This is an upgrade I have been wanting to make for the longest time, but kept putting it off with some many other upgrades taking priority. I wanted to give my POV if a high engagement mountain bike hub is worth it and if it's an upgrade you can tell a big difference in.

Thank you for one of the best explanations of why a high engagement hub works best over the technical stuff

Love the sound of the high engagement. Hate the feeling of pedal kickback that comes with it

5:30 I use a Timberbell, it has a switch, I put it on when it's risky fast downhills or risky of people popping out or scaring people. The switch is easy to disable the bell, and it stays in place. But I agree not a pleasant sound, But i guess you can edit out the bell. But a bell is required by law, so I have to have one on the bike in Norway. Loud hubs won't help much in Norway during the winter as they will get quieter, I've not tried these, but Pro 4 and DT Swiss 350 get silent in -10C, even using oil instead of grease.

I put an Onyx on my Bronson V3. Instant engagement also. Definitely agree- helps a lot with slow speed tech, the moves you need to make are much easier without the damn pedals moving under you and the immediate movement when you put the power down is awesome.

Verrrry nice on techical climbs, you can be a lot more precise. Your bike is looking good, Lyrik fork 👍

Great upgrade ! I9 are great, but for your next build I would highly recommend Onyx Vespers with infinite engagement and silent.

I’ve seen a lot of bikers with those! They’re really nice too! I’m one of those that loves a loud hub, haha. 🤪

I really want the Hydro, my current hubs have 108 points of engagement but the Hydros have 690! I bet they are LOUD too!

Omg, haha! Absolutely did not mean for it to sound like that! I’ve just put in so much thought to every upgrade I’ve done on my bike. I wanted to be able to go with what I thought would be the best fit for me.

Just a heads up, I saw Chicken Sendies's video on the Hydra hub. I don't know if you got a rear hub with the upgraded axle, but first axles could snap, the new one has a longer cone shape in the middle, and a spacer, unless they changed it again. I don't know. But they made it beefier. But If it's recent stock it's likely the upgraded hub.

36 points of engagement is sufficient for non racers, 54 is really nice and 108 is all you will ever need. Anything more than that is an absolute waste of money and pure ego pump for people who don't race professionally. If someone can't get up tech climb ...trust me, it's not due to poor hub eng.

Having a high engagement hub isn’t really going to help shave off time for racers. The benefit of one really does come into play with techy sections.

1 2nd Morgan; very important during techy climbs or moves

I will have to agree with Morgan. I have a 108 hub and it’s perfect on my supercaliber. In my Hightower I have a hydra. It does make it a bit different to ride tech climbs to have that instant engagement. No it’s not mandatory but if you can afford it it does change your ride quality. Same could be said about the xtr shifter, yes it’s identical to the xt shifter but man is xtr so precise. Now I do the occasional xc races and I can climb with any hub you give me, I just like how it rides.

I'm not really into loud hubs at all and was looking at Onyx but I was thinking the same thing in that ppl can hear you coming with i9s. I've had a couple of close calls in the last couple of weeks.

I weigh 230 pounds and ride a 60 pound ebike. I fly though rock gardens and love to get wheels off the ground. I've thought about carbon wheels, but im not sure how long they would last. Hope you enjoy yours.

Im 98ish kg/220ish lbs and I ride aluminum rims with cushcore pro inserts. If I was lighter, say, 150lbs id totally go carbon but nooope im not going to risk it
