Art school is expensive. The rise in tuition costs has forced students to come up with creative solutions to afford the cost of an Arts degree program. In this video, I discuss ways to afford art school without going broke.

Art school is where you start building your network.

These RISD sketchbooks are sometimes manufactured in days, given the skill to pull this is off is super cool but it is hardly a journal in these cases but a showcase… RU-vid is full of examples for this method 😂

I will spare the details of my extensive art education background and leave this one comment on strategy. Who ever it is that is going accept your application, you should go to their studio ,office, class and meet face to face and shake hands. Your face should come to mind with familiarity when they see your name on the application. Consider the over all cost of college program, and whats at stake with scholarship, and you can see the cost of travel to meet n greet a Proff is minimal by comparison. Some schools have critiques open to public, and get a good crowd, this is absolutely ideal for the student to meet and converse. Ask to sit in on their class. Write them a thank you letter highlighting what you learned from the visit. The student will stand out among other applicants. By putting forth ten percent more than everyone else, you will be ninety percent farther than everyone else. Also, get as much teaching experience as possible on your resume, even if its not art related.

Thank you for commenting and sharing your experiences. Always a great recipe for success in any situation in life. Social skills go a long way. Students nowadays can benefit from portfolio days at many colleges. This presents an opportunity to make initial contact with faculty or staff.

Thanks a lot for the information, Maestro Borrero. As always this is very valuable guidance. In my case it’s way too late, as I studied Chemical Engineering and my Postgraduate is also non-art related, but if I would have taken painting as a career I would definitely have gone this way. Great advice you give to those taking the arts path. And for amateurs like me, all your videos. and courses are just fantastic. Greetings from Germany.

I feel the same way. All my life I am divided between techniques and the arts. Art classes in school were however my most favourite and in the age of buying the first SMARTphone, I bought the first on artists anatomy from Gottfried Bammes. I followed all after class courses in school, mainly graphic courses. I saw and grinded my first palette and stretched my first canvases from old bed linnen after I found and got the old oil paint tubes from my grandfather who painted for some 10 years. No one, including myself, believed that I would make it into art school, which was also regarded ideologic (socialist realism etc.). Today we see, how technically good the art education was, see the Leipzig school. The life path however went to hydrology related engineering whith a short intermezzeo on infrastructure constrution sites. That was the life path and today I think that I should have chosen the art path, because that would have been the true sould path. But regretting is not good, as all lead to life and lerning experiances. Anyway, art school, this is my feeling since many years, whould have been my soul path. I tried evening classes on figure drawing, oil painting and art history and am happy with what I learned there. Now, inspired by Luis Borrero and similar channels, I find more and more a way to merge technique and art. Art techniques are the strong motivator. Grinding own oil paints, reading Renaissance treatices on the art of painting, making own "de Mayerne"knifes, working with glass and other material in the paintings, making my own lead white... thanks Luis for the many inspirations to do that and to refresh my love for drawing and painting, as I fell during the plandemia into a creative black hole. Very inspyring videos about art and a very friendly and inspiring community posting under those great videos.

Louis, thank You a lot, your channel is fantastic. Please don’t read this;): As I saw here and in many other channels the materials should be of a great quality, but not important, are they old style or new ones, do Yuo paint loose or detailed is not realy important. All is important is to find out your way to do things and to become good in it. Then to find Your customers. It requires time and dedication.

No , it’s not remotely worth it( thank goodness I had a Scholarship). Life drawing in private studios , self taught color theory and lots of time in museums is your best spent money. And channels like this.

Art school is certainly worth the cost but only if you decide it based on your experience. I never met this ableist person who pulled the strings on so many other less fortunate students who had all kinds of issues which were used to justify kicking them out from further participation. As content produced by recently graduated students from The Icelandic Art University became worse and worse fewer are willing to apply to become students there and have begun creating their own art education programs. I was among the more fortunate ones who graduated from courses dealing with art history and art theory.

Interest should always beat style, people looking for a style are people fond of categorizing and limiting people 😢
