S Class 320 LWB V6 Diesel and a 23 year old SLK 230 kompressor which only comes out on sunny days. I did a 400 mile round trip on Saturday in the S Class and i arrived back as fresh as a daisy. The whole trip was absolutely effortless and it returned 48mpg at 70mph and 1500 rpm which I feel is excellent for such a big car. Around town it can be a bit thirsty but is was not designed for urban driving in reality. Yes, if something goes wrong it can be expensive to fix but I have used a local Mercedes specialist for years and he is first rate and very reasonable in terms of cost. The R129 is a terrific machine not without its issues but show me a car that doesn't have its own unique problems at times. Good review.
Great video: straight forward and no nonsense. I've been debating between the SL500 and a CLK500/550 or a 55 AMG. Decisions, decisions... Another car to consider is an early Porsche Boxster 986. I had a 2002 with 30k miles and it should tick all the boxes you had mentioned. Great performance and handling, as well as easy to do the routine maintenance. Keep up the great work!
currently have both r129 SL500 (2000) and w209 clk 500 ('06) and both are amazing the m113 is one of the best engines mercedes produced. My CLK is my baby, people dont like the bug eye front end but besides headlights the car is beautiful. but i get more nods and thumbs up to the SL surprisingly haha. if your still looking these are both cheap, but if you have the budget just get a maintained 55 AMG bro you will not regret 👌🏻
1995-1996 for the upgrade 1 . 5 speed is fine but has a little more electronics in them . There is a dashboard update in each upgrade. Had my 1996 320 SL for 18 years, never let me down. This summer it drove 2800 miles to Tuscany and back did not miss a beat . 88,000 miles now and I will need a new head gasket to cure a small oil leak . If the fluid is changed regularly on the soft top system the valves don’t fail too often

They’re amazing cars…I have an immaculate 107 (300SL 1989) for the last 8 years and in 2021 I succumbed and bought a 1996 R129 SL500 which has done less than 6,000m from new. It was kept in a garage in Osaka for most of its life until it was exported to the U.K. (RHD) in late 2020 and I purchased soon after it’s arrival on these shores. I’m supposed to be selling one of my SL’s to keep some space free in the garage but I’m so conflicted! First world problems I guess…😎
The five speed gearbox makes the six cylinder engines that much better on the facelift. Also, at least down here in South Africa, the M104 3,2L engine in the SL320 is shared with the W124 which means that service kits and other engine parts are easily available.
I would gladly take either a 6 or v-8 AFTER the wiring harnesses have been sorted out. Really, for my stule (relaxed; lethargic) of driving it wouldn't matter at all, and the benefit is less complications and better fuel economy. Less weight as well.
Owned 2 r129s; a 99 sl500 & 97 sl320. MPG is almost same but 500 got up & went a tad quicker. Tire blow out put 500 into guard rail at 165k, Insurance totaled it. Sad day. Purchased the 97 with 60k for 5k. Deal. Hydrolics on top are expensive, otherwise it's a classic quality car at bargin prices if you can keep it rolling.
I have owned my SL600 V12 for 15 years now and have enjoyed it. This car is a rocket don’t need to worry about tire spin with wide tires and automatic. Up until Lotus built the new Chevy corvette from dead stop or rolling start they wasn’t any competition for my SL. Best vehicle on the market.
if its been abused and neglected it could be a nightmare. I have a 97 320SL with 27,000 miles that is in perfect condition. It is a dream to own and drive.
Excellent assessment. I've got a '95 SL320 (131K miles to date / bought at 92K) and have had no reservations about it. Admittedly, the dreaded "soft top cylinder" issue has just recently begun to rear its ugly head but swapping them out with rebuilds is not beyond the talents of someone who can follow instructions and spin their own wrenches. I did the Delphi wiring harness upgrades myself and both took me less than one day total. My SL is never driven in winter months as the American Midwestern states love to marinate cars in salt for 3-4 months a year. The !6 engine won't break your neck but it also won't break your wallet. No complaints there either. In short, I have no regrets whatsoever.
I have a 2000 SL500 with 30k miles on it. It’s like new. Had to buy a shed to clear space in my garage for the hard top. I don’t drive it much, just in good weather touring the local countryside.
Hello You did a good job, the R129 is a classic and it’s a car you’d drive on daily basis, one thing only, the SL500 is really the one you should buy. I own a 2002 R129 Silver-arrow, it go 10k only. I call the R129 , three in one Convertible Rag top Coupe You don’t see that in any other car.

Buy………but look for a 500 SL ….better future investment , greater demand. I’ve had mine, a 2001 for 18 years now and get so much pleasure from it at 76 I have no intentions of selling , nothing else that would give me all the R129 has to offer for the money, admired by young and old alike. It’s also been increasing in value in the past 5-6 years. Always Has regular annual service and recently serviced etc with SLShop who also gave me a valuation certification which didn’t disappoint, 104k now on the clock, glass roof, AMG wheels. Just love this car.
Great review. Best advice is to buy on condition of the individual car. I looked at 15 (everything except 600) and ended up buying a 280 V6 with a pano roof. After using it in Scotland, imported it to France and its ideal for wafting along country roads. Obviously less punch than a 500 but with 5 speed auto in sport it's quick enough and I have to drive 25km to get to any autoroute!. Only issue I had was a failed electronic plate in the autobox. Replaced it myself (fiddly but not hard) for less than 200€ Other than that it has just run and run for the 7 years I've had it. Pano is great over winter, but even roof off it doesn't creak.
Always drive a 500 before settling on a 320, mpg is the same, 2 more plugs a bit more oil but otherwise exactly the same but the 500 has much more power

i think the 6 cyl would handle so nice. that is a beauty btw. my 89 sl500 is still in my garage. consider it the finest thing i own. ya the tops have 13 hydraulic cylinders that outlive their seals. it's a few thou to replace them but worth it? never had any problems with the drive train at all. she pulls like a freight train and you can hustle this car with real abandon and she understands the seriousness of the situation completely. dont do that without new michelins btw. the height of MB with Bruno Saccos finale' - whatever he hailed it as his favorite car. -
That is a stunning car, I drove them new back in the day, the only other contender is a Jaguar XK8 (I sold them new) the R129 is an extremely good choice
The 1997 SL600 I really wanted, only has a freon leak and needed a new hose for the coolant as that was leaking slowly. Overall I'd say they're perfect if you keep up on maintenance and take care of them, it gets expensive when you're purchasing one with more major issues or you can't maintenance it yourself and keep up. If you work as a mechanic though this shouldn't be a huge problem. If the engine goes bad though in a v12 you're pretty fucked on cash.
Amazing car with great looks. Doesn’t need to look mean or aggressive and won’t bother environment with crazy noise like actual SL models branded AMG ..
Otto Arentzen USA Michigan March 23 /2024 I have had this 1991 Mercedes 300SL = 6 Cylinder for 25 Years . and many Problems with it the Driver Seat needed new Seat Track Assemblies ( broken Plastic Gear ) New Voltage Regulator repair articulating Wiper- System front Spoiler cracked ( low to the Ground ) new Crankshaft Position Sensor new telescope Antenna new EGR Valve Transmission Line new at Instrument - Cluster need a new Plastic Odometer Gear Water Intrusion at A- Post and at Trunk the Soft Top - Convertible is not working = needs a new Hydraulic Lift- Cylinder by removing all rear Interior Trim to get to it = very Time- consuming + expensive But I like the Car and has " sentimental Value to me " !
This develops 235bhp not 190. It won’t get anywhere near 30 mpg on a run, I’ve never got anywhere near that in my 97 320 and I’ve had it since new. Facelift year was 1996 not 98. Although, for S reg 1998 the v6 was introduced. I always felt the straight 6 felt better than the v6
I had a 320SL but didn’t really love it. It was a 98 model silver with black. I found it okay, but that’s it. I owned and still own a Rolls-Royce which I took out all the time. My every day car was a convertible as well so that bonus on the SL wasn’t enough to let me keep it. I’m currently seeking a W(A)124 cabriolet. May be I’ll gel better with that. While I have the '90 straight six - the later V6 is a better choice if you can, it is not subject to head gasket and other oil leak issues it's the same v6 in many other MB of the era
Glad you enjoyed the video. I was seriously impressed with the car as an overall package. I found that it did handle well for the type of car it is, and makes a wonderful relaxed cruiser. However my comment was aimed at if anyone expects the R129 SL to handle like a nimble light sports car (which it isn’t), they may be somewhat disappointed.
I didn't buy this one, as the allure of a V8 was too much! However, this car did sell shortly after we put this video together and as far as I am aware the new owner is still thoroughly enjoying it. Best of luck with your purchase. There's plenty of R129 SL examples for sale but buying the very best you can afford is always sensible advice. A cheap neglected one is likely to end up costing far more in the long run.
3 years ago prior to COVID and living on the Oregon coast, I was in the market for a convertible and was leaning toward $57k worth of new Mustang GT. Then Covid, then supply chain issues, and I began looking at the R129. Bought a garage queen 2000 SL500 standard with 62,000 miles for less than $10k. Drove the car for 7 months as motorcycle replacement therapy and loved every mile. Then I stumbled upon a So. Cal. driven 98 SL600 with AMG pkg and the glass top with 99,700 miles for only $9k. This was a $136,000 car in 98. It needed a bit of work all of which I did myself. Love the V12, love the active suspension. Still need to do top hydraulics. Valve cover gaskets are nearly 10 hour flat rate, but I spent six weeks of spare time in my engine compartment replacing parts that were not broke and cleaning so I could say with receipts that everything got taken care of at 100k miles. The V12 gets about 10mpg with my right foot. Switching the active suspension from comfort to sport is a very noticeable ride difference as the car does a really good job of staying flat in the corners in sport mode. Both cars have the shift-able electronic 5 speed automatic which is flawless in my opinion. Put the shift lever in the highest gear that you want to use and you get all the gears up to that gear, unlike my F150 where you put it in 3rd and you are in 3rd no matter what. The M113 engine in the V8 is bullet proof. Both of these R129's get compliments every where I go. They are comfortable on long drives. They are both done depreciating. And best of all, I bought both for less that 1/3 the price of that new Mustang, and now I also know that I bought a better cars.
Sounds like u got some great deals! I picked up a 2000 sl500 about 6 months ago 158k miles for 4k wish the miles were lower but drives great and is a blast! I am afraid to drop the top though, the hydraulics are a project I’m not sure I want to deal with! Are u still in Oregon? I’m in SoCal
@@jake2772 There is a place in Florence OR called Top Hydraulics. They have a web site and you tube videos showing how to do the mechanic work on each section of R129 top hydraulics. I believe there six videos.
Spare parts for these cars from Mercedes are extremely expensive for example £2,000 plus VAT for a throttle body back in the day they cost £300 £2,000 + for a engine loom top and bottom top is about £1,000 bottom is about £1,500 do I need to say anymore I had one of these cars and it cost me an absolute fortune I would never buy one again and I work in a trade for 25 years as a mechanic
There have been many video's lately assessing the viability of R129's as a great modern classic....it is a great car and one of the last M-B's to be properly built. However none of you have addressed one of the biggest caveats (either you haven't done your homework or you are blissfully unaware). The great Mercedes-Benz, once known for parts availability going back decades,, for all models no longer stocks all sorts of important items to running a classic.....from small items like keys (pretty important), to suspension to power steering components etc. This can mean trawling secondhand parts or copy parts of possibly dubious quality. Even much later SL's - R220's are effected by parts availability! Go in with your eyes wide open, and with luck you will have a great driving experience and pride of ownership!
An interesting point! Here in the UK parts availability from Mercedes (both UK and direct from Germany) and renowned specialists such as the SL Shop and R129.co.uk seem to be pretty good. Most will have pretty much everything you need to keep one running. Always wise to check on parts availability before you purchase though.
Hold out for the 500. Frankly they need the V8 to move it along quickly and easily it adds to the smooth cool character of the SL. If you get the 6…. You’ll always pull up next to a 500 and think Jesus I should have just got the V8. 96-99 perfect.
In the first minute or so before you got in the car, you clasped your hands together 36 times lol not a big deal but I found it really off putting and it’s quite an annoying mannerism. Gesture at the car then clap hands together, and i was mesmerised by it and zoned out from what your were saying haha. Otherwise good vid.

At high speed the six cyl work there ass of. While the 500 is calm and allways have more power. Still, as a cruiser. The 300 SL is fantastic.. 🙏🏻☺️
@@raybutts9133 mad cheap to maintain. I’ve had M119 and M113. The M119 is more expensive to maintain, just do to stuff like oil guides going bad, but the 4 cams makes up for its flaws related to age. The M113 is much more modern engine and easier to live with. Hence to why I prefer my 2001 vs my 1995. Both still stupid cheap to maintain.

Why 65,000 miles? That's an incredibly specific mileage to claim it will be a nightmare after that. Plenty of R129 SLs are out there with hundreds of thousands of miles on them and still running extremely well. Keeping on top of maintenance, regular use and always remembering that these were an expensive car originally and running costs will still reflect that are key to happy SL ownership.

A great video and a pretty car, but those 320 engines don't really have any balls. Try a 1996 or later R129 V-12 SL600...it'll put some hair on your chest!
I’ve had my 99’ since 2014 and I’ve had absolutely Zero issues with anything mentioned in this video. The bio degradable Green Party wiring harness were put on the SL’s and E -Class from 1994 model year through the 1996’s after that they were changed out. My 99’ SL 500 has been an absolute dream to own.

The ones with the wiring harness that is bio degradable is not all that bad the wiring harness is about $1,500 and $800 to put in then it’s good for about 20 years. With any of the R129’s don’t jump start it if the car battery is low. Or you will fry the roof computer and most all the other computers and it will not run right electronically again. Only trickle charge it gradually and use a maintainer always on the battery if it’s not used regularly. I keep mine in a climate controlled air conditioned garage. It liked that the best. As the dash woods are very expensive to get refinished as is the leather and most of all the expensive electronics in the car. It’s quiet complex. So if it’s a car that has been left outside with most likely higher miles and the paint is dulled out and rubber seals around windows cracked I’d walk away from it. If it’s inside the car will be forever happy. Good luck! You will love the balance it provides in its perfect complainant ride. The 5 speed auto makes it much quicker to respond over the 4sp auto also.
Just for balance: The R129 is widely considered to be incredibly well-built and wiring harness issues are well documented and are only relevant to certain model years. Most affected examples have received upgraded replacements by now and replacement harnesses are readily available from a number of places in the UK, Mainland Europe and the rest of the world relatively cheaply.
