Is ASGARD'S WRATH 2 really that good?

If you’re thinking about buying Asgard’s Wrath 2 on Quest 2 for $60 or are thinking about making the leap to Quest 3 just to play it…you’re gonna want to watch this video first. Because it might not be exactly what you're expecting…
I was sold on this game as being this epic, action-packed story with deep RPG mechanics, true physics-based combat, fun traversal options, and an impressively long runtime that couldn’t possibly leave me unsatisfied. However, when I first played Asgard’s Wrath at launch I only got two hours in before moving on to other games. Something about it just didn’t hook me like most VR games do…
But after finally returning to the game and playing for another 10 hours, I think I’ve figured out why. So in this video I’m going to break down why Asgard’s Wrath 2 definitely falls short of being a VR “masterpiece” but why it might still be worth playing anyways.

I muddled my way through the first puzzle room and then just stopped when I got to the second one. I love a good puzzle but along with all the other tedium I felt I was putting up with, it just put it over the edge for me. It's a shame because it looks like there are lots of gems in this game if you are willing to go slog through a lot of frustration, which I am much more willing to do on a flatscreen game where I can be completely comfortable and don't have to worry about a short battery life. This game gives me a headache after a couple of hours, and with the relatively short battery life of my Quest 3 it just feels more worth it to spend that time not being unnecessarily frustrated. Thanks for the review! Love your videos.

Totally man! I played the game a bit further and there are cool parts to it. But the combat just isnt that great and it keeps throwing puzzle after puzzle at you just to waste your time to make the game longer. it feels like the whole game was just made with the intent to make a loooooong game.

Look, I like the game and all but people overhyped this game like crazy. It’s basically a vr Ubisoft game with some cool mechanics and some great dev support and continued features. I love vr games and I love rpgs, and it’s definitely worth playing if you’re into those things, but it’s no witcher 3 or baldur’s gate 3. There’s no actively hostile publisher nonsense and it’s a good time in general but a legendary game needs to be a legendary game whether or not it’s in vr, not because it’s in vr.

information: it was confirmed a few months ago that Asgard's Wrath 2 will get a graphical update for Quest 3 which will bring a 4K texture pack to the game, so you can expect good improvements in the graphics, this update should be out by the end of April or maximum in early May.

I mean it's just the puzzles for me man. I could give a flying fuck about solving a puzzle in VR. It's stopped me from playing this game several times now and it's a shame because everything else is pretty enjoyable. I don't get some "ah ha" feeling when I solve the puzzle....I just feel relief of being able to move on.....

@MegaIronica Час назад
First of all, this is a very nice video with nice pace, editing, and very interesting content. I already played and finished the first Asgard's Wrath. In the beginning, it was just like you described AW2. However, once I learned how it works, I fell in love with it. That being said, here are some suggestions 1) Have you tried AW2 after the Quest 3 upgrade? While it doesn't make it as good as PCVR, I find the difference significant and just tips it over to the good enough graphics category. It is a huge deal because while the graphics aren't groundbreaking, they stop being distracting, and you enjoy the game more 2) Have you tried "Give me Wrath" level difficulty? The fact that it is more challenging forces you to think about your attacks and defense in more clever ways. I think comparing the gameplay pysics to Bone Lab is really an inaccurate comparison. The game has to stay accessible and Bone Lab is an aquired taste. It is unrealistic to ask for such level complexity for a game intended to please as many people as possible. 3) it seems you are still thinking about VR games from a flat screen perspective. When you say the main character you play has no personality and you only hear the mortal human characters talk, you must realize that the main character is YOU! You are playing in first-person perspective, and it doesn't make sense if your character starts talking to himslef. When the mortal characters are talking, they are talking to you as the God that is taking control of their body but not their minds. This is much clear in AW1, and maybe that is why you dont understand it well. Just like Moss1 and Moss 2. The reader doesn't say anything because the reader is the player himself. 4) The puzzles are actually very engaging and challenging. I also had to use walk-through videos for AW1, but I can tell you they made it much clearer in AW2. In AW1, I was often lost and didn't know where the game wanted me to go. But with adding the compass in AW2, they made a big improvement. Anyways, I really wish they made a PCVR version of it for best graphics, but for me, the experience makes it more than worth it.

Valid criticisms, but honestly the reason I'm not so huge on the Asgard's Wrath series is that I'm just not that big on Fantasy. I thought the scope of the world was great, and likewise the appearance (with the qualifier, "for standalone" with the second one), detail and general polish. Just not a world that interested me much. Same reason I love Fallout VR (modded), but don't care for Skyrim.

I agree this game is nowhere near perfect, not even GOTY materia. It was worth 60 to me because it included Asgard's Wrath 1 so it's more like I got two games for $30 each. (I fully completed that game before starting this one). I think some points made in the video are just personal preference, though. The first thing to come to mind are the puzzles, I actually quite enjoyed those, that "aha" moment when everything clicks makes me feel like the smartest guy in the world (I know that's just an illussion because puzzlesn in games are designed to be solved after all), but that's probably because I enjoy games like The Legend of Zelda. I also enjoyed backtracking, coming back to old areas once in a while with a new ability unlocked to get items I couldn't before, but that's because I enjoy Metroidvanias. I also liked the restrictive, timing-based combat, but I do feel it was a bit less focused and chaotic than AW1's combat. Speaking of AW1, That game was a lot more linear, but it felt better paced, it reminded me a lot of God of War 2018, but with Zelda puzzles too. AW2 feels more polished in certain areas AW1 lacked, and I hope AW3 combines AW2's polish with AW1's restraint, that would result in a game we could truly call great.

For me my biggest complaint is JUST the combat. I've grown so accustomed to physics-based combat like Blade and Sorcery that anything even a little arcade-esc in VR melee combat just kind of falls flat for me. Im fine with all the exploration stuff because its nice to have a breath of fresh air between combat, and I actually like the puzzles. My only other complaint is the lack of loot that barely makes the game feel like an RPG. I want to wield a big ass greatsword and I want the collisions with the sword to feel like its actually crushing bones, not some tiny hatchet that barely has feedback when you attack.

I just got a Quest 3 and started playing this game for about 4 hours. I really like it so far but your review made me realize why one word kept popping up in my mind. Tedious. I wasn't sure why at first because everything looked great to me. There's so much to do, so I should really like it. You nailed it on the head though. It's scripted and it's tedious. I'd enjoy the fights and then the boss fights so much I wanted to keep going but then it felt like I'd suddenly hit a wall when a puzzle comes up. I'd have to context switch because I want more combat but now I have to try to solve a puzzle, and there are no hints like you've pointed out, so I have to take off my headset, google or youtube the solution, then go back in. It really does ruin the flow. I find myself just stop playing completely at times because I'm taking off my headset to go search for the solution to a puzzle. So I just put it off and don't play again for days because it felt like something I don't want to do. It felt like a chore when it should be enjoyable.

I get the disconnect. similar to death stranding. when youre a reviewer youre expected to finish all the games you play. which means theyre used to sitting through boring parts. and even if theres a lot of boring parts, if it all makes up for it in the end then its still a great game. regular gamers though will get to those boring parts and just stop playing the game because its boring. if im playing a game thats boring why would I continue when I know 10 other games I could be playing instead that I know for a fact are all super fun?

I have sort of fell off on this game 40+ hours in... I still think it is a great game... it's just too much. The game tries to be too many types of games at once. RPG is about stats and items, while action VR is about the sword play and ranged accuracy. This game tries to do both at once and then throw puzzles on top. It's off putting to do a perfect parry and counter attack to see it do 1% damage, then die immediately because the enemy happens to be 30 levels above you... in a cave next to the starting area.

Excellent video. I would have devoured this game during my VR honeymoon phase, but I am long beyond that. Sanzaru Games is a quality studio. Unfortunately, much like Assassin's creed VR, it is held back by its platform. While I have many problems with the game, the pacing killed my interest before being able to craft anything, like in Asgard's Wrath. I spent a good chunk of my playtime looting everything possible, yet being unable to do anything of consequence with what I gathered. What Sanzaru achieved with the limitations presented is amazing, but failed the most important aspect of a vide game. It wasn't fun. I couldn't see past its technical limitations. Earning the next carrot wasn't rewarding enough for the effort required. While "Meta" has pushed the VR industry to new advancements in hardware, it has stymied its software counterpart by abandoning the PCVR platform. Also by hoarding developers to eliminate competition, but that is a tangential rant I will avoid.

If you’re willing to get past The Red Chasm in Saga 2 (around 9 hours in with not much exploring) then the pace starts to pick up. Most temples/key areas in Saga 2 are a little bit over an hour long and it teaches you the roots of the game so you can keep up with the faster pace eventually. There are also movement sections and simple storytelling to break the ice as well. And if you beat Saga 3 which is also around 9 hours without exploring, game’s pace picks up exponentially. It just depends if you’re willing to sit through the “soft” parts that hold your hand more/restrict you to get to the really tender ones. The gameplay loop might eventually stick and overall I just got a little frustrated because of overthinking at the best.

Not gonna lie this is a good video but it really misses the mark at one point. One review from IGN is subjective in the playtime. Bro was doing so much shenanigans in the rift that he was probably in there for at least 30 hours. He also got that monkey sidequest which means he had to sift through many requests to also get to that point and he also probably explored a lot. I spent 60 hours to beat the game on Wrath and I was stuck on a few parts and explored and did a few side quests. Around 15 of those hours were in the rifts. You make it look like you have to deal with filler in the main quests when the filler is up to you for the most part. There IS physics based combat, just not B&S style. It’s simple with it as you have simulated weight (not too extreme) of weapons and physical damage are based off of how hard you hit. With the “lack of immersion” that’s definitely a personal thing because Saga 2 is around 12-15+ hours casually and you only are in your Cosmic form when you launch the game, then you head straight to your mortal form. Quite wacky how you showed parts of the game that have invisible walls because if you just open your compass, you are clearly not supposed to go that way. Why would you jump down 60 feet in the air when you can take stairs? (7:01) Why would you go to a bum pile of rocks when the litteral temple is in forward direction? If you wanted to get to that area you could’ve before you approached the temple. (7:16) It’s just more of a common sense thing and the way how the game is coded I don’t think it would work well without those restrictions. You are right about a bit of the unclearness and a little bit of the tediousness but this review turns a little bit “experimental” especially with the comparison. For something that was built on the quest 2 it’s revolutionary, and there’s yet to be a graphics upgrade which is pretty cool. It’s very important to finish the game because the pace starts to pick up after Saga 3, and puzzles get very easy and there is significantly less. I wish you treated this more like a sponsored review.

I can tell you’re pretty passionate about this game and I’m glad! My entire goal with this channel is to get more people excited and passionate about VR, because it’s something I really love and believe in. But I just personally felt really disappointed by this supposedly “game-changing” VR game because it lacked so many of the qualities that made me fall in love with virtual reality in the first place. And while I could’ve approached this video much more positively like my other videos, that would be dishonest to my own experience, as well as wouldn’t add anything super meaningful to the discussion about this game since the majority of the coverage I could find on this game was already very positive or sponsored. If it helps, this video is intended to be much more of a video essay/critique than a fully encompassing review, since I didn’t fully complete the game. After 15 hours of not enjoying the game, I didn’t imagine much changing, and even it the game did get much better in the final act, it would still be difficult for me to recommend since it took so long to get there. That’s a lot of time and money to commit to a game that simply isn’t as fun or immersive as others on the market. But again, that’s just my personal opinion and I totally respect yours!

@@VirtualBroVR yeah I just felt like you could’ve done a little bit more research, weather in the codex or exploring because it does start off with a lot of puzzles but most aren’t frustrating, or at least to me. Not trying to change options but I just felt like it gave this game a bland, filler impression that made it only good for the boss fights or something. Besides that the video was good 👍

For me game drags for ever. Pacing is its biggest issue. Second to this is collecting junk. My friend asked me if empty crates are a main enemies in this game.

It's too linear. Feels like I'm playing a storybook. I, as the player, don't really have any impact on anything. It's a pleasant hack and slash puzzle game. Just not for me.

Its very average. It's like a aaa studio went full steam ahead to make a VR game without understanding what a good VR game is. Games like Alyx and red matter 2 are good. They are immersive, interactive, there's no HUD.

Asgard wrath 2 didn't appeal to me, even as free. The gameplay seems flat. Also, if done right stylized graphics can be really good, but here it looks like they oversaturated all and is really bad not just because is low fidelity.

the game is average, its not 10/10 for sure. Since there are nothing similar in VR.. they got a higher score. I only storm through the campaign and didn't bother w/ the side contents. VR really is a hit or miss w/ melee/fantasy games. It's only good for shooters, the melee physics are awful in most games.

You are taking the VR community down with such a review. I see the comments of new VR users and they listen to you for some reason! this game is a masterpiece in a any way. Far better then any open world game i ever played. And i have played alot! The quality of this game is amazing! Please give this game another chance before you trush about it. And people im the comments section try the game for yourself before you make up your mind.

This review is actually quite horrible when I think of it. Litterally tons of misinformation even though he has played enough to confirm it. Lots of intrusive thoughts and icks that he just decided to throw onto the game. The invisible walls aren’t even an issue

I think it's better for AW2 to exist than not, for the sake of the VR gaming ecosystem. It lacks a lot of the nuance of other VR titles in favor of being a spectacular story akin to Uncharted or other "movie games". It's unfortunate the so much of the playime is padded out by lackluster combat and puzzles, but it is still a very important milestone in the evolving genre.

As if questies have much choice from the 3 exclusive games on the platform.. We have seen better graphics on smartphones a few years ago and the game design is so bad that even Playstation 2 games from +20 years ago had less invisible walls and more open levels. But the worst part is exactly the gameplay with hundreds of hours torture rather than any gameplay.

Not exactly. Don’t wanna spoil it too much but you litterally decide the future of Egypt, and the game ends on a flexible note (End of Saga 5 and 7) for a potiential sequel that will even have less limitations. So litterally it wasn’t about an ending but the fun and the friends you made alone the way. Because you rushed it it felt even less enjoyable as it should’ve. The events that happen after Saga 3 are far from lazy and are quite creative.
