Mr Freeze fight also has the most drastic changes according to the difficulty. If you play on easy or normal, Oracle will send you data that shows different types of takedowns to defeat Freeze. On Hard, that isn't available and Freeze gets more health. And on Hard+, Freeze gets even more health and he will shut down your detective mode if you use it for more than 8 seconds
You know…every time I play this game, I remember there being a takedown list for freeze and never understand why it’s not there when I play. Now I know it’s because my first run in 2012 was on Easy mode lol
@@JsReviewsI first played Arkham City on Wii U, but I never played it on hard. When I got the game on Xbox-one a few years later, I played on hard mode for the first time & was confused as to why the list didn't show up. After a few more play throughs, I just chalked it up to the list being one of the new gamepad features introduced in the port. Finding out it was there the whole time blew my mind and I have your video to thank for that.
This games is so good. A perfect follow-up to Asylum. I love how big the map is, the optional objectives are all fun, the Mr. Freeze fight is really fun and engaging, and I like how they brought Hugo Strange into the mainstream. Plus we get the best Catwoman A really great time.
I love that Arkham City's world is very small and compact, but very (content) dense, that to me is the best open world/level design. I hate vast, almost empty, no-level design open worlds that take forever to traverse and quests/missions/the story makes you go from one side of the giant map to the other.
I agree. It's also one of the reasons why I couldn't get into Zelda: Breath of the Wild or it's sequel because of how massive the world's are and doing all those stuff takes forever. I know many people enjoy these kinds of stuff. But not for me.
@@jaretco6423 I have always prefered small, compact, dense worlds. Big ones are good when they are also semi-dense, skyrim for example, but worlds like GTA or Ubisoft open worlds for the past 5-6 years have been torture. Missions/Quests make you go from one side of the map to the other, and that takes forever and you spend 80-90% of your game time traveling from point A to point B, it's absolutely annoying, either that or a loading screen, but if I have to fast travel, what's the point of the open world? And when you have a marker on a map with your objective, you tunnel-vision your way to the objective, ignoring the open world, at which point again, what's the point of the open world? Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Morrowind and similar games are the type of open/semi-open world that I truly enjoy.
Arkham city is one of my favourite games. While I can admit Arkham Knight has a lot going for it in that the maps bigger, the combat & stealth are more challenging & give you more options, I still prefer city. Mainly because the campaign & story are better but I’m more used to it & it’s easy to go back to
@@jaretco6423it’s the only reason I hate Arkham knight if it had regular Batmobile missions/gameplay mixed in with the world gameplay and graphics instead of world of tanks it would have been amazing
I personally prefer asylum over all of the future games mostly because of the atmosphere being kinda creepy and also it is doesnt make u feel overwhelmed with content
Asylum isn’t overwhelming whatsoever and that’s what makes it so entertaining and enjoyable, but after playing it for 15 hours+ there’s nothing more that you can really do, just the trivial things that you’ve already done many times
As someone who bought this game way back then when it was fresh & new, I have to say: it was an absolute delight! Batman Arkham City had it all. The gameplay, story, acting, replay value, & optional content. Not only did it cement itself as the best superhero game of all time for me and a lot of people, but it cemented itself as one of the best games of that generation period! And that says a lot when going up against games like Skyrim, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto 4, Bioshock, and many others! There's just something about this and Asylum that's truly magical.
I couldn’t put this game down the first time. One of the greatest sequel experiences I ever witnessed. This game was dangerously addicting because of how good the gameplay is. I was even obsessed solving riddles too. Combat was hella satisfying.
For me, it’s One of the greatest games of all time & my favorite installment of the Arkham series. Never before had I ever played a game & felt blown away watching the end credits scroll down my screen. Arkham City was the first game to do that for me, where I really said “Whoa, what did I just play?” Truly an amazing experience, and I’ll always have a special place for the Arkham games, City especially
Really looking forward to your review of Arkham Origins. That game was definitely underrated when it first came out. More recently however people have gone back to this game and have praised it for its great story and amazing performances and it has in my opinion the second best story in the series with the first being Arkham City. It also has the best and most accurate depiction of Bane ever outside the comics. They really maneged to expertly portray Bane's intelligence as well as his struggle and addiction with Venom.
My only issues with origins were how they made joker the main villain instead of black mask, recycling side content from City and how they sidelined Slade after one fight. Apart from that I loved it, even finished it on "I am the Night" mode
I still like Asylum more. It's far more atmospheric and has a comic book feel that Arkham City has much less of ir doesn't have at all. Also Batman got noticeably weaker in City, which I didn't like, despite the people he was beating up in City also looking weaker than before. It took longer to take down normal goons than in Asylum for whatever reason. Luckily they made him stronger again in Knight. It's still a great game but IMO - Asylum was better. To be clear - I didn't play any of Arkham games as a kid and discovered the trilogy just a year ago and played one after another, so nostalgia doesn't cloud my judgement about this, Asylum just seems like a better game. P.S. about the explosive gel mechanic you praise in this video - I was actually really annoyed how they removed the automatic explosion upon detection of enemies, as I used that all the time in the first game. Story-wise, it makes no sense for Batman to get rid of this incredibly useful technology.
I think the thing that makes this the best Arkham/Batman/DC game for me is how well it balanced great gameplay and a great story, Asylum’s gameplay I think still holds up well, but it does feels kinda dated though the game has maybe my favorite story of the series, meanwhile Arkham Knight definitely has my least favorite story that, while not bad, definitely could’ve been much better, but has easily my favorite gameplay of the series, and while this game isn’t my favorite in those categories, it managed to balance it out better than the other two which just made it better if you ask me
My issue with Knight's narrative is that the stories in the side missions were considerably more engaging than the main story. If not for Hugo Strange being tied to Ra's Al Ghul in City, that side mission surrounding him in Knight would have served better as the main story, but hey...it is what it is.
This game is simply a masterpiece. There’s flaws here and there, but overall quality is just ridiculously high. And I always liked how this game manages to be the most serious and the most funny at the same time
Tiny correction for the Return to Arkham collection. The games originally ran at a unlock framerate(don't remember if it was for PS4Pro/Xbox One X only or not) but due to how unstable the framerate was, it was (sadly) patched to locked 30FPS for all versions. If you play the physical version unpatched on a PS5 for example, you can get a locked 60FPS.
@@rogercolon619If you play the game offline without a patch you get it unlocked. Unfortunately I bought Return to Arkham digitally because it was like $20 before PS5 was ever announced but I wish I waited for that solid 60 fps and I wish they'd patch it back if they aren't gonna remaster or remake the games again
Spoiler alert: yes it is. This game comes from an era which I think is the current peak of gaming. Huge variety and innovation, great production value but short time between announcements and release dates, and only a couple of years between one release and the next in the series. There was also less trouble with studio greed, such as the micro-transactions and milking of titles for years with online play that plague the market today.
This game is as close to perfect as it can get. It had a very high bar to meet and actually made its previous game which was on its own genre defining and made it look obselete. Seriously theres never a reason to play asylum with city in your pocket
Couldn't even finish Arkham City because I was so bored with it and I hate open world games. Arkham Asylum before it felt like a much better game and it being basically a metroidvania.
8:25 I only discovered the ability to use the slide to quickly enter vents when I played Arkham Origins and then realised I could also do it in Arkham City.
Still the best superhero game out there and one of the greatest games of all time. Arkham knight improved in some ways, but was bogged down by the tank sections and disappointing story. Still a great game, but city is damn near perfect.
The Game Of The Year version was AWESOME 👌 👏 😎 🙌 I loved using the Batman Beyond suit or the yellow lantern suit, also thankfully the boss battles didn't have endless waves of henchmen like asylum did.
This game added lots of twists to Batman's story but I think the telltale Batman games did a lot to change the status quo too so maybe after your finished with Arkham you check that out too
I'm glad you acknowledged the remasters being arguably inferior to the originals. Most people and video essayists seem to take them for granted as a modern, convenient way to access the games. Then they'll go on to critique whether or not the graphics still hold up, saying things like "Batman's face looks derpy in Asylum" even though it's purely the remaster being botched. The remasters paint the games in a more negative light than they deserve, when in reality they hold up incredibly well as they are. It saddens me that most people getting introduced to the series now are going to experience the "remastered" edition. As a side note, I think the fact that Return to Arkham never came out on PC speaks to the developer/publisher actually being aware that the remaster doesn't compare to the original, maxed out, PC versions.
You're certainly not kidding when you said 2011 had some monster releases. Crysis 2, deus ex human revolution, battlefield 3, skyrim, dark souls. Probably best in history next to maybe 1998, zelda oot, mgs, re2.
Just recently replayed this game when the $4 sale for the Return to Arkham bundle was put on the PS marketplace, and I even decided to go for 100%. A lot of positive things to say about it: The combat still holds up and is very simple with enough different enemy types to keep me engaged, the Riddler trophies were not nearly as bad to get as I once thought, and the map is very easy to navigate. On this go-around, I managed to find a good majority of the Riddler trophies without having to look up a guide. The ONLY negative thing I can really say about this game is that the traversal feels significantly slower than Arkham Knight's, which I'd say isn't even a fair critique because it's an older game on older hardware, the map is much smaller, and the traversal did not feel slow to me when it originally came out. Arkham City gets a 10/10 from me, and that's not an easy score to get.
This game Is highly overrated especially compared to Spider-Man standards. The story Is where the problems arise, people give It a blank pass because of the ending and the roster of characters Involved. There are a number of things that conveniently happen at the right time and place. The story for the most part Is a big fetch quest for Jokers cure and It feels that way at some points, you're constantly going around to different places and characters for stuff, which In this case Is a double edged sword. It's good because you're doing different activities, unlocking gadgets, fighting new enemy types, new predator maps, ect. Where It falls flat there's no breathing time. It does get repetitive beating up thugs constantly, there's a fair amount of backtracking, the actual story takes a back seat for a lot of time until you encounter of new rouges villain that's when It feels like a reset In the story, like you have to progress with this character when there are 10 others. Catwoman part In the story Is short and disappointing and she should have gotten Involved more almost felt like she was just there to be there. Overall the story Is decent but heavily overrated, a lot of mistakes are covered up by the large cast of villains Involved, Knight also suffered from this problem with a lot of the side missions and characters feeling rushed and overstuffed In the game.
For all its faults, Arkham Knight puts this truly great game in its place, but only because of the next gen tech that allowed it to become what it was. AK still looks great today, and makes Gotham Knights look poor. But obviously, Arkham City is and will always be that good.
The best alternative costume in this game was the Sinestro Corp costume and it's nuts to me HOW LONG that stayed exclusive to buying the Green Lantern bluray. Glad I had it but then it wasn't available at all for YEARS, even as dlc.
Even if it's not as good on a technical level, I actually prefer Arkham Asylum to this game. I like how it leans into horror and leaves much of the world to the imagination, and I just think the asylum itself is a more interesting setting. I also found that the excessive amount of special moves and the relatively large amount of health you can acquire makes the game feel too easy at times. There's still a lot like about it but it's not perfect.
Arkham City and Arkham Knight are the greatest superhero games of all time. Arkham Asylum and Marvel’s Spiderman are great, but AC/AK are just too good.
Having just replayed all the Arkham games, I feel that City is good, and definitely a good sequel, but Arkham Knight is better. The gliding is better and faster, the combat and predator maps are more fluid, the graphics are phenomenal, even for todays standards. The only negative is the bat tank, but you can also roam the world in the other batmobiles, like 89, Nolan's, OG Arkham batmobile, the 60s batmobile, and even the BvS batmobile. You can also play as more characters than ever: Batman, Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, Azrael, Catwoman, Red Hood/Arkham Knight, even Harley Quinn! Absolutely incredible.
I still stand by my theory that the Arkham games mirror the Dark Knight Trilogy Asylum/BB - Perfect introduction to a series, introduces the feel, environment and darkness of the world and sets things up perfectly for the future City/TDK - Blockbuster entry, best of the series by a country mile, elevates everything from the 1st entry to an entirely new level Knight/Rises - Slightly disappointing ending, villain in a mask who knows who Batman is, ends with the “death” of the Batman
bruh... Arkham Asylum is by FAR the best batman game ever made, I'm sorry but that game had an unforgettable narrative. Unforgettable... more so than them all.
I always felt like City was overrated. Asylum is still the best in the series, IMO. Origins deserves more love than it gets. It doesn’t deserve to be treated by the publisher like it doesn’t exist.
Good video, I'm still playing through the game. One thing I will say though is I don't think we see eye-to-eye when it comes to remasters. Sure, there are some that aren't as good as they could've been, some that are meh and some that are just bad. But then there are others that keep up what made the original releases great and ones that actually improve the games. Like yeah, there are some that are unnecessary, especially if it's on a system where the older versions of the games were backward compatible anyway. But I just feel like these games on PS4 and Xbox One were fine remasters. A better example of remasters done right is Portal The Companion Collection on Switch. I didn't think they'd actually give the games 60fps on Switch, but they did. They aren't games that are extremely demanding or anything, but I've seen games that could easily have worked with improvements on Switch, but just didn't. Anyway, I think remasters are fine, as long as they're done right and I feel like a lot of hard-core fans of certain games make mountains out of molehills when it comes to most problems with remasters.
I just wish more DC characters headlined their own games. I heard that there’s finally a Wonder Woman game coming. Superman definitely deserves another shot.
I have replayed arkham city at least 5 times, and it still remains one of my favorite games, and it remains exciting no matter how many times I play it.
This was the game that made me never want to rent a game ever again. Nothing ruins a game as awesome as this than trying to complete it in under 5 days. Fuck Blockbuster.
This isn’t even up for debate this will always forever be one of the greatest games of all time I’ve been saying this since I was a child I’m saying this as an adult
Every "No kill rule" Batman fan's favorite sequel where Batman has a body count lol... Batman kills 1) Solomon Grundy 2) Clayface 3) Ra's Al Ghul 4) Joker although Joker kinda brought it upon himself, but still.
City is hands down the best Arkham game of the series, the best Batman game overall and one of the greatest games ever made. It does everything so perfectly on how an Batman game would be and it does it so well. Even if the likes Origins or Knight does do some improvements from City's gameplay mechanics, it also sacrifices other things that City did it so well. Whether if the games were twice as big and nothing going on that felt like an waste of time, having unnecessary gimmick that felt exhausted or not cooperate the right amount of flow in many design choices. City just does all of them perfectly and it's the one game I never get sicked and tired of playing over & over again because it's that fun.
I LOVED the design of this game. I mean that, its not the ultra photo realism you see in mordern games but that biting edge of the comics. Look how stupidly large Bane is, or the goofy perportions of Joker, or the fact they even have clayface, don't even get me started on how the world looks. its got such comic accuracy its just stunningly gorgeous. Not to mention they made a great redesign of Robin, I like the addition of giving Tim a hood, the armored Tee, boots and gauntlets while making his bo staff turn into a baton or shield? genius. While i loved some aspects of the batmobile in knight and had some fun playing it up until the cloud burst boss (never again), city still is the best of the trilogy.
Small correction, quickfire gadgets were in Asylum, but because of the limited gadget pool and quickfire gadgets not really being used in gameplay that much in Asylum, people don't even bother to use them. I'm pretty the tutorial pop-up for the quickfire batclaw doesn't even appear in the maingame and only appears when you start a combat challenge.
I'm gonna say it. I did not care too much for Arkham city. I can recognize how iconic it is and how amazing of an upgrade it was, but it just feels like a slog to play to me. More of an asylum or knight kind of guy. I will say I do think origins was city done perfectly.
This right here is the definition on how you continue a damn sequel. A true superhero sequel, man. *Legendary...* I have faith in insomniac games falling into the same position in october, when Arkham City released on October of 2011.
Arkham City is still one of my top 3 games of all time. Asylum was my favorite game when it came out, but City surpassed it in every way possible. I remember getting super frustrated with Origins, and I was loving Knight when I started playing it but was really glad when it ended, that game was a big disappointment to me at the time. Nowdays, I came to terms with Knight and I think it gets better once you know what to expect (the car soured the game for me and knowing it will be there eases the pain lol), there's still some cool moments but City is so much better as a whole. Truly one of the best games ever, imo, and I'm really not a AAA guy.
Will you review Arkham Origins Blackgate with Arkham Origins? I'm curious to know what you think of that. I only played handhelds when I was younger so that was my only Arkham experience.
Together with Asylum, the best superhero adaptations ever. Not better than the best superhero comic books, but among adaptations, Asylum and City are that good
Story is crap and is only remembered because of the ending. Strange literally does nothing the entire game aside from telling you when Protocol 10 is just to focus on Joker again. And when it does happen, Alfred has to force Batman to tale him down instead of going after Joker, only for Strange to be killed and undermined by Ras
Complete oversimplification of Stranges role in Arkham City. Pretty much everything from the gang wars in the city to Arkham City even being made was because of him. Nearly every major plot point in the game comes back to him, and acting like he did nothing is some Sin channel level of terrible media comprehension.
But you don't see joker really till the end of asylum and barely see scarecrow till near the end of knight so you must not like the story of any of these games
@@joshuaelder8983 True, but in Asylum, Joker being the main villain still had his presence felt through various videos, intercom and dialogues with his goons and he’d occasionally pop up in person. I literally forget Strange is still around in City because after the courthouse, he only says one sentence every few hours, comes back for 20 minutes at the end, dies and the game ends with Joker
This is a great game, but I don't think it's as good as Asylum or Knight. Asylum was better for the Metroidvania aspects, Knight made the open world better. City felt like an odd in between.
A friend asked me if Arkham City was any good when I got it. "Did you play Asylum?" "Yes" "Did you like it?" "Yes" "Then buy City because in Asylum you play as Batman and it's pretty awesome. But in Arkham City you ARE Batman."
Yup.. Actually its still Much Better then many Game that Releazed Broken, incomplete in the last 10 year.. Nowadays No Body deliver a Complete Game besides Frosoftwere.. so yeah it still one of the Best no argument in that.. just becouse its A Complete Experience from the GET GO. No need to Bulshit Patch post Lounch or DLC to increase the incomplete stuff.
