As an ex engineering and post grad student, who was fairly good in studies, i have forgotten most of maths, i find Brilliant to be a good refresher of the common stuff and also helps keep my brain active while getting bogged down with relentless work and busy-ness of life. It is a good break from sitting on couch and watching Netflix after work. I have recently developed a huge interest in Quantum Physics, and to understand it a lot of old forgotten concepts are brought up, hence refresher is good.

The reason this is is because when you’re in school you’re not being emotionally engaged and our memories are formed based on emotions we feels while we form new neural pathways.

Honestly idk how much of the courses you’ve done but they def put some very challenging problems in there. They’re always a few easy questions in the beginning to ease you in but midway/towards the end of the course you’ll encounter some pretty tough ones. The practice section is def more challenging in terms of raw difficulty.

Reading the comments I see many identify with your take and that's great. But I just want to say you're clearly a very highly intelligent individual, much more so than many who I would speculate are in need of very basic foundational concepts offered in the courses to get them going. On a different note I read the article dealing with the relationship between brainteaser apps and genuine cognitive improvement and it confirms what I suspected that a heck of a lot of hype is involved in these apps. If I was just starting out (I'm pretty old now) I'd like to write a book on the massive distortive effect capitalism has on scientific research. Huge grants are given to researchers who's research promises to make investors rich. Little if any is given to those who's research isn't likely to make money. And researchers that might cause a loss of income are sidelined or smeared. Thanks for your video and all good things.

Hello ! Thats super interesting but you mainly speak from a STEM student PoV (which makes sense). On the other hand, im a man working daily and Khan is not only time consuming but also lacks providing me problems. I want to learn maths to learn physics in détail and i feel like Brilliant is helping me doing that (currently finishing foundational maths course list). My question to the STEM student you are would be : Do you think Brilliant could honestly make a standalone ressource for someone like me who will be willing to go deeper into physics but just wants to build a maths foundations to tackle real physics ? Its really hard as a non-STEM student to find some honest opinions on Brilliant since each short and or reddit thread seems like it attracts a LOT of hate from this community. Thanks a lot for your content and a great day i hope :)

The problem for me would be motivation. I would need something pushing me to learn this material, which I suspect in your case was the physics you were going to take. The thought process would be, “I have to learn this before physics starts in the fall.” If you just have a nebulous goal of “I want to learn”, odds are you’re going to try it out for a couple weeks and then it’s going to fall by the wayside, or at least it would for me. For me, I would need a project that I’m working on that requires these skills for me to learn, and a date in which I need to get the project done.

@RAmjad
@RAmjad 3 года назад
The best way to improve your problem-solving skills is mostly by doing problems. There are a few tips to bare in mind like not giving up a looking at the solution too soon or coming back to a problem after you're stuck but generally, the more problems you do the better you get. As for books / sites, I have a list here which I compiled some time ago: github.com/RehmanAmjad/problem-solving-bookmarks But I'm planning on making a few more videos with friends who did International Olympiads and I'm sure they'll have some recommendations too

just paid $25 for one month and started up. within a few chapters it became obvious that their lessons are a joke. The lesson scripts are BEYOND SLOVENLY in their development of concepts, they skip so much of the necessary logical premises that it's like reading a book in which every other page has been torn out. The authors of some of their chapters don't seem to know that this is not supposed to be you talking to yourself, you're supposed to be moving logically through a lesson in a way that will be comprehensible to a student.

Did you have to sit the step paper to get in for physics at Cambridge?
@RAmjad
@RAmjad 3 года назад
Nope, you only have to sit STEP if you're applying for Maths at Cambridge. The usual offer is 11 in Step 2 and 3. If you apply for Maths with Physics then you have to also sit STEP but if you "apply" to Physics (by applying to Natural Sciences and picking Physics as an option) then you only have to sit the NSAA. You usually sit STEP in Year 13 alongside your real A-level exams in May / June. But for the NSAA, you usually sit it in October in Year 13 after you send off your UCAS application. Hope that helps!

Well, I have tried it on my special need students without explaining them. They were only able to succeed on some Highschool projects. This means their slogan “everyone can succeed in STEM” isn’t true. What is true though that an average person (relative to the whole USA, not just the students) can master all algorithmic aspects of maths on every level if he is dedicated. Coming up with original proofs is another thing though. But the repetitive aspects of maths can truly be mastered by every non-disabled student with a lot of diligence

Although I consistently got 8/9s in Chemistry, I didn't really enjoy it and knew I struggled to understand [the big picture and] concepts like electrolysis so I'm not choosing it at Alevel. I'm probably doing maths, further maths, physics and geography/business. Since i've already chosen 3 facilitating subjects, I want to make the 4th more enjoyable. And if you're applying to Oxbridge, I believe the 4th Alevel is just to prove you can handle the uni workload since maths, further maths and physics have so much synergy! Btw, Computer Science is regarded well by top universities and is probably better for electrical engineering. Just because its not facilitating doesn't mean it's not a good option. Hmm interesting, I don't see that text anywhere on any of the practice pages when I go there. I wonder if it is only in specific regions?

@@RAmjad it could be like that. But if you notice that community features are already gone meaning that you can't chat anymore or submit solutions in problems in practice sheets

Yup, that's a huge bummer. There are some other great community websites like the Art of Problem Solving Forums - it's sad to see how Brilliant.org are slowly dialing back on that aspect of the website :(

Hi I am trying to go on the website but it won't let me on unless I agree to a 7 day trial. How do I not join and access the free problems you are talking about? Or are you saying I can only access the free problems during the 7 day trial? New subscriber here. Thanks in advance.

All the "Free" questions he was talking about in the video have been removed. Brilliant said that not a lot of people used the community section so they removed it.
