Is a Spider's Web a Part of Its Mind? | Deep Look

Orb weaver spiders build exquisite spiral webs not only to catch insects, but to extend their senses. Once they shrink-wrap their prey with silk, the nearly blind spiders can store them for later, and read their web's strands as a kind of memory map to guide them back.

DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) wildlife and nature series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
---
The more than 48,000 spider species create a wide variety of web styles. There are over 4,000 different species of orb weaver spiders alone; these are the eight-legged spinners that create the famous spiral-shaped webs.
Anyone who’s watched orb weavers in action has seen them use their exquisite creations to deftly ensnare flying insects. Impressive as this, the webs function as much more than deadly traps.
Webs play an integral role in everything an orb weaver does. When spiders are hungry, they can tighten the web’s strands and even adjust its size and shape, depending on what size of prey they’re in the mood for. These species are only able to see light, dark and a little movement, but they are somehow able to quickly navigate their webs, pinpointing their unlucky victims and binding them in silk, a meal saved for later.
Because they can do so much with such tiny brains, some researchers think orb weavers use their webs as a form of extended cognition, outsourcing advanced mental tasks like problem-solving and memory. For example, once they have killed and wrapped their prey, a spider can store it for later, then easily find it again. They don’t need to remember every single thread they have spun - just a few previous steps. By using their webs to do some of their thinking for them, orb weavers may be preserving precious brain power for other necessary and complex tasks like capturing prey.
--- Where do orb weavers spiders live?
Orb weaver species live everywhere on planet earth except for Antarctica and the Arctic. As long as there is abundant food (i.e. insects) and a place to build their web, you are likely to find an orb weaver.
--- What other kinds of spider webs are there besides orb webs?
In addition to the signature spiral-shaped designs made by orb weavers, spider webs come in various other styles, such as tangles (aka cobwebs), funnels and sheets.

link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10071-017-1069-7 Here's the research! Essentially spiders can do so much with a very small brain because the spiders brain isn't doing the calculating, cognition and hard mental tasks. Instead the spider uses the web to do the brunt of the processing and thus its central nervous system can respond to the web and act, rather than process information and calculate where to go etc. A good analogy would be how humans outsource a lot of our brains processing power to computers. Essentially computers can be thought of as an extension of human cognition in this theoretical framework.

@@solchapeau6343 I mean I have to agree with you of course, there is no actual processing going on. I think of it as a sort of 'proxy' processing. While no calculations are done by the web itself, the neural load of the spider is lessened as a result of the web simplifying tasks. Possibly the ultimate distinction here is a semantic one, that is: does a tool that can have neural tasks offloaded to it count as a neural extension? That's more philosophy than science though haha.

Random fact that is probably not important to you: I have a tiny spider who I rescued from our bathroom and I named it Pepsi. We feed him ants and I love him :) Update: Pepsi is doing great and has shed his skin 2 times I think! He is a big boi now! Also I found another spider at the exact same spot that he was in! I think I'm going to name that one Arachne :) Sad update: After about half a year together, Pepsi passed away. I just went to feed him, and he was dead. I think he died because of old age, but I'm really sad. Arachne is gone too, although they died a few weeks after I started feeding them. I hope they rest in piece.

I really love Deep Look’s content, but today’s video made me a bit unhappy, the title suggests that the main topic would be about why the web of a spider and the research behind the reasoning. But the actual video talks a lot about spiders in general and their webs, not why the web is an extension of their brain. Love the quality of the content, and the channel too, but I’ll leave a dislike because of the misconception on the title
@holylightbulb
@holylightbulb 3 года назад
It makes sense, based on your reasoning, why you would press the dislike button on the video. But, as with every animal, it's important to have an introduction into the functions of a structure before the deeper point is discussed. In addition, there's no way to thoroughly support the hypothesis of the spider web being an extension of its mind as of yet because scientists don't have enough information to draw this conclusion. It's not necessarily a misconception, it's just a lack of information. So, although the point was only discussed briefly, there's not much further to talk about in the video.

Scrolling down... Don't mind me. I'll just eat some bread sticks and hummus while I listen... I find REAL hard to believe that the web is a part of their minds. AFAIK, spider webs don't have any sort of internet nervous system. I think it's easier to assume their mental mapping skills come from place cells, neurons that fire when either the animal or a nearby object is in a certain location, or an invertebrate place cell analog. Place cells are fascinating.

You guys bring information on these wonderful creatures we live with such charm, It's caused me to lose my irrational fear of them! I don't go out of my way to kill them in my house like I used to. I just imagine their cute little faces when I see them and wave at them or check them out since they're quite curious. I found out I have a lot of jumping spiders in my house, so a double bonus on the cute! Thank you guys so much for what you do!!

I was really confused about the "extended cognition" thing and so I looked it up. Is it sort of like a web is like a diary or computer of info for the spider? Any help on this would be appreciated, didn't know this was an area of research. For the first time this PBS video leaves me feeling unsatisfied with its theme. I love the delivery and the production is amazing as always, but I feel like I've been left on a cliffhanger, at least you left some sources for me.

When I went on patrol at my security job, I would have to walk by a long, tall fence. It was so cool to see the hundreds of spider webs glimmering in the moonlight attached to the top of the fence. Even if I am afraid of spiders. 😬
