Is Benromach Making Some Of The Best Single Casks Out There Right Now? Reviewing Three Single Casks.

Today I am reviewing not one, not two, but three different Single Casks from the Benromach Distillery. When Benromach was awakened from it's slumber by Gordon and Macphail in 1998 it was truly in great hands. Today we are starting to truly see the spoils of the hard work that's been done since then. I don't think it's on display better anywhere than in the Single Cask bottlings Benromach has been releasing lately. In this review video I review three different Benromach Single casks to try and help demonstrate the quality that these bottles offer. First up is the Angry Otter Liquor 12 Year Old Benromach First Fill Ex-Bourbon Single cask. We then move onto the Kensington Wine Market(KWM) 18 Year Old Benromach also from a First Fill Ex-Bourbon Single Cask. Lastly I review the Dram Association/Strath Liquor 9 Year Old Benromach from a First Fill Sherry Cask. How good are these single casks? How do they rank against each other? Let's find out. Thanks Joel! I'm thinking you're going to enjoy that CS. It seems like anything Benromach touches these days is gold. Probably our best alternative to Springbank in B.C. at present. But that S.B. comparison discounts how good Benromach is in it's own context. It's just plain good. Cheers 🥃

Ever since I saw your review, I have been keeping my eye out for an older Benromach single cask to be available in my country and finally my long wait is over, I just ordered a bottle Benromach single cask ex bourbon, distilled on 20 Jan 2003 and bottled on 16 Aug 2023, 20yrs 7 months old, so excited..

Thanks for the review Matt, very interesting. I've not come across any of these before, and can't even find any of these for sale here in the UK which is a shame, as I've had the Benromach Cask Strength Batch 01, and its an absolute stunner. Highly recommended.

Hey Paul! That Cask Strength Batch 1 was fantastic by all accounts. I think these Benromach single casks sell quicker in the U.K. than in Canada. I'd suggest just keeping an eye out for them. I know Royal Mile Whiskies and a few other shops have had them in the past. A quick google search shows a store in the U.K. called "The Whisky Shop" with a 10 year first fill sherry cask available for £88.00, but I have no experience with this shop. A similar one is at "The Spirit Specialist" for £85.00, also 10 year first fill sherry. Either way these bottles generally have been excellent quality. Hope one crosses paths with you soon! Cheers 🥃

You're going above and beyond the typical youtube channel here! 😀 It's odd, as nothing seems to come up here, even when going into the whisky shop and searching in there, but I will certainly look into these Benromach's further thanks to your help, as these all look very good. Got about 50 different bottles in my cupboard at the moment, and I share a whisky club with 2 good friends with probably another 50 bottles, so have many a good tale to tell! Always especially interested in your posts when you do one of the bottles we've already done. Hopefully you will get around reviewing some of the other great bottles we've tried here. I picked up an 11 year Single Cask 1st fill Bourbon in San Francisco last December. If I’m honest, I really wanted a Sherrey finished expression since I like the core range & haven’t been able to score a cask strength bottle. That said, it’s an excellent dram. Not sure why I was so dismissive of bourbon cask maturation. Easy buy @ $60.00 for a cask strength whisky. Kicking myself for not buying a backup. Sigh. Great review BTW. That 18 year old SC sounds amazing. Cheers.

Great vid great bottles! Couple years ago Costco in my area of AZ got a 7 yr old ex 1st fill bourbon single cask Benromach…only regret is I didn’t get a chance to buy a backup

I just picked up a Binnys Single Cask barrel pick. It's coming in at 60.6%. It's a 10 year aged in first fill sherry hogsheads Distilled 7/11/2011 Bottled 8/2/2021 Cask 719 This is as smoky as Talisker, almost a Laphroaig level of smoke. It drinks hot... it is 121.2 proof and doesn't hide it. The sherry influence is very heavy, but not sweet. It's very sulferous... there's a lot of burnt match in it. There is a flash of heavy honey/ fruit behind the smoke, ash, and sulfer, but it comes and goes quickly. It finishes very long and peppery with just a touch of eucalyptus/menthol. Most of what I'm getting on the nose is the meat counter at the local butcher shop where you can get everything from steaks to smoked pork ribs and jerky.

Your welcome for the review! I wish I could say you didn't miss out, but I'm not going to lie, that 18 is excellent. I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that the new KWM Benromach will be quite a bit more money. The 18 Year was $200(and eventually on sale for $160 I believe) while the 19(almost 20) year old will be $300. A sign of the times? Either way, it seems these bottlings always deliver. Cheers 🥃

I have to ask...Where are you getting single cask bottlings of Benromach? Here in the US, Benromach only markets their core...10, 15, & 21. That's it. Just look at the Benromach online page; it asks at the start if the reader is UK or US. If it is the latter, they jump to the limited page. If you go with the former, you get access to the Contrasts series offerings, but still no 'single casks'. When I go to my online source for those Contrasts bottles, I still see no 'single cask' offerings. (H2FW)

Hey Kelly! Benromach single casks have seemed to be a bit feast or famine depending where you are at. In Western Canada we have a really good importer that works with Benromach. Currently The Strath in Victoria has a 1st fill Shery Benromach Single Cask, Angry Otter in the lower mainland has a 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon, Kensington Wine Market in Calgary Alberta has at least one 18 or 19 year old Ex-Bourbon but recently had 3 simultaneous single casks(all Ex-Bourbon), and finally Sierra Springs in Airdrie, Alberta has yet another ex-bourbon(under $100 Canadian no less). Does this actually help you? Sadly, I'm going to guess probably not unless you are coming to Canada as most of these stores ship across Canada but not out of country. I don't know who can ship to where you are in the States but there are a number of Single casks in the U.K. last time I checked, but again they seem to come out in waves. I'm not terribly familiar with this U.K. shop but one possibility I've found that apparently ships to the U.S. is "The Whisky Shop." They seems to have a 16 year old Ex-Bourbon and a 10 year old 1st fill sherry but they seem fairly pricey at 180 and 90 pounds respectively. I hope some single casks find their way to you soon Kelly! How would you compare the first fill sherry single cask to one of the regular Benromach CS releases (2009 batch 4 in particular)? I’m looking to purchase either of these, and would really appreciate your input! There are actually a 9y9mo and a 10y first fill sherry hogshead single cask at the store I frequent 😵‍💫

Hey! I haven't done a head to head comparison of the 2013 CS release and my Sherry Cask Single Cask but I would suggest both are great and my purchasing decision would be guided by price think. Benromach Cask Strength is priced about 30% lower than what I paid for the Sherry Single Cask. Also would depend on the particular Single Cask. Some are outstanding, others are just good. The Cask Strength, as it is a vatting of casks, would really be a safe bet. You have the potential for a home run with the Single Cask. Too bad they don't have bottles of the Single casks open for you to try. Hope this helps in some way. Cheers eh! 🥃

Great video, Matt...I do not alas have any single-cask from them but the 10 yo reduced to 43 % (2013+1 b.), a 2015 release but now discontinued 10 yo "100 Proof"(57 % abv) and my fav to date (of my collection) a La MdW storepick CS vintage 2008 bottled 2019 at 57,9 % (partly sherried n peated, u can see it in my video called "Peat or Sherry ? Why choose ?") but ouside my collection very impressed by the 50 yo i had the chance to try in 2019 if not mistaken (...). Cheers !

Greg, that Benromach 10 Year 100 proof is dynamite. It's a shame it's discontinued. I do have a soft spot for the 10 and 15 year at 43% ABV as well. Trying that 50 year old sounds like a pretty amazing experience. 50 year old Benromach is quite the unique bottling. Overall, it sounds like you've had some good impressions from benromach.. You have really put Benromach is high on my list but unfortunately it’s not readily available except in the low ABV bottlings. Maybe it’s too picky of me and not worth the effort but hard to imagine I’m the only one so wonder if you’ve considered periodically changing the music as it’s pretty distractingly repetitive, on a very short loop, and too far forward in the mix especially given the softness of your voice. I enjoyed it at the beginning of your channel but have to say that it’s been getting in the way more and maybe I’m not alone. Wish I could get anything from Kensington’s great selections but learn alot from their tasting videos as well as yours.

Hey Marc! Hopefully the availability of Benromach in your area increases in the coming months, seems most of their whiskies are making fans of people lately. Honestly, I don't know what I'd do for sourcing whisky without places like KWM. In regards to the music, I was hoping to get about a year in before changing it up, but following your feedback we're starting the search for a decent replacement. Nooooo! Springbank is the Benromach of Campbeltown! Please stop making that comparison. Don't Springbank Benromach. Benro is just another small, family-run, artisan distillery and if you keep pointing the unwashed masses at Benromach and screaming "Springbank!", you'll condemn them to the same fate as Springbank.

What I can say is that my next Benromach review is Patreon only, so pretty much only a handful of people will see it!
