This is an excellent review. ... I’ll just say, however, I’ve been in the ergonomic field for 40 years. I have worked extensively with, for example, classical string musicians with severe pain & dysfunction of the arms and hands. I saved a LOT of professional musical careers that would have ended due to so much pain in their arms & hands. ... For ME, these trackballs from Logitech are TOTALLY stress and tension reducing. Yet I can see where they would need some getting used to for SOME people. But the fact is the “reversible thumb” is designed to do a wide range of motions, whereas the wrists and other fingers are not. So I highly recommend giving these devices a try. But give it some time to adapt. ... A world class violinist who switches to a viola (almost identical except for a small size difference) can suffer quite a a lot of stress and pain for a period of time, even though there is very little difference in the instruments except being in little larger. But because their neuromuscular system is so used to one VERY precise pattern of movement, switching to an instrument that only requires a slight change in reach when playing is enough to trigger an sense of unfamiliarity, which can trigger a pain pattern. (The nervous system loves familiarity, and hates unfamiliarity.) For some people, even slight deviations of movement can produce a pain pattern even though NO real damage is actually occurring. So, don’t give up too soon if you try this device.
Violist (and decades-long Logitech trackball user) here. I think part of the trouble is also the viola music itself, which is somewhat different from the violin repertory. Particularly in larger ensemble, there's a lot of repeating patterns.
Definitely takes some getting used to, and I've discovered over the years that many people, when they try a mouse like this, simply don't adjust its settings appropriately for their needs. Just tweaking the pointer speed and trying it with and without the enhanced pointer precision in Windows can make a big difference. But it mostly just takes time to get used to. There's no way you're gonna just plug it in and it's going to feel right for you. Probably need a minimum of a week of regular usage before it starts to feel somewhat natural to use. For me, it's awkward when I go back to using a traditional mouse: too much moving around, and too easy to swing my camera in completely wrong directions when I'm playing a game. Plus I often play on my couch or bed and that can be difficult with a regular mouse. :)
I concur, switching to a trackball is a very different experience. My dad used one for a long time and whenever I worked on his computer I had to adjust myself. Ended up getting one for myself, and now I’m looking at this one to put in my bag for travel use. I think even for people who won’t have Windows and use an alternate OS (Linux or macOS) should consider dialing in the settings, it will really help. I’m also keen to try this with my iPad, since on that platform there isn’t much adjustment to be made.
I have both MX ERGO and ERGO M575. One is in my office and another is for home. As a 3D modeler, I really would like to recommend tracking ball mouses for people who have a workflow that heavily relies on mouse. It feels weird to use at the beginning, but after a couple of hours you will get used to it. Before I use a tracking ball mouse, my arm and the joint between my arm and palm could easily feel pain, nonetheless this problem was all solved by the tracking ball mouse like a magic. Now I can sit and work for hours without feeling the pain.
@@EddieGooch I don't know if you've made your purchase yet, I have an M575 now, had the MX ergo. If either is going to be a desktop solution for you, I recommend the MX ergo with the caveat that the MX ergo uses a micro USB for charging. The adjustable angle is worth it. If it's a mobile solution, the M575. The battery life is long enough that it won't be a problem, 20 months on low-energy Bluetooth, or a full 24 months on the USB receiver.
If this is your first time experiencing a trackball, then it really is understandable if you are struggling with it esp with precision pointing. Trackball does takes time getting used to esp if you want to completely master it. For others, it's pure BS, for us who managed to love trackball and learned how to use minimal muscle effort, we LOVE it :)
Well said, I think a review from a trackball first timer should always consider that notion. Honestly I have no patience for people passing quick judgements on trackball devices like this. I stopped watching mid-video

Thank you very much if you can give your feedback, as I'm looking to invest in a trackball for my laptop (I like and really dominate the trackpad) since certain functions a trackpad can't do, whether it's playing games or spending hours with one cross bone over the other lollll :D (I'm Brazilian, I hope my English is understandable)
@@claudiojunior1853 her statement regarding the thumb wearing out is a very good example of a beginner or new to trackballs, you'd might experienced that at first but in time and with enough exposure or experience using it, you'd eventually realized that you really don't need to exert much effort when using a trackball :)
@@claudiojunior1853 You can use a normal mice and trackball at the same time. So that so you can make your hands take turns to rest. For me that is, normal mice on my left, trackball on my right, and keyboard in the middle.
The M570 is my daily driver, so it's great to see this new one covered. I love the feel of a trackball but after a few years I can safely say the thumb-based positioning leaves something to be desired. I've been having more pain in my thumb and lower hand, so to hear an OT address this is really helpful. I think I'll check out the vertical mouse or a finger-based trackball. I also wish they had included a hardware DPI switch like a lot of trackballs now on the market. Thanks for making an honest review.
I've been using the original M570 for over 5 years now. I have a technique for using it that reduces thumb fatigue. I hover my wrist above the desktop, and I move my hand around a little bit as I control the ball with my thumb. I tried the MX Ergo, but I returned it because its grippy surface made it harder to slide my hand around.
I've been using 570's and Ergo for over a decade now. I have two other "regular" mice that I very occasionally try using for one reason or the other, but it seems like too much effort after a while, all that moving about, ha ha. These trackballs just take time to get use to, and not just a few days, and you have to experiment a little with what settings work best for you. With the Logitech's, in Windows, a cursor speed of 12 is ideal for me, striking the right balance between speed and smoothness, with "Enchanced pointer precision" checked.
Had my first computer job 62 years ago. When PCs first showed up, I had my first mouse. It was obviously the "standard" configuration. As I grew older, I began to experience hand tremors. I was diagnosed with essential tremors. At that point, it became very difficult to control my mouse. The trackball mouse was a life saver. I have gone through a number of them and have just ordered the latest Logitech version.
@Wade Smith: reminds me of the car mechanics who used to remove over-tightened wheels using wrenches (no pneumatic those days) and had to give jab with the underside of the palm to loosen nuts. Over time some developed issues with wrist and had to resort to office duties
I have been using this mouse for over 15 years I am a 62 yr old lady who has been in two car accidents with neck issues. I still work 40 to 70 hours a week in Autocad and Excell. Could not work those hours without a trackball mouse. I do not always leave mouse on table top, I tie the mouse to my hand with rubber band or hair tie mouse will work in the air, rested on your leg, held behind your head! Anywhere you can click it! No need to keep it flat on table too to make it work!
I had a severe pain in my arm and shoulder with a Apple mouse in just a couple of days and it went to the storage. The pain vanished after I switched to Logitech M570. Using it since nearly 7 years. No fatigue as you said. No issues with smaller movements of cursor especially doing some CAD work and things after using it for a few days.
from my experience, trackpad is actually the most ergonomics because our hands does not forced to stay horizontally. Since our middle finger is longer, it becomes the pointer and when you rest the palm it naturally want to rest on right, then since your ring finger is shorter, when you want to apply double touch for right click, your hand automatically making a 45 degree angle. So the take way here is to use the right corner of your middle and ring finger.
This is the best review i have found on the M575. I liked that she explained the benefits and the realistic expecation that it can take some time to get used to it which was my experience. Also she went into the software which none of the other reviews did. I also go the logi K860 keyboard which also takes some time to get used to. I like them both. If you have to do precise editing, then have an alternate mouse to do that with
Thanks for a really informative review. I am a Logitech Trackball fan (any model) for a few decades. I think I have the first one I ever bought that still works. The trick is to remember that the keys and other buttons on what we use don't need a heavy touch. I already had carpel tunnel before I ever used it. It has helped me not get worse. I am administrative assistant/typist - it saved my hands. Again, thanks for the lesson on occupational therapy.

I started using thumb trackballs back in high school (I'm now in my late 40s). I use them for gaming and for work. For me, they're all about convenience and space-saving. Ergonomics is, as you say, all about the individual.

I work on my computer for multiple hours per day (8-10 hrs/day 5-6 days per week on average), My Occupational therapist advised me to have at least 2 mice or even better 3, offering different positions. and change mice every 3 hrs. also to change mice when I am standing vs seated, I got the master 3, the m575 and a Anker vertical mouse. Been working great so far.
I've been using logitech thumb trackball for over 2 decades. Yes since they first launched. I also went through a handful of mouse and touch pads as well as tablets. Half of my work on the computer is on photo editing. I can only say that it takes a bit of time to get the hang of controling the curser wtg your thumb. For general use the model that ypu are reviewing will do well, but for high presion works, you'll need the more pricy MX ERGO model. That tb came with a resolution button. It toggles between normal resolution and fine resolution where normal will be like any trackball and in fine resolution the cursor move slowly and smoothly. I have one in the office and one at home. Highly recomended.
I am using MX Ergo for 2,5 years (it's more premium version of this trackball) and I can't recommend the thing enough! I am feeling very weird using regular mice, and the best thing is that you don't need a lot of space for it - heck, you can operate it from your lap or something if you wish. So definitely reccomend everyone to at least try trackballs, and this one is really affordable, which is a great bonus!
@@saepiumv3813 actually, not, nothing like that. If I'm very aggressive with my movements, my thumb gets fatigued a little, but that is to be expected - that's it.
After having pain using a regular mouse, I switched to a trackball for thumb about 25 years ago. Never had a problem again but the funny thing is when a friend tries my mouse, they can't use it. They really have a hard time with it. It's a big adjustment at first but after a while, normal mouses feel stupid in your hand. The normal mouse is just dumb, takes up too much real-estate, and constantly needs repositioning to get the cursor to move across the screen. I can put the trackball on my leg or a chair arm or anywhere and not have to worry about moving it. Having someone give so little time to what is the best mouse design by far is what I consider to be a bad review. It takes time but you will not go back. It's just that much better.
I can relate to that, I switched to a Logitech M570 about 5 years ago after I got to the point where I could hardly work with a mouse anymore, it's been a life saver. I switched to the MX Ergo shortly after and I actually prefer it a lot over the M570 because it feels a bit larger and fits my hand better. Took me about a week to get the hang of it which was quicker than I expected although it's still not great for certain applications like FPS games and drawing. Funny thing is, I have a normal mouse connected to my PC for 'guests' at work (i.e. the IT team), but they're always too proud to use it and struggle on with the trackball, lol. Also find it convenient that I don't need to move the trackball around my messy desk to use it.

A great advantage to trackballs is saving desk space. It really makes a lot difference since you don't need a mousepad. Can't go back to normal mice unless I really need precision like when im gaming.
Couple months ago, I switched from an older model of this trackball to a gaming mouse. I am happy with the change. Although I used the trackball for many many years and this newer version I am sure will be great for quite a few people.
I have been using Logitech thumb trackballs for (not kidding) nearly 30 years starting with the Logitech Trackman. I have no effects from using it in my thumb, forearms, or anywhere else. I have 3 of them for the 3 computers I use. They have a more expensive ERGO one that pivots which is probably more comfortable. It is difficult at first with precise movements but you will adjust to it. I am a photographer and use it for photoshop editing without issues. The only thing I can't recommend this for is gaming if you are into that a standard precision mouse would be better.
Repeat for emphasis; use thumb and index finger on the ball (simultaneously) and your middle and 4th finger will naturally rest on the L/R buttons. Try it !

I have been using thumb trackball devices for over 20 years. This is because I initially was working on an extremely narrow work station that did not afford a lot of room to use a regular mouse. I have never encountered the issues described in this video. i guess I am lucky.
Betty...the queen of THOCC! Thank you so much for your very informed professional analysis. I have the M570 and my experience is similar. I have found that you can improve the precision by adjusting the pointer speed in your mouse setup, but that comes at the expense of more thumb movement and fatigue. For some things the trackball works well, but not for everyday use IMHO unless you want to use it in conjunction with a normal mouse.
Long time M570 user. I had similar thumb pain the first 2 month in. I kept using it and haven't had any pain for the past 4 years. I like the bigger form factor of the M575, meanwhile comparing to the M570 which is usually 25-30 dollars, unless the internals of the M575 is better, at least I'm not sold on it. The M570 is cheaply made, but once you swap out both microswitches, it will last for years.
I swaped my switches with 20M Omron ones and I have been using it for 4 years too. One drop of WD40 for each switch will help your switches may works over their rated durability.
I find it sad that Logitech doesn't make a left handed version of this trackball. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I've been with them for years but all they recommend for me are ambi mice. C'mon Logitech, think about us lefties.
Try L-Trac. I am right handed and I can use the L-Trac fairly well with my left hand. I actually use a Logitech Vertical and when my right hand gets tired I switch to my left hand and use the L-Trac.
I m using Ergo M570 since 5 years and I dont event think about changing it. It solved my hand pain since a second I switched and the issue has NEVER came back. As you said it is a very personal choice and I'm lucky to fit this solution. I wish that everone will get aware what works for them because the classical models with long usage can be very harmful (linking with what you explain at the begining).
About two years ago, the mouse buttons started to fail. The metal components used in the buttons are of very low quality. I had to buy a cheap mouse in an emergency, and more than two years later, it still works. However, I do miss the ergonomics of the trackball mouse.
I just got one of these recently and have to agree with the point about the thumb fatigue. I also have issues with the overall hand shape, which in my case causes an additional problem: constant accidental right clicks. If I simply relax my hand with it resting on the mouse, I right click. So to avoid that, I have to consciously lift my middle finger upwards to avoid it... which obviously is extremely uncomfortable. Not for me.
I've tried all kinds of trackballs and nothing beats the old Logitech trackman marble FX with X-Mouse buttons software to map the middle button to scrolling.
If you have Windows, you can go in and manually adjust your mouse sensitivity settings. Precision pointing has less to do with the mouse itself, and more to do with your level of control and your sensitivity settings. If it's your first time using a trackball, it makes sense that you wouldn't like the precision. It takes some getting used to. Just keep using it and adjust your mouse sensitivity as needed until it works for you.

Great review. I have been looking to swap to a trackball for a while now, but still not taken the plunge. I think, after watching the review I might still keep with my regular mouse. I have been using mice for over 10 years now and, honestly, I have never had anything hurting from using the mouse. I sometimes use the mouse for over 12 hours a day ( I suffer with really bad insomnia,) and, as I said it never gives me any problems. Maybe I am one of the lucky ones.
I think the real appeal for this mouse would be the ability to move the cursor without moving the mouse itself. So that means this mouse could be used on any surface. So maybe you have a setup in your bedroom, leaving room, or maybe outside (on-sight somewhere) that a proper mouse would not function as well with nomal arm movement. It seemed odd to focus the reason on why you would buy this mouse becuase of pain caused buy using a standard mouse.
Give a look at Perixx's Perimice-520. It's cheaper and slightly bigger than the M570/M575 but even more confortable as it comes with magnetic stands to adjust the hight and angle (a bit like Logitech MX Ergo). You can find it in either a wired or wireless version and I greatly suggest the wired one as I don't really see the point in wasting money on batteries or having to deal with finicky wireless connections for something that's supposed to stay put on your desk without ever moving. Also the ball is the Peripro-303 which is exactly the same size as the one in the M570/M575 and my go-to replacement for Logitech ones when they wear out.
The first time I tried a trackball 15 years ago i absolutely hated it but they are now a life saver! It definitely takes some getting used to and even trying a couple different brands. What you said about this particular trackball I completely agree with - it easily moves across the screen but has some difficulty when you need to be accurate or precise. I've tried another trackball with the opposite issue - hard to move across the screen but very accurate when precision is needed. Anyway the main takeaway from your video and using them over the last week is that there is a tradeoff, accuracy for comfort/ergonomics, which at this point in my life I am able to take a chance on them, and so far it has paid off! I just need an ergo keyboard but I'll let my brain master the trackball first LOL Great video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and opinion!
570 is my daily driver... Gonna have to disagree a bit.. Using a mouse you run into issues with folks using their wrists vs their elbow or full arm. Full arm will negate any rsi issues, but most people get lazy and get wrist issues because they only use the wrist to mouse. The track ball, at least the m570, supports my hand in a natural position. A perfectly vertical position isn't your bodies natural position any more than perfectly flat, the hand, when by your side, is at about a 45 degree angle. I dunno about the 575, but the 570 allows for that same close to 45 degree position. That 575 has adjustable dpi... did you try upping that when you were trying to do precision work? The thumb.. was it stress OR was it lack of use and now using it pain (trust me, I know that pain, I'm doing PT now from an ORIF surgery). You don't use the thumb like that often.. so you're working muscles you didn't work before. I use it 8 hours a day, and still on the original battery from about 2018...

I had the accuracy problem with my M570 as well but that problem is completely gone with my Kensington Orbit mouse. The centered balls tend to be more accurate in fine-tuned motions as per my experience.
Thank you for your review. I bought the Logi m650 equipped with the new usb dongle "Bolt" Beside that it is a Bluetooth Mouse. I have a logi keyboard too running "BOLT" But strangely enough both devices runs best on basic Bluetooth. The Bolt receiver interferes with other Bluetooth devices like a loud speaker and induces fault. Drop "Bolt" and stick with the clean Bluetooth options.
Very interesting. I find having a wider stance with my arms (due to using a full size keyboard) helps obviate stress on my wrists and thumb as they're more in line with my elbows. (You need a decent sized desk to do this.) It's for that reason that I'm considering a split ergo keyboard. I wonder if tactile switches for mice will become a topic of interest in future?

Happy to see you again. In na case I have the old M570 and the Logi MX Ergo. The second one has a better adjustable working position that may help you feeling more comfortable with it. Also you can switch the resolution via a switch for those not easy high precise small movement. I really like them a lot and in my case I just prefer using both of them more than any other mouse at home or office. Just carry the MX Ergo with me all the time. I guess should be a good choice to try the MX Ergo. If not possible, the vertical that you are using should do the magic for you. Is the same for the keyboards, mechanical are very adjustable to fine tune the feeling, but for me, split ortholinear are the way to go.
I use the M570 and a HHKB (which brings the right hand position closer than a full or TKL board). I tried also mousing with the left hand which alleviated some fatigue but caused other issues. I've suffered radial and ulnar pain and the best fix is to learn how to use the KB to achieve as many tasks as possible, learn to touch type, have the right desk height and set up the monitor to you can see at a reasonable distance. But this design does help at least with avoiding pronating the hand. I'm thinking of building a wooden wedge to increase the angle of the trackball.

Hi, I am looking at this mouse currently. I have used the previous M570. I bought one for work and ended up buying a couple for computers at home. There was definitely a learning curve for fine work but larger movements were intuitive. I did find some initial muscle pain but that soon settled down and I think it was due to using a different group of muscles and hand position. Having used it for several years I won’t go back to a non trackball.
I have been using this mouse since it was wired and had a red ball. I have been using each evolution of this mouse for 10-15 year? I can't even remember when the first one came out, but I have used nothing but this model of track ball since the first day of using it. BEST MOUSE EVER
I love my trackball. I use the m570 at work and then I got the m575 for myself to use at home and on the go. I prefer the trackball to a standard mouse for gaming as well.
Excellent video Betty. The wired version of this has been around for many years, pre-scroll wheel and forward/back buttons. This or the Marble trackman (not sure if this is still offered) were the Logitech options. Kensington also has a few variations but it's been a while since I had to support them at work.
My setup right now, an MX Ergo and an HHKB Hybrid Type-s in white snow and blank keycaps. Finally I am fully wire free (with airpods pro 2 finalizing the mic/speaker combo).
Nice and relatively comprehensive review. It took me personally about 2 days to get completely used to trackball. On the third I set it more precisely with "Set Point", which allows quite good customization. I have been using the M570 for almost a year. In my opinion, despite the manufacturer's claim, the M575 is a downgrade. I have a friend who bought an M575 and we exchanged them for a few days. We both get the impression that the 570 is more comfortable, although the difference is small, it exists. I'm sorry that logitech have this bad policy, instead of continuing their successful products, to "Upgrade" them. I have a K350 keyboard from the same manufacturer. Extremely comfortable and ergonomic, all my friends want one, but Logitech no longer offers it. Instead, they offer "upgrades" again, but none of my friends prefer them compared to the k350.
I think Logitech diversified towards the more expensive MX Ergo and the M575 - the former really feels like an upgrade from the 570: sturdy, high-quality materials, adjustable position, fine-adjust button, etc., while the M575 is its cheaper sister and feels flimsier than either the Ergo or the M570. I have both now, the Ergo at home and the M575 at the office.
If your hand gets tired you're using it wrong, I have it on 60% speed and feels fine 5 days into using it. 50% didn't feel great, but more speed somehow gives more control even for micro movements which shouldn't make sense but does.
I picked up one of these today unintentionally. I needed a new mouse and I saw this one with the trackball. Silly me thinking it was a combo type setup with the trackball and a regular laser mouse. Rather than just return it I was like it's worth a try. I can say right off the bat the precision movements are harder. I do a lot of video editing and graphics work so fast precise clicking is very important. I'm only been using it about an hour now so so I'll give it a couple days and see how it grows on me.
These are thoughtful insights. I currently use the M570 and I like it a lot - to the point I can't see myself using a regular mouse. That said, I am considering alternatives a split keyboard setup. While setting the trackball in the center seems like the choice, I wonder if there is any other pointing devices/multi touch/touchless that's worth trying (on that note, considering the Apple trackpad, but not sure what else is out there). So at first look seems good option, But question is that instead of carpal tunnel you get another thumb issues. So I am not sure if this really have some benefits. Yes best option to check and try.

It's funny, I always got crap about using for using a trackball for gaming. One I got used to it, I never wanted to go back to a standard mouse. Twitch memory is so much easier and frankly, I haven't played a game that twitch movements have mattered since I was younger.
I was hoping this would be my chance to not spend >100€ on the vertical to see if I can get rid of my pain that I've had for so long that it started from the wrist and is now on shoulder/neck. Thanks for the detailed review.

I have its predecessor, the M570. The switches behind the buttons are very poor quality on both my trackball and the replacement, the M575, and you'll be lucky, with daily use, to get more than 1 year out of a Duracell battery and 2 years out of the mouse. If you're prepared to spend £40.00 every two years on a mouse, then go for it.
I use this mouse I have been using such mice for a long time. I find them to work very well especially with the type of gaming I like. But like she said and I was so glad she brought it up. cause we are all different there is no one size fit's all. but that's also the great thing. with so many choices now out there everyone can find what actually works for them. Those that hate these types of mice I find either didn't give them a real chance or it was the wrong type a mouse for their physiology. So don't let all the hate these kinds of mice get sway you from it find what works for you over time.
I've used one of these mice before, they're certainly not for everyone, with these types of mice, if you use them for extended periods of time, your thumb muscles will get tired pretty fast, and may even trigger an old injury like in your case. but I would think it will be useful for someone that works in a small area that you can't use a normal mouse in because of the cluttered work environment or small workspace, Or as you said, people may use it to go around some sort of injury they have. love your videos btw :) And thanks for the detailed and extensive review (like always)
My problem was never the wrist issue I have is my ring finger "squeezing" a normal mouse which created ligament issues between the ring and pinky (very painful arthritic feeling). I've now tried several vertical mice and I still find my hand involuntarily squeezing to move it around/lift it for movement during day to day use. That's why I am now forced to use a trackball for work use at least since you never have to move it or lift it. Now just to find if finger or thumb is going to be the right way to go....
In my experience, it's key to disable mouse acceleration. In general I hate it, because it makes for really weird movements. I use a Marble Mouse USB on highest sensitivity, no smoothing, and no accel.

Will you be trying the MX Ergo? There's a dpi switch button that you may find useful when needing to do those small/fine movements. Also could be because you aren't getting enough of an angle with the M575 especially if you found the Vertical comfortable, my wife uses the Vertical and loves it as she gets no wrist issues using it whereas I champion the Ergo and it's variants die to pain at my elbow. I feel you should give the Ergo a try because it has the adjustable angles and dpi switch that may improve your QOL when working. The Ergo plus which is apparently only available at Best Buy in the increases the angle another 10° which I would love to get a hold of but may just get someone to build a vertical base for it as I'm in Australia.
