That's the mix of Comet the wonder dog...best dog I've ever had. Sweet smart and funny. I rescued him at 6 months, he lived 17+years. He herded sheep, chickens (to their dismay),and our daughter (I'm pretty he understood she was in there). Even if I was there he would stay between her and the road and pond(the rule was a grown-up had to be present for any catching of frogs or walking in the woods across the street). Enjoy!! Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself

I loved your answer! Thank you! I would love to get the bell, but Arrow hits the door like a lunatic when he wants o go out! He is getting better.... I think some of it is on us to watch them when they walk by the door... I laughed when you said about leafs. Our two (GS as=and ACD) will "fight " over a leaf.... they are nervous nellies about everything in the house LOL.

For those who are concerned about not having a fenced backyard- there are invisible fence products! This is done via GPS and can be great to use in a variety of situations (back yards, front yards, camping, etc.) I have not tried this yet but it is definitely something to look into. Very well done video!! (:

Love your channel. I see the exact same things that we went thru almost 7 years ago with our Marley. You are definitely on the right track for sure. The exception for us is the crate. We had one for the 1st year and then Marley just decided he didn't want to use it any more. No way. Wasn't happening! We also had the extra effort to train as he was deaf from birth. He's the absolute best though and they return your investment in time with tons of love and devotion. Stick with the socialization for sure. That was an absolute key for us and still is. Try a laser too, Marley will chase that spot for as long as the batteries will last! In fact, he's very insistent after dinner, as that it his designated "Laser" fun time every day. (We have several times like that...tug of war time, chase the Kong toy time, ball time, herd dad time, herd dad and a big ball... ) He hasn't slowed down yet and is almost 7. We still get the zoomies on a regular basis. Just a quick training tip / goal: Make sure you get them trained to not dart out of the door. You need them to sit and wait to be invited / sent out every time. 100%! That skill alone will save you and them if a door accidentally gets left ajar or when going in and out. It's the rule for us even getting in and out of the truck. I guess sit and stay is the core. Looking forward to watching your team grow. Keep these great videos coming

Hi John! Thank you for watching :) And thanks for sharing all the advice! :) We're working on making them earn everything - including being invited to go outside. Rocket is not the biggest fan of the crate, but we decided we're going to keep working at it! I feel like he'd be able to self soothe better and not be such a crazy dog in the evenings if he knew he had that safe and comfortable place to go.

Thank you so much Emily!! :) Crate training is tough. It's hard getting past the thought of leaving them in there for so long, but we're really starting to properly do it, especially with Rocket. It will only benefit him when the time to leave him home all day comes!

I'm going to share something that keeps me going. Excerpt ( please read the whole thing!) from a response from JohnnyBandit in Dog Forums: "...you are never going to wear him out. Not going to happen...And the thing is...the more you exercise him, the more fit he becomes. He gains more stamina, endurance, strength, etc. Trying to exercise him calm is like trying to climb a mountain that has no crest...no matter how high you get, you still have a LONG way to go..." The whole comment is awesome and I reread it when I'm feeling guilty, overwhelmed, inadequate, etc.

@@jennaroberts6264 Thank you for sharing Jenna!! I've actually read/heard something similar to this before! It is an awesome comment, and it's funny - based on this we are constantly playing a game of how much exercise is too much vs. too little vs. just right. lol :)

We just got our red heeler about 2 weeks ago (note: we did get him early we got him when he was only around 6 weeks old) he’s about to be the 8 weeks on the 9th when most people do get there puppy’s. We have tried to be really patient with just about everything but the bitting!!!! I can’t finger out a way to get that under control he has toys of all kinds but He prefers my hands where my feet 😭.
@GrowingUpBlue
@GrowingUpBlue 3 года назад
Redirection is key and what worked for us! Always having a toy in your hand to put in their mouth instead of something they're not supposed to bite. They'll learn to redirect that urge to bite to a toy instead. It may take awhile, but patience, constant redirection, and firm NOs are important. Congrats on getting your pup! :)

Hello, my kids and I have been watching all of your videos, and following your journey closely. We really like your perspectives, and personality. We had decided to get a cattle dog months ago, and we are down to the last few weeks before we pick her up. We live in a mountain resort town in western Canada surrounded by wilderness. We see bears almost every week here. Our question is around wild animals and recall. We really want to ensure that our girl (red heeler named Tilly) will come right away when she is called. Have you had any encounters with wildlife with your doggos? And, do you have any tips for training a good “come”? Thanks!
@GrowingUpBlue
@GrowingUpBlue 3 года назад
Hi there! Thank you so much for watching my videos, I really appreciate the support! :) That's so exciting that you're getting a cattle dog of your own. Honestly, I don't have that helpful of an answer when it comes to wildlife. We live in a small city, and the closest Rocket and Bindi have come to "wildlife" are with squirrels, birds, and rabbits. lol. But, for recall training we play a "come" game. Two people stand on opposite sides of the yard and take turns yelling the "come" command with the dog running back and forth. Reward with a high value treat when they successfully come (we use string cheese). After a few times, you'll see them get the hang of the game and just start running back and forth between the two people to get treats. Switch up the order of who is saying the command, and only reward if the command was actually said. It's a game of breaking their habit/prediction, keeping them on their toes, and making sure that they actually are listing for the word "come". I hope that helps and makes sense! :)

@@GrowingUpBlue Hello Zoe, thanks so much for your advice on the recall game. We will definitely give it a try! Three more sleeps until we get Tilly. We are so excited! @@GrowingUpBlue Hello Zoe. Yes, we have her! As you did, we had a long drive to pick her up, but with the kids in the back with her she did great! It was perfect timing because it has been spring break here, so Tilly has always had someone around to entertain and house train her. She is such a little joy. We are so excited to get her out on adventures, that sometimes we forget that she is only 8 weeks old. He have been tiring her out quite a bit! I think in a month that will flip on us. Haha! We have been socializing her lots in this week and a half that we have had her. She has met 20 dogs, 30 people, geese, ducks, cats, guinea pigs etc. We have also been bringing her to puppy socials, and my daughter and her will start going to puppy training this month as well. We are really trying to front-load the training and socialization early in her life. My one concern is, starting next week I will be back to work, and the kids will be back to school. I’m afraid that it will be a shock for her spending time alone. She has not shown much interest in chew toys yet, but I’m hoping she will soon to help with these lonely times. If you are interested in seeing pictures of little Tilly, I think you are already following her on Instagram. My daughter Nikita has set it up. Thanks for making your awesome videos, can’t wait for the next one!

@@timangeloni1 That is so exciting! I'm so happy for you and your family! And WOW! You're doing amazing with the socialization! Definitely more animals than Rocket and Bindi have met! That's awesome that you're trying to front-load the training and socialization. Honestly, I wish we would've done that better with Rocket. Tilly is so cute in all her Instagram pictures, she looks like such a little adventurer! I hope that going back to work/school wasn't too much of a shock for her. I have a feeling that because she's still so young it'll be easy for her to get into the routine. As always, I love hearing from you guys!

What tricks and tips did you use for the nipping? Daisy is 9 weeks and she is nips and it’s almost in a reactive way. She gets tired it does it a lot then. Or when she plays. I don’t think she means it to be mean but I want to nip it in the butt before it gets worse. Thanks.

Grab their mouth and swear at them. Swearing sends a tone of irritation that they pick up on and respond to. They are not stupid, they will catch on but you gotta be firm.

@samcochran7024

That’s what I’ve landed on doing! She answered my q about not having a fenced yard. We have a yard but it is surrounded by trees instead of a fence. I’m getting the freedom pet supply areal cable run to put in between two trees and then he will have access to most of the yard that way! I don’t plan to use this to keep him out there for hours and hours and NEVER alone when we aren’t home. But it will be nice to put him out on it so he can do his potty business and get some fresh air or run around a bit while I do yard work ect... and of course I still plan on taking him on walks daily and hikes and all the places where he can run and play fetch and frisbee and herding ball...I think it will work out!
