What is a lab grown sapphire? What is a lab created sapphire? What is a synthetic sapphire? Are lab created sapphires and synthetic sapphires real or fake? Can you tell if a sapphire is natural or has been grown in a lab? Lab created sapphires were first created in the late 1800s. They are corundum so they are real sapphires. However you can tell that they were grown in a lab. Natural sapphires are more desirable and more valuable than lab grown sapphires. Join jewelry designer Jill Maurer as she discusses lab grown sapphires.

Love my lab grown purple sapphire! It even color shifts, which is such a sweet bonus. Grateful to have been able to get a 4 carat round stone for a much better price than a natural would have been and to be able to eliminate the mining factor.

The same applies to emeralds. I have a natural emerald ring in 18K and lab grown emerald stud earrings in 14K. Honestly, I like the lab grown better because like you say in your video, the stones are perfect. The color is much more vivid and saturated. The lab grown stones are also flawless, while the natural emerald has inclusions.

I was thinking about lab-grown gems vs. naturally occurring ones as an ethical choice. I never thought much about how any minerals are mined until I saw a documentary on the production of natural mica. Eye-opening. Don't know anything about the treatment of gem miners but it's worth the time to research.

I’m having trouble with the idea of lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds. I know that they are identical to a real diamond and even though I’m being told they are real as well, I feel like it’s the process that makes them fake. Is it like a cz or a moissanite? I want to know that if im spending money on a lab grown diamond, it’s not just considered real but it is real. Please help me understand.

Ok for the uninitiated - if you are looking for sapphire of high quality 1/2 to 1 ct if both are real and like diamonds the best quality (say as a duel linking to a main diamond of 5ct . I know colour is a major factor but are there other ways to tell if either stone is are classed as flawless

And people are willing to pay $2 million for a RICHARD mille sapphire watch. Completely synthetic. I could not give a rats ass that it cost money to make it and then it’s hard to make it still not worth that money. I know I went off the beaten path of the subject but I just had to put my two cents in LOL. I just was reading today that one of his new sapphire Watches is selling for $2,600,000 absolutely insane to pay that money for a lab created sapphire

SAFIRAS PRODUZIDAS EM LAB. SÃO AS MESMAS ENCONTRADAS NA NATUREZA SÓ COM UMA DIFERENÇA ELAS NÃO CONTEM AS IMPUREZAS OU SUJEIRAS DO PROCESSO DE FORMAÇÃO NA NATUREZA OU SEJA AS INCLUSÕES, DESTA FORMA SAFIRAS SINTÉTICAS OU CÓRINDON PARA MIM SÃO MUITO MAIS BONITAS E SE PODE OBTELAS DE MUITAS FORMAS DE CORES COMO VERMELHO RUBI , SAFIRA INCOLOR , SAFIRA AZUL.

Fake to me, is coloured glass & the like being passed off as something else. If at its base its chemical & mineral components are the same as something ripped from the earth, then i view it as real... it just had the added advantage of being grown in a manner that allows its potential for perfection to show.

After 37 years of being a cutter this question has always been a hot topic, but if it is chemically and physically and optically the same regardless of it being too perfect it has to be classed as a real Sapphire even when grown in a laboratory, nature produces a lot of nice things but sometime man can improve on it, take clay for instance. we turn it into pottery and brick and make beautiful homes out of it, nature can't do that.

Great question! I've wondered this about other stones. My guess would be that if the chemical composition is the same then they are real, the only difference is the process by which they are made. Kind of like an LV bag being made in France vs the USA. Same thing, different origin. I wonder if there are other differences, though, and you did explain that here in the case of sapphires. Another great video, Jill!
@JillMaurer
@JillMaurer 4 года назад
There are more differences than that. The two Louis Vuitton bags would both be handmade and much more similar to each other. The difference between a natural sapphire and a manmade sapphire are more like the differences between a natural river and lazy river at a water park. That's not exactly fair, but it isn't that far off. xoxo

The most important question as a buyer is do you like it, it is a sapphire then its just a question of if you like it or not, do you want to pay the premium for natural does it even matter to you? For me i could not care less if it came from the ground or a lab, a stone is a stone is a stone, if it has the same properties as its natural counterpart ill gladly take the massive savings from buying a lab grown

To my surprise, I thought you’d be wearing blue for your sapphire video. What will you wear for your emerald video?😉 I’ve loved sapphires for a very long time. My first important set of jewelry was sapphire. Too many stones are so dark that you can’t see that beautiful blue color shining through. The good stones remind me of the ocean.💙

Thank you as a jeweller I wanted other opinions on this subject, and you answered the question without any bias what so ever. I have listened to and heard the arguments about Lab created gems and natural gems. Most are bias without giving any real facts. In most cases a lab created stone is the same as a natural stone only one is created naturally in the ground and another in a lab. The materials the stone consist of are the same. A lab grown sapphire is still a sapphire while it may not be as desirable as a natural sapphire. They can be flawless or not, and just as beautiful as natural made ones. I have many gems, sapphires, rubies and emeralds to name a few. I own both natural and lab created. The reason I have both is not every customer is a millionaire and can afford a 50,000 dollar natural sapphire on a piece of jewellery. But I can sell them an exact duplicate of the same sapphire just as flawless and just as beautiful that is lab created for a much, much more affordable piece of jewellery that will look like and not cost the same as a natural created stone would and the customer is still getting the gem they wanted. Not some fake piece of glass that are truly out there as well. I have a few of those too that I keep for reference material when educating folks. I have some very beautiful sapphires both natural and lab created. But still they are all sapphires. The only difference is cost. Thank you again.

What if a store claims it real but lab grown only? How much is the price difference? I'm interested about this...Thanks a lot for bringing it up! xoxo
@JillMaurer
@JillMaurer 4 года назад
It's hard to define the price difference because it greatly changes depending on the quality of a natural stone. If the jeweler sells it to you as a natural sapphire be sure to get them to note that on the receipt. Then take it to an appraiser who had nothing to do with the sale and ask them to identify the stone and appraise the piece. Hope that helps. xoxo

Very interesting video! I received a ring with a sapphire recently, which is supposedly from 1880 and I went to get it appraised. However, I have received mixed messages as to whether the sapphire is synthetic or natural - the vintage store which I bought it from claims it to be real, one of the jewelers here in Sweden said it was natural as well, while another claims it to be synthetic. Do you have any advice on what I can do to know for sure whether it is synthetic or natural? Thankful for a response :)
@JillMaurer
@JillMaurer 4 года назад
This sounds so frustrating! I would take it to a certified gemologist not affiliated with where you purchased the stone and see what they say. If it is very important to know, you can also send the stone to the GIA and they can give you a definitive answer. xoxo
