Thanks for sharing. I'm a late departure myself (32 lol) working on my PPL right now and just had my first couple flights with an instructor this week. I'm not feeling super confident about the instructor I ended up with at the moment.. I feel I need to give it a few more lessons to really make my mind up but it's a bit disheartening to feel unsure about the person teaching you to fly haha... I'm determined to keep studying and working hard even if that means taking some time off from flying until i find an instructor that works for me. Your videos give me some hope and inspiration especially hearing that you also have overcome challenges with instructors in the past. Looking forward to following more of your journey!

Hey Moff! I'm so happy to hear that you felt inspired! I'm actually going to be starting to do some podcast-style videos over the upcoming months and one of the things I wanted to cover was instructors since they make or break your training (as you're experiencing right now!). Always remember though, you're the customer so you have every right to request to fly with a different instructor. Also, keep your spirits up, flying is a LOT harder than it looks, especially flying well. One of my instructors a long time ago said "flying is like painting a picture, it takes time, finesse, practice, and expertise, everyone gets there at some point" and I gotta say even after around 300 hours I still don't feel like I'm anywhere close to there yet, but I'm still giving it my all!

@@LateDeparture hey thanks for the reply! And for the words of encouragement. I've definitely tempered my expectations of myself now that I've been flying a little over a month. I'm working hard on improving everyday even when I can't fly while at the same time realizing this is going to be a life long learning experience so i also have to be patient with myself while continuing to gain experience. Good news is after sitting down with my instructor and voicing my concerns and what I need as a student things have been awesome and I actually feel really grateful to have the instructor I have! Looking forward to seeing whatever new content you create while following your journey. Thanks for inspiration!

Hello Adam. I was an early departure at 18, but I'm now struggling to stay current with my PPL at 60. The pandemic really messed things up for me trying to stay current. When do you think you'll be finished your instructor rating? I could use an instructor at YAV, or I could commute to CKK7. Either way, I need to get updated on a bunch of stuff. I like your story. I like your style.

Thank you Wayne! I totally get that, the pandemic was brutal for everything! It looks like I'll be done my instructor rating around March of 2023 or so, feel free to drop me an e-mail and I can keep you up to date on everything! Thank you for joining me on my late departure (although I'm jealous of your early one, haha)

Oooh yes, the instructors are a big topic, especially when you cannot choose to change it, great history Adam, I started at 33 years old “same thought” never too late, I spent three years to get my PPL, CPL, IFR Rating and MCC & ELT Airbus A320 course in Chile (long run because I had to study and work at the same time), ready to keep flying in my 36 in 2019, unfortunately, covid arrived, and it was impossible to get any opportunity in Chile between 2020 and 2022 (maybe small market), now in my 39, I came to Vancouver a couple of months ago due to my wife studies, and I don´t know if it is too late to start a CPL conversion process and try to keep my dreams alive.. is not easy this passion (time, money, opportunities, etc) … by the moment I enjoy your videos... any advice to find a place in Vancouver where ask for foreign CPL conversion and Flight Instructor rating???

Hey German, It's great that you want to keep your dream alive! Unfortunately (or fortunately for me!) I moved to Manitoba to continue my flight training. My current school, Harv's Air, definitely does foreign license conversions, but since I'm not in Vancouver anymore I don't know about any of the schools there, sorry =(
