Some people go into real estate development. I went down that path, went to graduate school and now I've been doing real estate private equity fund investments/management for 7 years. I don't know if I like my job more than architecture job, but it sure as hell pays a lot more than before.

@@Alex-tg2jp I dunno, it varies from countries to countries, some countries have high demand in architects, some are not. I guess u need to do a research first from the internet, ask about it from a professor or the architects from your country themselves.

@@Alex-tg2jp I'm not an architecture student nor am I going to take it but yes, you can have a good balance of life and work with a proper time management and being selective when choosing clients to work with, for example some demand a very complicated design that takes a lot of time to do while others are not. Got this answer from a friend whose brother takes architect major and now has been working in Canada for almost 2 years now (If Im not mistaken). Hope this helps :)

Hey! Thanks for you point of view! I feel the same way sometimes as well. Some projects are fun, but the business side of architecture is what I least prefer about the career. I mean the back and forth with the engineers via email, and meetings, and all that stuff. I also enjoy the schematic phase over the other ones as well so when I'm doing CD's, I tend to feel my days drag on.... I'm glad that you found other ways to make money that give you more freedom though, that's awesome!

@@Moochers I still love architecture and I do some self research on renaissance architecture which I love. I might design and build my own house one day. I like detailing. Running a job, dealing with office politics and manage the team is not for me. I only work 5-6 hours a day now and preparing to start couple of online business. To be honest, there are a lot of ways to make money, if you like the job it is good, but if you hate the job like me, it is good to find a way out.

I will be graduated as an architect this year (bachelor's degree). I plan to go deep into 3d modelling & animation especially environmental/secenery art. @@meiong5206 since I was 3 years I've been drawing houses for 4/5 hours a day,now I'm still interested in houses,statues,and other things,so I think I can manage it,,the stress of being an architect is due to your work and your client btw.

@@hannahmaeocado2828 its been 4 weeks of my second year already and it gets better everyday. This year's subjects are more technical (physics,structures...) but they are cool anyway, despite of them being online. First year went as smooth as butter, i had great fun and learnt a lot (almost 40% of the year was online because of Covid but my teachers were able to give their classes properly) Let's see what comes next!! im only 15 going to gr.10 rn but wanna think about these stuffs early and i was thinking this week that i wanted a job that i could go to my home everyday and have time for friends and chilling and then i thought about architecture and im interested in it but like does it take long and do u get a good pay(for a person not supporting anyone)and is it hard to find a job and are the studies hard cuz idk if college is how people portray it like u need to study 10+hours just to pass and like its so stressful cuz if it is imma have to advance study and actually focus on school now, if u could reply to this that would be great cuz im really confused like idk bout my future.I watched vids and ppl said its a very high paying job and these replies says otherwise btw i hate maths so i chose this than engineering but if engineering guarantees a job easily and a high paying one and still have lots of time out of work then maybe ill put in the work for maths

Wow.... so inspiring... and at the end of the day I won't even be able to feed a family with a masters and years of working your ass off with no personal life, no nothing other than architecture, just because you like the work and because being an architecture is cool and people will respect you. All that nonsense does not matter if work my life off and gain no money in return. I'm 19 now, about to start studying architecture. If all this is true I'm going to have a miserable life, don't get me wrong, I love architecture and I don't want to do anything else, but I still might change my mind just because of money alone, seriously. I care about personal life and money. My dreams and hopes have been crushed... fuck this. It's either a job I hate that pays well or a job that I like that diminishes every other aspect of life and pays me shit. The latter sounds worse...

That's nice and all, until rent's due, bills flood your mailbox or children apprear in the picture. There's no ifs and buts up to a point of decency. It's a hell to get to the point where you can work as an architect and it's absolutely normal to expect a certain return on your investment. Unfortunately, that return never comes (at least in my experience). Add to that the crap that most of us work on ( 0 professional fulfillment) and it seals it. I'd not recommend it to my worst enemy.

This is what I'm talking about. There are soooo many ways to make extra money through architecture, it's just not through the traditional route and definatly not taught in school. Requires let's of thinking for sure. But that's a great point you make!

Honestly there are a lot of careers were you "sacrifice" those things, every career has its pros and cons. I was thinking of switching from nursing to architecture, because I have always loved to draw. I guess the grass always looks greener from the other side

@@Moochers this is untrue if you are on multiple projects that basically require you to be in the office 12-14 hours a day including at least one day on the weekend. There is also the toxic unspoken trend of who can work the longest in the office. While it's true if you plan what you need to do effectively it's not that bad, but when the work piles up and you're scheduled for more hours than there are in a month it can suck tremendously. And that is where the sacrifices come into play.

Hey Carlos, the process of becoming an architect is different depending on where you are. Typically you need a bachelors/masters in architecture, internship hours then you need to take the exam. Where are you located? I am in the US and also familiar with the process in the Philippines.

Hey! Great questions. Competitions. Competitions show that you are interested, they help you think outside the box. They strengthen your ideas, help you learn about problems all around the world, they show that you are passionate about architecture. The list goes on and on. That, and also I suggest you hang out with those who are about to graduate and see what inspires them. Maybe that will spark some more inspiration in you and help you do some extracurricular activities that you can put in your CV / portfolios

You must still be in highschool, so...before you embark in the shi*show called architecture, search (multiple!) pratices in your city. Go there and talk to the (especially young) architects and ask them if they'd do it all over again knowing what they know now. I'd wager a significant number would tell you not to walk, but run away.

@@ar_th good choice Don't live with regrets and "what ifs" because of it. It's a waste of time and most architects I know either have quit, are quitting or still practice, but despise it.

Hey! You're welcome. I'm glad that you're enjoying the videos. I graduated and recieved a Masters Degree in architecture. The past jobs I'm refering to is when I was 16-23, I had jobs at places like banks and insurance agencies and they were non-creative and repetitive.

@@BattlefieldCR7 No, I started studying at 18, right on time. But I've had to work since I was 16 while going to school because my parents weren't able to afford my school.

If you go to school for architecture, you'll take classes like history and theory of architecture, structures, design classes, technical drafting classes, materials and methods and professional practice. All your classes will revolve around architectural design. Here is the thing: the bulk of your classes will be your design classes. You have one each semester. Each semester you'll be given a design project (or a few) that revolves around a concept or problem. Sometimes you'll design an art gallery, sometimes a house, sometimes a building that deals with climatic issues, sometimes it will be something futuristic etc. It depends on the school. Sometimes it could even be a piece of furniture or object. It's tough to explain. Whatever the case, you are expected to thoroughly research the projects "program" and that doesn't mean you'll be researching for one week. No , you'll be researching for the whole semester to make your project a believable and accurate one. So if you're designing an art gallery, you need to learn what a gallery is, how it works, how art gets transported and maintained, how it is protected, how to you load / unload artwork, how many people go there and how do they deal with it, and so much more. In order for you project to succeed, you have to really investigate your topic. So to answer you question, you'll only study architecture, but depending on your projects, you'll actually be researching and investigating other miscellaneous topics as well.

Depends on what your definition of wise is lol. One thing to keep in mind is that even though you have a lot of experience in construction, you're going to start from zero in architecture. That being said, because of your construction knowledge, you're going to move and progress very quickly. Why not just get a job at an arch. firm and see how you like it?
