I think the reason why people think of Nazis when they see German inspired things is because Nazis are flashy and most people tend to care about the flashiest parts of History.

I think the reason why people think of Nazis when they see German inspired uniforms is because most people don't know a lot about history so they tend to focus on the most flashy parts of History like the big wars and the crazy ideologies and the ultra powerful Nations without knowing about all of the boring stuff that led up to the exciting stuff kind of like watching a fight scene compilation without knowing anything about the story. And why I think they focus on the Nazis specifically is because the Nazis for his evil as they were we're pretty much undoubtedly the most flashy part of German history they almost took over all of Europe after coming out of a crazy recession they have this crazy ideology and they also have a leader who's commonly seen as the most evil man in history which in general makes Nazism one of the flashiest ideologies of all time so much so that it overtakes pretty much all of German culture to a lot of people I'm sure there's an academic term for this flashiness I'm talking about but anyway that's why I think people think of Nazis when they see almost anything German.

While I understand the Nazis were evil, I must admit their uniform design is top quality and I don't mind if people love to wear them.

Also be honest: Nazi uniforms are just badass. Anyone who doesn't they they look cool and stylish just has terrible fashion sense.

I'd say there are four main western cultures Japan love to obsess over. Germany, USA, United Kingdom and France. If you have watched any anime with for example exchange students they are usually one of the four or a fictional variation of them and an idealized version them from a certain period of time. When Germans are depicted it's usually from the German Empire era or high middle ages. United Kingdom is usually based on sterotypical nobels from the 1600s-1800s, French pretty much pre-revolution nobility and USA modern or semi-modern.

People liking the SS uniforms because they do not know the context is a testament to their designer imho. Germans had some stylish uniforms in and before WW2. And the Bundeswehr (now german army) uniforms still look awesome.. but would look even more awesome if they were black...

Why? Cause Germany and japan were allies and didn't get to experience the Nazi did in the western hemisphere. And japanese people find Nazi memorabilia cool.

I'd say it's because unlike in Germany where fascist imagery was heavily outlawed after WW2 (even to the point where the band KISS has a different logo there because their SS looks too similar to the Nazi SS), Japan got off relatively light despite doing some pretty messed up things during that time (to give you a good idea, the Nazis of all people had to send someone to tell them to tone it down), and when anime came along, they pretty much saw no real reason why they couldn't. In Japan, World War II is not taught in schools as a battle of political ideologies or a war against fascism, but as a conventional war. Treating Hitler and the Nazi Party as charismatic and powerful leaders of countries during wartime, instead of war criminals. to give you a good idea of how lightly Japan got off, one of Japan's post-war Prime Ministers was *a Class A war criminal* (for those who don't know how high Class A is, if Hitler was captured alive, he would've been tried as a Class A war criminal) let that sink in....

Ironically enough, I first found out about Nazis through an anime, an OAV to be exact called “Kishin Corps” that was broadcasted on TV. I was either 7 or 8 years old back then and that was when I REALLY started getting into anime.

I think a lot of Anime that features Nazis (as bad guys might I add) take more of a page from Indiana Jones with Nazis being Over the Top, almost to the point of parody bad guys. I mean just look at Hellsing: Ultimate with the dialogue the members of the Millennium have, if that's not taking the piss out of Nazi Ideology idk what is. I also 100% agree that there is a huge distinction between German Culture and the imagery of the Third Reich, just as there is Japanese Culture and The Government of Imperial Japan or British Culture and the British Empire for example.

Because they were allies in WW2 and had a big cultural influence, lots of mechanical and engineering knowledge, discipline etc. Bam, case closed. Move along! xD

I have seen many animes and many have obsession with Germans and Germany like Girls und Panzer, Izetta die letze hexe, kämpfer etc. And mostly reincarnation animes have a German setting but I never saw them obssesed with Nazis. Most are fun animes with little to no military(except izetta, saga of Taniya the evil and GuP) setting but has a German one like The aristocrats other worldly adventure, I favour the villainess, kämpfer etc.

However, I think it's important to note that in Japan, while the general population's ignorance of World War 2 is not the general population's fault; the ignorance is a part of a concerted effort of denialism and obfuscation of world war 2 history but their government and government historians. People's ignorance of nazism is not intentional, but the government making sure they are ignorant is.

Japan is obsessed with Germany more so than Nazis. Nazis just have the prestige of dominating pop culture when it comes to Germany. As a result Nazis will get referenced a lot more than other German time periods in any part of the world, not just Japan. But Japan itself has a love affair with Germany pre-dating the Nazi Party. But brought closer to the 1930/40s.

About JoJo, the important part is not that Araki is a Nazi, but rather that Nazis are SO vilified in the West that even the things in JoJo part 2 would be avoided here because ANY REMOTELY sympathetic depiction of Nazis is at least a little taboo, and people are very careful to avoid anything that is not CLEARLY anti-Nazi whenever Nazis or even things that remind people of Nazis come up. You yourself have equated a purported obsession with Nazis to intentionally propagating Nazi ideology. What interesting is that many Japanese Anime and Manga, including JoJo, don't explicitly structure his depiction of Nazis around anti-Nazism to quite the extent that Westerners have come to expect, and that's why it's seen as maybe pro-Nazi, or as you put it "poorly handled". For another example (also from the 1980s), look at the Urusei Yatsura movie "Beautiful Dreamer", where their culture festival (or whatever) business is (due to Megane's influence) Nazi-themed. It's a joke that Megane likes Nazis, but none of the characters make any objections on anti-Nazi grounds, which in most Western countries is enough to make people suspicious of you. There's also some Gundam scene where the king of Zeon (or Neo-Zeon or whatever; I haven't watched Gundam and was just shown the scene) tells asks his general if he's ever heard of Adolf Hitler, and says he thinks he might be making the same "mistakes" as Adolf Hitler did, which I think are something like national arrogance leading to a military defeat, and not so much a moral failing related to the Holocaust. (It's also worth noting that Zeon is vilified for the most part, and has a very German aesthetic, but older, my brother thinks German Empire or WW1 era.) This was clearly not pro-Nazi, but I still feel like it wouldn't be put into an American or European show as cartoony as Gundam, and not just because of how odd the question "Have you ever heard of Adolf Hitler?" seems.

In my opinion the writing and animation of Strike Witches was not focused on political philosophies of the 1930s and 40s.
